Huge thanks and excellent work to this video’s editor (aka “Slob”) Zachary McPhink’s @level_reDesign. He had a lot of fun with this one and we are thankful. He has an awesome video on his channel right now where he built an HD version of Toy Story 2 for the N64 in Unreal Engine, go check that out if you’re looking for something to watch. m.ruclips.net/video/86HNVHp9ts4/видео.html
I think you are missing the point of the video. He doesn't think that James sees himself as a failed filmaker, he thinks that James sees himself as a filmaker instead of a youtuber. And that's precisely what he ends up realising he has in common with James, that he is unable to come to terms with the fact that he's not a filmaker, he's just a youtuber.
Yeah, so much this can apply to James too. I don't wanna insult James with the bigotry of low expectations. Like, what is that tripod mount man? You have plenty money and people to ask. I've had make autistic solutions to things but I'm not gonna showcase them. Don't treat James like he's special.
They're intentionally missing the point. These are the chan trolls Olsen was talking about. This whole video is the equivalent of mocking the smart kid in class for knowing what words mean, because if they can pretend everything they are incapable of understanding means nothing, they're not stupid, miserable failures, right?
He 100% does make the claim that James is a failure of a film maker and that bothers him. I don't know how you can sit here and pretend that's not what he's saying. He literally said it.
@Raideortega They make fun of him because he uses big words to make himself and his arguments seem intelligent and well thought out to the average viewer. And then anybody with any semblance of knowledge on the topic sees how his arguments are flawed and point it out. Then they are branded as "trolls" and fools who just can't understand his high IQ arguments. Dude seriously needs to hop off his high horse.
@RedCowArcade I think it's fine to strongly disagree about... media, haha. No big deal. Our Acolyte jousting has definitely run its course though, for sure.
Every year I go back to watch classic AVGN episodes, specifically around Christmas and yes I eat chicken and rice while watching. I NEVER watch the later episodes a second time.
When you find out autistic people are sometimes bothered by other autistic people... James' and Dan's brains work similarly but differently from each other.
I saw lots of hate for April BITD on TCT (though lots of white knights as well like Frankie mentions). It's also interesting how much KF users HATES the TCT subreddit itself though they are both detractor communities
@@ChuckSDeuces he probably did. Dan is on Kiwifarms as well, and boy howdy. He's far from a saint. He's also trying to bait the "feminist" crowd to like him, but they won't because he is a humorless hack.
Guide to RUclips essay: 1. Find something that you don't know anything about 2. Read opinions about it on Reddit. 3. Parrot the Reddit opinions about it as information. 4. Say that anyone who had these opinion are stupid. 5. Say that the thing you knew nothing about is bad and always has been bad. So like it or hate it, you're stupid for caring about something bad. 6. You are now a filmmaker.
@@gamesthatiplay9083 Dan will always attack a Chan or a Subreddit or ANYTHING that resembles a troll community. Man has flashbacks to eight-man trolling him after he attempted to "expose" them. He was in on it with another person. Fuckin creep.
@@gamesthatiplay9083 Because he had to paint TCT as hateful bigots who think James’ evil wife has kept him from attaining the artistic recognition he deserves. Olson must have taken all of those ‘5:40’ memes as literally as possible.
@@notgonnapay also why he had to ignore Red Cow's existence, and it's kind of hilarious how obvious it is that his only source is the sub since it entirely dictates the direction of the video
It just clicked for me that the terminology of "Breadtube" is where we get that "The commune already has a video essayist" joke. I watched Olson's AVGN video and felt that it didn't bring enough new insight to earn its pretension.
Yeah, I felt it was a regression of insight. In his contorting to misstate the complaints TCT has about more recent AVGN /and/ the defenses of those criticisms, he blocked himself off from already tread insight.
Whoever can say this and honestly mean it doesn't know what it's like to have children. If you take being a parent seriously, you've already lost a part of yourself, because you have to sacrifice so much for their well-being. But that doesn't matter because you love them. There's a special bond that supersedes everything else.
Totally agree with your takes here. Saying that new AVGN is essentially the same as it ever was is the tell that this guy has never had any amount of investment in or understanding of Rolfe's content.
I think Dan's video is an insightful condensing of all the Cinemassacre drama. Overall it's excellent. BUT there's two glaring errors: 1) mischaracterising the Truthers as simply ___-phobic whilst using all of their research, is both crummy, and inaccurate. Most are there for the memes, and creeps are routinely removed/banned. Using a post with TWO UPVOTES as "proof" 😒 2) Saying AVGN is the same as it ever was. Holy crap how ignorant and wrong is that. Saying quality hasn't changed just because it's still a nerd using greenscreen and hurling expletives is like saying "Star Wars hasn't changed because it's still in space and has lightsabers". It sounds like a summary from someone who shotgunned a few dozen episodes in a few days. Wildly ignorant statement to end on 😂 Great discussion and stellar editing lads! Zachary lampooning the pretentious film student intro was incredible 10/10
I can't really defend Dan after he claims that even being bored by Wavelength proves that Wavelength is powerful art because it still forced you to emotionally engage. That's like saying if I take a dump on the sidewalk I created art because you engage with disgust and by walking around it you engaged differently in your environment.
I normally really love Dan's work but this video was very sloppy. Very disappointing upload from him. His video on the desperately delusional Metaverse scammers is probably one of my favorite long form video essays because he really did his homework on how their make-believe society worked. But this video had like no research and I was left wondering what the point of any of it was. Like James is stagnating as a filmmaker, great I knew that by just having a general understanding of the timeline. I watched it twice to see if I missed something but it feels like compiled information but not good or new information.
I was also how annoyed by some moments of hypocrisy, like how he pretends like he doesn't know why the 5:40 freakout is funny, then he criticizes the Screenwave editors for leaving in the 5:40 freakout even though they should know how bad it makes James look.
I've been rewatching AVGN lately and idk, AVGN did change, of course it did but i think it has more to do with James' age and our the viewers age in general. In the end there will always be somebody complaining about change.
We ALL know why Dan wanted to attack the Truthers. He's still salty that his "exposé" of a certain board that he PERSONALLY poked the bear of didn't work and backfired. In all of his social justice journey, he hasn't come off witty or hilarious, he's come off pathetic and creepy.
Media literacy is indeed something our society needs to understand and value more. But I think it’s just another word like mindfulness or critical thinking which people use superficially without understanding what it means clearly
"But don't worry, it's wrapped up in an intellectual bow". Dan is just jealous because he sucks and is a hack. All his fellow bakers left him their crumbs because they are too afraid to admit he's a pizza peddler and that they ever asscoiated with him.
Let me copy-paste the comment I wrote on another video about Dan's essay. I think the message behind Dan's video (which is apparently supposed to be "I was supposed to be the next James Gunn but I'm stuck doing RUclips videos!") would work better if he included other Gen X RUclipsrs who got famous early on and then either cashed out or couldn't keep up with the times. The fact that he only focused on AVGN made it more bitter than it was probably intended to be. Also, I find it funny how people (intentionally?) misinterpret 5:40 memes as an attack on James' family.
I think Olson doesnt get that having talent or knowledge of the intellectual side of film-making doesnt mean you have the spark someone like James has. James is no Spielberg and in that respect hes a failure but Olson is seemingly mad that AVGN was ever popular because of James’ technical ineptitude, but the point is James is very good at sketch comedy as a natural talent and charisma (weird thing to use to describe James I know) which Olson will never have. James is a likeable oaf, Olson is a nerd who thinks he deserves to be liked
It’s almost like he is just figuring out the life lesson we all learned in grade school. Hard work trumps just having knowledge of a thing and expecting to revive accolades. No substitute for hard work.
That dope doesn't have even the iota of talent to be the "next James Gunn". Dan has and will always be afraid to "insult" his little buddies who are fickle and will eat their own if needbe.
Those clips of Dan and Lindsey in the “should you go to film school” video made my skin crawl. Really give off the vibe of senior marching band section leader thinking that makes them instructors themselves.
@@riversidepark4107 Lindsay has had some success, but Dan is picking on James because he self-published and Lindsay was lucky enough to get a publisher. She documents how hard it was, and she put the time and energy into it, so kudos to her. I am happy that James got his book out there. Hell yeah. Either or, YOU DO NOT SHAME SOMEONE FOR WRITING A BOOK AND SELF-PUBLISHING. I have bought a good amount of self-published books and enjoy them, either from friends, people online I like and more. I thought it was disgusting what Dan said. He was probably trying to score brownie points from Lindsay. Dan is a fucking worthless, jealous hack.
Despite being politically left leaning, Breadtube has always been filled with the most privileged, pompous, pretentious douchebags. I can't engage with any of political content on RUclips anymore for this exact reason. These people are slimy fakes, out for themselve, and truly make my skin crawl!
Oh, I remember seeing the video and immediately catching a feeling that the guy has body language of a creep. And the lady in the same frame sipping on beer bitching about life doesn't help the look of the thing. Casual evil vibes.
I get Frankie on this, FI guy represents the type of person I’ve been butting heads with ever since I was a teen getting into movies, through all of film school and even nowadays in places like Letterboxd. Funnily enough, the only realm I’ve never had to deal with people like that was working in the industry cause people who love to cloak themselves on academic research and pretentious analysis when it comes to any form of art usually end up not being very creative people at all.
I've liked a few of Dan Olson's videos but this is really when his pseudo-intellectual snob nonesense really overtook video. The breadtube folks really seem to have a point where their style becomes a parody of themselves. I'm curious to see if HBomberGuy will buck that trend after having two huge bangers.
The great irony of Dan's video is that he claims to have empathy for James all while mocking someone that's obviously on the spectrum (he was in special ed all through high school) for his "weird" behavior. I'm not an expert on these issues by any means, but incidents like James making his entire class act out his short film and not understanding how popular Metallica were/are represent a lack of social awareness that he has minimal control over, not some laughable personality flaw. Agree that a lot of the CinemassacreTruth posts are weirdly sanctimonious and unhealthy in their own ways; there's funny stuff on there but also some really ugly and unkind hyperfixation. But it's hilarious to me that most of the people on that sub appear to have a more astute understanding of why James is the way he is than Dan Olson does.
@@HenryNooney Dan is a fucking hack and pseudo-intellectual creep. He added nothing to the discussion and did it in such a mastubatory amd wasteful way that it just came out like he was trying to get back at a community.
It's JUST the autism with James. I *fully* understand him it's just fun to roast him because I understand and have weird ways myself. Funny I came across Dan’s video the other day, thinking it would be another interesting commentary on James along the Red Cow lines of insight. I got 5 minutes in and had to give up due to the pretension, hyper film school editing and his intonation. Glad to see I wasn’t the only one.
It's also a wholly inaccurate take on EVERYTHING. The man believes the TCT is "super evil" because poor widdle Danny boy got out trolled but trolls and distributed CP and got caught. Wah wah. He also picked on James for being autistic.
Ok this is a fantastic clip. Big round of applause for the editor. I don't know why but I was getting slight Dr Phil vibes off Frankie when he said "and that's when James Rolfe tapped lights to the ceiling"
Okay the beef with Lindsay over Doug was to do with “Kickassia,” a movie being shot in the desert that involved many physically taxing action sequences and running. The craft services she was annoyed by were the lack of water, because Doug and the producers initially didn’t provide any to the cast during the shoot.
I don't know that anyone who takes so many ad hominem shots at Doug should be the one to sermonise about the ills and supposed personal attacks of The Cinemassacre Truth.
Agreed. Dan should look in the mirror. He's attacking Truthers because he lost a war against his own trolls some time ago. He holds them all accountable.
What ad hominem attacks? I’d have to rewatch a long video by a bald man critiquing another long video by another bald man which I don’t particularly feel like doing, but I don’t remember the The Wall critique critique video straying outside of attacking TNC’s ideas and analysis. Saying someone’s analysis is terrible, saying their argument/viewpoint was badly created and presented is textbook NOT ad hominem, even if it hurts someone’s feelings. It WOULD be ad hominem if he had said the ideas were bad because Doug is bald or smelly or likes to hit strays with his car, since those have no bearing on his ideas. But simply attacking the analysis someone presents is literally not ad hominem, even if done in a rude way. But also, to be clear, “ad hominem” is a specific term used for a specific sport, and probably shouldn’t be generally applied or used as a standard for real-world communication not within the confines of a formal debate. Formal debate rules CAN be helpful guidelines in general arguments, but there are other factors to consider.
@pantslesswrock I really do appreciate you clarifying/defining ad hominem so well; I think I have probably misused it in this case and I'm happy to be corrected but in saying that, isn't a statement like "Doug is a fundamentally incurious person" a bit of one? Is there another term we could use? I mean that's an opinion he's discerning through consuming his work but ultimately that is a personal judgement of Doug's character, right? Regardless, thank you for your insightful comment.
@@muttley3050 You are welcome! I am truly happy to have helped shed some light. I think you being up an excellent point that highlights the flaw in any binary view of thinking/evaluating the thoughts of others. There are absolutely going to be assessments you can make of someone that do attack the thoughts/ideas directly, but also cause “splash damage” if you will and definitely imply a denigration of someone’s *character*, and not just the ideas they are presenting. Curiosity is a really tricky one to diagnose! I am reminded of George W Bush, who was labeled by many liberals (and others) as “stupid”, but an expert on human intelligence famously said “He’s NOT stupid. He is intellectually uncurious.” So what’s being implied there was that W did not have a deficiency in his brain or his abilities, but was instead choosing, consciously or not, to not fully exercise the mental faculties he was given. Being uncurious means you are accepting the world as it is first presented, it means you do not put in work to dig and find the truth, you cede that work almost entirely to whatever you see as a source of authority. I would say that in that case, calling Bush “stupid” would be an ad hominem, because that blanket discounts any thoughts or ideas he presents before you even hear them, while “intellectually uncurious” gives you instead a reason behind the shallowness of the ideas being represented. If your reaction is that that is a pretty small and fine distinction, I would agree with you. Also, people leading countries with nuclear arsenals inherently deserve more scrutiny. In the case of a guy who kind of makes critiques but honestly is more skilled, comfortable, and successful at using the trappings of analysis as a starting point for entertainment (a worthy endeavor in its own right), I think the line is way blurrier. I would personally say that the curiosity criticism of Nostalgia Critic is fair but rudely stated and doesn’t read as ad hominem to me, especially since curiosity, wanting to dig deeper, is basically a prerequisite for performing critical analysis. BUT, it’s that “fundamentally” that does stick out to me. If he had said “is a fundamentally uncurious critic, which basically means he’s a bad critic”, I think that would be absolutely fair and not ad hominem. But the conjunction of “fundamentally” and “person” does imply that we are moving beyond the scope of just talking about an approach to art. A fair thing to level at someone trying to wage wars and run an economy, I would agree a way less fair thing to level at someone who really just adopts the character of a critic and mainly wants to make short movies about Santa Christ. Though on the other hand, I think part of the problem is that Doug himself forgot the critic part is a character. I hope this helped and came across as informative and not rude!
@@muttley3050 'I mean that's an opinion he's discerning through consuming his work' I kind of suspect it's also a opinion he discerned through working for the man for a extended period and watching his friends get screwed by his bad habits as a boss given their history with channel awesome :v

I think the biggest thing to take away from r/TheCinemassacreTruth is that "a few bad apples ruins the bunch." That seems to be the theme over there. Lots of people shitposting and genuinely wanting better for James, and the few people making edgy jokes that go a little too far. That place really feels like you spend some time there, laugh a bit, then move on with your life.
Brown Electrons is, by far, my favorite detractor on RUclips. I don’t hate James and don’t think I ever will, I still think he’s got more to show the world…he just got caught up in the success of this one character. The show is not what it’s always been. The Karate Kid video is still better than much of AVGN’s recent output. Even the little stuff, like the scene where James recreates the Coven kitchen scene, has been lost in the shuffle.
The dude gave me that "I know it all and I'm absolute" college professor vibe, and at the end, he came to the same conclusion that 99% of people did *James has a family... James lost interest to some extent but the character is what puts food on the table* but "since he is so smart... his conclusion is unique"
Dan Olson is an idiot at the end of the day. Couldn't pronounce names correctly, purposefully used the worst examples of a Reddit board to get all butthurt about, and ultimately stole everyone's opinion. What a dope.
Replace smart with popular and I think you have the man on the rights frustrations with the video. I personally hadn't considered that the things dan was saying where unique, I saw it as his attempt at connecting to something he saw himself in and responding with A video declaring his interest in holding onto the pretentious view of himself as A film maker in spite of his medium being youtube. Perhaps his comparisons were misplaced, I got the impression from this video and its comments that his assertion that james sees himself as A failed filmmaker, is not true. This changes A lot of the perspective presented because dan based his connection with james on his own desire not to loose to the incentives pulling towards just making content instead. At least thats how I read it. Perhaps Dan feels differently.
Last year, folks at work started suddenly using the word 'bespoke' everywhere. I'm further enough in my career that i just started calling people out and asking them to elaborate on what they meant out of pettiness.
"to which," "ish," "nice," "yikes," and "as am I" also come to mind over the years as being trendy and gaining a lot of traction everywhere, then poof. Gone from vernacular.
Yikes, seems like we share similar-ish takes on trendy verbiage. I can tell you're annoyed with it, as am I. It's nice to know I'm not alone in this, to which I say "Thanks."
My favorite part of Dan's video is where he says the audience doesn't really know James Rolfe because we're watching him on a computer screen (really very insightful stuff!) but then when he recreates that wooden camera rig, with a straight face says *he* feels a deep connection to ole Bimmy. Easily the funniest bespoke juxtaposition of discordant ideas I've seen in quite a while.
Yes, that's the point. Dedicating time to something makes you project yourself on it and then get mad when it isn't the thing you made it up to be. That's what the video is about.
as quick as he is to dismiss the subreddit as just haters, his video mostly just rehashes regular thoughts, ideas, and discussion of the cinemassacretruth. but no fun allowed! he is not so different from an average truther, just as overly fascinated with cinemassacre's idiosyncracies, only a lot more self serious.
That clip is legitimately uncomfortable to watch. Remember in like junior high school, when you were awkward and nervous that other people would be able to tell you had a crush on your friend? Dan is exactly what we were worried we'd look like.
Another pretentious midwit watermark is the unnecessary use of obscure words like "precarious", "bespoke", "cankerous" etc. Yuck. I've noticed you never hear bonafide smart people talk like that, because they tend to find simple ways to convey even very complex meanings.
Olson’s take on the AVGN episode quality is the equivalent to the Cadbury Creme Egg ad: “They haven’t gotten smaller. You’ve just gotten bigger.” (Of course we’re not making them smaller to cut costs and increase revenue.)
It's clear that he isn't a fan, because James' content is too low-brow for him. This is why he can't tell the difference between modern AVGN and the golden era. "He still shouts profanities, so it's the same bigots! It's you who changed!"
That tactic of poisoning the well (starting a video essay with a non-sequitur that frames how you want your audience to think about the real thing you're reviewing) is so slimy when it's done sincerely, but I think it has the potential to be really funny if it were obviously tongue-in-cheek. If I ever do a video essay about something frivolous, I'm definitely starting it with a summary of the Armenian genocide or something.
@@estradoll It's a pretentious act of false equivalence. It makes the musical, and by extension the video essay about the musical, seem more important than it is. As hiliarious as James behind the scenes video is and for all the tripods wired upside down to the ceiling and genuinely insane telepromter setups, the only thing that really matters is what ends up on screen. I learned that same lesson watching American Movie. We laugh with these buffoons as much as we laugh at them. We relate. I havent watched this guys video, but judging from the clips youve shown. He seems completely incabable of relating to or laughing WITH James. You can hear malice and misery in his voice. This guy is a walking Seasonal Affective Dissorder. I'm rambling.
Dan IS JUST THAT. Dan can't relate because he didn't care to. Thinks he is "above" that. Yeah, he sure has a lot of malice towards Truthers for sure. He hates all trolls, because they bested him.
The point of using large words is to summarize things with fewer words. “Brevity is the soul of wit” This guy thinks chaining them together will trigger intellect multiplier points.
Can we all just collectively agree that James is a little on the spectrum but is high functioning enough he didn’t get any help with it as a kid? Idk didn’t read the book.
He is 100% autistic. He has the formerly named Asperger's syndrome...which is basically high-functioning autism. My ex had just that, and the similarities are uncanny.

I remember being near the end of graduate school almost ten years ago and needing to talk to a large group of interested college students about what that particular major's graduate school is like, fielding questions, etc. I remember being so careful not to sound like Dan and Lindsay because I was apparently a lot more self-aware and understood that the point was to provide an accurate idea of what the experience was like, not to provide some sort of emotional validation for myself. What I've learned as a professional for nearly ten years since is that professional people who are secure don't talk like that at all. They tend to understate the pressure of their endeavors, not overstate them.
I don't comment often on youtube, I just wanted to thank you though for acknowledging Olson's hypocrisy and uncalled mean-spiritedness towards Doug Walker. Though I don't have a problem with someone critizing his work, I feel like those remarks really went overboard and the only reason they seem to be accepted by his fanbase is because Doug's reputation is in the toilet right now. So thank you for being the first youtubers to publicly acknowledge this (that I know of).
I watched the Folding Ideas video the day it premiered. My first impression was, This guy knows a lot and nothing about James at the same time... I guess the video title "I Don't Know James Rolfe" is kinda true.
His thesis point seems to be James isn't worth hating. Fair enough, but that's coming from a guy who's made hating Doug Walker his passion project. He oozes hypocrisy.
I mean, of course Dan wouldn't because he plagerised everyone else who had discourse on James. He wants to stab himself, cry about it and people take pity. He's not ready to point the gun at himself just yet.

I got now confirmation that he did do it, but no reason to assume he did it more than once. So, "used to" may be an incorrect way to put it. But well, he did do it, and he did it as I asked and for the reason I asked: he shared the material in order to prove that such material was being shared.

@@jacklee8467 I'd be curious to see a conversation between the two. He'd keep telling James film titles, and saying, "You probably haven't heard of it " lol
This Folding Ideas guy is insufferable. He is so flippant when he mocks other real directors movies. He made movies snickering about Michael Bay, Zack Snyder and even Ang Lee. I'm not saying you can't criticize movies if you don't make them yourself. It's the smirky I'm better than you attitude he has that's cringy too me. He was just mocking everything about James Rolfe in such a petty way. As if he was sooo much more accomplished and that he pitied him. James would never do this to someone else. This guy should be "dunked on" so to speak for this.
Dan deserves it, I concur. Ask about 8chan! Also, Dan is jealous. His lil "friends" that dumped him are doing really well, and he is low-key mad about it.
I bet Dan Olsen’s main squeeze describes his lovemaking as bespokely inefficient. My most frustrating part ofJames is that he fights against learning how to pronounce words properly or have a grade 5 understanding of how loan words work.
The breadtubers do get up their own butt because they really do think they're "artists" and believe there's a certain arrogance that comes with being an "artist" like no successful artist is ever humble or agreeable. Which falls flat when you're clearly not invested in the material that you're critiquing.
Sorry to be one of those long diatribe comments you mentioned, but it was very cathartic and entertaining to hear your thoughts on this. The part that annoys me with the Lady Emily and Folding Ideas videos, and others similar is that they seem to ignore or choose to not see the real complaints of James and Cinemassacre. Or they will raise a fair point and brush it off as if you're never allowed to critique specific RUclipsrs for some reason. For Lady Emily, she acted like people are mad that he's getting help, when to me the real issue was James not announcing his major restructuring and sticking with bad help. The snowball effect of bad help culminates in the plagiarism scandal, and I'm shocked at how easily some of these essays hand-wave that away. That was a massive problem to have James' other flagship series fall to that point, and many sadly brush it off like nothing bad had happened. Should they be crucified for it? Nah, but I actually like how hbomberguy articulated that it shows the trash mill that the channel had become by that point. For Dan, it bugs me that he sees all of the TCT memes as pure hatred and phobics. Yes, there's some legit jerks over there, I've seen many comments calling James mentally disabled, comparing April to Yoko Ono, comments counting down the days to Justin's heart attack, etc. But to act like that is all that exists is just wrong. If you sort that subreddit by the top posts, you see some funny high effort memes, and some really fair points of the channel faltering. To butcher a comment I saw from someone else; 5:40 isn't a meme because James had other commitments, it's a meme because of the sheer terror that suddenly befalls James. It all goes back to your original video, the original detractors are most likely fans poking fun, nobody with common sense is in there to draw blood. As annoying as it was, I laughed every time a GIF of Cooper humping a table was spammed, I was there to laugh. James' duck stomp during a Rex Viper concert is hilarious, and it came from him having a fun time, I enjoy seeing that, it's just entertaining. Anyway, I always echo a lot of your guys' opinions that we're not on this Earth to hate James, but he's not immune to criticism and he hasn't managed his brand very well. Many of these videos want to put him on the "leave James alone" pedestal with tears in their eyes, but that's not fair. If I were Doug I would also be pissed, but good on him for not whining about any hatred he gets.
I read your diatribe of a comment, and I think you nailed it on the head. We're here to critique something we love! Some funny memes may come from that. That doesn't mean, according to Dan, that we are all hate-mongers and just don't understand. Oh thank you Dan! For your exhilarating insight on James and TCT and for enlightening we peons with this knowledge!
"Pretentious" is definitely A word, but is it THE word? It can be easy for a reactionary, unthinking RUclips commentor to post a single word rebuttal without actually having conducted a deconstruction of the core media in question. After all, a culture that doesn't wear wristwatches would consider garnishing the arm with a timepiece pretentious. Indeed, if we dissect capitalism's obsession with monetizing the passage of arbitrary measures of the Earth's rotation it becomes clear those culture may in fact have a more sophisticated comprehension of mortality than Euro-traditional institutions. Until we dislodge prejudice against diagnosis we aren't having a discussion about the true nature of the subject.
@@TedDiabetes um, proof? I’ve been on that subreddit and it’s nothing but stupid memes and lamenting over the lack of good AVGN videos. Most of the people there seem to want James to be happy, even if that means quitting. It’s funny how Dan Olson didn’t have much to say about Justin’s racist videos and his association with a chomo. I guess that’s because it would’ve went against his narrative that TCT is a hive of hateful bigots.
I think the video in question is great, and i also think the opinions touched on here were needed. I've been waiting to hear you guys talk about this. I just dont understand why the comment section here is so crass and rude? Guess i expected too much from a comment section.
I’m surprised that these guys seem to say that comment sections are good when they’re curated and that the haters don’t represent the overall idea, but then they allow a bunch of hater comments that don’t provide any substance. Lots of ableism, some transphobia even.
wowowow, I was waiting for this one and I'm REALLY surprised by your take, in a good way! I was sure you would just be praising the cinematography and "dedication to the art form" or whatever, but instead you actually trashed those pretentious things that always annoyed me in video essays that I couldn't find the terminology for, so it's very validating to hear that (at least in Frankie's world) it's okay to not like those "film-school"-y techniques! (that your editor masterfully parodied, good job btw) as for the source video, it was kinda on par with hbomberguy's thing in terms of production, but "the message" wasn't as clear to me until you spelled it out, about projection and stuff.. so overall very good companion piece!
I posted a comment on the original Folding Ideas video but I’ll say it here too. The analysis just felt so mean spirited. All the irony and self-reflective elements landed for me as purely pretentious and a way to deflect any real criticism. But I just left feeling like…why does this need to exist? Who asked you to put James on blast to a million subscribers who you know are going to eat it up. And like you said, he clearly is coming 1) not as a fan and 2) when it’s “safe” to do so, which just adds to the shittiness of it all.
I've heard rumblings that April was a "controlling wife" ever since she just cohosted a music podcast with James (underrated) and posted cupcake recipes on his website. I didn't get it.
The truth about James... he was great when he started out. Then he continued to do his stuff. And after fifteen years, like anything that has been going on for that amount of time, it started to get stale. And we went on with our lives, finding new things to entertain us along the way. Such is the way of life.
The amount of effort that went into this clip is nuts! Well done to whichever “slob” handled the project! EDIT: forgot to check the description. Phenomenal work, @Level_reDesign
I thought Dan's video leaned heavily into spoken word tropes and he took on a Spalding Gray inspired persona of over-intellectualizing and assessing over his subject, seeing James as having achieved things Dan was never able to. In Dan's video, he's Saliere to James's Mozart. James' lack of skill and complete lack of artistic evolution throughout his time making videos haunts Dan. I think Dan uses pretension here to mock himself as much as he does James. Dan never achieved the renown and relevance of James, which he acknowledges in the video. I think you guys misinterpreted Dan's message.
@@RedCowArcade as someone who has watched all of Dan's content over the years (and enjoyed the vast majority of it), i felt like he was being far more performative in this video and it was coming from a place where he was acknowledging his obsession with James to the point of parody. His obsession with the set up. Building the miniatures. Trying to recreate the same strange camera set up James had. To me it felt like Dan acknowledging that in spite of all James' technical & creative failings, he still created an audience and cultural relevance that Dan was never capable of achieving. Some of the choices Dan made felt (to me anyway) intentionally satirical. He was making fun of himself and his perceived image as much as he was criticizing James. As if to say 'how did someone this basic become so successful (and i didn't)'? There's a moment in the video where Dan is reading from James' book, and he laments how James doesn't see AVGN as a THE thing defines him but just a facet of a half dozen other things that no one cares about. James has achieved a status that precious few creators can claim, and yet James believes its merely a fragment of his identity. Dan recoils at that concept, because James sees himself as a filmmaker first, even though he has clearly shown over the course of his career how not-great he is at the basic fundamentals of filmmaking. Which is why Dan always comes back to the camera set up. Its a metaphor for someone doing things the wrong way, and yet somehow they're still able to achieve a level of success that 99% of the content creators will never know. That's why (IMO) I think the prententiousness in the video is parody. It's why Dan goes so over the top in his set ups. He's saying 'look at how much I know about film' as a way of showing his own pettiness and resentment of James. I think all great art is personal, and what I took away from this is Dan looking at a peer who has achieved great success in spite of his shortcoming but using it as a mirror to his own failings. This isn't Dan declaring "I'm better than you", this is Dan declaring "God is laughing at me". He made a creative & technically proficient stylized video about someone who has never excelled in these areas, despite fancying himself as a filmmaker. I think there's a stench of jealously & pettiness all over the video and I think that was intentional. So while I understand anyone thinking Dan is pretentious in videos, I do think there's a lot more theater in this video and layers of self-awareness about his pretentiousness.
@anghush you are 100% correct about this. This video is less about James Rolfe and more a self-reflection by Dan Olson about how he feels similar to what he thinks he knows about Rolfe.
@@RedCowArcade yes, absolutely! It was 100% intended as self parody. The whole point of his projection metaphor is that he's doing all this criticism to Rolfe, criticism that seems a bit awkward and pretentious and doesn't really hit the nail on the head, but that's because deep down inside, he knows it's self-criticism. Which comes around full circle at the end, where he does the literal self-projection and shows that even when he tries to beat Rolfe at his own game with his best film school educated videography and editing - it's not even as good as the guy he's criticizing for being subpar. He thought he was above it all, that he knew what Rolfe was about, that he could understand his art and his life just by dissecting his media, but really, he doesn't know Rolfe at all. I think it's a really well-executed metaphor, even though I don't nearly like this Olson video as much as his other work.
Dan is a proud self proclaimed SJW who is anti "punching down". He clearly sees himself as superior to James. He probably feels he has license to do this because of James issues with the 2016 Ghostbusters.
You see these type of guys so easily, because they are all the same and SO easy to point out because of that. It's like they follow the same play-book on how to be a pretentious yuppie living in luxury, while pretending to be oppressed. James does some silly things, but you know what? He is a REAL person. He is who he is and I'd rather be in his presence than Dan, whom I imagine is just constantly looking down on the people around him.
Dan is far from a saint. He had to "punch down" both James and Doug to attempt to hide some henoius stuff he has done. It's sick because at the same time he is making fun of James for being autistic. What a loser.
I went into that video, thru my algorithm/suggested videos, not knowing that guy or ever hearing about the video. I watched like 45 mins of it. It sucked. Pretentiousness galore. I just kept thinking, "You *love* the sound of your own voice WE GET IT". Brevity is that dude's kryptonite.
decent discussion, funny editing, enjoyed it. i do find it interesting that you admit the fatphobic comments from TCT but then try to minimize away the rest by saying, well NOW they won't get upvoted and the mods would take care of it and leave his wife out of it. seems clear that was not always the attitude, especially during the rental review or AVGN movie times, and that "fatphobia" is central to the "truther identity" its why you call editors slobs, even endearingly
Indie film maker bore plagiarises content and repackages it in the most hysterically pretentious way possible, whilst also simultaneously sucking out all the humour in the process.
I have a problem for years about a person that literally describes himself as a person who does "video essay". These type of videos, in summary, they tend to be more about good appearance regarding the audiovisual, to sound very intelligent, however the actual content tends to be not very effective, in general, to say the least... Most of those "video essays" I forget every thing about what was said almost immediately after I saw it, and I only remember the presentation of the audio and visual, but the message, I forget almost everything about the message. And not to say that I think this is a format that can't be used well, for example we have here on RUclips the classic channel Every Frame a Painting by Thony Zhou, and I think this is a great channel that uses well the concept of "video essay"...
He also probably shat on doug walker so confidently because he worked under him for a while, alongside lindsay, and my impression was that doug wasn't giving him room to do what he wanted, so the video on the wall probably felt like a good opportunity to vent, especially given how he also saw and i think was somewhat involved with what happened that caused the scandals on twitter way back then that got doug canceled and his employees leave his company. He probably had some unresolved anger that he needed to vent. Dude even apologizes for saying the mean things he'll say, then just unloads his grievances. As stated in my previous comment, dan's arrogant, he dislikes the idea that people won't dare to think as much as he does about stuff.
If Dan Olsen has a pretentious hate boner with guys like doug Walker and James Rofle..... I wonder what his honest feelings about somebody like the Cinema Snob!!!
olson and his ilk’s niche is essentially what i would call “intellectual gooning”, where the point is to self-congratulate yourself for creating or watching smart content (by youtube standards) to the point you reach a state of orgasmic euphoria. But the thing is that like Olson’s video comes off as especially bitter and hypocritical because unlike his Doug Walker vid which was nakedly about how much he doesnt like Doug this video is trying to have its cake and eat it too. “Oh im not a bad person for spending months e-stalking this guy i dont know to make an hour long video calling him bad and talentless, because im doing it in good faith.” That dopey subreddit has its problems but it doesnt claim a pox on both your houses, it’s just there to make fun of James for his eccentricities and bad content. Olson’s one of those guys who would frequent Cinemassacre Truth to make long posts analyzing how bad the content is and then comment about how people should stop saying “no time” because “it makes us look immature, do what i do instead and call him a bad person because he cant do good aspect ratios” I hope this video he did is sort of the finale of breadtube as a whole, because it really is one of the first times a breadtuber has done their whole documentary style on someone who legitimately isnt a bad person and thus doesnt deserve it. It comes across so weird to a normal person, like “wait you did an hour long video psychoanalyzing a family man who did funny sketch videos and then got lazy?” And like i know im no better, and your content is kinda similar but idk i think an off the cuff amusement or analysis is a lot less weird than what he did Speaking of Doug tho I wonder what Olson’s reaction was to the Smiling Friends cameo with Daniel the Demon Slayer. I know some old CA alumini got “not mad but yea i am mad” at it, even moviebob did
Doug won at the end of the day by taking the high road. Of course all of his old peers are spittin and cussin because they probably HATE Smiling Friends and the humor of Zach Hadel and all of the Oney Plays crew, but they probably wanted to be there too.
I dont now bois. Calling someone pretentious because he put in a lot of effort into a video essay and uses "big words" seems a bit shallow. You put up a facade of not caring about anything while also not really engaging with the substance and main arguments of Dan's work. As an outside observer, it seems as if at least one of you was somewhat slighted by the critique of James Roolf-haters, and didn't think much beyond that. What Dan tried to do was to pull back and put all that criticism of James into a wider context and view it from 'orbit' - not just to "bash" on James. You (or at least one of you) seemed to not be able to do that because you were offended by the criticism of your own community. Why not take it as an opportunity to look inwards? I don't know, this whole video made me profoundly sad. Also, the constant bashing on Lindsay Ellis for the smallest of things seemed so wierd and not relevant. Gave off a vibe of talking trash in the school yard about someone you really have no reason for hating beyond in-group loyalty.
Huge thanks and excellent work to this video’s editor (aka “Slob”) Zachary McPhink’s @level_reDesign. He had a lot of fun with this one and we are thankful.
@@Raideortega I can’t tell if this is satire or not
He 100% does make the claim that James is a failure of a film maker and that bothers him.

"i think children and family are the most important things in the world, but i don't think they're reasons to lose yourself"
Beautiful, Frankie
Whoever can say this and honestly mean it doesn't know what it's like to have children. If you take being a parent seriously, you've already lost a part of yourself, because you have to sacrifice so much for their well-being. But that doesn't matter because you love them. There's a special bond that supersedes everything else.
Losing yourself =\= burying yourself.
That is the main difference.
Totally agree with your takes here. Saying that new AVGN is essentially the same as it ever was is the tell that this guy has never had any amount of investment in or understanding of Rolfe's content.
Dan is trying to make himself relevant and cool. He never was.
I think Dan's video is an insightful condensing of all the Cinemassacre drama. Overall it's excellent. BUT there's two glaring errors:
1) mischaracterising the Truthers as simply ___-phobic whilst using all of their research, is both crummy, and inaccurate. Most are there for the memes, and creeps are routinely removed/banned. Using a post with TWO UPVOTES as "proof" 😒
2) Saying AVGN is the same as it ever was. Wildly ignorant statement to end on 😂
Great discussion and stellar editing lads!

@@maydaymemer4660 What? A Breadtuber thinking he deserves what other people have? Imagine my shock.

I didn't like this video, but then it opened with a tape recording instead of normal audio, and a video of a video of a video. It's a great video now
Okay the beef with Lindsay over Doug was to do with “Kickassia,” a movie being shot in the desert that involved many physically taxing action sequences and running.

😂
"to which," "ish," "nice," "yikes," and "as am I" also come to mind over the years as being trendy and gaining a lot of traction everywhere, then poof. Gone from vernacular.
Yikes, seems like we share similar-ish takes on trendy verbiage. I can tell you're annoyed with it, as am I. It's nice to know I'm not alone in this, to which I say "Thanks."
I remember a few years ago these people all suddenly started saying "full-throated" all the time.
The one I hate the most is people who say "agnostic" when they mean "neutral." I think that started with techbros and business majors imitating them.

Why is it slimy to talk about the AIDS crisis when making a review about RENT?
@@estradoll It's a pretentious act of false equivalence. It makes the musical, and by extension the video essay about the musical, seem more important than it is. @@TheWolverineDoll So your literal argument is that RENT isn't about AIDS?
@@estradoll It isn't the same thing as AIDS.

So the pretentiousness was a self parody?
Where the hell did my comment go? This is bespoke
"comedy should never punch down" MFs when they see someone they perceive as intellectually or culturally beneath them ✊👊💥
In Dan's playbook, it's A-OK to make fun of someone who is on the spectrum if you carefully avoid mentioning it. What a hypocrite.
@@BSzili so the internet?
I went into that video, thru my algorithm/suggested videos, not knowing that guy or ever hearing about the video. I watched like 45 mins of it. It sucked. Pretentiousness galore. I just kept thinking, "You *love* the sound of your own voice WE GET IT". Brevity is that dude's kryptonite.
28:53 after the mobile horse game episode, i think we can all agree it has declined lol
decent discussion, funny editing, enjoyed it. i do find it interesting that you admit the fatphobic comments from TCT but then try to minimize away the rest by saying, well NOW they won't get upvoted and the mods would take care of it and leave his wife out of it. seems clear that was not always the attitude, especially during the rental review or AVGN movie times, and that "fatphobia" is central to the "truther identity" its why you call editors slobs, even endearingly
Indie film maker bore plagiarises content and repackages it in the most hysterically pretentious way possible, whilst also simultaneously sucking out all the humour in the process.
pretty much.
I laughed when he said 5:40
I have a problem for years about a person that literally describes himself as a person who does "video essay".
I LOVE Every Frame a Painting. And I love you Richard! Bless you brother.
@@RedCowArcade I LOVE you too, Frankie! God bless you and your family and friends!!!
No

I watched that 90 minute video. The vibe I got from it was "don't laugh at this James Rolfe guy, just try to understand him."
Why not both? I'm autistic, and I had to learn to laugh at myself.
Go bespoke, go broke
Olson’s one of those guys who would frequent Cinemassacre Truth to make long posts analyzing how bad the content is and then comment about how people should stop saying “no time” because “it makes us look immature, do what i do instead and call him a bad person because he cant do good aspect ratios”
I hope this video he did is sort of the finale of breadtube as a whole, because it really is one of the first times a breadtuber has done their whole documentary style on someone who legitimately isnt a bad person and thus doesnt deserve it. It comes across so weird to a normal person, like “wait you did an hour long video psychoanalyzing a family man who did funny sketch videos and then got lazy?” And like i know im no better, and your content is kinda similar but idk i think an off the cuff amusement or analysis is a lot less weird than what he did
Speaking of Doug tho I wonder what Olson’s reaction was to the Smiling Friends cameo with Daniel the Demon Slayer.
Kinda surprised "gooning" makes its way through the YT filter.
He probably thinks its fascist since charlie said he loves his country
@@beiwubsnsod7378 LOL YES
That opening encapsulates everything "two popular RUclipsrs both did some dumb shit and le Canadian smart man had to step in"
I dont now bois.
