    Wow, this is great and really helpful I spent the last 8 years working at Amazon as a BA transitioned to DE but was forced out through their Pivot process, this was straight forward and pretty clear. Not going to lie the last few months I was doing all of this trying to get back into the industry. Lost soul 😭 was really trying to figure out why no one will even give me a chance. Thank you.

    So knowing that the DA role is the only entry level data role. Is ur advice for people out of college who want to be data engineers to get the PowerBI and Tableau cert, then get experience as a DA and then transition to DE? Also in you opinion do internships count as worthwhile experience for a field in data. Like I’ll be doing a DE internship, does it mean nothing or does it have some merit?

    • @thedatajanitor9537

    I've got till 2026 May till I graduate, I'm prepping for AWS Machine Learning Engineer Associate this December with plans to give AWS Data Engineer Associate and Solutions Architect Associate. We are told certifications isn't enough and you have to get experience in school (not that the emphasis is on cloud), so I'm doing some projects too. My question is for 1:04, is it really worthless in my scenario to get these certifications?

    • @thedatajanitor9537
      @thedatajanitor9537  2 месяца назад +3

      You need to understand the roles. For a MLE role? Yeah, nothing you can do is going to help you get a job. Simply don't going to happen. The only entry level data role is the data analyst.

    • @trogdor8942

      If you have these certifications recruiters will assume that you have real experience in solving complex business problems and that experience is not learned by taking courses. You can pass any certification by taking courses, but then comes the interview and there the recruiters will see that you only learned how to pass a certification and follow a project tutorial at best, but you can't demonstrate business knowledge. That's what entry level certifications are for, those only assess your technical competencies and employers don't expect you to have real-world experience but that you are competent to follow instructions. The only entry-level AWS cert is the Certified Cloud Practitioner

    So, there are certificate programs where one can actually learn SQL, Power BI, and Tableau. I assume those would be worthwhile based on what you mentioned in your “mini rant”? 😀

    • @siddheshmirjankar910
      @siddheshmirjankar910 2 месяца назад +10

      I don't think Mike is against Certificates of Completion. You can definitely use them to learn new skills, but putting that on your resume isn't gonna give you any plus points compared to your competition. On Udemy, you can just tick every module of the course and get a certificate 5 minutes after enrolling. It means nothing. There's no proof that you actually are knowlegable in the field. The reason, ACTUAL certifications from the Big 3 are actually valuable is because you need to go to a center and give an exam in a proctored setting. Chances of cheating are slim and if you pass, it's because you've actually learned something. Hence you can put that on your resume. Otherwise you're just wasting space

    • @r.dalegoodman1048
      @r.dalegoodman1048 2 месяца назад

      I agree with your response. However, we all know that Udemy is worthless in that regard. I was mainly referring to some of the better certificate programs that had actual labs and tests that you had to complete/pass to earn the certificate. If a person can show their competence from that alone, why overlook them for interviews? I have seen a lot of paper certified people in my career that don’t know a darn thing. So, certifications may get you an interview, but they aren’t the Holy Grail.

    • @sng8240
      @sng8240 2 месяца назад

      @@r.dalegoodman1048 Employers don't know or care whether the courses have labs. They know the names of the industry certifications and that's all that matters. Automated resume filters are also set up to detect those who have certifications

    I’m pursuing a Bachelor's in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at a Tier-3 college and am currently in my 2nd year. I aim to become a software engineer. I’ve self-learned a lot, made open source contributions to projects like scikit-learn and Matplotlib, and have a good grasp of Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA). Most of my peers tell me to focus on DSA, but I’m unsure if that’s enough. I’m also uncertain about the best steps to secure a software engineering role.
    As a student, I want to be prepared and understand the reality of getting an SE job. Campus placements are not great at our college, so should I apply for jobs off-campus? What should I do and learn to land a decent software engineering job?

    Hi Mike, what is your most recommended path to Data Engineering or MLE? The Data Analyst path is a little straightforward as in, you need to learn SQL, PowerBi and Tableau, and get the reputed certifications in these tools. But what about data engineering or MLE? I've been a data analyst for 3 years and a SQL developer for 2 years before that. Got laid off and got a part time MLE role at a startup. I wanna transition into DE or MLE for a fulltime role at a bigger company. There are so many varieties of things I see in JDs that I can't find a clear path. Can you shed some light on this?

    Love your Videos. I am currently doing my bachelor thesis, and have been working for almost 2 years in the field of cybersecurity. While working there, I realized how important it is going to be, to safeguard Machine Learning Solutions in Enterprises, as they create new vulnerabilities, which is why I am trying to find the best path for this upcoming industry. What would you recommend based on your expertise in this field? Does it make sense to do my masters in AI and Cybersecurity and work more in the field of cybersecurity? Or does it make more sense to focus on working as a ML Engineer or something?
