We smile a little over that other countries coffee looks like tea. Swedish coffee is black as death and works like a morning after pill. Anyways, a bottle brush bent to fit the curvature of the pot sides works fine. Or the old trick to occasionally add a couple of tablespoons of rice and soapy water, then giving the pot a good shake with your hand over the openeing. The rice cleans out all the awkward angles and your pot comes out sparkling. ✨
Why does the Bodum epebo include 3 brewing methods in the manual: 1)Add coffee to funnel and seal before turning on. 2) Add coffee to funnel and place on top but do not seal until water is boiling 3) Add funnel and seal then add coffee once water is boiling? What are the impacts and differences of the 3 methods?
Well done video and informative. Thank you!
Well done. Enjoyed the edit too. Wonderful composition in your shots, particularly you talking on the right and then the shot with the siphon being on the left of the screen with the pot plant in the right of the frame. Great lighting and great audio to. Nice production.
whoa.hold up.bodum makes one? thank the gods for Amazon lol.
My first job was in food service. We would clean the coffee pots by wetting a paper towel, then throwing it into the pot and spinning it around in there. Comes clean every time and it doesn't matter what shape the pot is, as long as the paper towel can fit
Great advice! I'll give that a try to clean the Syphon 😅
Looks delicious! I've had syphon coffee before a few times, but never thought to buy one at home. Looks like a cafe thing...
This was very helpful. I’m considering getting my husband one for his birthday. Thank you!
If he loves coffee he'll really enjoy it! It looks cool on the countertop as well, a real conversation starter!
It is not necessary to wait to add your grounds. You also do not have to wait to put the upper chamber on top. Just set it up with hot water to start with and no need to dicker with it. I love mine. It makes even average coffee taste amazing.
Isn’t this a sort of convoluted version of the Hario switch or Clever brewers?
Yeah it is a bit of faff. Tastes great though, and looks "sciency" 🤣
I think the significant difference is that the slurry is kept at a very high temperature, just below boiling.
Have one of these ready to order and wanted to get some insight on it first. Thank you for the info and it has helped cement my decision to get one!! Subscribed because I love coffee making apparatuses and so I think I will enjoy your channel immensely!!
if I'm buying exclusively for expensive coffee (and taste/smell), would syphon be a better choice or v60?
great video I learned a lot.
Thanks for showing how best to use the coffee syphon apparatus ...
Thank you. Syphon coffee is my favourite way of brewing coffee as well. The only problem is that it is a pain to clean. Otherwise, I would use it every day .
Yes it really makes amazing coffee and very forgiving of different grind sizes. I would usually use a Syphon for fancy beans 😉
Thank you. Do you know if I can put it directly over a gas flame? Or directly onto a hot plate? Thank you
This one NO. It's electric
Great video! There isn't alot of non bodum produced content on this brewer. I just got mine 2 days ago and tried a few recipes and will give yours a crack tomorrow! I let it do it for the full 4 minutes on day 1 and what a terrible cup!
Glad go see yours boils the coffee at the top too! It doesn't mention it in the manual and all the other traditional syphon method videos I watched never showed it!
Do you know if there is a filter available for this?
I know the bodum one doesn't require a filter, and it filters very well using gravity, but you can replace the plastic divider from bodums site for a small amount if it wears out. Haven't had that problem myself yet 😃
Hi Charlie! Hello from Italy - just a recent supercurious coffe lover. Have just found your video here, wil look into more of them :) . I really like your detailed review, you really inspire confidence in viewers! (And I've watched many vids around - they're all good in their own ways, not saying, anyway). Even before I'm checking (so I won't forget to write this later), I'd really like you to try the Italian "napoletana / cuccumella" flip drip coffee pot. I have tried the moka (which, around the '50s-'60s, replaced the napoletana flip drip in Italian homes - but I still have my granny's ones - it made far better coffee in most people's views), the pour over, the nitro, the bar espressos of course and americano, but I still stick to the flip drip. I havent found a single review on the texture of its brew, and I'd really like an opinion from out of Italy. On ebay/amazon you'll find some, Ilsa is the main brand which still produces them (I recommend the steel ones, for safety and because I switched to them for good - so we could share views on it). Oh and, I came here to know more about the Bodum syphon. Was uncertain but thanks to you I'll definitely get one - an open flame one (cheaper to heat) but I'll use a flame reducer flat net and will be careful (Bodum Santos I mean). Cheers! Ludo :)
Thanks for your comment..I must try a flip top Italian style! If ai like it I'll make a video on it 😉
@@homecafecharlie yes, I like to get supergeek about things and I still kinda trust it is a unique method (it was invented by a French but let's get over that hehe - they always used simpler filter pots anyway). Because it is all closed in the metal pot so it holds (I'd tend to think) hot temperature best, either cold or pre-heated water is still brought to boil, then you wait a few seconds off the fire for it to go back down to, you know, the right brewing temperature, then you flip it (unlike with the pour-over which to me looks like getting less hot in the air while pouring and brewing)) The water uses some pressure (its own weight) and is forced to soak well into the grind. What would still make me favor this, generally speaking, to the syphon, is the syphon stays open so might lose some aroma in the open air maybe? (Then there are popular tips to improve the flip-drip results, such as closing the beak with a little paper hood, adjusting the quantity of grind pressed into the filter tank, etc. Thanks to you and whenever that may happen, any question just ask :) ciao! Respect (and, am so jeally of your pots and know-how of course)) )
Hi, is there a certain type of coffee which is better brew with a syphon ? I usually drink dark roasted coffee, not sure a syphon is suitable .Thanks !
Run to your local Target store. They have them on sale for 18.00!
you live in Japan!?wow!
Not anymore but I did for 10 years!
I first heard of siphon coffee makers watching classic British film. Check out Black Narcissus or Night Train to Munich to see one of these in action. I think directors liked to use them in movies because they're so dramatic looking and cool.
They really do look like science machines 😉
Hi Charlie! Could you make a syphon comparison between Hario Technica and Next..?
Good idea! I don't have the budget for lots of equipment but I'll reach out to Hario and see if they are willing to send me some gear to review
Hi Charlie. I have the stovetop version of the Bodum Pebo. I feel it takes far too long for the coffee to siphon back down to the lower chamber, and occasionally the upper chamber does not empty completely, making the coffee ruined. I've tried different grinds and never use high heat. Like you, I preheat the water. Do you have any suggestions as to why the coffee in top carafe takes so long to enter the bottom? Thank you!
Oh, I would think if it is cold it should filter down easily. Mine has no problem if I turn off the pot at 60 seconds. Maybe remove it from any heat source and see if it drops faster?
It's a bit different but I have a Cona (stovetop) siphon. (the central filter in the middle is different but the principle is identical) I had exactly the same trouble and worked out that air was leaking into the gap between the two chambers when the coffee was going back down. (meaning that the vacuum in the bottom chamber was gone before all the coffee had filtered down to it.) I fixed it by grinding very slightly courser and making sure the upper chamber was firmly fixed into the lower one so there was no possibility of an air leak. (slightly terrifying pushing down firmly but not too firmly when the whole thing's made of glass. Luckily Cona had been around for quite a while and replacement parts are pretty easy to come by on ebay.) Hope this might help.
@@broado1 Nice that's good to know. The seal is super important. If the rubber gets degraded I saw on their site that they sell the rubber seals for quite a cheap price, so if the seal is a problem you can easily fix it.
@@homecafecharlie Yes indeed! SUPER important! I replaced the rubber seal on one of mine. On a side note I have a bigger cona called a Standard model (sometimes Standard Kitchen Model) which comfortably holds just under 2 pints more or less. The reason I'm telling you this is that it has a MUCH wider neck which is easier to clean (still a bit fiddly but certainly easier than the smaller one. I mean, I know you already have a siphon but hey, you can't have too many coffee makers! 😉 ) Here's a picture:

Please check the seal. Then run a water cycle and observe how fast it syphons back. If your coffee grind size is correct It shouldn't take longer than 45 seconds in most cases, under 400ml... If STILL you get quite abnormally long brewing times, check your portafilter and replace the filter or try another filter brand
This recipe is overly complicated. I grind coffee ultra fine, like with Turkish coffee and use a 17:1 water to coffee ratio. I put cold water in the bottom and the coffee in the top and give it a little shake to make sure the coffee bed is flat. I press the button and walk away. The machine beeps when it begins brewing. When it beeps a second time, I give the top a little shake to ensure the coffee bed is flat and then wait for the coffee to come down to the bottom. That's it. Using an extra timer and boiling the water ahead of time adds complexity that we really don't need at all.
Should be at least 14:1 otherwise it`s coffee water, not coffee. For cezve, it`s usually 10:1.
@@masterofreality926 14:1 is for coarse grind, like for a French Press. 17:1 is for fine grind, such as for a pourover or a siphon. 10:1 is espresso.
I want some of that coffee. Can you buy that on Amazon
Yep, check the description for links!
@@homecafecharlie okay thank you
which is better or more acidity ? mokapot or siphoon
Biggest difference is body. Moka pot tends to be thicker and have more texture, Syphon is a cleaner more crisp taste
Put ice and table salt in the bottom of the pot you want to clean, swirl the pot around and watch it come clean
Question. Do you have to make a full pot every time.
No you can make less if you only want a little drink!
“What are we doing making Meth?”
🤣
Why is this brewer on Amazon?
naisu!
I have this Bodum Siphon Coffee maker, and it was lovely until the coffee chamber’s bottom seals started to leak coffee all over the place and on the electric burner as well. So far, I do not recommend. This issue started happening at the 5th month of ownership.
Wow I didn't know that. I've had this one for a while and so far no problems. Did you contact bodum?
@@homecafecharlie hey, yes, I have contacted Bodum. They said that they would replace my coffee pot chamber when they have inventory but it would take some time.
These things seem completely over complicated. Making cowboy coffee in a pot on the stove then pouring it thru a screen or filter into another jug would do the same thing, when you think about it that's all these siphons do. Hot water mixed with coffee then filtered, even a French press does the same thing in the end
I disagree that it is that simple. Of course some of it is just posturing, but different heating methods, pressures, direct and indirect, have a big impact on flavour. Again though, it's mostly for people who would notice that kind of thing. If I have a fancy Chateau Whatever wine from Tucany, I can only really pick out Red/White and Dry/Sweet. Anything beyond that is beyond my basic wine understanding, but I've met wine people who can tell you the processing methods, time of year it was harvested and weird stuff like that without seeing the bottle. Taste is too subjective to simplify to just a brew method or a product.
Looks amazing! I would've loved a 60fps video though.
Great video nevertheless :)
I shot it in 60fps but made a rookie mistake in Davinci Resolve. All my other videos are 60fps, and the next one will be too 😉
@@homecafecharlie Awesome! Can't wait.
@@homecafecharlie i want 2k video resolution. it will be pleasant to watch it! :D
Just clean the bottom one with isopropyl
I now have this machine. Why don't you let the machine brew for the full 4 minutes?
Edit: Also, the machine in this video is sold at Target online now.
That's a great question. There is a default brew timer on the syphon unit itself, but that's just what the manufacturer sets and it's really up to the person brewing the coffee to find the best timing. I like my timings but it's really good to experiment and find out what works best for you and the coffee you brew ;)
I want this... but I don't want to clean it...
It's worth it for me, but I'm always gonna be an espresso guy ;)
Gale from breaking bad made siphon coffee.
Among other things 🤣
Why does my water not siphon back to the bottom 😒
You have to turn the heat off and then it should syphon back. If it isn't doing that you might have ground a bit too fine and it's clogging up the filter. Let me know what works
Rinse with ice water. No water spots!
Great tip!!!
Can't ser any difference with a french press method, Other than "it looks cool with water going up and down". You put coffe into water, let It Bloom, infuse and the separate water from thecoffee. No pressure involved in the estraction itself. Applies to both methods.
Sorry but it looks stupid.. So much trouble for a Turkish coffee
Never had one but I don't see the difference from a normal Turkish
if you dotn agitate the coffee by stiring it it will taste better
