The Titanic Plum Porter is an absolute classic beer Simon, especially on draught. Rich, full bodied with a wonderful plum fruitiness. Blows St Peter’s away.
The limited edition grand reserve, and the cherry porter are great too. The cherry porter is pretty much what Kriek would be if it had originated in Britain instead of Belgium. I do adore Belgian beers though...
Nice. I picked up a Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter for this rainy California evening. I picked it up learning recently that the bottled on date is no easily discernible so I picked up one brewed in May 2024.
I met my friend from Ireland in Wetherspoons in London and before he arrived I bought a Guinness for him and a Erdinger Weissbier for myself.. When he arrived he said he had spent a lot of time in Germany and could he drink the Erdinger and me drink the Guinness. Next order was 2 Erdinger Weissbier 😂😂😂
Mr. Webb, Just an FYI cooincidence for ya, I live in Wisconsin and there is a local chain of diners in the Milwaukee area called George Webb’s. Great burgers and Chili, anyway I Saw your name and thought you might wanna know your famous locally! Haha. So if you ever come here go to one of them and show ‘em your ID you might get a free meal! 😜👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 cheers!
I recently purchased Mackeson Stout in Home Bargains. I have not seen this beer for years. I think they used to give this to people recovering from illness.
My wife who is normally teetotal drank a few Mackesons when she was pregnant with our two kids. It's much weaker than it used to be though. It's only 2.8 now.
I've watched a lot of your vids recently. Love your approach to beer and tasting. This has been my favourite so far ('cos I love a Porter). Many thanks.
The name Old Peculier pays tribute to the unique ecclesiastical status of Masham as a ‘Court of the Peculier’ In the middle of the 12th Century, Roger de Mowbray, the Lord of the Manor, granted the market town of Masham, St Mary’s Church and some of the surrounding lands to York Minster. Masham and its lands were richly endowed and had a large income from sheep and their wool. It became known as “The Golden Prebend of York” and a number of future bishops, cardinals and a future Archbishop of Canterbury previously held posts at Masham. At the time of the donation of Masham to York Minster, the Archbishop of York decided that the journey to Masham to oversee the towns affairs was too far, so the town was designated “A Peculier”. This meant that Masham as a Peculier Borough had its own ecclesiastical court and governed its own affairs on behalf of York Minster.
Written from the outset - before I've watched. Old Peculier used to be amazing... truly the pride of British brewing. One of my favourite memories of visiting the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors a few years back is supping on a pint or two in the Dolphin, Robin Hood's Bay (with single malt chaser, natch). Unfortunately, it's so utterly pumped with glucose syrup/hop extract/what on earth ever now that it's about as enjoyable as a pint of Coors Lite.
I tried the Krombacher Pils, Warsteiner and Champigneulles beers that you recommended and really enjoyed them all, so thanks for reviewing them. 👍🏻 I found that I enjoyed the Champigneulles the most but that extra .5% in strength can really be felt the next morning after a session. I really like the Krombacher as well, it has an almost sherbet like tingly freshness to it. I'd say it's neck and neck between these 2 beers. I really enjoy the clean, pure freshness that they have on the palate. Your notes on the Warsteiner were also spot on. A decent brew but I'll put it in second place for now. Tonight I'm on the ales though, I've got Old Crafty Hen and Golden Pride on the menu. Take care mate and cheers! 👍🏻😉
We have Anspach & Hobday London Black on draught at our local -- absolutely delicious. Creamy and chocolatey with notes of coffee and lots of body. Don't know what the cans are like, but would love to see it more widely distributed if they can maintain the quality.
@@Jut123 Because Guinness is sold as cheap a mass produced stout with the purpose of selling a lot of untis. The West Indies porter would cost more to produce and be taxed higher due to having a higher ABV and thus would have a higher retail price and wouldn't appeal to the hordes that currently drink Guinness who drink it because it's cheap and have never drunk a decent stout.
From my POV these are all so exotic, because I live in germany. The only one I can get is the Guinness. So this was super interesting. I am drinking a König Ludwig Dunkel (king Ludwig dark) while viewing.
Fullers Black Cab is worth a mention Old Pec. is a thing all on it's own. I have nothing but love for Aldi Coffee Stout, and bottled Guinness is so different to draught. The Irish reckon you're areal Guinness drinker if you like a bottle of shelf Guinness rather than fridge Guinness.
Funny how Llanelli is well known for it's tinplate works and their beer tastes of it. Felinfoel Brewery has been nicknamed 'Feeling foul' for over 40 years and I see why. 😁
Lol you and I have a similar palate; I went to school in Llanelli and Milford Haven, have travelled the world and tried the beers: no surprise that the London stout is the best, for me the Yorkshire brewers never disappoint, Felinfoel have never produced anything drinkable (double dragon is drain cleaner) and the west country have never understood what porter or stout means. I'm in South Lincolnshire now and the local brewery is Batemans in Wainfleet who knock out decent ales but alas not a decent porter/stout. Had three pints of Salcombe stout in spoons yesterday, passable but not great. Totally agree that bottled Guinness is pish and to be avoided. By the way, in times of yore mild beer was the contents of the slop trays (which is why it's cheaper).
I do like the badgers stout always buy 4 bottles when in Morrisons but will have to try the black sheep and fullers pride and the Welsh cake stout thanks Simon great video.
Just watched first ten minutes so far. Noticed that the Guinness and London Porter that have light coming through at the bottom are also the 2 beers in the narrowest glasses...The Black Sheep beer glass is like a Budvar glass
What a wonderful selection of beers! Had that Welsh Cake stout for the first time a couple of months ago when visiting my daughter at uni in Aber, it was delicious. Guinness Original Extra Stout is so much nicer than Guinness draught.
The Glamorgan Brewery Welsh cake stout really is dreadful. I made the schoolboy error of buying 12 bottles of it a few Christmases back and blind tasting based on a recommendation. After a bottle, the remainder was poured down the sink. It's a 3/10 stout at best. If he can place that stout in second place then it's a really poor advert for stouts in general.
Should have had 🤔. Titanic Plumb Porter, or Old Tom. Fullers London Porter is on offer at Waitrose 3 for £5,75. Happy Christmas, and a Happy new Year 🎄☃️🤶🏂⛄
Great review Simon. I've tasted all of these except Brain's Dark and the Welsh Cake Stout and have a very similar opinion about them. Adnams Blackshore Stout is one to try and is really nice and at 4.2% is great for a session. Brewdog's Black Heart is also a good session stout at 4.1. Fuller's London Porter is absolutely superb and probably the best porter around run close by Sam Smith's Taddy porter. Titanic Plum Porter is a great tipple too. What I can't understand is why Shepherd Neame do some great porters for Aldi, Lidl and Sainsbury's but don't brew their own.
Big fan of Hall and Woodhouse stuff. Master Stoat is my thing, shame that the previous Stout they did was a Milk Stout has been discontinued, that was amazing, would have faired well in this run down
Ordered a 5L mini keg of a local brewery porter for Christmas. Had some Guinness export thought that was better than the usual stuff. Guinness in general is OK at best but as you say there are loads better stouts and yes I have drunk it in Ireland.
I have been drinking fullers london porter for years it's a wonderful beer.I order them from the brewery. I shall try to get the welshcake beer now.thanks for a great video simon.
Nice selection. As you mentioned, Titanic Plum Porter is another good one. Surprised you picked Brains Dark over Old Peculier, but hey ho (obvs, neither of these is a stout). The thing about Guinness is that - for me, as a cask drinker anyway - it's always a safe option in a pub that either doesn't have cask or doesn't keep it well.
I need to try these other stouts at some point. Guinness FES (7.5%) has had me in a headlock for years. I just love that extra bitterness and slight sweetness you get from FES. 🤤
Have drunk a fair few of those, love the Felinfoel Stout and Brains Dark of course as a Welshman.I'm an Ex-Pat in Germany and we have a lot of good dark beers here as well (it's not all Pils in Deutschland 😊) Tenby Harbwr brewery have a Chocolate and Orange Stout that is fantastic, have you tried that ?
Samuel Smiths do some nice stouts, Taddy Porter, Oatmeal Stout and Organic Chocolate Stout, however, best bottled stout I've had recently though was Wye Valley's Wholesome Stout. Titanic's Plum Porter is also excellent. The best stout I've had on tap recently was Felinfoel's stout, but perhaps that was due to it being served at cellar temperature, not 'extra cold', which kills the flavour. The best stout on tap was Beamish, back in the late 1990s, when you could still find it in the UK and before they were bought out and their brewery was closed.
Si, that Black Sheep Milk Stout is just nectar. Beautiful. Also, Would be a great idea to try the Viktoria Plzen beer.. a specially brewed beer for the United match tonight.
@djonfonsteen6331 Had the pleasure of drinking their milk stout at the three legged mare on draught when I visited York. Can’t find a pub that does it in my town though, I wish black sheep has a pint finder like Timothy Taylor’s do. I was bummed out to find out that they stopped doing holy grail on cask.
Heads up, a must try!!!! Belfast Black from the Whitewater Brewery in Northern Ireland (obviously). Just back from a business trip and it was one of those beers that stop you in your tracks. If any of you see it on offer in mainland UK, BUY IT!!!
Just come from Waitrose and the Fullers Porter was £1.50 and both the the St Peters and Old Peculiar was more and the Guinness was the same. Tinned porters and stouts tended to be more that £3.00. Bought the Fullers - definitely the best - their Black Cab stout is good too.
Belhaven Black is my local stout and really good Brewed 25 miles East of Edinburgh by Belhaven brewery now part of Greene King group ,harder to find but there 90 shilling wee heavy is recommended aswell
This brings back memories, back in the late1970's early 80s in Newcastle there was a pub called the Darnel it was owned by Belhaven, (one of their only pubs in the North East, I used to drink Heavy and 90 Shilling, great beer and a great bar.
Don't forget, Badger Master Stoat , is a Coffee Stout. Does exactly what it says on the bottle. My favourite Ale out of your choice has to be Theakston old Peculiar. Then Fullers London Porter, followed by Badgers Master Stoat👍😁🍻🍻🍻🍻
Very old school selection, kind of refreshing not to have loads of Imperial and/or flavoured stouts. I live in Cardiff, and it's great to have easy access to Brains Dark (which is weaker on draught than in the bottle, making it a great session beer). Would love to try the new Timothy Taylor/Northern Monk nitro stout but can't find it anywhere...
Can get a decent selection of dark beers in supermarkets up here in Scotland. Orkney dark island, broughton old jock, stewarts 80, to name a few. Would be interesting to see you review some as we're notably good for our dark, malty beers. 🍻 dark peculiour is a fave in this lineup for sure
The 4 for £7 from Morrisons is a great offer, but there isn't a great choice unfortunately. Last week I got 3 bottle conditioned beers, 2 from Thornbridge and 1 from Coniston, the other wasn't bottle conditioned, it was the St Peters Plum Porter, I think the bottle attracted me to it. All beers except the Plum Porter were very nice, the Plum Porter tasted a bit fake to me, as though flavourings, syrups and adjuncts had been added to achieve the taste of Plum. I will have to try the London Porter as I do love dark beers. Strange how the beer you thought was a bit fake, was the one that kept its head best, maybe there is something in that?.
its kinda funny i'm not really into drinking that much, and certainly not into all these sort of fancy beers but somehow i found myself here a year ago and can't stop watching. The videos are kinda relaxing tbh. What ever happened to Murphy's? Is that not the same as these? You never see it anymore.
Murphy's i's still brewed in Ireland but you never see it in England anymore. They used to sell it in my local Wetherspoons but I always thought it tasted like watered down Guinness. Beamish was another Irish stout that was popular here for a while but not seen it for years. I personally prefered Beamish to Guinness.
It would be interesting to see a beer tasting session without the taster knowing what beer is being tasted. I fancy there maybe preconceptions rather than actual findings from tastings in this method.
Absolutely fantastic beer and we can all thank Spaten Brewery for our fridges in our kitchens! Spaten invented the commercial fridge to keep their lagers cold, the first ever fridge, imagine that!
Good range review Simon cheers 👍Coffee stout from aldi nice tasty dark beer was missing from review but hey ho...I used to drink a great brain buster beer by marstons called owd rodger dark ale 8.5%abv many years ago I've never seen it again?
You know what that proves. For years people told me guiness from london didnt work because of the water and it meant you couldnt brew a decent dark beer. No fullers were doing it for decades it was guiness being guiness. You need to try loose cannon porter and their christmas stout. Brewed in Abingdon. The christmas stout was 9% last year so not for the faint hearted but was amazing. The other thing is abingdon distillary do a cracking christmas dark rhum
Always wondered with these top 10 videos, what happens to all those pints? Do you drink all of them or just tip them down the sink? I'd be half cut after about 6-7 and making a move for the rums. The thought of beer going to waste gives me the fear!
The Guinness from draft that I had in Ireland is miles away from the Guinness in a bottle or a can bought from a supermarket. On draft is very very good and delicious! I like Guinness. But I don’t say that it’s the best.
Just fyi - a Peculier (with an "e") is an ecclesiastical district, like the one that Masham (Theakston's hometown) is in. Peculiar (with an "a") is a description of something unusual or odd. Sorry, I'm not trying to be pedantic. I just thought you might be interested! Personally, I would just describe Old Peculier as an absolutely delicious dark ale, especially on draught !!
Sounds like the wife came in.
"It's alright love, just having breakfast"!
Old Peculiar will always hold a special place in my heart 🖤

@@alansinclair7659 One pub in Chesterfield has always got Murphys on
It would be interesting to see a beer tasting session without the taster knowing what beer is being tasted. I fancy there maybe preconceptions rather than actual findings from tastings in this method.
You need to try chantry brewery’s diamond black stout it’s very nice I’m sure you’ll love it Simon.
Simon, off topic but have you tried Spaten lager? I got some in bottles, German beer , though it was good. What’s your opinion?
Absolutely fantastic beer and we can all thank Spaten Brewery for our fridges in our kitchens! Spaten invented the commercial fridge to keep their lagers cold, the first ever fridge, imagine that!
@ Thanks for the info. Bargain booze got 3 bottles of 500mg for a fiver near me in Manchester

Fill your shopping trolley, lad
Good range review Simon cheers 👍Coffee stout from aldi nice tasty dark beer was missing from review but hey ho...I used to drink a great brain buster beer by marstons called owd rodger dark ale 8.5%abv many years ago I've never seen it again?
I remember this beer from years back. Lovely. The best way to get rodgered !
I could do the lot, no worries. 😂
As a coffee lover I quite enjoyed the Badger.
Great review, Simon. We definitely need more sunshine, but I think you meant Parma Violets, rather than ultra violet? 🍻
Good to see somebody else banging on how crap Guinness is, nice one Simon🍺👍
The Guinness from draft that I had in Ireland is miles away from the Guinness in a bottle or a can bought from a supermarket.
On draft is very very good and delicious!
I like Guinness.
But I don’t say that it’s the best.
Kozel Dark is my go to - outstanding dark beer and they even sell it in.... you guessed it!
Home Bargains!
No
Morrisons have fullers black cab stout i really liked that
...third comment. That Gower one is superb in my opinion. Great brewery
Old peculiar is a class above the rest
It used to be. It is utterly repulsive now
Mauldon's Blackberry Porter is fantastic
Bingley Brewery did a plum porter. Ilkley might have but I never saw it (though, to be fair, I seem to see more Bingley's in my locals than Ilkley's).
Belhaven do great stout
Brewdog Black Heart is identical to Guinness in a can even has the widget thing.
Black Heart is nice but I'd say it's closer to Murphy's than the G.
Can’t beat Guinness
Oh, yes you can.
Lion stout if you can get hold of it is great stuff
It's often in Tesco world foods section with other Jamaican products, and you're right it's lovely
One of my guity pleasures is McEwans Champion. It's erm, potent.
I'm going to get some London porter now
Just fyi - a Peculier (with an "e") is an ecclesiastical district, like the one that Masham (Theakston's hometown) is in.
Peculiar (with an "a") is a description of something unusual or odd.
Sorry, I'm not trying to be pedantic. I just thought you might be interested!
Personally, I would just describe Old Peculier as an absolutely delicious dark ale, especially on draught !!
You should have included the Aldi coffee stout
Did you have to finish them all the same day ?
The Guinness Extra Stout in America is 5.6%.
Statutory gallon good work feller 😅
