- Welcome to another episode of Islands in the League with JJ Redick presented by Draft Kings. In this video we discuss our favorite "ALFRED's" of the year. Alfreds being people who shine in their roles - players like Derrick White, Josh Hart and more. Then we do another "build around" segment - this time with Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy. And finally, we take a look at Championship odds with our resident expert, Josh Appelbaum.

Derrick White is playin like muthafuckin Batman right now
true
No one seen Alfred put on the cape?!?!?
Gimmie Igoudala all over again 😭
Playing like dooky rn
Not tonight 💔😢
JJ being practically in love with Derrick White has been one of the funniest running gags in the NBA circle this season
A bromance
derrick white is one of the most underrated players in the NBA.
@@kevingriffith677 is he tho??? He’s been praised a lot for what he’s been bringing to the Celtics these last couple of years and deservedly so.
Backwards hat JJ needs to make an appearance on First Take
I would definitely watch to just see that!
@@williestyle35 They all need to do a "backward Hat" segment; hell, do an entire week of hat backwards shows.
Cowherd would have a heart attack.
You know for a fact Stephen A be rocking the Snapback with pride broski lol 😂 😂 @@kwilliams1958
@@MrCgr33Or maybe he would join them! LOL...He knows he is making the "memes" in the utube wasteland!
14:44 JJ can barely hold back his laughter as he adds Wemby to his fever dream of a basketball team. This segment is so hilariously dumb. I love it.
I don't know why, but when he started describing the first guy off the bench, my mind immediately went to Al'Horford...
As a side note, he might be the greatest Alfred in the last 15 years.
Dumb is the right word.
He could make it interesting yet ...
@@a-j.2002 how is it dumb, not everything is about superteam or dream team, it's about being practical
Jeff Green belongs in the Alfred hall of fame.
So does Al'Horford, perhaps the biggest Alfred in the last 15 years.
I’d say Andre igudala by a mile but he’s so good you almost can’t just consider him a role player
@@S-TierIguess Finals MVP might disqualify you for an Alfred award lol
@@derekharris96he still played an Alfred role to win that award
@@badbasic Al Horford wasn't always an alfred though.
Conley is most definitely an Alfred but, Naz Reid is more like a Nightwing #letsmakethismorecomplicated
Who's Red Hood? Rudy last year?
@@kb5509these are the questions the people want answers to!
@@kb5509 Pat bev is red hood because he celebrated their play-in tourney win and then they shipped him out. He had to be feeling betrayed, just like red hood

It’s criminal that TJ McConnell didn’t play the end of the last IND vs. NYK game
Could not believe he was on the bench
@@carlostejada1654unreal
This is where coaches differentiate themselves. Last night was just a "plug in standard closing 5" when it should have been "TJ is playing out of his mind, which 4 starters should close the game with him"
Knicks need that man backing-up Brunson
@@MattGarcia-il9lxThat's a great question. TJ was dictating what to do in the game. He had like 12-13 assist
Josh Hart is surprising the hell out of me during the playoffs. He's playing like he's trying to get a max contract next year.
This is how Josh Hart has always played. Doesn't get the respect he deserves.
bro even last year in the playoffs i legit thought he was 6'8 with how he was getting offensive boards, and now he's leading the postseason??? it's wild af
@@sangun123 I had to google his height up to make sure he wasn't really a 7 footer. You look up and he has 20 pts and 20 boards. HOW SWAY?
these guys aren’t even role players 😂 they’re just selfless players
When I listen to JJ talk basketball I feel like I’m in a math class.
JJ…. Dude. I get it, you wanted all of the Alfred’s to be playoff guys… but hear me out. The injury to Malik Monk was the reason the Kings missed the playoffs this year. Go look at what happened to the kings season once he was out. That guy is the soul of that team. It is a tragedy that he did not make your list.
JJ my brother - do not back down from the backwards hat movement. You and Dan Quinn will usher in an era of greatness for the backwards hat #RaiseHail
Haha #raisehail
This video is a prime example of why I subscribed, love the Alfred analogy and subsequent team. Honestly, you're a better broadcaster than you were a player and I think you were a very good player. Your NBA career was JJ, your channel is MJ. Keep up the good work!
I only really watch my team, the Pacers. But I have no idea how people aren't raving about TJ McConnell, the man Shaq refers to, affectionately, as "Rudy." I try not to be too much of a Homer, but I've watched him dismantle almost every team in the league. With layups. And the vibes he puts out.
Standout performance to me was against the Thunder, near the end of the season. It was late in the 1stQ when the bench got put in, 10 points down. Through the end of the 1st and into the 2nd, the Pacers bench destroyed three waves of Thunder that were thrown at them, going on a run that swung them from 10 points down to 10 points up. They had the ball zipping around every which way, making cuts, finding the open guy, and racking up assists. It was... beautiful. And, in the middle of it all, TJ McConnell. All due credit to Obi 3 Kenobi, Stix, Ben Shepard, and Dougie McBuckets for playing their parts, but, thanks to TJ, they looked like a full roster of all-stars for 6 or 7 glorious minutes.
TJ changes the outcome of games. As a backup, and counterpoint, to Haliburton, in this "fast-and-free" Pacers system, he's a perfect fit. Milwaukee managed to keep TJ contained for most of the 1st round, but it wasn't an accident. They changed their entire defensive scheme, switching to a zone, when TJ was on the floor. Don't sleep on TJ, because I guarantee you that the scouting report of your favorite team isn't.
Also, you should all know about "Bloody TJ." He normally doesn't shoot 3s, BUT, if TJ's blood is spilt upon the court of play, his soul becomes one with the entire sport of basketball, and he gains the additional power to knock down three-pointers without missing. I first witnessed this miracle in the last game of the season, against the Hawks.
He's good and he's talked about, but there are other guys too
Building a team around Cousy where I would have ANYONE in the starting five handle the ball instead of him is crazy work, lol
they dribbled like that (straight up and down) because at the time anything horizontal, diagonal, etc., was called a carry. The game looks completely different then bc of all the rules/enforcement of certain rules are completely different. That's why I think it's unfair to compare eras
@@bleeperton181 I understand that part, I’m saying that after hearing Cousy’s shooting numbers and knowing that he’s a great assist man, I would have put more shooting around him rather than four other guys who can be primary ball handlers.
I’m sure he’d adapt and still be great here (assuming the Time Machine shenanigans that go in with these hypotheticals), and it just makes it even better that all of them are great at dribbling
@@Jonathan-A.C.that’s not a given. Given how much money NBA players make today and how global the league is, you are competing with a talent pool that’s at least 100x in size. There’s no guarantee that the best player back then can even be a good player today with all the training etc, not players in the 50s. 90s and up yeah they have a chance
@@bleeperton181unfair to the old heads because they clearly arent better basketball players than current players😂
SIMONEFONTECCHIO gets some love!! Finally 💙 🇮🇹
Thank you, Sir!! This category needs more recognition in the league. My favorite players to watch! I watch the NBA now just out of the skill that all the players display. It's amazing indeed. But those players who go hard and show 110% grit make the game for me. Great list. PS. I loved your game at Duke but then missed your NBA career regrettably. Got back into the NBA post pandemic. So, I'm a big fan of your work and you have the best hair in the game. Love the POD and the commentator work. Keep up the great work. Go Duke!
Mike Conley mentioned list goated
Great picks!!
Whenever I hear about lists like this I immediately think Steven Adams. (Unfortunately out this season) The guy is the workhorse who makes it easy for his other team mates. He’s not trying to be the showboat but he’s definitely the guy who consistently delivers. Also he diffuses unnecessary player escalation. Solid player. 24/25 season with the Rockets will be exciting.
Best basketball podcaster by far, appreciate you for keeping it simple brotha
JJ was straight cheating in The Build Around segment😭 I think he should make it a bit challenging and make rookies off limit, and should take into account dude who would get a pay bump if they resigned today.
I mean Wemby is gonna be on a similar contract next year so you think he shouldn’t pick Wemby next year as well?Yh I agree he cheated a little but it’s what it is can’t change the contracts😂
Agreed. Bro basically chose 4 all stars💀
@@holdengoldston13 4 players that all easily could make all NBA. Probably it will be only 2, but all stars is underselling them :p
Exactly, it's why it's so easy to make a championship team, you can pick a guy who signed his contract 3 years ago before his prime
JJ you are a freakin' nutcase and I love every bit of it. I made this statement after hearing your choices for Bron & Wemby . . . this exercise is bananas. You are a breath of fresh air sir!
I hope everyone finds someone who loves them as much as JJ loves Derrick White, the Alfred 🐐
Them Christopher Nolan movies don't disappoint.
Timberwolves whole bench could be here, NAW, Slowmo, Naz
This is what I want to see. Giving the rest of the players props for doing their damn job extremely well.
It’s crazy you posted this today me and my brother were talking last night about dudes like Josh hart, Derrick white, Aaron Gordon who are stars in their roles and their respective teams would not be near as good without them or a player like them
Am I bad at counting or is that an 8 man rotation and not a 9 man rotation??
Counting is hard JJ, I get it 😂
id like to see how Marcus Smart performs as an Alfred next season
Please make a definitive Robin list of players.
So guys like AD, Kyrie, Booker. Basically guys that aren't good enough to be the best player on a championship team.
i mean, dbook was 2 games away from being the best player on a championship team
@@justinkelly8764Let's be real here, DBook is not him
@@justinkelly8764not to brag but I am 98 games away from being the best player on a championship team
KAT! He’s his best self in his current role. Still a star, with a little less pressure, he absolutely shines!
Add Jaylen Brown and Donovan Mitchell to the list
Man, love your podcasts!
Not sure how you are doing all this JJ. Putting in the work and it’s paying off. Take notes kids.
This video is one of the many reasons why JJ shouldn’t leave this job for a coaching job in the nba. The fans need this
i've been a neutral watcher this playoffs and i feel like the mavs role players especially the 2 wings (DJJ/PJ) have been severely underrated. the offense have been getting carried by offense by the stars but their defense made their system works especially when defending in space
Love your content JJ. Let’s be real, outside of Jalen Brunson… my entire Knicks squad is on the Alfred Squad 😂
Knew Josh Hart would be on here but glad Hartenstein was on here. People just completely disregard his impact, but the offense and defense are both entirely different when he’s on the floor
Ciao J.J., in Italy we call him SIMONEFONTECCHIO altogether and we love him. He will surely do even better in the coming seasons
: My list : Al Horford, Naz Reid, Josh Hart, DWhite, Lu Dort, Jalen Suggs, TJ McConnell, Herb Jones, PJ Wasington, Bobby Portis
This is the most Bill Simmons thing I’ve ever seen and I love it.
God damn i love when you go full youtube
Backwards hat JJ is the equivalent to Hoodie Melo, whole different beast!

lol nuggets boston preview shows how old the last segment is
I don’t get why he’d even include it
How the turn tables
We back
these are awesome
TJ was only 3rd string PG cause we were developing Drew Nembhard to be the future backup PG. Then we found he can play the 1-2 combo with Rese.
TJs talents were never in question. His ability was always high and known. His only issue was his timeline wasn't the same as the Pacers timeline at the start of the year.
Really didn't expect a clip from The Trip.
JJ has some taste!😂
Deep cut
I just knew we were getting a Josh Hart appreciation video today
JJ is the best former player turned commentator/analyst in the media. he needs his own show on TV
Yessss JJ Simone is a great role player, great call
I love this
You had me at Hart
Glad Grayson got a shoutout sad he left Memphis
Lol. Love the batman analogy.
Derrick white got tired of burying Batmans and just threw on the cape himself. ☘️
i think an interesting discussion could be how far does an all-alfred 15 man roster go in the playoffs
Congratulations Jokic on 3rd MVP!
Well deserved!! 👍👏🥳🥳🔥🔥
Alfred “Why do we turn our hats around Master JJ?.. So we can TURN THEM AROUND AGAIN!”
Love this. Gotta give flowers to people who want to win
Bro this starting 5 is CRAZY
Solid points, JJ… Being an Alfred just means you’re willing to cede the position to someone else as Batman. Even if that Alfred was at some point(s) a Batman
For example, Dwade and Shaq in 06.
Shaq was more of an Alfred (12 ppg and 8 rpg) for the finals
While Dwade 40 ppg
Dwade and LeBron, the first championship D wade was an Alfred
There is definitely no shame to being an Alfred! Because even hall of famers often times become Alfred’s in due time
Josh Hart vs IND played for the full 48 mins for both games🤯
Is this regular season award or including playoffs?
Rahhhh 🦅🦅Simone Fontecchio mentioned
tbh the whole knicks & wolves supporting cast could make it 😂
No cap💯
Build around Cousy
-Cousy
- Divincenzo
- Paolo Banchero
-Lauri M
-KAT
-Malik Monk
-Naz Reid
JJ is so good at being a believable troll 😹
JJ, love all the stats...big stats guy here. However, technically, Josh Hart may have the most rpg by a guard overall, but if you look minutes played, I believe Brandon Podziemski takes it
How many guards clean up stuff on the backside like KCP (yes I know Derrick White).
Also Aaron Gordon omission is a bit crazy, the Nuggets rely on AG more than the Suns do Grayson
Here for the Fontecchio love🗣️🇮🇹
I want to see the All Alfred Team for players whose teams didn't make the playoffs.
As long as Bobby rebounds, I think most in MKE would take a bullet for him
15 and 7 off the bench while shooting 50% from the field? I'll take 10 bullets for Mayor Bobby.
Terance Mann should be up for consideration for all Alfred team
As a Celtics fan im STOKED to see Horford get his flowers!
JJ just built the team the Celtics think they have now
That Jayson Tatum guy for Boston puts up decent numbers as a role player.
how can you put maxey over edwards for build around
IMO Best supporting players need at least two of these qualities.
1. Impact with Low usage. The ball should be in your "star" players hands as much as possible. An Alfred needs to make an impact without the ball.
2. Defense. No better way to make an impact without the ball. A high offense low defense players might make an impact but again and have their use off the bench, but again goes against my rule #1.
3. 3 point shooting. Nothing helps an offense like supporting players who can space the floor. High Def players with bad spacing can be good players, but they need to be EXCEPTIONAL Def players to do so.
4. Intangibles. Whether it be smarts, fight, leadership, Supporting players needs to contribute in any way possible, and although we can't quantify intangibles, supporting players with bad intangibles just ending up being a minus value player.
5. Bonus attributes go to such as a cheap contract, play making, rebounding, rim penetration/kickout skills.
The only thing I feel this show needs is a bit more graphic support. I know this might be an stylistic choice but the entire bottom left corner was empty.
How about a the faces of the people that have been selected? the 10 squares there and fill them up as you name the player...
really confused how mike conley is making it but not AG. Definition of the role player
When it comes to discarding useful role players for no good reason, my clippers are unmatched 😭😭 good to see I Hart getting some love
Derek White new nickname “The Butler”
Josh Hart, Donte Divincenzo, and Derrick White should be everyone's favorite role players
The idea of Batman, Robin, Alfred. People gotta understand a team has a bunch of players, who have their role. Of course a guy who excels at scoring and making tough plays and decisions is incredible and on a level of his own but its a team game, its not for everyone to be the "superstar" but everyone can contribute for success
Can you talk about how roster building has changed over the past few years and how the big 3 era is dying. Teams are starting to more highly value solid rotational guys to go along with their star. Feels like teams are valuing fit and depth a little more than in the 2010s.
The draft around a legend is awesome, but perhaps maxey and wemby should have counted as max players not their rookie salary, so its not easy;p
Austin Reaves! When Lebron and AD were out, he crushed it, and when they play, he does what they don't.
Old Man and the Three backwards hats needs to be a thing.
The disrespect to Lucius Fox and Oracle here is criminal. Batman constantly relies on their skills as well
Love d white getting the respect here 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
Can’t wait for JJ to become a head coach just to move heaven and earth to get Derrick white in his team
I wonder if a team of Alfred’s could win it all
what about jalen suggs 👀
One of his intangibles is being able to hype up the crown and his teammates with his emergy
Counting to 150 million is easy but 9 is a bit tough 😭😂
Tre Jones, Luguentz Dort, Josh Hart, Jalen Green, Amen Thompson, Grayson Allen, Deni Avdija, Isaiah Hartenstein, Naz Reid, Walker Kessler; add Joel Embiid = Championship
The Andre Iguodala award
Would an all Alfred team actually win in the league? Or even better, what teams only had Alfred’s? Those early 2010 hawks teams come to mind
The brooklyn nets... mikal bridges is not batman
Field goal percentage should always be compared to the era's average. Sub 40s was not atrocious back then, if you know how the game was played.
Shout out to the under rated ‘Batman Begins’
Josh hart was guarding pascal siakam for a good portion of this series... He is 6' 4.... six foot fking FOUR!!!!
