The FIFTY - Line 7/50 - Joffre Peak - Near Death on a Daunting Peak

  • North of Pemberton, BC lies a big, daunting and dangerous peak called Joffre. In a project filled with many intimidating lines, Joffre presents the first fear inducing challenge of the season. Low snow and sketchy steeps are met with a nearly tragic ending that teaches us all that bad things can happen in the mountains.
This is line 7 completed of The FIFTY, a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

This piece of art should be required viewing for backcountry travelers of all stripes. From its themes touching on decision making, weather, climate change, line selection and balancing altruism and risk tolerance in the wilderness, to the jaw-dropping cinematography and flowing yet ominous cello soundtrack, it ranks as one of the best stand alone ski movies I have had the pleasure to watch. And watch again. The bonus episode provides additional depth and analysis. Lays to rest finally the myth that skiers and snowboarders are all shallow adrenaline junky hedonists with a death wish.
How the people that produced this are "amateurs" is beyond me to explain.

FYI Cody Townsend and Bjarne Salén are both very much professional skiers and film makers. Not amateurs.
But yea, these videos show that there's so much more to backcountry/extreme skiing than hitting big jumps and racing avalanche to a tune of pumpy background music. These truly are sobering views into the process of backcountry skiing that I feel are often neglected in ski movies of the past.

That comment you made about us reaching the time of "last descents" really hit me hard man. It sucks what we're doing to this planet but im stoked that i get to see some of it through this series. Keep it up!

It sucks to actually witness this. To truly see skiable lines begin to go away. It's hard to know what to do about it but I sure hope one day we can reverse this impact we're having on the planet.

@@CodyTownsend A few ideas of things to do about it, which won't magically fix the problem but will at least contribute a little bit to not making it worse: don't vote for climate change denying representatives, limit plane trips as much as possible, get an electric car if you can afford it and it fits your lifestyle, reduce your meat consumption, eat local and seasonal, don't buy new crap all the time, make stuff last, repair and reuse as much as possible. For now technology is nowhere close to allowing us to reverse this, it's going to get significantly worse, best we can do is try to not make it even worse than that.

It's really interesting to come back and watch this knowing that the couloir doesn't exist anymore after the rockslide. It's very possible you had one of the last descents before May and everyone should be so thankful it's preserved in a proper video here. Once the Joffre park opens up again it'll be interesting to see if there's any remaining lines that go, hopefully at least one couloir to leave Joffre as a ski decent!

Watching many or the videos in this series I am impressed by your humility and sobriety regarding being in the mountains. I spend way more of my time on a bike now but so many videos in this era of "Social Media Professional Athletes" glamorizes everything to the point of distorting reality. Really well done. You have me getting back on skis and into the mountains again.

I really like your approach on this, the willingness to walk away when things are not right. I think this is so important, especially for young people. Back when I was young, mid 70s there was two books I read on rock climbing written by Royal Robbins, these two books were my guide to climbing and he said essentially the same thing, the mt can wait. This helped me to back off if climbs for any number of reasons, I always returned and climbed them but when things were right and that included me not being mentally or physically prepared. Much respect for you and the group you climb and ski with, thanks

This is the first online vlog I've followed from the start. Your first couple episodes were a great lead-up to my first touring trip, and now that I'm hooked (on both), I'm definitely along for the rest of your ride.
Thanks for making safe, cool. I've been in a "run to get the chopper" moment in the mountains. I know that feeling. Risks are a real part of playing where we play and when we play there, but I applaud you and the crew for being wise up there. Also, kudos for not glamorizing unnecessary risks. (and I agree with you...roads/snow are usually far scarier than skis/snow)

Good example in this film of the three things necessary for a successful mountaineering expedition: A. You have to be physically capable, B. You have to be mentally capable, and C. The conditions have to be favorable. A. is by far the easiest and B. is the most important, specifically in regards to determining C, given that C. is out of your control. Each expedition hinges on knowing when to turn back.

However, my great, great, great, great, great grandchildren will be laughing harder than I am now, about the "Last Descent" comment, as they're rocketing down awesome powder filled lines. (That's if they still have their freedom & money.) Glaciers change & flow (just like a river; it's frozen H2O, so it takes a while), recede & grow, and all anyone has to do is look at ALL *real* data on snowfall & temps, to see that. Alas, I won't change the minds of these people leaving comments here. But if even our grandchildren aren't laughing, it will only be because there's tons of great snow out there to ski on, but they can't, because of the oppression they're living under. If anyone is interested in finding any credible info on this subject, check out *Tony* *Heller* . He has a Channel on RUclips, along with a LONG list of accomplishments, history, and education.

Sounds like you read a lot so you should potentially do a little bit more and see what happened to Joffre Peak in May of 2019...then get back to me on your thoughts

If I were Cody, I wouldn't want douchebags like you watching my videos.
