I was wondering how these are made after seeing some for sale at an art show. Now I know why they cost $500 and more. Lots of hard work and fine tuning. You played it beautifully.

That is my favorite percussion instrument you have made so far. Beautiful sound and shape as well. There is a Scottish woodturner on RUclips named Gary, I can't remember his last name, who has a beautiful transparent painting technique that looks like galaxies. I think that would look really nice on this.
Holy cow! Well done, Sir. This gives me every confidence that when you do get back to the metal spinning that your Hang drum will be incredible too, no doubt.
AWESOME! It sounds as good as some of the expensive ones I've heard. Looks Great, too! Now, I have to go buy a propane tank... see what you've done... Lol. ( I can't wait to get started. You're an inspiration!)
@@gorillaau Actually, I bought 4 tanks, but living at 7,600ft up in the mountains, I've been using them as propane tanks. I do walk by them and tap on them, and the pitch tells me how full they are.
@@thomasmartinscott I have used that trick myself for larger tanks, those that you can't easily rock. The smaller BBQ size one trick is to pour hot water down a side. The hot water will evaporate off the section that has no liquid gas, leaving a clear line of the liquid gas inside. Caveat: I think LPG as we have is the same.
Sounds nice. I was hoping to hear explaination of how to cut the notes. Sure I saw the circles & lines but not sizes & lengths. Thank you for not putting in horrible background music.
Size and length is determined by the note itself. Draw out the pattern and start by cutting the highest note first. Meaning, cut the slots till you achieve the note you want. From there cut each note a little deeper until you get your octave. There is no set measurements for notes.
Very nice, innovative idea ! Let it be most popular instrument, it is suitable for all sorts of musical scales and types of music that is either for folk, western, Indian or another forms. You shall be awarded by many
Very nicely done .. Sounds good too .. Would have like a closer look at the underside .. Would it be useful to weld a tube to, Darbuka style, or is that a no no ?
Hi Uncle Cy. Somebody bought me a tongue drum as a present, but I do not like the color. I am quite an artistic person and wondered if I could paint it myself. I would love to spray it and have some metallic element to the paint graduating into different colors. I thought about maybe spraying it with paint, but I wondered what one you might recommend and whether I need to mask up all the vents on the drum so that the paint does not get inside. Can you give me any advise on this and how to avoid it changing the sound. Many thanks, Elaine.
Dear Mr. Uncle Cy, I am doing my own tank drum and I came to stage where I need to tune the tongues. Can you please tell me how much approximately does the paint lower the frequency of the tongue? I know it depends on how many coats you put on so I would be grateful to know how many coats did you put on while spraying and how much did it lower the frequency? One more question :) What tuning app are you using? Your answers would be much appreciated! Tnx a lot for sharing this video, it is the best tutorial I found so far.
I found that the paint had almost no effect on the sound, if there was any it was not something the human ear could pick up. The tuning app I use is Tuneit Lite.
@@DIYwithUncleCy Thank you so so much Uncle Cy. It was bothering me for some time and I couldn't find an answer. I wish you all the best and you made me so happy with your response. God bless you ✌✌✌
that's a really great drum you made there, I have to mention that I heard that highest note is still a bit off, maybe if you made the tongues differ in size you'd have an easier time tuning them?
I noticed the kids playing hard with them and the note unannealed tangs are softer/might bend easier than if they are annealed then the structure of the metal gets harder. Some peopel say they notice the differenc ein tone but I dont lol. Mostly for metallurgy purposes although if kids aren't banging on them it shouldn't matter :p
Hi greetings from Argentina. I am musician, i ea te to make this instrument. Where did you get the paterns and the meissures to do the cuts?. Very cool!!! Thank you!!
Hi there. I'm trying to make one myself and I would like to know what key you made this one in? What notes and where on the drum. Very much appreciated and great video ❤️
This one was in the key of "C". I lay out the notes so that alternating strikes plays the scale. I put the lower notes at the top and higher notes on the side toward me. Hope that helps.
Awesome... Questions The more you cut a tongue, the lower the pitch? The more you Sand a tongue, the higher you can raise a pitch? Tuning the tongues in a star pattern rather than clockwise or counter clockwise is important because every time you tune a tongue it effects the other tongues? Did I get this right?
The pattern of tuning has little to no effect. I settled on the pattern I used because it is intuitive to use (the notes switch between hands consecutively). But yes longer slots = lower notes and thinner tongues = higher notes.
K. Rose B actually the Etsy site is a dead site. I now sell on EBay. If you look up my channel I recently released a slideshow it has the link to the eBay store in the description.
I was about to comment on tuning it to c major, was going to say you should do a minor. But then I realized I’m an idiot because a minor is the same as c major.
Hello Bro, Did you apply primer for painting? Or just paint? Does the primer before the ink disrupt the sound? Gratidão for the video brother. Magic work, I will do one with your inspiration. Namaste.
I have Done one with 12 around the outside plus the one in the middle and tuned it to a chromatic scale. I found it difficult to play, but I am not a musician by any stretch. It would become easier if I played it more and memorized the layout. It was an earlier attempt so the layout of the notes was not as intuitive as the versions I currently make. My favorite ones so far have been scaled for Blues (C major, G major, F major) they sound radical. I have done several in different pentatonic scales as well including a 2 octave version. I will probably play around a bit more with a Chromatic version and use the layout method I am using now to see if it makes it easier to play. Thanks for watching and for the comment/question.
