Hi Darragh, really enjoyed your more balanced take on Ireland's three premier stouts. I always found Guinness and Murphy's, to be quite similar to one another and preferred Beamish, for its' more roasted barley flavour. Having said that, I've been drinking stout for more than fifty years and I was an old soul when I started. Your maturity is definitely showing and that's no bad thing, both of the Cork, stouts are too good to be dismissed out of hand. I live in Central London, where all three are available, but Guinness, almost everywhere, Murphy's, less so and Beamish, quite difficult to find. Beamish & Crawford, used to have a tie in with Young's Brewery, when it was brewed in Wandsworth, South West London, I don't think that tie still exists. At more than twice your age, I hope to enjoy my stout for many years to come and I hope you do too, all the best now.

the fact that you drank Beamish in the oval is perfect, as the old brewery is literally just on the other side of the road, granted it's not made there anymore. Still, the bit about the "rolling the kegs straight out of the brewery into the pub" was most likely more accurate than you knew lol!

You made a very good pint (sic) about maybe moving on to another stout as you get older. I started as a lager drinker in the mid 1990s (Miller) then moved to another lager (Heineken) after a few years. I then started drinking Guinness when I was around 25 or so and then changed to Beamish in my early 30s. Having said that I would drink only Guinness when in Dublin, and drink mostly Murphy's when in Cork as it is not readily available on draft in Limerick.

We drank gallons of Murphys in Belfast in the 90s because it was £1 a pt! It would be weaker taste wise than Guinness. Unfortunately or fortunately we no longer have Murphys but we do have Beamish popping up in the Sunflower in Belfast and it is gloriously creamy. Hope they start rolling it out more in the North. Old comment, but Murphy's is starting to become a lot more available in Dublin. Even more casual pubs that are more like restaurants are getting taps in. I'm guessing with Heineken cutting their losses with Islands Edge they've started pushing Murphy's and Beamish a lot more.

Visited family in Limerick and Cork in 2005 and 2015 and Loved Beamish “the gentle stout”. I always found Murphys to have a roasted coffee like flavor. Returned in 2023 and Beamish was hard to find in Limerick, Galway, and Killarney. I did have a nice pint of beamish upon arrival and departure at Shannon. It was introduced here in the states on 2 occasions that I know of but never took hold.

Stout nights are great fun. 😁
Smithfield in Dublin was good for a while. One night last year my friend and I started in Oscars with Island's Edge and Murphy's then around Walshe's to finish on the Guinness and Beamish. I would love to find somewhere in Ireland where we could do that again. (O'Hara's included). Somerset has no problem showing off their ciders, why can't Ireland do that with stout.
I also agree with your Coors and Moretti example. But Island Edge is the Coors, Guinness/Murphy's is the Moretti and Beamish is some mad Belgian Beer.

The range of flavours in stouts is amazing. Coffee, tobacco, liquorice, chocolate. Then you get barrel aged ones with whisky or sherry notes. Then there's the Imperial stouts that get to 7% and more. Find a good pub that does decent beer, rather than a craft beer pub, and try whatever stouts they have. It'll be a taste sensation

I recently did a blind taste of beamish and Guinness. Hadn't drank either in a long while. Found the Beamish to be a lot more bitter, roasty, coffee, get a burnt flavour so I assume they my use patent malt, also got a good hazelnut flavour from beamish. Thought Guinness was quite bland compared to Beamish and didn't get the flavour you should get from a stout. I did find Guinness to be more creamier. The burnt flavour you get could be from black patent malt, which is different to roasted malt. This malt also gives a blackcurrant flavour.

You're missing out on so many good stouts and porters .
    Titanic porter
    Anspach hobday London porter
    Titanic stout
And neepsend stout are usually great .
These are just the basic starters for the better offerings.

For me Murphy's is like a mediocre Guinness but Beamish is its own thing. Love Beamish and Guinness (both very different drinks) and haven't found a stout as good as them.

Beamish Irish Stout - 4.1% ABV
    4.0%
OVERVIEW. United Kingdom- Irish Dry Stout- 4.0% ABV. Since 1856, Murphys Stout still remains true to its roots. The Murphy brothers crafted a genuine dry stout that was both a birthright and a passion.
    4.2%
This makes sense when you consider that alcohol is the main source of calories in beers. Guinness Draught has a lower alcohol content, at 4.2% alcohol by volume, compared with 5% for Budweiser and Heineken, and 4.9% for the Samuel Adams Cream Stout.

It's about time we saw Beamish back in England !
I've had my own Beamish branded glass since about 1990,
You could get Beamish almost everywhere in South East London where I live. At that time Beamish was my favourite followed by Guinness and then Murphy's.
When inspector Morse was first broadcast, at the add breaks it used to say inspector Morse sponsored by Beamish.
These days I always my souts in that same Beamish glass, which I take very good care of. Cheers 🍻 can't find an emoji with 2 stouts😂

Beamish is more of an acquired taste which explains why it was always an old man's drink especially in the quiet pubs where a pint of Beamish was always the cheapest pint you could get
