"No surprises or twists". Sorry sweetheart but that's a blatant lie. You're saying you expected the pope to be the villain the whole time? What about Ryudo being possessed by the horns of Valmar? "The game is not that deep" so Mareg's take on free will and individuality didn't serve as an apparatus of comprehension for Tio's personal growth and Ryudo's character development. What about Elena coming to terms with the death of her omnipotent deity? Do you even know what the word deep means? Show me a modern rpg that has more depth than Grandia 2. Just name one. I'll wait......
The SEGA feel might be, because Grandia II was originally released for Dreamcast! I played it on PS2 back in the day, and loved it! Glad to see you had fun with it too. Great video!
I haven't played grandia 1 or 2 in forever and didn't even know a hd collection existed on the switch till I came across this review. I actually loved Grandia 2 so much as a kid I named my cat after Merig. I just bought a copy so thank you your channel is great
The battle music is still engraved in my brain. And from time to time I go back to listening some highlights of the incredible OST. Also, my favorite part is the one with Arya, the girl with the eyes of Valmar. The dtruggle of her mom trying to cure her is heartbreaking. Props for the vid
I just wish that Ryudo kept his sassiness at full blast near the end. And in all fairness, its twists were pretty decently revolutionary when it first came out around the same time as Tales of Symphonia and Final Fantasy X (all three of whom basically had the same plot, but done in such different ways and released so close to one another that it's extremely unlikely that they were copying from one another).
@@russellmania5349 That is some of the most baseless blasphemy I have ever heard. Skies of Arcadia is good but that lazy story and turn based battle system don't even belong in the same conversation as Grandia 2. I urge you to reconsider your rating for one if not both of these games.👎

I had a feeling you would prefer Grandia 2 over 1. While I also love Grandia 2, the first Grandia hit harder for me and I think a big part of it for me is the Ghibli-esque vibe it has going for it, I think it gives it a unique flavor. Grandia 2 does have an edgy 90's anime vibe that I also fuck with though.
Grandia 2 is one of the greatest RPGs ever! 1 and 2 are just amazing, but 2 to me is the better one. I particularly love the twist on the "battle of good and evil" at the time it was actually among the first few times they did a similar twist so that was a very "whoa" moment! Ryudo is a great character and Millenia is indeed best girl! Also shououts to the Portuguese lines on the song. LPPTBAVAAEHFLFPVVGs are always GOLDEN! Gotta play like SO2 and Thousand Arms for even more lines to that segment, lol!

I am not an RPG guy infact I don’t even know as an 11 year old how I was intrigued about the game to even rent it. Probably has to do with seeing Milenia in game art lol, however this game is the only RPG I finished start to end. I can literally pinpoint the time of my life to starting abd playing and completing this game and it felt like a saga where it took months to complete. I think I rented it every week until I got it for Christmas. I recall even going to a cousins house at that time and experiencing Halo on his newly gifted Xbox and all the while just thinking I can’t wait to get back home to play this on my Dreamcast. I haven’t played sense, and never touched anything else in the franchise but for some reason the game, the atmosphere, characters and story just felt like an adventure, an epic one. I wonder if I play this 20 years on if I would feel the same, or if I would even have the time to appreciate it. Nonetheless this game holds a special place in my heart. It reminds me of the early 2000s, when gaming was still a bit of a mystery, a bit niche but just starting to fully explode into the thing it is now
Very well said I completely agree with your comment. I'm the same this is one of the only rpgs I finished from start to finish with Final Fantasy X being the second. But this is still the greatest rpg in my opinion.

I remember reading walkthroughs of this game in GamePro magazine. So jealous I didn’t have a Dreamcast. Never got around to it even after all the ports. Loved your review. It confirmed a lot of suspicions and curiosities. Keep up the awesomeness.
So youtube sucks at letting me know when you upload. I loved this video very much. Grandia 2 is a good throwback. I never got the one for the Switch or anything through kind of curious if I should go back to it after watching this video. I NEVER knew Ariel was also The Wings of Valmar. Where were you when I was growing up? I could have used a friend who got some of the same taste I got. When I was younger I tried to get my friends into Grandia 2...lol 2k clearly always won out though.
I played a pirated copy of Grandia II on the Dreamcast over fifteen years ago (I confess) which had a bug that caused the game to freeze close to the end. Bought the game on steam a few years ago and it did that thing that you want when you revisit your childhood memories: it was just as awesome and just as satisfying to play as it was back in the day. It's one of the most underrated JRPGs ever.
Grandia 2 has that classic Sega Dreamcast “blue skies” look that is still such a standout. I think it plays a big part in the appeal of the game. I also hope another Dreamcast classic “Skies of Arcadia” gets a Switch HD remaster soon.
Seeing all the overly-long animations for those magic attacks brought a wave of nostalgia to me. Excellent review as usual, Lady! I still have this game on PS2. To date, still the only Grandia game I've ever played. I got SUPER invested in min-maxing every character. Tio was absolutely my favorite in this regard. Like Natalia from "Tales Of The Abyss", I didn't love her as a character, but had the most fun with her over anyone else in combat. It's been long enough since I last played that I don't remember what the specific items are called but, first, I gave her the item that lets you teleport to anywhere on the battlefield. Then, whenever I got...was it a weapon? A book? Whatever gave your character an extra attack when equipped, I would give that to Tio, so she always had the largest number of attacks. At the beginning of every battle, Tio would instantly teleport into a monsters face and strike it 3 or 4 times. I was also increasing her Speed the entire time, so after she teleported and attacked, she would run far away so they couldn't retaliate. BUT THEN...I discovered those bird-thingies that drop Seed of Speed's; and it was over. Tio already had the most ACT and SPD of all of my characters, and I just kept increasing it, to the point where, at the beginning of every single battle, I just chose an action for Tio immediately, before anything started moving; then after that action, her little icon zoomed past everyone else's, right to the action spot again. Tio just got to take 2 turns before the battle even started. Naturally both of those turns involved her rushing in like a speedster and hitting an enemy 6 or 7 times (I forget what the max number of hits could be for 1 action). After this, while a NORMAL character would calmly jog to one side for the amount of time the game allowed for that animation, Tio's SPD was so high that she would just run a few laps around the field, like The Flash trying to create a tornado. Meanwhile, Roan, who was still pretty fast compared to the others, received the teleportation item, as it was basically redundant for Tio, and also got the androids hand-me-down attack item whenever I got a new item that granted more attacks. So in most of my battles going forward, you had these 2 little a-holes zipping around the field, basically untouchable, relentlessly attacking everything in sight...and eventually, Ryudo or Elena might get to do something cool once or twice. There's of course something to be said for games that remain challenging and test you the same amount the whole way through, but I adore any RPG that allows you to transform your characters into broken, disrespectful monstrosities by the end.
Grandia 2 is so fantastic and there's nothing else like it really, kind of like Legend of Dragoon. Some flaws tend to show with age, but the goodness involved severely outshadows any negative flaws with the game. Currently playing it on Hard Mode and LOVING the challenge some bosses actually present. Fantastic and honest review.
"It looks Sega" yes!!! I totally get that!! This game just screams "Dreamcast game" to me and absolutely flies me back to that great year. Had no idea there was a port on switch or this channel existed, can't wait to dive in
Pro tip- Lvl up Tio. Give her all magic+spd bonus. If i remember correctly- she can use 5 dragon zaps while other chars do full cycle atack. Its insane how op Tio was
I was a massive fan of this game when it first came out on the Dreamcast. I hadn't played the previous one (due to lack of porting to UK), but picked it up due to wanting more rpgs and the Dreamcast not having more options. Millenia and Mareg rocked, and the final boss theme was awesome. On the subject of voices: This game did use some more experienced voice actors than the previous one. Elena's voice is trying to sound softer/nerdier than usual, she's FemShep/90sBlackcat.
Grandia is one of my favorite RPGs of all time and not just because the main character and I share the same name. Now I just wish beyond all that we would get a lunar collection for switch
Wow they (Super Derek) weren't kidding when they said if you like the gameplay in Trails then Grandia needs to be what i play. I can definitely see the inspirations Trails took from Grandia from Turn Order Manipulation to separating Magic and unique action gauges. Now i want to play this series even now knowing this. Thanks! Great review
Been wanting to play this one for a while, but I’ve hear the switch version has a lot of glitches. Has it been patched? Also, do you have to play 1 before 2 or is it any order?
Grandia 2 on PC was my first ever JRPG I ever played and incidentally also the first game I ever played in English. This both awakened my wish of getting more fluent in English as well as my love for JRPGs in general so while it is a run-of-the-mill JRPG with one of the best battle systems ever it fundamentally changed my life in different ways I definitely didn't see coming way back then. Glad that others also enjoy this game and have fun playing it! Edit: Small addendum: Ryudo DOES get a skill after [spoiler]: His ultimate attack only gets unlocked after said boss fight.
I'm glad Grandia 2 means so much to you!! Its the best!! Also for the skill thing... (SPOILERS) Im talking he doesn't get a deformity related to a horn. Not a skill. Even tho his skill has nothing to do with a horn...which I also think is lame.
True, he doesn't get all deformed... well, he kinda does for a very short time before the final dungeon but I get what you mean. My assumption is that this is lore-related and similar to how Elena also doesn't change physically because neither is tempted by the power (considering the origins of Valmar and Granas). The skill thing is also fair; the skill itself is a throwback to Grandia I so I still enjoy him getting it but having a skill more closely related to the in-game events would have been cooler and made more sense lore-wise. And yeah! While Grandia is not my favourite JRPG of all time (that would be Final Fantasy IX) and while more modern games have made more out of its battle system and mechanics (Trails in the Sky/Trails of Zero/Trails of Cold Steel) it was in a way a groundbreaking game for its time that inspired many JRPG classics to come (and as stated heavily influenced my life) so I am extremely grateful for it being a thing and for others to cover it/enjoy it. Glad to see that I am not the only one who loves it to death!
Just wanted to State as nobody in the comment stated this the main character is the same voice actor as Leonardo from the OG teenage mutant Ninja turtles series. Kind of surprised nobody said that
I played this back on the good ol Dreamcast back in the day. I remember thinking this is the best looking game I've ever played well next to Skies of Arcadia.
Played this on Dreamcast back in the day. Absolutely loved it. The battle system is terrific and the soundtrack is special. I remember not even realizing to use Magic Coins/Special coins until 1/3 through the game or something like that. Hah. But, it was so cool when I realized I could upgrade my magic and had a silo's worth of coins to do whatever I wanted. Also, Millenia is the best. I don't play many JRPGs anymore so this one is permanently solidified in my Top 10.
Grandia 2 is one of my favorite JRPGS ever. Still to this day, it remains among some of my favorite video games ever created. I highly recommend it to everyone! Thank you for such and elegant review and video, much love and blessings to you!
I forgot I even owned a Dreamcast! I pumped serious hours into this game some time after release. But, try as I might, I can’t remember much. I do recall having a good time.
The original Grandia is a standout game from my youth, and an all-time favorite, but surprisingly I have barely played Grandia II at all. I did snag the Switch collection (and a PS2 copy for dirt cheap around the same time) so it's one of the big games in my backlog I'm looking forward to :D
After defeating Melfice, Ryudo gets a powerful special attack that hits all enemies - Sky Dragon Slash if I'm not mistaken -, but you need to spend SC to unlock it
Yeah but it's not a demonic power...not like the tongue or wings. It's just...a sword move. Yeah its powerful but it didn't match with the horn or change his appearance
This is the greatest Rpg ever made. Great battle system simple but also deep with lots of upgrades to your party. Great picture but most of all awesome character development and beautiful story. Long Live Mareg!!
This was my first real JRPG I played all the way back when it was on the dreamcast. Super cheesy and cliche by today's standards but at the time it was the most insane and amazing experience I had with a game and kicked off my now lifelong love of the this genre. Despite it's age, the battle system still holds up so well and i can't believe more games don't emulate this series approach to combat. Grandia 3 and Grandia Extreme are inferior in many ways but still super fun and I would really love a remaster of those two games as well. Or even better a Grandia 4. This series does not get the love it deserves
Loooooooooooooooooove grandia 2 so much. The characters, music, battle system, and spell animations were so amazing. I'd go so far to say it's one of the games that inspired me to get into storytelling and game design. And yes, Millenia is best girl.
I stumbled across your channel while looking for 3DS gameplay footage. I really want to encourage you to stick with this. So much of female gaming is currently dominated by non-gamers on Twitch. I could tell immediately by the way you talked about the games and how you presented yourself, that you are a true gamer with a unique voice. Gaming needs more female voices like yours.
I loved Grandia 2 back in the day on the Dreamcast (PS2 version was bad). I have this on the Switch and need to get back to it. I am surprised you didn't enjoy "Deep fried goodness!"
I finally got the collection on sale I was lucky enough to have the money the one or two times a year it goes on sale I'm playing the first one now I haven't played the second one since it was on the Dreamcast but watching this takes me back
I know this video is like a year old…and you probably mentioned it at some point in the video but do you plan on reviewing the 3 grandia game. A lot of people don’t like it not sure why though. It’s not a bad game.
I'm rather attached to the voice-acting as well, but that's probably because English isn't my native language and I played this game for the first time when I was around 11/12. The box was actually in German, but there was a tiny text saying "Game in English only". At the time I knew a little English, but some stuff was hard to understand, but most of the battle bits I would understand (even if I had to look up a word or two) Every time i replayed it however I would understand a little more! Always getting really nostalgic when playing this one. It was also like my third JRPG after FFX and Secret of Mana.
I enjoyed the voice acting section again. I gotta say, given your strong dislike for DQ 9 because of the silent party and your love for the cast of this and other games im gonna again recommend Mass Effect. 2 specifically. The first one has a burdensome inventory system and #2 gets you up to speed pretty fast. The cast is memorable, enjoyable (except the space racist), and diverse in personalities.

Its insane how op Tio was
I assumed Ryudo didn't get a ability when he was tainted because Millenia sealed the power in him and he didn't give into the power like his brother
Forgot about the VO segment, and I'm glad you did your takes. Now I need to play Grandia II again, maybe on my DC that I still have? idk
I WISH Breath of Fire 3 would get a port. I miss being able to play that
Dude same!!
I think Tio has a touching story. Especially because she is under Mareg‘s wings and we all know what happens to him.
Great game, great review
“That
Was
Beautiful you guyyys!”
Lol, I loved the voice acting bit. I’m surprised you didn’t try to do Dragon Slash! 😂 Amazing review as always!
This was the game I played all August long in the summer of 2002, nervously waiting for another year in high school
Yes. Fantastic review of, probably, my favorite game that I haven't played yet.
Ahh, the summer of 2001. Still remember this game
My favorite grandia game, great review!
Grandia 2 is one of my favorite jrpgs. The music was so good
Just wanted to State as nobody in the comment stated this the main character is the same voice actor as Leonardo from the OG teenage mutant Ninja turtles series. Kind of surprised nobody said that
Hahaha! I love your VA portion. So funny! Milennia is the best character.
Great review!
loved that game. super glad I picked up the limited run print while it was still available
Yeah its hella expensive now!
the character models remind me of the human character models from sonic adventure, just to add onto that sega dreamcast roots
I played this back on the good ol Dreamcast back in the day.
I remember thinking this is the best looking game I've ever played well next to Skies of Arcadia.
You had the correct opinion. ;P
Grandia's music is incredible! My favorite track in Grandia 2 is Fight Ver. 3
I forgot I even owned a Dreamcast! I pumped serious hours into this game some time after release. But, try as I might, I can’t remember much. I do recall having a good time.
Man how did I miss this on switch!
Also, Powerstone....i havent heard that name in years...
Love this game, the special and magic coins were really confusing first time playing it though.
The original Grandia is a standout game from my youth, and an all-time favorite, but surprisingly I have barely played Grandia II at all. I did snag the Switch collection (and a PS2 copy for dirt cheap around the same time) so it's one of the big games in my backlog I'm looking forward to :D
How does the switch version compare to the Dreamcast version i grew up with?
Game Arts did some awesome work in the 90s.
Ayy. Grandia II and Tales of Graces f in one sentence. Two of my favorite JRPGs. Play them both at least once a year. :)
Man I wish I had the time to replay them!!
Also I loved this game back on Dreamcast I wish we could get skies of Arcadia for switch.
This is the greatest Rpg ever made. Great battle system simple but also deep with lots of upgrades to your party. Great picture but most of all awesome character development and beautiful story. Long Live Mareg!!
Isn’t one of Ryudo’s skill attacks specifically obtained after defeating his brother?
Yes.
Do I need to play Gracdia 1 before playing Grandia 2?
Not at all!!
@@PelvicGaming thanks =)
Your reviews have really made me interested in Grandia- but two big JRPGs bundled together is going to take me so long to get to
This was my first real JRPG I played all the way back when it was on the dreamcast.
Totally one of my favorites
Loooooooooooooooooove grandia 2 so much. The characters, music, battle system, and spell animations were so amazing. I'd go so far to say it's one of the games that inspired me to get into storytelling and game design. And yes, Millenia is best girl.
The eyes of valmar arc is one of the most saddest story I've heard in a game.
I finally got the collection on sale I was lucky enough to have the money the one or two times a year it goes on sale I'm playing the first one now I haven't played the second one since it was on the Dreamcast but watching this takes me back
I so love the first 2 Grandia games...
I hate that I didn't buy the LRG edition when they sold it.
Readjusting settings every time you boot the game up?! Good heavens, that's a weird problem that will annoy the heck out of me when I play this.
Not on dreamcast or plantation 2 if I remember correctly
I know this video is like a year old…and you probably mentioned it at some point in the video but do you plan on reviewing the 3 grandia game. A lot of people don’t like it not sure why though. It’s not a bad game.
I've put getting this off for a long time, I think imma get it. I loved the first grandia and this looks even better.
Oooo i hope you enjoy!!
@@PelvicGaming thank you! UwU
Looking forward to emulating this on steam deck.
I loved this style of game play! It reminds me of Child of Light! I first played it on Dreamcast. 😊😊😊
Grandia 2 is a masterpiece and I wish it got more hype. Definitely in my top 10 games.
Honestly I didn't expect Grandia 2 to be one of my favorite jrpgs of all time.
