It's the wrong lens, Gromit!

  • In this video, I tried to take my advice from my previous video and do something a little different by switching out landscape photography for some close up nature. I also decided to dust off my old camera gear, and take my crop sensor D7000 camera for a run. The day didn't go as planned, as my mind kept wandering back to my wide angle lens and full frame camera at home. It wasn't as successful as I'd originally planned, but still a lovely day out none the less, with a bit of high energy towards the beginning. Thank you for watching.

Absolutely brilliant video Courtney. Love how you candidly share your thought processes, even if your outings don’t always go to plan. You’ve got a fantastic screen presence and great humour.

Photos don't always have to be pin sharp. Sometimes, the best pics are not pin sharp and even not entirely in focus. Get the composition right and the "slightly off" look can give your photos character that being pin sharp often lacks. Try shooting with some old, vintage lenses. You won't get the pixel peeping sharpness out of them you get with modern glass, but you'll find they have a character all of their own. Even the vignetting can add to a photo, if done correctly. Quite often, pin sharp, modern lenses can make a photo look too clinical and crunchy. It can ruin a good photo. And, as always, another great video😊 Funny as ever!!!😊

Great video Courtney, you certainly are funny in front of the camera. I’m glad you shared your findings out with the old camera and lens. I find seeing a truthful unsuccessful photography mission very refreshing to watch. It happens to all of us, but sometimes we’re too scared to show everyone on RUclips. Thanks for sharing the video, enjoyed watching 👍🙏

Thank you haha! I have found myself in the past too preoccupied with only posting the 'good days out', but not every venture out is ideal or successful. I hate coming back with wasted video so I thought I'd try and make something of it anyway. Thank you for watching!

Another great video! I just discovered this channel and I'm glad I did. Great videos with great photos AND some humor, some of which would fit perfectly in a Wallace and Gromit episode! It's nice to see that videos like these are still on RUclips.

For future reference the DG on sigma lenses means it fits full frame cameras, DC indicates it is crop sensor cameras only. :) Also on that 1st gate, if you had pulled that large lever you used to open the gate to the right, it would have pulled the bolt across to the right to make it easier to open the gate. ;)

This video made me realize I *MIGHT* be into macro photography (my go-to lense is a 55-250mm, then my nifty fifty, then a 100mm MACRO lense, and the lense I always carry because my bag can take more lenses than I have but never use is the 18-55mm kit lense... I am planning on buying a wide angle lense someday whenever I save money again)

Would be nice to go on a Workshop with you, as I'm sure many others would, going through the thought process of particular 'shots'. As you know, there are many settings that can be chosen, depending on what kind of shot you want in the end, not only from Aperature, ISO or shutter speed, but depending on the light, the ND filter choices, or polarizing lenses. Like you, I'm usually on my own when out on a Photo shoot, often thinking of taking a shot, and having someone to bounce idea's off of. Nonetheless, your old 7000 is a great camera, and as you say, 'lenses' can make or break a quality image on the choices you have with you!

These telephoto zoom lenses for DSRL’s need to be calibrated to the body if you want them sharp full extended. Trial and error with AF fine tune having the lens full open and fully extended will get you the best results.

Why do you need faster auto focus? No hurry out in the field. Use manual focus - it's easy enough and quick as you make it..

    Thats nearly my daily experience...
Im mainly going out with 2 lenses... RF 800 F11 and RF 50mm 1.8. If i am in the mood of walking thru a city nearby or whatelse, im mostly fine with 50mm. And, often the main reason im out.... wildlife with the RF 800.
rarely im using EF Zoom and Macro lenses on EF RF filter adapter.
But anyways i have always the same problem - i just dont have any wide angle lens.... 28-135mm is the biggest zoom range i have and 28mm is also my smallest focal range. Or i have just 50 and 800mm primes which make it even worse (but super compact and just 1,9kg)

btw, i had the canon version of your lens, the 75-300mm IS USM (and sold it after 10 years for the same price i paid 2nd hand once, lol)
It was super nice for anything between 75-200mm, but as your nikon lens... its just getting unusable at more than 200mm. And then there is the autofocus... CANCEROUS... it made me literally quit the photography hobby for some years before i could afford something usable (i did phone "photography" and videography on a phone-gimbal instead)

I'm confused. Isn't your old Nikon an F mount? Why wouldn't you take your trusty zoom with you wherever and whenever you spend a day out? If your bag is to small then consider a bigger bag. Like you, I have a favorite zoom and it goes with me everywhere no matter what I'm photographing. Lately I-ve been working with my prime lenses but the zoom is in my camera bag. Regardless, I enjoy watching your videos very much. I like your 10 minite
