I spent 40 years in aircraft maintenance and repair. While we didnt have flow charts themselves, the good mechanics worked thru the issues just as if they had one. And they also did thorough checks just as your maintenance manager way back taught you to do Doc. It is a simple way to do complex jobs. All mechanics should be taught to think and operate as if they were working off a flow chart if they have them or not. For Harley to publish the flow charts is a good thing for both the mechanic and consumer. Thank you!
Ron Hunter , as an licensed aircraft maintenance engineer myself I totally second what you’ve said. This is why I find Doc’s videos so good to watch: he understands what he’s talking about. And I don’t even own a H-D! 😀 🇦🇺
Very well explained Doc. Problem is that there aren’t service managers like that anymore. Technicians aren’t really too good these days either. It’s hard to find a Harley shop with knowledgeable guys in the shop. Plus lousy customer service when they don’t do a job right. It’s very frustrating.
My kick start would start my shovel head when the electric start would not intermittently and when the bike got wet. Replaced the dead battery every 3 months. Finally it died out doing 60mph after I just put cams in, felt like I broke a valve. Took off the top end , every thing ok, took it to the shop and it turned out to be a bad stator. Doh! Never ran stronger after I had the mechanic who knew flow chart electrical. So great vid mr. Doc!
I can relate so much to watch Doc is explaining because I am an industrial electrical technician. I have learned to use root cause analysis, which is the fancy name for what Doc was referring to on his learnings from his service manager. It ia cause and effect relationship. Thanks to Doc to explain it in layman terms so people who are not in the trades can understand. We trade people live and die by the way we troubleshoot a problem so we can service our customer in a timely manner and our reputation is impeccable.
Hey, doc! I watch your videos attentively from the other side of this planet - Germany! They are so informative and make me think. Unfortunately in Germany you often can't "work together" with a dealer, because they think they know everything better. And for that you pay quite a lot of money to have the same problem in a year or earlier. I have made the experience that independent garages make more effort to satisfy the customer for less money. For example - a simple tire change for a 2018 Softail Slim will cost you about 500€ at a Harley but only about 350€ at an independent garage. Now you can imagine what you have to pay if you have a gearbox or engine problem. Keep it up and stay healthy !
Many independent garages also lets you in to see the job being done and chat with the mechanic up close and personal. No HD dealership around here will let you into the workshop area. I just had the 16k km service on my FXLR and GT Mustang, both at the respective HD and Ford dealerships. Both services were pretty much at par work wise (typical similar service checklists - and both said the vehicles would be ready within 3 hours), however, the Harley service cost me $50 more than the Mustang without any real apparent differences in things done (eg. just the typical oil/oil filter changes, no brake fluid changes) . As Hamlet said, something is wrong in the State of Denmark [and in Australia]..
Excellent advise. Car, truck or motorcycle. Returning to the same dealer can also occasionally provide a discount on the second repair. Even if it’s from not duplicating labor.
Doc your are an excellent mechanic and had an awesome teacher. That is the way things are done!! But most of the dealers don’t work like that, they don’t like to service old bikes and don’t listen to the rider, they just like the cash register sound and don’t really care about your ride, just do the easy and fast fix. I took my 2010 to the dealer and said change the handlebar and do everything you need to leave it like new. My bike returned scratched, with error codes and I had to end the job home (replace master cylinder caps). By the way It was Alligator Alley in Florida.
This makes a lot of good sense. Thanks What you explained is akin to doing a scar report on aircraft. You don't just fix the broken part, you have to go backwards from the fail point to find what caused the failure in the first place.
Good Info thanks Doc! Every Harley owner needs watch your videos, these could haves helped and saved me a lot of headache and better understanding of HD Techs process. It’s easy to get upset and not return.
I’ve been having some problems with my primary drive. The first time the dealership replaced the main bearing in the transmission. But no one told me why. The bike only had 10k on it. Some years later the splines in the clutch basket went out and then I was told the compensator sprockets was bad. Well all the research I’ve done led me to automatic chain tensioner. I’ve tried them all and nothing is satisfactory, so I’m going back to the stock tensioner. Hopefully the old problem won’t serface.
I bought a new 09 street bob. Some times the headlight would be off. ( I noticed it not shining on the back of a car ). I had to flick the switch to put it on ..It was intermittent. The dealer would not even look at it. They said Harley would not accept it. It still plays up now. It’s only got 27,000 Km on it. But. That’s one problem with some dealers
Doc I have a question not related to this video. Crankshaft positioning sensor can that bolt be removed put back in or does it have to be realigned. With timing
The newer device manuals do not include electrical and wiring diagrams. The motor company started printing a separate manual for the electrical items and issues.
Again the manual is referred to as a electrical diagnostic manual, prepared by the motor company. I do not doubt that your manual has a diagrams and flow charts. I have been with the motor company for 27 years as a master level technician.
Been an automobile tech/shadetree motorcycle tech for over 39 years . It's a catch 22 type of job . Some customers dont understand . Engineers , not sure if they're team players or not . Do you use anything like Alldata or Identifix . It can really help with real world diagnosis.
Good intel on the process. Either the tech didn't follow the book, or the the correct page was missing. Curious if there's step that requires actually ride testing a motorcycle, to control the quality of service, prior to billing the customer? Asking for a friend.
Wish you were in my area. I would never let another person to her. My dealership is so busy chasing the dollar they are beginning to do poor work. She is a 2011 flhxxx, I have been having problems with her going into neutral when she is hot and they can’t get it fixed. Mind you she has been in the shop over 10 times for this problem.
Sometimes the best root cause analysis happens away from the garage - doing other things while letting your brain chew on the problem. in the shower, sleeping, raking leaves..."Ah Ha! new theory to try..."
I have a question. Hope this is ok to ask here. I have a 1999 electra glide with a trike kit. Every time a go into 2 ND gear the fuse for my head light blows. Where do I start to fix this problem? Not that I'm dumb but I'm on my 2 ND year of riding and I'm not fimilar with all this. So please bare with me. :)
Lisa thank you for your question. Of course you and I are behind the 8 ball with an add on aftermarket trike kit. Your headlight wiring goes to the left control on the handlebars. Any chance the Trike reverse control is nearby? Or something is pinching the Blue wire? Also look near the transmission where the shifter moves. When you lift the shift arm the lever moves at the transmission. Is there wires hanging down being moved? That headlight fuse powers many lights and joins an interconnect harness under your seat. Too many possibilities of wires compromised with age and modifications to your bike to fix here on the Net. We wish you lived closer…..Doc
My beef with flowcharts is that the labor rate manual for diagnostic and electrical repairs no longer have descriptions.. just a code, which coincides with a code at the end of every flowchart.. so my knowledge and experience of a system, as a technician, is now irrelevant. I may have fixed the exact same problem on ten bikes in a row, but unless I follow the flowchart and find that code, I don't get paid. And all those problems the engineers didn't come up with a flowchart? It's a struggle to get paid some days. Another employee had to be hired for a seven tech crew just to navigate warranty claims and find ways to get us paid for what we earned. That's more cost that has to be passed on to the customers in the way of higher labor rates in order for the shop to continue servicing customers.
Just like there is "no replacement for displacement", there is also "no replacement for experience". I'm sure Doc can tell pretty much what the issue (and most likely solution) to any problem brought to him is now.
It would sure be nice if dealers could grasp that some of their customers ride 15k a year with the bike as primary mode of transportation. All to often all riders get treated like our bikes are garage queens that see 500 miles a year. Having to schedule a warranty repair 3 months out is BS.
Sorry doc, love your videos, but it's cheaper to go to a motorcycle mechanic school than paying the dealers bills, I understand that the industry have to survive and the technician has to make a living, but HD dealer have prices not just out of this world.... Out of this universe I would say.
