Mike always struck me as the type of guy that would give you his last cigarette if you asked. Granted, it would be cheaper brand cigatette. It would be bent, stale, and the package squished and crumbly... But a cigarette non the less. We will miss you.
Mike always struck me as the kind of guy who wasn't keeping track of how many cigarettes he had. Largely, if not entirely, because his brain was fried from heavy use of psychedelics throughout his formative years and spent most of his time since then slightly spaced out and disconnected from reality. So, yes, he'd have given you his last cigarette, but without realising it was his last one.
What you see of Mike in that movie is exactly how he is in real life. I spent a lot of time with him and I took him to parties to the Chicago land area. Such a great dude and I will always miss him
You have to just watch it. No description will do it justice. I think a bunch of people watch it and laugh at Mark and Mike, but I think it's a beautiful representation of the American Dream. It's both sincere and tongue and cheek at the same time.
Man this is one of your absolute best videos! I appreciate the work that went into the B-Roll to expound your points. You captured his friendly, soft-spoken, positive demeanor perfectly. RIP Mike, and great job guys 💚
"He came over and he put a smile on my face"- thats Mike... RIP. He's still putting smiles on many faces i shared American Movie with a lot of my friends, and he'll be makin people smile for a lot longer.
That really sucks. American Movie was a classic, and it helped inspire me to get into movie making, for better or worse. Mike seemed like the kindest guy in the world, the type of guy who would drop whatever they were doing to help if somebody needed it. Hope his family is doing okay.
Mark and Mike left quite an impression on me ever since I saw American Movie in high school in the early 2000s. Sad to hear of Mike's passing. He was a talented musician and a strong soul who tackled Addiction. Sending my condolences to his friends and family. Thanks for the upload.
Love American Movie so much. That line about suckin' down Schnapps and calling Morocco at 2 in the morning slays me -- "Is that what you want to do with your life?" Mike was a helluva great guitarist as well as being a really nice, genuine guy.
I remember walking through Blockbuster and seeing that movie while I was looking for Home Movies (Brendan Small/Loren Bouchard). I always avoided it, as it looked like it would be a depressing watch, but seeing how fond you are of it, and how much of a sweetheart Mike seems to have been, I will check it out. Cancer is a bitch. RIP Mike.
I rented it at Blockbuster because the cover looked funny. Halfway through I realized, though funny at spots, it was overall a really depressing movie. But worth a watch when you have the stomach.
When a man lives as well & does as much good as Mike did it's hard to be sad about his passing. What I am sad about is not being sure if all the people who depended on him are going to be ok. A great memorial. Thanks!
Aweeee rest in peace Mike. You had so many one liners in this movie and it’s so touching to learn how he never relapsed and helped other addicts! I didn’t know the two of them showed up on talk shows and Family Guy episodes! Thanks for the video it put a smile on my face 😄❤.
I knew Mike back in the day. He was part of our group that hung together in school. Unique for sure. Also, he was only 53. Not 56 as has been widely reported. (His wiki also says 56) He was born in March of 1969. A few months before me. He was a good dude. RIP Mike!
@@RedCowArcade Funny story with Mike: One time a bunch of us were sitting in a car on the top floor of the parking structure across the street from MATC on a "smoke" break. They had already torn the McDonald's down and built the parking garage and we'd sit in the car watching the Bradley Center being built. On this day there were 6 of us in the car and several "cigarettes" going around. The whole car was filled with smoke and you couldn't see outside. I opened up my car door to get some air and there was Mike just standing there. I screamed because he scared the shit out of me. "Got room for one more in there?" he asked, so I slid over and he squeezed into the car and another "cigarette" was fired up and passed around. About 40 minutes later I staggered back to class and sat there wishing that I had a big piece of chocolate cake lol!
American movie is one of my favourite films of all time. I've watched it so many times. You get to know each and every one of the people in it. Each time you watch it you notice something different about them. They are all such characters. Especially Mike. There was so much going on with him that you never saw fully but would see little glimpses of with a little comment or a smile... Or a scream. It was such a pleasure to look into a little section of their world. Thankyou Mike for putting a smile on my face. Talkin' your shit.
I don't usually say stuff like this, but he truly seemed like a one a million kind of dude. A beautiful wise soul. Horrible what he had to endure towards the end. I hope he said yes to drugs at some point.
This makes me so sad, but what an awesome tribute to a true American Badass! Mike was The Man, and such a pure soul. He will always bring a smile to my face! I could have listed to him tell his stories for days on end and never been bored. He was the light of hope in American Movie, and his friendship with Mark was a beautiful thing to behold. I wish there were more Mike Schanks in the world! RIP to the original, he is and will always be missed. I wish his family and loved ones all the best ❤ and to Mike, thank you for all the laughs, but especially thanks for the smiles, man. Hope to meet up with you in heaven someday to hear you play some sweet riffs, and we can share a few stories. We never met in this life, but you're a shining example of the kind of person I try to be. Happy. Caring. Loyal. Chill. Keep rockin' on, man 🤘🏼 and keep smiling! 😊
From the way Mark describes Northwestern in American Movie it's almost as if American Movie is exactly what he was trying to make, I wonder if he ever made that connection. He probably did, he's no dummy.
Man i wonderd what happend to this guy, watched the film years ago thinking what a guy deffo whould of had a beer with him! Remember the part at the end were the guys trying to get his uncle to repeat the line " its alright its ok thers somthing to live for cos Jesus told me so" his frustration coz he kept geting it wrong 😅
This is a wonderful eulogy to Mike Shank. What a guy. So sad this news. I first watched American Movie about 10 years ago. It was blown away by it. It just stuck with me. It's so inspiring.
Mike comes across as a sweet and genuine friend. Mark comes across a a selfish and not very intelligent guy who seems to believe he's an amazing film maker. RIP, Mike.
@@RedCowArcade Yeah there’s an article about it. He got a lot of work because of the false sole director credit. It was in fact directed by both Chris and Sarah.
AVGN made the line “if you play Hydlide or do drugs, all you do is lose, lose, lose.” in his review of Hydlide as reference to this movie. I think his viewers were like “Drugs are awesome man” and he responded saying it was a reference to American Movie. AVGN gets the weed high when they smoke.
Weird. Just now seeing this and hearing the bad news. Damn. I always watch this every Thanksgiving. R.I.P. Mike.
American Movie is of the most sincere documentaries I've ever seen.
Finally found someone that loves American Movie as much as I do♥️

I have a DVD of American Movie autographed by Mike and Mark. A prized possession! RIP Mike.

I watch American Movie several times a month. There's something about it, call it "Sad Brilliance".
American Movie is like the Spinal Tap of film making. RIP Mike.

My favorite part from mike was the "Have you tried Surge, its a new product from the coca cola company"
I love the movie because it doesn’t try to be funny nor even entertaining, yet it’s both.
American Movie has got to be in or around my top 10 all time films. It's hilariously funny, yet also poignant, and every single person is memorable.
RIP Mike
Sincerely thank you for turning me on to American movie. My new favorite
Oh man, it’s so good
i literally bought this movie on amazon. i can watch it over and over. RIP Mike
