This Proton (well, the pre-facelift model specifically) launched in Britain back in 1989. Dated though it was, it offered reliable and practical motoring for a small price. Proton's slogan was 'Japanese Technology, Malaysian Style'. By 1991, some 30,000 Protons were sold in the U.K. It was unprecedented; no other car had sold as rapidly as the original Proton did in Britain. It set the record for 'Fastest Selling Make of New Car Ever to Enter the United Kingdom'. These days, you'll be hard pressed to find a Proton of this antiquity in Britain. Like most 80s and 90s econoboxes, they've all but disappeared from the roads... but perhaps not from our memories.

@SkrawnyJonny : Well, I like old (80s and 90s) cars. Sorry if that bothers you. And unfortunately, the Corvette isn't on sale where I live. For decades, we never got the Mustang either... but we finally got the newest one this year (in right-hand drive). I quite like it. Ford did a good job. Chevrolet should make a RHD Camaro too.

Around the end of 2014, my hometown in Malaysia was struck by a massive flood that sunk almost the whole state. One of my relatives had this car and his car was 100% submerged in the water. After the flood subside, a month later, he worked on it to revive it. He succeed.
The older Protons are the easiest car to work on. Barely any reliable issues.

To see a car symbolized as tank in its prime time still being used in modern day, it makes me realize how long lasting it is. The car design has several downsides, it overheats quite easily due to lack of air flow to its radiator. Also its engine lacking a lot of pickup, making the drive going up the hill a bad experience. The car also need a little modification to its suspension with an additional hydraulic to make it a little bit higher. It also need a thicker, wider tire as well. The best thing about the car is, its chassis is damn hard you can physically hit a tree without having too much damage on it.

Tuning it will make it a great rally car, like the Wolseley land crabs with their great rigidity

It's a Proton Saga. The first car the Malaysian company ever came out. Basically, it's a reworked Lancer Fiore. The engine is either 1.3 or 1.5 if I'm not mistaken.

When I was with my ex, we had one of these as a dump run/shopping trolley/wheelbarrow/incontinent-cat-to-the-vet car. They were over engineered: if that many bits can fall off and the car still work, it didn't need them in the first place. It came with an ashtray, the perfect place to keep screws that fell out of the dashboard.
As for confusion about the model name, we just used to fill in Shmoton. The Proton Shmoton. Perfect.

the cars real name is Proton Iswara. its made in Malaysia. the new model is called Proton Saga. they are not bad actually. maintainance is good and the mitsubishi engine is bulletproof.

im still using this car,i got it from my dad.. Pronton Iswara Sedan 2001 with power steering and power windows.. it still runs on the original 1.3 Mitsubishi engine,only once overhauled.. he's been using it for almost 15 years until he gave it to me.. the engine is still smooth,power windows still works,power steering also works well.. for a full tank,i can drive almost 500miles.. come here to Malaysia dude,and you can still see this legendary car and its old Proton Saga predecessor roaming the streets.. im proud to be one of the owner to this so called TANK.. hahahaha!!

Not always true. My 1995 Subaru is easier to work on than my 1984 Dodge truck was. Less vacuum lines than the truck, and the computer is able to tell you where to start looking if something's wrong with the engine, but not intrusive enough to be confusing.
Can confirm. Early but not too early EFI systems are the easiest to work on. You want new enough that it doesn't do stupid stuff, but not so new that the beancounters took a chainsaw to the BOM.

My little Rover convertible cost £50 5 years ago. It's cost me less than £100 in repairs since then and is still going strong. I even use it to tow my trailers. One is a small open box trailer with a volume of 1 cubic metre and the other takes either 3 motorbikes or one ginormous trike.

did some challenges with it, racing and off roading, 1 year later it still works now on 577,000 miles

£200 for that? that's close to $400Aud, you can get a straight, rust free & mechanically sound mid-late 90s V6 Holden Commodore(Vauxhall Carlton/Omega with a 3.8 litre Buick v6) here for less than that here.
True, but I expected the car to be a lot cheaper for the type of car & condition, usually cars in all ends of the market in the UK are much cheaper than their equivalent in Aus, I thought he could have gotten something much better for 200 pounds.

i also own this car, and use it for work. i did travel alot every day. Don't ever bother about maintenance cost. really cheap
