This tune was learned from Bruce Greene of Yancey Co., NC, where Jason grew up, and is sourced to the playing of Clarence Rigdon (b. 1909) and Charlie Kinney (b. 1906), both of Lewis County, KY. Rigdon and Kinney both learned music like this piece from their fathers, who in turn picked up the old tunes as they traveled down the Licking and Ohio Rivers. “Kicked Up a Devil of a Row” does not appear to have been commonly played. As far as we know, it is sourced only to these Lewis Co. fiddlers, at least with this setting and title. It bears rhythmic qualities not unlike some of the polkas played in the southern regions of Ireland, however, and may be a cousin of the Irish tune known as “Up and Away.” The tune evokes some Swedish polska ambience as well. To be sure, travelers and settlers from many places were drawn to the work opportunities, accessible transportation, and beauty of the Ohio River region in those days. Regardless of wherever this tune began, it feels right at home in Appalachian old-time music.
