As a person who has studied and loved (and tried to play) the pop piano styles of the 1910s/1920s for over 20 years, this performance is nothing short of miraculous. Mr. Hamelin is of course one of the greatest living pianists in any genre, and although he is 'known' as a classical pianist, he plays this 1920s pop piano transformation of Chopin with great wit and sparkle without losing any of the dignity of Mr. Chopin's music and paying reverence to both the original music and Clement Doucet's transformation of them. And... he performs pianistic feats that for me are stupendous (although maybe not as technically impossible as some of the OTHER pieces he plays). Really, really, really well done. Since he is a Canadian, I only wish that, now that he has done his recent William Bolcom ragtime album, he would stay in a ragtime vein for a second and also record a tribute to Willie Eckstein with transcriptions of all his brilliant recordings. (Although- of course those are highly virtuosic so in between his intensive touring schedule it may take a while to transcribe and learn them all). Along with Mimi Blais and maybe Peter Mintun (and maybe Alex Hassan), Hamelin is probably one of the few living pianists who could actually pull this off, and Mr. Eckstein is long overdue a proper tribute IMO.
hamelin is a fantastic pianist and i really enjoy this performance...however....i feel it misses the charm and "swing" that Doucet puts in this piece in his own recording. but again....love Hamelin!
One of the most entertaining pieces of music - played by a brilliant artist with phenomenal technical skills.

I wish certain other stride players would watch this and see what it means to play at the right tempo and incorporate some dynamics.
