@@AllisonShiro You're missing my point. He told them he didn't think he knew sign language well enough to do it, and they pressured him into it. Of course you prefer a professional interpreter. But he isn't the one to blame for them not getting one.
It looks to me that Manatee County Officials threw him to the wolves. He told them he did not think he could do it but they had him do it anyway. The family said signing for a disaster/evacuation is very different from what you would sign for everyday life. I can see how those words might correlate to what he was trying to say: pizza = food, monster = disaster/danger, and bear hug = shelter in place. County officials could have closed captioned the warning instead of sending out a novice who probably only signs to communicate to his family. You don't send a person who knows just enough of a language to just get them by in their day to day life to conduct peace talks with an enemy, you send in your best interpreter to do the job and, if you can't find one near you, you look everywhere for one. I am guessing that the county officials were either being lazy or did not have the technology to do closed captioning.

Why do those people be commenting about the whole thing saying "this is outrageous" or "absolutely unbelievable" acting like the man committed a war crime?
Well there's an ongoing debate in the Deaf and interpreting communities about which does more harm: having an ineffective interpreter, or no interpreter at all. To some people, the answer seems obvious, but the reality is that it truly is a tough dilemma. Sometimes, depending on the situation, one is a slightly better choice than the other or is slightly more workable, but most of the time it's a judgement call where, either way, the Deaf people/person is receives a disservice And for a community that is routinely dismissed, disenfranchised, underestimated, and pushed aside... It's yet another incident of being left out and looked down on as less important
You can tell by his body language he is really stressed out and doesn't want to do it. The other woman who got caught doing the same thing, however, looked like she was loving every minute of it.
Even as a bilingual who would consider themselves sufficiently fluent in both languages, If an official suddenly asked me to translate an urgent message I am not sure it would go well either. So I can see how he was definitely not equipped to translate at full speed with limited ASL vocabulary. The fact that a life threatening disaster announcement by a county official was not planned to have accessibility to the disabled is the real failure. You wouldn’t have had a “gibberish interpretations” if such requirements had been thought about ahead of time. What I find more despicable is that Inside Edition used his video in another piece, with 8 million views, as an example of “fake ASL Interpreters”. The piece focused around a women signing gibberish. The difference was that she had previous history and a string of criminal fraud charges. More ridiculously she was doing it for the Tampa Police. She came in and just asked if they needed an Interpreter and they didn’t think about it twice. Her signing was complete none sense and for the most part no words much less complete sentences correlated with the announcement. When he’s saying “Pizza” for food, or “Monster” for something scary it’s him trying to interpret to the best of his limited ASL knowledge and I imagine an announcement about a “historic storm” will include words that see limited use in regular English vocabulary. Even if he did have the vocabulary, being a good interpreter takes practice, planning and time to master. It’s an unacceptable and for the most part unintelligible interpretation but it’s the fault of the officials for it to have gotten as far as it did. In the other piece Inside Edition interviewed a Tampa PR official who took responsibility for the mistake. Why wasn’t this done in this piece and why did Insider Edition continue use him as an example in stories relating to fraudulent interpreters? If he was not contracted by them ahead of time to Interpret for the announcement, how can we not put the blame on the officials?
It is possible to do more harm than good, even when you think you're helping. That's why we need to talk about issues like this, and people need to be more aware of their own skills and limitations, and should give thought before jumping in or agreeing to stuff.
It doesn't mean that he needs to feel obligated. ESPECIALLY A WARNING WEATHER FOR MILLIONS. This is not just some cute awards night thing. It is a life and death weather warning... He should have said No, it can be SIMPLE as that.
god, i'm so late but i feel bad for him, he didn't want to do it but was pressured into it. it's so sad how some people use the deaf community to look like they care about the disabled, when all they want is to look good instead of actually trying to provide access
Poor guy! He let them know he wasn’t an expert and just had a deaf brother and knew a little sign language. Then, people put him on blast like this? At least he didn’t come running offering his services like the woman who did this after this story came out.
It isn't the interpreter that Inside Edition should be focusing on. Clueless reporting brings ineffective change. What was the goal of this negative reporting in that individual? It is the emergency planners of that county that should be under the microscope for their lack knowledge and planning on what it takes to provide effective communication access.
Darcy Tucker To show that the guy didn't offer to sign, he was put in the position to do so, and now he's being roasted alive for it. And honestly, the storm was taking odd turns left and right- do you really think that 'Manatee county' would be as prepared at the last moment as the governor of Florida? You have to pay an interpreter, and some of these areas can barely afford to fund elementary schools.
The hurricane wasn't a surprise, it didn't sneak up on them. And the concept of a live press conference during a crisis is not a new one, nor is hiring a qualified interpreter for such a conference (as required by law under the ADA). There was irresponsibility from both parties. I do not believe in any manner that this man or his family should be crucified or harassed or even kinda bothered. But I do believe he made a mistake that should be turned into a lesson for everyone, an example of what not to do. And of course the many mistakes that went into not having an interpreter then asking this guy in the first place.
what i don’t understand is why people praise so many interpreters who use facial expressions. like,, that’s a huge part of sign language. if they didn’t use facial expressions then the whole meaning of certain things would be lost in translation. it’s their job to interpret correctly and that includes using their face.
How’s it his fault if he told them he didn’t know enough and they still kept asking him to do it? He was clearly trying if he was signing some words, maybe not the correct words but words.
He was not "actually signing total gibberish." He was doing his best, finger-spelling what he didn't know, and occasionally getting signs slightly wrong so they were (willfully) misinterpreted by fluent speakers. (for instance, one captioner said he said "evacu10te," but "10" is *almost* identical to "a.") He was forced to do it at the last second and didn't feel qualified, so they made him.
I respect this guy for trying to go above and beyond when asked. Blame should be placed on the county officials for putting him in this position. And shame on Inside Edition for trying to draw some kind of illogical comparison to a professional interpreter at the end.
I mean, he made a mistake and should have said no. I feel bad for how embarrassing this must be, but I don't think he necessarily deserves respect. People need to be more aware of their own skills and limitations, and understand that sometimes you can do more harm than good, even when you think you're helping.
Fair point! I am more troubled with how this story was framed. It's the individual humiliation that I find most distasteful. Ultimately yes, he should not have agreed to do something that he was not capable of. Do you get the sense that he was asked to do this, or he more outwardly volunteered his efforts - this wasn't completely clear to me?
I feel bad for the deaf people watching... They must have been really worried about the pizza monsters and whether they should bear hug them or not. :/
Saving/me They aren't blind, they can still see whats happening on the T.V. screen, and the deaf people have to have loved ones that would tell them before hand about the hurricane

he is not an interpreter...he is a signer...an interpreter would never wear yellow.
They put him there knowing he wasn’t 100%.
Poor guy, he didnt mean to do anything wrong
It is possible to do more harm than good, even when you think you're helping. That's why we need to talk about issues like this, and people need to be more aware of their own skills and limitations, and should give thought before jumping in or agreeing to stuff.
Moxie McRawr he didn't want to do it but they insisted he did because no one else was available
It doesn't mean that he needs to feel obligated. ESPECIALLY A WARNING WEATHER FOR MILLIONS. This is not just some cute awards night thing. It is a life and death weather warning... He should have said No, it can be SIMPLE as that.
poor guy looked so nervous, he didn't even want to do it.
Ironic how Inside Edition lacks closed captioning on this video.
god, i'm so late but i feel bad for him, he didn't want to do it but was pressured into it. it's so sad how some people use the deaf community to look like they care about the disabled, when all they want is to look good instead of actually trying to provide access
*def person watches tv*
*def guy* "pizza"
*def person watching* "same."
he was just asked to step in =(
You can know some or be fluent in a language but being a interpreter is something else, I can’t blame this guy
The worst part is this guys family is hearing impaired and he never bothered to learn sign language lol
Sure, he shouldn’t have been on stage, but give him a break! He told them he didn’t feel qualified!
At least he signed some words unlike that other lady just making hand and finger motions 😂😂
at least he tried his best inside edition, no need to snitch to america my god
He tried 😂😂😂 if it was me I would’ve just been sticking up middle fingers and doing gang signs
It must be hard to find people who know sign language, I always wanted to learn it because I love how expressive it is
How’s it his fault if he told them he didn’t know enough and they still kept asking him to do it? He was clearly trying if he was signing some words, maybe not the correct words but words.
When you put on your resume that you know a second language 😂
I think it's so dumb how everyone's laughing on jimmys show at his sign language.. that's literally people's language
Lauren O'Donnell felt the same way. They sign like this it's not to be funny. 🙃
Yeah I don’t get why people were laughing hysterically.
Deaf people wondering why she’s talking about flushing her dog down the toilet:
Atleast he came
He signed the best that he could and, from him, I learned how to sign "Stop monster pizza". The latter has proven invaluable to me over the years!
I feel bad for this guy. My heart hurts. He seems so embarrassed. I feel so bad. He tried his best to 🙁
This is why accurate closed captioning is so important.
Another one 😂😂😂
this guy :🙅♂️🙆♂️🙋♂️💁♂️🙅♂️🙇♂️🙆♂️=🍕👹🐻
Deaf people : 👀⁉️
He was told to do it, not seeking to scam
I'm hearing impaired rip and why would no one be available at the time of hurricane Irma to relay an urgent message hahah
You get your news from TV? yea, you'd be screwed in pretty much any situation.
0:05 gibberish
0:15 words 🍕🧌🐻🫂🤗

He was not "actually signing total gibberish." He was doing his best, finger-spelling what he didn't know, and occasionally getting signs slightly wrong so they were (willfully) misinterpreted by fluent speakers. (for instance, one captioner said he said "evacu10te," but "10" is *almost* identical to "a.") He was forced to do it at the last second and didn't feel qualified, so they made him.
If you don’t know a word, you finger spell. It’s not complicated.
This seems like something roger would do on American dad, I started laughing my ass off when I saw this
I respect this guy for trying to go above and beyond when asked.
That first guy looks more authentic than the one being praised. Is it just me?
This is scary. Deaf people wouldn't get the memo to leave town😓
Saving/me They aren't blind, they can still see whats happening on the T.V. screen, and the deaf people have to have loved ones that would tell them before hand about the hurricane
Hockey Nation Which one
Brandon Soto yeah, they can just call and warn... oh...
I have a feeling they just thought he could do it because he knew sign language. He probably didn’t have training as an interpreter like the other guy
0:18 *Google translate in a nutshell*
*family says: he was forced to do this with minimal knowledge. Please don’t criticize him
*Inside Edition narrator: **Still criticizes him at end of video by comparing him to a sign language STAR who is way better and says maybe he can get some lessons.
Dont ever do an anti-bullying piece Inside Edition because you guys just bullied someone here
Imagine a real deaf person watching this is like:huh ,love this news
He gets a pass
He's doing his best! (Slams hand in tables)
"Maybe he can give THIS guy some lessons" said in the most condescending tone possible.
I’d like to see proof that any deaf viewers actually rely on these interpreters.
Ask some Deaf people
@@RavenBells - Yeah, I’ll get right on it.
Props to the dude for trying. I would've stood there doing Naruto handsigns, had it been me.
he is not an interpreter...he is a signer...an interpreter would never wear yellow. He was coerced into doing something that was beyond his skills and according to his family he told them he was not comfortable with interpreting. Just because you can sign for yourself does not mean you have the skill to interpret for others
Mere fact that his brother in law was impaired shows that he MIGHT be on the side of truth
The deaf community should speak up and voice their collective anger.
Lol
i actually feel bad for him but not for the other girl that faked SL
Ahh. After hearing the background to this we should give the guy a break.
Well its pretty hard remembering hand gestures hell i forget how to do gang signs you cant blame the guy
The man did his best. That is all anyone can ask for. He should be rewarded in food and loose women.
He did not. No one understood him. I bet if he were saying gibberish in english you would be outraged. Don't excuse this.
