Why not just use cat5/6 cable and RJ-45 to D9 adaptors. Saves so much time and makes it more flexible for the future?

Cable Flexibility, Cable size, Conduit size, Cost. Occasionally, when the spare cable is a Cat6 cable, we would repurpose it for our needs.

Point of information: there is no DB9 connector, there is DA15, DB25, DC37, DD50, DE9. Lots of people made the mistake of keeping the 'B' when serial connectors transitioned from DB25 to DE9 way back in the 70's and 80's, but still this error persists!

can i use nes gamepad in pc with rs232 db9 male to usb converter

The short answer is "no," but it is theoretically possible on an engineering level.
To achieve this, one method could be to:
      - Understand the signals from each button on the NES gamepad.
      - Create a custom interface (possibly using a DB9 connector, but rewired) to connect the gamepad to a USB board.
      - The USB board would need memory and a converter/program to translate the gamepad signals into a format that the PC and game can understand.
      - The other end of the USB cable would then connect to the PC.
This process would require a good understanding of Serial and USB communication protocols, as well as the ability to design and build custom hardware and software.
      It was a good question!
