- The Cold Fusion line off of North Timpanogos, UT can be seen from the cities of Utah miles away and thousands of feet below. Its sight alone draws in skiers like bears to honey. What drew The FIFTY crew to Cold Fusion is a potential for sunny skies and unusually stable avalanche conditions. With a last minute call from Utah locals, the crew decides to hop in the car, drive across the desert and give Cold Fusion a chance. Starring Cody Townsend, Bjarne Salen, Drew Peterson and Mali Noyes. Photography by Bjarne Salen and Ming Poon.
This is Episode 22 for The FIFTY, and line 21 completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

I wish I was sponsored too
Yeah- show us the bases/edges!!!
Laugh or cry, right? Skis are for skiing, and coreshots are just part of the game
Just wait for a demo day, then you can get all the rocks out of your system.
There are two kinds of skis in this world: Rock skis, and skis that are on their way to becoming rock skis.
Mapping at the beginning was sick!! I think we need a Bjarne special!!
Totally agree.. loved that as well!
I saw this line during school out the window after watching this lol
Never let a cross-country skier set the pace on a skin track, is the best thing I've ever heard. Keep it up!
As someone living in the Midwest who's had this book sitting on their coffee table for the past couple years, I love watching this series and watching these lines come to life. Thanks for these videos. Stay safe.
Cody,
Really digging your addition of the avalanche awareness aspect of this episode as well as the technical breakdown of the route! It's really cool to see that portion of your planning and video editing! Keep 'em coming. Love these vids!
Just trying to keep it real and show what we do out there. Not really doing anything for the cameras we wouldn't do on a normal day.
Well said
My favorite so far...the new mapping is wicked cool! I really like the commentary during safety protocols; it's important to show the serious side of a good time. Great work Fifty posse!!!
Super sketchy man.....
....crackin open a recovery beer, in public, in Utah County. YEW!
teleroi 😭😭😭😂😂😂
Hey... Things in the mountains are different here than in the Mormonville Valley haha
@@ErikFullmer it'Saul Good man, here behind the Zion Curtain. YEW!
In Provo too hahahaha
I like how so many people climb mountains and they hit the summit and that's the goal and its a good goal because that climb looks very hard for the average person. These people hit the summit and they're like ok we summited this mountain now lets do what we actually came here to do and ski down this gnarly looking steep rocky avalanche chute.

Point of order:
Timpnanogos is the second highest peak in the Wasatch at 11,752’
Mount Nebo, 40 miles to the south, is number one at 11,929’
I was just about to point this out. I enjoy both mountains quite a bit but what makes Mt Nebo so great is that it’s not very crowded.
Yup, learned that after I said that and figured I’d be corrected on that. Thanks!
@@CodyTownsend That settles it! You've got to come back and ski Nebo to get the credit.
Are there any good lines on Nebo? I’ve hiked it many times (damn near got fried in an unexpected lighting storm there) but have never BC skied in that area.
ecycled3d in terms of big, aesthetic lines, the NW couloir and it’s parallel neighbor, the champagne, are pretty epic. Approach from Pole canyon in late April - early May, depending on conditions and seasonal snow totals
Mapping visualization from 3:15 - 3:45 was great, love that for framing the adventure, please continue to have that for the rest of the series!
Love the new bit showing the aerial & routes! Makes it much easier to follow for those of us unfamiliar with the fifty.
Love how you guys show the beacon checks! Most people overlook such simple gear checks so hopefully people can learn from it.
The trail at the end was hilarious 😂
21 in and this is the best series on RUclips... Hands down.
“Never let the cross county skier set the pace on a skin track”! Ha, I know that too well, having skied regularly with a once ultra-runner myself. Just as I would summit, he would be skins off, refueled, and ready to rip...
Oh, and nice color matching, team orange!
Show us your ski's after hitting those rocks😅
My favourite episode so far I think. Taking the drone out must be such a pain but the shots really make a difference. Bjarne must be so busy with all the shots in this. Big respect.
How to call someone a cu*t without actually calling them a cu*t..... a video. ... and well deserved.
Bushwhacking on BC skis builds character....I was dodging branches sitting at my desk watching it!....Stellar line, avalanche path?...sick!..“Never let the cross county skier set the pace on a skin track”! ...Mali looks like a force of nature, next time give her a heavy pack to haul up..slow her down a bit....Beautiful Mountain.....LOVE this series! Awesome camera work Bjarne...
"The adventure is not over until you get to the car." Somebody needs to put that on a t-shirt.
Bjarne is a great photographer
Agreed
Gotta love tight nature trail (downhill, fast) skiing!
Iphone weather: sun with a little cloud thing FTW.
Don't think it could be a better time to catch up on the episodes ! This episode gave me so much skiing envy ! Really...Thank you from Belgium
Our pleasure!
Listening to the ski out freak out - I feel so much better about myself. I AM NOT ALONE lol
Soooo SWEET! drove RIGHT by your Line today after two days of Nordic Ski Racing at JNQ's at Solider Hollow with Dewachen (12) who KILLED it! saw your Line! THANK YOU, watched this vid tonight with Dewa! KEEP UP THE GREAT Vids and Noble Effort on the 50!
head bowed, spirit vowed
from Durango!
The "ski out" is typically more spicy than the line your after in WA state also. Epic tree/trail run to close out the video! 🤘😁🤘

The new map format for the climb and ski was very cool.
Love this project. Thanks for showing a little mountaineering with the snow pack as well. We need more of that.
Show us your ski's after hitting those rocks😅
All skis in the backcountry are rock skis
@@CheyenneWills My man
Looked like a super fun descent. Seems like Mali is a bit of a rockstar on the way down as well as the way up.
Damn Cody Townsend that's a blast from the past! What's up man. We used to work at Sanderlings together, among other things. Now I'm starting to wonder if I was recommended this video because I like snowboarding and snowsports or because youtube knows I know you lol
You and Andrew Drummond need to link up this spring for Huntington ravine in new Hampshire 👍 thanks for the content! Love the channel
Your work is so extraordinary. Netflix should know about you, and produce a feature documentary.
You really upped your soundtrack game! Keep the good jams coming!
Born and raised in Utah. 25 years of age and this will be my first year skiing. Super psyched to take advantage of my backyard.
I loved the beginning music on the background by the way!🤩
Been waiting for this. Love this series!
Love it, keep em coming
Love this!
AWESOME AS ALWAYS!
Love your attitude guys! 100% posing-free, that is quite refreshing.
I’ve skied twice in my life, live in West Australia and barely see snow but fuck I love these videos. Keep up the great content!
Lovely inversion. Bane of us valley dwellers.
Loved this video a ton, a really good length and the detail breakdown on the line was super dope!
Love that map graphic at the beginning! Keep up the good work!
Hell yeah Cody! So great to see you finally get into some good snow for the Fifty, and good on y'all for digging a pit and sharing with us. Also, Mali is a local homie and absolute shredder! Stoked to see her on this trip.
As always a great video👍
Those poor skis, nasty rocks🙈
That was so sick 🤙🤙
I enjoyed seeing the snow science segment.
I feel like a scold for saying this and it's probably obvious to everyone, but... assessing avalanche safety is way more complicated than that brief "ECT digression".
For one thing, Cody (I think) mentioned a persistent weak layer early in the video. Those can be present in some places but not in others due to wind and weather affect on the early-season hoar, so if you don't dig your pits in the right places you won't find the true hazard. When Cody mentioned doing "hasty" pits on the way up, that's one way to test whether the snow has changed relative to what you tested.
Also, those beacons aren't much use if you expose 3/4 of your party at the same time on the way down. I'm sure that Cody and co had a very good handle on the hazard and were perfectly safe in doing so, but for the rest of us it's a good idea to only expose one skier at a time, both climbing and descending (see: 4/20/13 Sheep Creek avalanche for an example of not limiting exposure on the ascent).
With that said, see avalanche.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/06_ISSW_Simenhois.pdf if you want to geek out on the test they used.
Great episode!
great stuff Cody! loving the series!!
that was great!
awesome summit !!
Omg, great to have you and Bjarne BACK! Headed out to ski today, this is great! 😀👍🙏
That’s like right in my back yard! There was a crazy big avalanche there last year.
Love the videos man! Keep it up!
Love the new animation at the beginning!!! Love it!
OMG Definitely one off my favourite s . What a great run. Keep it coming guyssss...
Love the map addition!
Great episode Fifty Crew! Well done!
Timp is such a great mountain, for literally everything. Backcountry skiing a plenty. An actual ski resort. Hiking, climbing, mountain biking and caving. And it is literally at the edge of the city. You're no more than a 20 or 30 minute drive away from ANYTHING on Timp.
Awesome video. As an East coast skier I enjoyed watching you guys ski that run out. That looks like it belongs in NH. Come knock out Tucks and Huntington soon!
oooh ... I really like the fancy new map at the beginning! Great stuff as always!
You're killin it bud. Keep it up! vicarious living at it's best
This was a nice surprise for the day!
Can't believe I waited so long to finally start watching these!
Always stoked for a fresh episode of The FIFTY! Peace, love and powder!
what a great day, thats livin' people!
So glad this is continuing.
This is unexpected but extremely well recieved. Love dis series
Thank you!
That was great! Thanks! I’m super stoked to see what’s next.
Best episode yet. Really connected with this one.
Thanks for this...I was in withdrawl. All better now!
I binged the 2019 runs in just a few days last week. Loved em. Another great vid to start off 2020. Gonna be so difficult to wait for each vid to be posted now.... tho obviously not as difficult as doing the runs themselves haha. Keep up the good work, team
Really enjoying watching the progress. Thanks for posting. Hello from the UK.
Yewwww!!! It's back!
Really gorgeous timelapse at 2:10, Bjarne :D
Love this! I've stood on top of the north peak twice on skis, but have yet to get Cold Fusion.
Just finished the last video from last year, then this pops up. I thought I was going to be waiting a while. Train journeys from work just improved.
Also I love the new way you lay out your route. That's rad
love it man, I don't look forward to much these days but as always, I am pumped to see you on skis.
One of the best videos in the series so far - the time lapse shots are fantastic. And the rest too. Well done!
That was an absolutely beautiful line/location even with the snow looking a little blasted. Like the unpretentious good nature skiers too! Nice.
Enjoying the new format. Loving the stats on the climb and descent. Basically everything you guys do is 💯.
I appreciate the 3d map graphics, it's good context for what we'll see in the video.
These just keep getting better
All the best tours end with a danger trail!
A hugely funny episode. Thanks Cody
Just found this series and watched all the episodes in 1 day...oops! They are so inspiring and entertaining to watch! Keep up the good work and be safe:)
Picked a plumb! Cold Fusion in powder conditions with low hazard. Outstanding.
Besides de great footage and editing, I guess Bjarne always finds the right tune to enjoy the whole experience. Great work guys. Thank you. Cheers from Maui!
Every morning I get to wake up to that beaut. Cold Fusion is my favorite route on that mtn. Classic.
Not yet. Let’s ski it!
Cody I'm glad you made it to my neck of the woods! This line is AMAZING ... love the Utah bushwhacking. Look out for that Scrub Oak 😆
Welcome to Utah my friend
Nice to see the Go Fast Camper still part of the 50 adventure! Great series!!
absolute legend Cod!!!
Cody freaking out about the single track back to the car LOL. That looks like Vermont Tree Skiing if I do say so myself.
Ok the new route visualization is DOPE!!
Love that 3D animation
