      He was gone just 2 days before I was going to see him at Rock on the range in Columbus, OH. I was ready to get the motorcycle and ride 6 hours for that concert. And I did it anyways.
      My husband woke me up in the middle of the night to tell me because he didn't want me to find the news by myself. I cried so much. I was listening it everyday so excited I was to see him again. I'm a vocalist and he inspired me so much.
      At least I got to see him live with Soundgarden in Brazil once.
      Great video, thank you! ❤

    Speaking as a huge Soundgarden, Audioslave and CC fan, I’m glad you focused on this song and those unusual sounds…which I’ve always thought were a bit odd but like you still think is awesome music. I imagine Chris was going through one of his dark times during recording, possibly on or recovering from abuse and this rawness showed through with some of his vocals…so it’s a brutally honest and genuine reflection of where he was then.

    All great works of art need a layer of 'disgust' or dissonance. In cooking as well. Ingrediants that on their own can be a bit rank can elevate dishes. It's a real thing :) Saw Audioslave at the Astoria in London which was one of their first gigs live. I was only was 17. what a time to be alive.

      @@TaylorJohnHardin thank you, great to hear someone else appreciates it! Really was a risky change for Chris leaning into pop compared to his previous work including solo material. Even the album cover of him smashing his guitar was symbolic I reckon! I love the title track, Part of Me, Long Gone and Enemy but it’s really full of catchy tunes. Doing a video on a few would be awesome! 😎👍🏼

      Chris is the goat of goats! I was 18 when they released bad motor finger and I’ve been following his career since. You’re not gonna find a better vocalist from this era. Soundgarden was the first band from the grunge era to release an album with sub pop in 1989.

    I thought I was the only one that heard that. Being a professional singer and Chris Cornell being one of my huge influences, I guess I analyzed his vocal tracks more than most. Anyway, I always took it to be was that it was him doing like a post nasal drip snorting clearing your throat thing before a punch and they must have just liked where it landed and how it sounded and left it in. He's not making that sound on the vocal take that they left in. It's another track

    Yes I agree this is the greatest album! Rick Rubin produced this album only of the three released and I believe is the reason for its greatness. Shadow on the sun is my favorite song of all time. Thanks for the vid!

    This particular passage is in a range where a lot of male singers would choose to sing it mostly in a head voice, whereas others might choose to 'belt' it out through their chest. You don't often hear Chris do a 'pure' head voice, but I don't think he felt going pure chest would fit the 'softer' or more subdued mood he was going for, so he split the difference with this half-belt, with the excess force of his breath resonating into the 'mask' of his face, in this case giving a more nasal sound than the technique would at a higher range with more force.

  • @grungemusicfan
    @grungemusicfan 9 месяцев назад +1

    I’ve read that much of the throat, breath, etc sounds were left in at the insistence of Rick Rubin. He had given Cornel albums by Frank Sinatra to listen to for Blue Eyes’ mastery of microphone technique. Rubin felt that these the extra sounds Cornell made while singing added an immediacy that would be lost if things were too cleaned up. Exhibit A: Spoonman and Chris’s extraordinary vamping.

  • @lorenzohazelwood
    @lorenzohazelwood 3 месяца назад +1

    Definately noticed those sounds! I reckon it could have been Rick Rubins influence to keep that in the final take

  • @willbeyer3845
    @willbeyer3845 11 месяцев назад +1

    Totally me guessing, but I think these noises are a mix of two things Chris did made his "sound". He definitely uses a lot of nasal resonance in his singing, but also seems like he almost always has this air compression thing going on in his core. Like you can hear him "load it up" in a lot of takes right before singing
    This song is sung more gently, but I think he always did that to some extent. So compressed air when he's starting/stopping notes and a good amount of that air is in the nasal region. Hence the snotty sniffle kind of vibe that noise gives off. My take! ✌️

  • @InvasionEnjoyer
    @InvasionEnjoyer 10 месяцев назад +1

    Chris had to habit of singing with his mouth slightly closed sometimes I think maybe his mouth had closed completely when he tried to make the "M" sound and trying to push the air out. Maybe went a little nasal which gives it that slight snore sound

    I don’t know what it is, but I can’t let myself listen to Audioslave. I’ve always just been such a Soundgarden/Cornell/early ‘90s alt rock devotee. I also feel like Tom Morello is a little overrated. I dunno, or I’m just a bitter asshole lol. What cannot be argued, however, is Cornell’s position as THE preeminent grunge rock singer of the ‘90s, a head above Cobain, Vedder, and Staley. He is missed.
