    Good review. But do you have any update after extended use? I need something that will last 6-months to a year. 700-1000 mile warranty doesn't seem like much compared to Xero which has a similar pair with warranty of 5000 miles (and costs less).

      Much appreciated thank you for checking out the vid! I probably only have about 200 miles on them so far so unfortunately I can’t speak to the long term mileage you are aiming for, but I can say with roughly 200 miles, the edges of the tread are basically unchanged and I’ve had these on some pretty sharp rock trails. Bedrock has a pretty cool re-soul and repair program as well! Cheers

    COFFEE Why bother with the StS? Yes, get rid of the lid of the Ti pot. BUT... replace it with foil. Simply put the pot upside down on an aluminum plate, then trace a circle with a sharpie. Remove the pot a cut a bit wider. Once done, place it, centered on the pot and fold the edges all around. Next, get a small piece of metallic duct tape and stick it as an handle on top of that DIY ultra light lid. Tada! And just use the GSI filter directly on your Titanium pot. You'll save money and tons of weight. BOTTLES vs FILTRATION Again, keep it simple. There are many types of printing on the Smart Water bottles. One of them, is printed in.... black. That'd be the dirty water bottle. And the ones with the color printing will be for the clean water. No need to buy a black cap, and the black printed bottle is 10 thousand times more obvious (therefore safer), than having two same bottles with one using a tiny black cap.

      @@zacmagers Zac, I'm going to be 100% honest with you here. If you started this channel with the hope to get freebies, then you're doomed and will become another unreliable RUclipsr like Justin Outdoors, Miranda the noob, Becker and so many others. Just so you know, the latest survey in the outdoor industry demonstrates that a vast majority of people don't trust the so-called influencer. Yup, you read that right! You're new in the outdoors (on RUclips), but yet, your video was excellent. You, by no means, tried to pretend to be an expert and/or a scientist. You also brought up the important facts and made some no non-sense tests that say a lot. Your comment/observations were spot on and the general feeling of the video was excellent. In fact, this video could be a reference for anyone wanting to do the same thing. My best advice to you is: Stay independent, stay 100% Honest, and keep making good videos. Then start a Paypal, a Patreon, sell merch, etc... If you don't then you will lose all credibility. You could get any freebie that you want, and be 100% in your reviews, that people still won't fully trust you just because you got the items for free. What counts is what people will be thinking of you, not what you are.

    • @zacmagers
      @zacmagers Месяц назад

      Im really glad you brought this up...this gives me a chance to personally revisit my channel foundations, think it through and share my vision, lets dig into this : Before I refreshed the channel towards outdoors adventures and gear, I had a very humbling ( even embarrassing ) brief exchange of emails with Dan Durston. For months I had seen the writing on the wall at my previous decade plus employment, so in my office I started a concept window in my office. Full of dry erase concept notes on my interior office windows, post it notes everywhere, refined feedback from my professional coach and therapist, I was ready to launch my refresh towards the outdoors. Boldly, foolishly, I reached out to Dan to share my vision and asked if there was anything I could do to provide review / feedback on his new exciting product lines. Dan went on to explain ( kindly ) that I had quite a long road ahead of me, and the reviews that really matter to a business like his are from channels with significant influences and followers that can get the word out. He gave me examples of channels that he would do business with and what would you know, its the very channels you mentioned. I accepted that information and countered with the fact I was not looking for a hand out / free gear. I was happy to pay for shipping on a test product, hell Ill even buy the product, I just want a chance to collaborate in the sense of having a business backing in my review and special insight into their development and designs so I could maybe be of any help. The answer was no haha. That was an eye opener that I was venturing into something I wasn't prepared for and I had some choices to make. So I sold my car, and now finding myself unemployed, literally spent every dollar and more of my entirety of unemployment checks on gear I believed in. I was taking the long road on this and I made the moves to carve my own path. In my observations through watching Becker, My Life, Justin, Miranda, there was a observable difference in how they talked about gear that was obtained by mail in or sponsorship, and Ive discussed a few times on this channel that I did not believe that to be the best course of direction / goal for me. I respect what they have all accomplished, but A: that market is saturated heavily on YT, and B: "influencer" is not a goal for me or this channel. I don't even call myself a legitimate you tuber. A major portion of my professional background comes from supply Chain / Materials Management / design, and besides just starting up a new hobby and a mental way to recover from my career temporally going off course, my goal is to apply what I had learned to the area of outdoors gear. An example I would give relating to this video is, if I had a chance to offer suggestion to the Hest team, Id highly recommend they supply a carry case for removed foam. They have remnant fabric where they are having the pillow shell made, cheap labor and low cost, with a non water resistant YKK sipper and reuse of remnant fiber for foam storage an a high price tag item, they could have removed a potential sales objective. That kind of collaboration potential is very exciting to me. I paid money for the product, Im financially and mentally invested in this gear, I have some ideas I would love to talk with your team about, so on. That sounds amazing to me. Now back to freebies. I believe there is a genuine solid place for this. But I also see this only going one way if you want to remain credible and reliable. If I was to buy a product that I genuinely found to be a benefit to my gear list, actually a need or improvement to my outdoors experience, and the company behind that product was legit, how cool would it be to collaborate on design improvements, test out their next iterations, and establish a couple giveaways of the product tested or new product giveaway. Its a product I independently reviewed, helped with design iterations, and just want to get some of the product in the hands of someone that really could use a break with some free gear so they can enjoy the awesome outdoors. Everyone wins In this scenario. One random day I came across a product that interested me, I thought it was unusual but potentially an improvement to my load out and backpacking experience. I did an out of plan review, mentioned an improvement I would appreciate seeing as a user, and that company is now a paid member of the channel and one year later, that product improvement suggestion his the market. Now Im not sure if my suggestion was the reason this new product came out, but it did come out and I see that as success. I remain firm in staying independent in the sense of what gear I choose to discuss, how I achieved getting that gear, my genuine opinions of the gear, and I agree with you that this will show through in the videos, and your suggestions on channel direction remind me that there is a market of folks that want this, they are tired of paid actors essentially, so thank you for taking the time to recommend what you have and care. I appreciate you !

      Looking back I should have at least filmed pulling it out of the freezer…this was a fun little vid to make tho :) The pillow is legit for sure, base camping for a week with my usual Nemo pillow would have given me some major neck pain, BUT, it’s $120 bucks and that’s a lot of money for a pillow. I’m not sure if that’s the cost of having a business in California or taking advantage of how camping gear general prices are really high, so as nice as it is, it’s still just a pillow and at that cost there certainly are better options. If it wasn’t for the 25% off labor day sale I wouldn’t have done it. If it’s in your budget, it’s certainly nice, but if it’s not, you aren’t missing out and you can certainly pick up a $30-60 pillow from Target or whatever and be just as happy, maybe even better off

    How do you think the Lone Peak 8 will perform in wet conditions? I just heard some negative posts about that. I ordered Lone Peaks last week because I am going to run/walk in Czech hills and some Czech guy was quite positive about them (not especially the 8). In The Netherlands, where I live, you can't buy Altra shoes in a shop, so it was a bit of a guess ordering them via the internet. They are a little too wide (what did you mean with cork sole, can that help too?) and now I hear about problems on slippery terrain. Makes me insecure....

    • @zacmagers
      @zacmagers Месяц назад

      Howdy there! Nice to see a comment from Netherlands nice to meet you. So the cork sole : In my Salomon Ultra 4 I got these inserts called SOLE. They are made from cork, and you put them in the oven so you can form them to your feet they are super nice! I tried them in the Lone Peak and they just don’t have to room for inserts at all so I’m back at the stock inserts. If they are too wide I’d start with checking out medium thickness socks and see how that feels. As far as wet surfaces : I too don’t put all the trust in the world in these. Not that they don’t have grip, they certainly do. Are they Vibram grip, no sir. In using the Lone Peak 8 a few times over the year so far, they honestly did fine. I’m just aware when I wear these they aren’t like my Bedrock sandals with a Vibram sole or the Olympus 5, and I’m just a little more cautious. Doesn’t mean you are all over the place slipping, just pay attention to your footing like you would be doing regardless. These shoes are great I think they do a pretty good job for the cost. Out and about on the dirt and whatnot, totally fine Thanks for checking out the vid!

    • @CaraKönigsblau
      @CaraKönigsblau 7 дней назад

      So for winter usage with some snow it would be important to pick a shoe with vibram? Because i was thinking about buying the lone peak 8 for this winter, i’m usually wearing regular barefoot shoes, not trail running. But I really hate the thought of buying winter boots which i can only use 3 weeks a year.

    Had to laugh at your concern for your second tent's feelings. I just bought my second Copper Spur 2 weeks ago (my first one blew away). Half price because they are discontinued. Had to make my own ground sheet. Setting that up makes me realize how easy the Xmid is to set up. Having clothes lined myself numerous times I use reflective Tenacious tape to make a flag at eye level and belt buckle level. I found my conscious connects the dots and draws a line to the stake forcing me to look down saving the pending disaster.

    • @zacmagers
      @zacmagers Месяц назад

      Your tent blew away !!? That’s wild, that’s got to be a terrible feeling, watching your tent gently gain air speed and float into the unknown .. Glad you got another tent tho, but it’s a shame they are discontinued! I was in San Louis Obispo a few weeks ago and they had a Copper Spur 3 for like 35% off or something and I wondered ..is this a model close out sell or what? I haven’t seen what may be replacing it. That’s a good idea with the two separate eye and stake level indications actually, that might be better than replacing all this line ( which definitely isn’t reflective after checking later ) I may give that a go. But, during the last week in the Sequoias I was imagining this tarp with some reflective orange or red lines…that might look pretty slick as a color contrast!

    • @GarryCollins-ec8yo
      @GarryCollins-ec8yo Месяц назад

      @zacmagers yeah, I had it set up in the yard drying out after a wet trip, 6 stakes but empty. I noticed a storm popped up with strong winds so I went outside to collect the tent. Gone. I spent hours and walked miles. I live in the country and am surrounded by tall trees so it must have gone vertical quickly and picked up a strong crosswind. I often wonder who received a $600 tent that day.

    Sixty years + ago, I got paid to survey/map forest trees in Northern California. I carried a compass, no food, a Biltmore stick, a metal tablet, a mechanical counter, a canteen belt (but drank from streams), a .22 cal pistol, (survival tool and noisemaker), a hardhat, a knife or two, and keys. Black bear encounters? About one per year. Once, while traversing through a second-growth white fir thicket with good visibility I felt the call of Nature, so to speak. I stopped on the hillside by a small, bent-over dead tree about twenty feet uphill from a large "windthrow" (a large uprooted tree) with a rootplate that stuck up about twelve feet. Taking off all my gear, I grabbed the bent-over dead tree and began to soil the soil of the forest floor. I heard some rustling in the dead twigs and needles, and was rewarded by the sight of the cutest little brown baby black bear, soon followed by a black baby black bear. How CUTE! They didn't see me. Too busy exploring. Then, the top of the windthrown stump began growing bear hair, twelve feet in the air. Now in such a lowly compromised position, I was, shall we say, in NO position to slay 500+ pounds of black bear momma. Or argue with her. I had no choice but to apologize for messing up her living room floor, and behave myself. In s l o w-motion, I pulled up my "Can't Bust "Ems," followed by my belt/pistol, notebook, and Biltmore Stick, took a compass reading, and still in slow-motion, restarted my survey strip. Momma snorted a bluff-charge once, and I kept moving, quartering down the hill to the edge of the thicket. I chanced a glance. Momma was still looking at me. I went on, and the bears went back to their business--singing, I suppose, ruclips.net/video/RZH2bmbUTl4/видео.html This is what a brother from Ethopia who made 16mm films of himself unarmed in the midst of lions, elephants, in Africa. "Respect the animals," he said.

    Two other organic hippies and myself just out of highschool in 73 decided to conquer every mountain in California over 10K. When we were in the forest we acted like animals. The first time we had a black bear come into camp, we got up like crazy wildmen and started growling loud and chasing the bear, he ran like hell. If we saw a bear on the trail we'd chase him. Been doing it ever since and they'd always run. Never had one turn on us. We got caught by a ranger chasing bears in a national park and was given a strong warning. We did the same with mountain lions and they took off too. Why? Because the last thing they expect is something chasing them.

      On this channel I’ve purchased a few items in spite of the bad reviews, and so far had great experiences ! I’ve just tried my best to really gauge if the bad review is because of misuse of the product, someone who is just seemingly really hard on product outside of design, or just straight having a bad day. If the product has a ton of 2-4 star reviews, I generally think that shows a very true response to a bad product, but if I see mostly 4-5 stars and some sprinkled in 1 stars…that makes me suspicious of potential negative vibe folks just looking to express bad vibes. For these shoes in particular, I can’t speak to long term use just yet, but they just took me to the peak of San Jacinto and they did amazing! Not a single sore spot on these feet’s whatsoever. So far for me, they rock and if they are on sale for Labor Day, definitely may be worth investing in ESPECIALLY if you are a weekend day hiker or just do a few trips a year, should be totally fine. Hope you find what works best for you! Cheers

So ya maybe bears not so interested in messing us up for good reason but how long till they realize we ain't what we were and decide to go for it more than they currently do? @zacmagers 2 месяца назад

      Us vs them. We are not trusted with self protection as citizens. And citizens sometimes do stupid things like use it against each other in a fight over campsite parking spaces. Just a theory … The fact THEY can carry guns / tasers / paintball guns / spray and WE cannot, shows we either aren’t trusted or we messed up that trust. Well at least a couple people messed up the trust. So someone WILL eventually be severely injured or killed in Sequoia / Kings Canyon National Park and they will have to revisit this

    • @rustyrebar123
      @rustyrebar123 2 месяца назад

      @@zacmagers well that's the thing though, you can carry a gun with a CCW, but you can't carry best spray, the most effective deterrent to a bear attack and it will do no long term harm to the bear and probably teach them to avoid humans. There is like zero sense to it.

    I figured out why I enjoy your videos, other than your style and entertainment value. So many vloggers get a couple of years experience then grab a camera and film their "expertise" which often leaves me shaking my head. You flat out say you're new at this, come join the learning experience with me. 👍. Nice tip on the pot lid. I'm playing around with a new pot (Maple Fire, efficient and has grooves for the stove arms) so I'll keep using that lid. But I now have your tip in my mind should I change back.

    •  2 месяца назад

      Zac keeps it real 💯 I’ve been considering Petrel. Would fit Windmaster with Triflex. The lid is heavy on that one.

      Thanks Garry much appreciated! For a min there I think I started making a few vids that potentially suggested I had more experience than I do, so I’m making an effort to make sure if anything I remind myself I’m new at this:) And that’s OK, long road of discovery ahead of me, adventure awaits ! That’s funny I was just looking into that from the other comment about Petrel, I was wondering if that is the Maple Fire. The Toaks / stove set up always strikes me as the one heavy gust or dog running by disaster waiting to happen. The grooves on the Maple Fire look at least 50-75% better as far as tip over preventing, although enough push and the whole gas / pot is coming down but still this is an improvement. Swap out that lid and it looks like a winner to me! Plus if there is some efficiency build into the fins on the bottom = less fuel use, that’s a big plus right there. And protective handles!
