I have a 2003 Windstar. It's a lot easier to replace the rear plugs and do anything else behind the engine if you take the wiper cowling off. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes and it's well worth the effort.
Thanks yo your video I did the full job. My Freestar 2006 4.2L had the same issues: lack of power and shaking. So After saw your videos, I decided to change spark plugs, cables from the spark plugs, coil, oil, oil filter, air intake filter and gasoline filter, the tune up. The first time I completed the job after 5 hours, started the engine and it was exactly the same! I was very upset with myself. At the following day, I reviewed all the components assembled for this job and found I had no connected well the cables, so this time I saw your diagram, made a little test before put everything on place and this time it worked! The 2nd time I did the job in 1 hour, but this a difficult vehicle to make this tune up. Congrats for your videos and thanks again!
I'm having the same problem just a small shaking no check engine. Scanner got me a missfire in the memory on cyc 3. I'm going to do spark plugs wires and coil. And reseal the top
The coil packs on these go bad all the time and will usually cause a cylinder 3 misfire. The first thing to do is to take the coil pack off and flip it over. If the plastic underneath is all cracked replace the coil pack.
@ Fallout Fan - It's a plastic rectangular box about 6" long X 3"wide X 3" high. All the 6 spark plug wires come out of it. It has 3 coils encapsulated inside that fire the 6 spark plugs. On a Windstar it's mounted on the top rear of the engine.
Had a 2002 WinStar with 89,000 MI ran like crap pulled the plugs they were all crappy like a crusty black carbon oil mix build up replaced them and it ran like a dream for about two thousand miles now I keep oil fouling number 5 and have to change that plug but every thousand miles sometimes less. Never had good luck with Ford's but I know people that have
Hi commatose click! Thank you for the comment. Someone will take that advice. But sorry to say the Windstars frame rotted so it went to a pick and pull.
Brace yourself... Lots of info You'll have a p0171 and p0174 codes for system bank 1 and 2 being "too lean". (Id bet money on that and I don't gamble) This is caused by improper material in the upper intake manifold isolator bolts. The rubber bungs are susceptible to becoming too hard. Oil will then shoot past the isolator bolts. While you're in there, change the gaskets and inspect the clam shell intake cover for cracks and replace as needed. Inspect the cruise control deactivation switch (CCDS located on the low side of the braking master cylinder.) These were prone to leaking brake fluid through the electrical connector causing short circuit of the switch and the transmission range sensor TRS just below the CCDS. I need to replace my isolator bolts as well. I'm willing to bet that you've had electrical issues with the rear electronic module. This would show itself in the rear lights and door locks. Water was able to enter the compartment just behind the rear jack mount on the passager side and mess with that module in unpredictable ways. The jack was known to put too much weight on that wire bundle below it. The rear lights are activated by switching negative to turn them on. This means that everything in the back of the van is constantly supplied via the positive battery terminal. This means that a short to ground in any rear lights can cause them to come on, or even appear dim when the van isn't on. Welcome the the world of Electrical Gremlins. Otherwise, it can be a reliable and fairly powerful ride as long as you perform those repairs I just mentioned. I paid 500 for mine three years ago. Now I have 170k on it, and may pass 200 if I keep oil in it. Mine burns a few quarts per month.
Hi, Dave! I have a '99 Windstar. I'll be doing the plugs soon. I have seen a few videos about changing spark plugs. No matter how, it looks like a pure bitch.
U are funny as hell. "A pain in the nuts" had me crackin up 😂..but it would of been easyer to come from the top. Time consuming yes but still easy. Great video tho 👏
