The FIFTY - 37/50 - The Family that Shreds Together...

  • Every line has a crux. The hardest part of the journey that puts up the biggest obstacle to a line's completion. Sometimes that crux is an ice climb, a bushwhack or navigating through hazardous avalanche terrains. Sometimes that crux comes in the form of something entirely outside of the mountains.
Near Revelstoke, British Columbia lies an ultra-classic, oft skied, powder hounding run called "7 Steps to Paradise". It's the first run most people ski when visiting Roger's Pass for the first time. So for Cody, the crux in this line isn't on the mountain itself, but lies in the new son he and his professional skier wife have brought into the world and the challenges that motherhood and fatherhood bring to a couple of professional skiers.
Starring Elyse Saugstad, Greg Hill and photographer Zoya Lynch. This is line 37 of 50 completed by Cody Townsend in his project to ski all 50 of "The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America", from the book of the same name.

Just want to say that I love The Fifty Project because you turn around, because you put your family and your life first.
You know why? I'll tell you: because that's what the majority of us do and The Fifty is what the majority of us will never do. So we watch it through you. I intend to live for as well and as long as I can enjoy this sweet planet. And I wish for the people who broadcast me a chill evening, such as yourself, to do likewise.
The RedBull death defying brigade have always been impressive yet always alienating. Whereas The Fifty from start to finish is just damn enjoyable to watch.

My wife and I raised our kids in north Texas where there are no mountains. However, we made adventure a priority in our lives by taking them hiking, rafting, and skiing in the Colorado Rockies and the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. We are all different people because of that and I definitely know our kids appreciate the heck out of it. Awesome job being adventure parents!

Well done both. As a 48 yr old with 2 teenage girls your life and goals change but it’s still great. Being happy getting out, cruising the pow. Won’t be long before the little nugget is pizza’ing down the greens and you’ll love it more than I can explain. There’s no doubt you could both ski every line in the fifty but if you don’t that’s just life.

Our baby we had in March had reflux (colic) and even three months in, she was waking up, I kid you not, every 20-25 minutes every night, 6 hour witching *hour, no naps unless you wore her and rocked her. Luckily all I gave up was drinking instead of the outdoors. Mostly thanks to my amazing wife being understanding and us tag teaming it. Now at 7 months our daughter is passed that stage and we are having a blast. I wish this episode came out back then it would have helped a lot to see I wasn’t the only one struggling to navigate the new life arena. But again thank you for putting so much real life into these. Im sure there’s some other new Dads hanging their skis for the season that this will mean a lot to. Cheers and congrats on becoming a Dad!

I certainly get it and truly respect the perspective presented here (and also the sleep factor with a new born is no joke.).

My son (28 today) is my absolute favorite mountaineering and ski mountaineering partner. He was born and raised in the Eastern Sierra and started b/c skiing with me at 5 months old. (He was a really sturdy kid, being 11 1/2 pounds, 24" at birth.) Did his first overnight b/c ski tour at 4, his first three day trip at 10, and his first roped ice climb at 13. I have 3 daughters, too, and growing up connected to nature and challenging themselves in the b/c has made them exceptional humans. I was able to spend a total of 9 days with them over three trips backpacking in the last 6 weeks. We come from the earth and need to know that in our bones.
(It may be the last thing you want to think of now, but I recommend having another kid. The family dynamic is so much more rich with siblings.)
