@@zacmagers sure bro ! Ill buy the green one tomorrow … it’s difficult, almost impossible to get these shoes in my country ( Senegal west Africa !) but I see one guy in the marketplace of Facebook with all the Salomon boots ! He don’t even know the real price and buzz of these kinda shoes !!! I get them for nothing 😅🫶🏽>>> subscribed to your channel 👊🏽
You’ve got the v2 model (you can tell by the updated branding/logos) of the ultra 4’s, so I’m assuming Salomon has addressed the issues with the og U4 model
When I was researching this shoe last August I had noticed reviews of color ways that weren’t available from salomon anymore, and the branding was different, I was wondering what that was about… I just poured over many images of the different branded men’s and women’s. I can definitely tell on the women’s shoe ( with the non S square logo ) that the toe box double stitching is slightly spaced wider and the leather is captured by the toe over molding. On the men’s however, I really can’t tell the difference at least from stock photos. Right now both branded versions are portrayed on the men’s checkout page on Salomon site. Hopefully they aren’t selling a v1 and v2 model with updates at the same price….and it’s just stock photos not updated. Thanks for pointing this out. The last company I worked at we pulled this kinda stuff all the time ( very transparent with customers about it ) and it’s a huge impact on customer trust and warranty nightmares. It’s good to address design flaws but it would be good to have that advertised and be honest with customers.
@@zacmagers yes for sure that's some good points! I've noticed all the marketing I can see on distibuters websites are still displaying the v1 photos (I do not think the slight visual change was enough to justify a reshoot). I noticed the 'v2' tag in the description of a 3rd party seller, so I looked into it more. It seems Salomon are not very transparent about it on their own website, as you cannot find the 'v2' label. I'm assuming most of the changes are under the hood, with improved stitching and durability in the v2's. We can only hope anyway :) If you show has an 'S' on the tongue, and not the stenciled 'S', as well as the Salomon text on the heel (without the S logo underneath) you have a V2 version!
Howdy there:) These shoelaces on the men’s…rock. They seem to be thicker, more give and they tie down / cinch down better and stay. For sooooome reason, at least in 2023, the women’s laces have less give, less cinch action. Double knot!! That’s worked time and time again:) Thanks for checkIng out the video! Cheers
Thanks for checking it out I’m glad you enjoyed it! I must have narrow feet because I never seem to have the typical issues people have with more narrow boots. With Salomon, I’d say one of the top three complaints is these shoes run narrow. So not ideal for wide feet. I hope I’m remembering correctly, but I could have sworn I saw the other night they now sell a wide version of this boot. I’d definitely check that out and see if there is somewhere local you can try it on. In general I still love the comfort of this boot many miles on, so on that I’d still recommend. However I’ve noticed this outsole may end up having a short life. And it’s also not as grippy as I’d prefer in wet rock conditions. Besides that the boot has been amazingly comfortable. Cheers
Howdy Kevin! So I immediately switched out for Sole Performance Medium. These aren’t anything extreme or custom, the cost is manageable and I’ve found them to be so damn comfortable. The reason I initially even moved towards replacing the inserts is I found the boots to be about a half size too big. Someone more familiar with the outdoors world that was with me the moment I was trying them on suggested this was probably better, as it would allow for some more significant insoles and you’d need the extra space for that. Turns out to be totally correct after I placed the Sole Performance in the boot it filled up the space perfectly ( plus medium weight socks ) Thanks for checking out the vid!
Well they definitely helped fill the shoes up 100% and they fit perfectly now. I was almost about to return the boots…glad so didn’t ! Hope they work out Cheers
Shoes are a personal thing , I got a pair of Salomon trail runners (Crossover) and I love them !! So because of that experience and wanting to try a lighter pair of boots ,.....I got a pair of X-ultra 4's a while ago , and while they are not bad ...I just don't like flimsy boots I guess . In my experience these are fine for well maintained trails in okay dry weather , with the occasional few drops of rain. Would I take them in more challenging situations ?? GOD NO !! ... These are not 100 % waterproof in extreme situations , offer zero protection other than the tiny toecap , have little grip on wet surfaces, and are horrible on jagged rocky terrain .... plus they are a pain in the ass when it comes to maintenance compared to a leather boot . On the other hand ; Salomon trail runners perform great for what they are designed to do (exceptional grip and traction !!) But...... for boots I would stay away from Salomon tbh (but hey, like I said it's a personal opinion) If you recognize yourself in this and like me you don't mind the bit of extra weight : .........I highly recommend you get yourself a pair of...... "Meindl Island/ Island Pro / Perfect / Super Perfect " .........or a pair of......... "Lowa Renegade/ Renegade Task Force " . These are more expensive though , but ....they will outlast a pair of Salomon for a loooooong time . both Lowa and Meindl also offer (free) resoling on their boots if the need arises .
Wow thank you far taking time to write such a long comment and thanks for your thoughts! Shoes are a personal thing for sure… I just checked out the renegades , those have a very tactical look too I really dig it! I would like to get my feet more and more used to runners at some point, that’s one reason I chose a sorta pretend boot ha. So far after nearly a year of use they are holding up OK, but it kill’s me they don’t have a Vibram sole…that would make these like %20 better. For now these are just cheap ( er ) options that work pretty well and I wouldn’t mind get a couple times until I’m ready for runners. 100 not for wet conditions and the goretex seems wasted on these. Without goretex, and a vibram sole, I’d be fine with these for a long time.
@@zacmagers I get it haha I too was on that quest haha. Just get yourself a pair of SpeedCross or Crossover already ;) Way more comfy than those x-ultra 4. You need to walk differently in those runners anyways , better to get used to it asap. And make sure to bring some gaiters on longer trips and don't go too heavy on the pack...it's not pleasant without the support of a high boot. just go for it !!!
Howdy! This color way ( Deep Linchen Green ) was ordered on the Salomon website direct. They still have the V1 in the photos on the website, but mine arrived as V2 thankfully. Link : www.salomon.com/en-us/shop/product/x-ultra-4-mid-gore-tex-21.html#color=73402 Cheers!
Ahh I see, thank you! Btw, do you have any idea where we can view the latest v2 color ways (since as you mentioned, it is still the v1 photos on the website) ?
@Beateratorrr You got it:) The color ways on the Salomon site are the current V2 releases, just keep an eye on that Salomon logo on the heel area of the boot. In the website it’s a squarish S logo, you want to see the brand Salomon spelled out like mine are in the video. They most likely just have older photos on the website, just make sure what you receive ( or if you find at a store in person like REI ) that you look for that updated V2 logo. V2 has some quality control revisions
It is wild that they intentionally designed such large gender differences in the shoes for no reason. The women's shoes have fantastic colorways, the grey/peach color shown in the video is gorgeous in person. The cuff on the women's version is just a more attractive shape as well, I feel like the men's cuff dips down right around the indent of the achilles and would let dirt in. I can totally see the toe crease becoming a problem, it exists in the sister boot the Quest 4 as well. The Quest 4s hurt like hell for the first 2 hikes because of that toe crease combined with the thicker material on the Quest, but it did loosen up and go away on that model.
It is a shame the gender differences for sure! And it’s very odd specific decisions in my opinion. The tongue / cuff is a more contouring and attractive shape on the women’s version as you mention, but the inner fabric of the men’s seems more breathable and robust. Very odd. I would imagine with the Quest that some proper leather care treatments would help keep things soft and healthy in the toe box too. The Quest is certainly an intense looking boot! Thanks for checking out the vid :)
Great review and detail here...thanks!
Howdy Chris!
Thanks for checking out the vid, hope it was helpful:)
I’m a biker, and I love put hiker boots ! I got this one 👌🏽
