"In my opinion" there isn't going to be a manga / anime that can make a storyline as good as one piece. The problem is, it would be bad to miss any arcs in one piece because they are all cohesive. One Piece is known for its world building. For example, one character from the first arc may appear in the later arcs.
Not just a character either, but changes in the world that happened 3 or more arcs ago will matter for the future, Oda has pretty much created a living breathing world in One PIece.
Yeah it's all really cohesive like an arc a lot of people skipped for some reason, skypiea, had a lot of small foreshadowing in it and the whole luffy beats a God too

I started watching One Piece last December and got caught up right before 1070 Aired. It’s definitely a long sit down and takes a lot of free time away, but I can say without a doubt my only regret is that I didn’t start watching it sooner. Yes the characters are wierd and unique is more deep and can go dark but thats the idea Oda the creator wanted to make something unique goofy and fun from other mangas/animes is long but is worth it world building is amazing the story 10/10 and he needed it this goofy world for hes Toon Force power to work properly. Hearing you say you watched the first 30 episodes broke my heart as a OP fan. Another few episodes and you would have been at the first really hype moment of the series. The part that many people say made them absolutely fall in love with the series.

I was a One Piece hater, but after watching Gear 5 I decided to watch the Live Action on Netflix and I was sold. 2 months later I'm caught up with the anime. Best decision I've made in my adult life.

One Piece aint too long, its too short, it aint long enough. You need to start watching it, *from the beginning,* from Episode 1. Everybody has different points where they start liking One Piece, some ep 1, some ep 25, some ep 100, but you gotta start from the beginning. It's the only reasonable advice I can give as someone who's been watching/reading it for 20 years.

Oda is only a bit older than me. We both grew up with Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, etc. And those cartoon elements run throughout One Piece. Is a cartoon not an utterly free animation style? Whatever the artist dreams can be drawn. Luffy is just like that. He's completely free to fight however he wants now. Freedom is one of the founding pillars of One Piece along with dreams Starting with Super Sayian all shounen power ups were out of rage moments. Oda didn't want that with Gear 5.
Apparently Oda, the creator of One Piece was growing tired with traditional serious anime fights and integrated what he loved about looney tunes animation in his days into the fights, I can tell he was super happy to get to gear 5th.

As a side note you guys should know that it was actually the author Oda-sensei that came up with the idea to make Gear Fifth have a cartoon physics based style. He drew it that way in the manga a year ago when this was first revealed and they did an amazing job of animating it with Warner Bros in this episode. I've also been waiting since 2022 for this episode. One Piece is my favorite anime and I can confirm that Oda is a master of foreshadowing and storytelling. This series has been going for more than 26 years and Oda has actually been hinting and foreshadowing the Sun God and Joyboy related info since the beginning.
If you do start, I would recommend from the beginning because there are small details from the beginning they will come back later in the future that will be really important to the story and make some parts. More sad or more exciting I have watched from the beginning the first few episodes were OK but then after I got to our long park I was so hyped and I couldn’t stop watching. It was now my favorite anime after that. Haha But I feel like this anime is one of those animes it makes you feel happy it has beautiful scenery and hearing them always have fun and do crazy things together. It’s not like any other animes I’ve seen and how they put so many details into everything and to make stuff, come back into the future of the show even at the beginning, making back stories short, but then coming back in the future with the details that were hidden before , they put every detail they have just to make the story greater watching this anime as an OG fan it’s like I’m having the time of my life just watching this every fight is like the most type thing I’ve seen in my life and I will be rolling on the ground with excitement I can’t help but laugh whenever seeing such a goofy thing and oh fan , small details that we’re still waiting for till this day or from the hundreds This anime has come along way, and I feel like it will be one of the most well known for a long time even after finishing it completely people still come back years later, just to watch it❤ But if you do consider watching the anime, I bet you would love it❤

Oda been wanting to this forever. The manga chapter was fire but he was seeing this whole fight in motion bc it's absolute Looney Tunes chaos and is probably happy as fuck with it bc the panels are drawn for the motion and music...and he got what he wanted, living the dream.

Its like a cartoon because Gear 5 basically makes him into a cartoon character. It increases his freedom with rubber for him to do whatever he wants with his imagination. He’s laughing because thats what the form does to him. “Awakening” your devil fruit, specifically a Zoan devil fruit(Zoan Devil fruits turn you into an animal or specific being), makes you take on the personality of said animal/being the fruit is. Nika (Joyboy) has a body like rubber and was known to bring laughter to people. Thus, when Luffy died he “awakened” his fruit and it caused him to take on the form of Nika. You can only “Awaken” your fruit if your body and mind become completely in tune with your devil fruit. Luffy was in tune in both body and mind. He just needed to be basically killed for it to finally “awaken”. So in that form, Luffy basically has toon force. The only limit to his ability is his own imagination
I don't think Nika is Joyboy. I think Joyboy is the previous user of the Human Human fruit. Nika is the actual being the Zoan Devil Fruit turns the person into. (All my thoughts, haven't read the manga so I could be wrong. Just from what everybody in the anime has said.
Fun fact it's only 380 or so hours to watch the entire one piece series to current releases. That's 16 days. Easy to break up into segments to catch up quickly.
The one big thing none of us ever expected was this transformation, even Oda thought us fans would hate it, but coming from the childhood I had watching Tom and Jerry, Flintstones, and Looney Tunes... when I read this in the manga, and now seeing it animated. All I can say is Luffy is living up to the name Joyboy, from beginning to end I was smiling and laughing. As for when does it get good.... it's hard to say, because for me I was hooked after Arlong Park (as I know many who are the same) yet others said it was Water 7, or Alabasta, or even further arcs before they were hooked. What I would suggest for getting into it is One Pace it cuts out filler.... though there is not a lot of filler, the problem that most find with the anime is the pacing especially looking at one of the arcs that was one of the best but felt so long. Or if you want to consume it faster there is always the manga itself where the pacing is great. And one last thing is the way you two are and how you argue is amazing and if you do react to One Piece especially now I expect an explosion for you two, feast as we feast but go back and get the context at the same time.
So much props to you guys for recognizing that OP is great. The story line is the best watch the adventure you won't notice the many episodes. This animation is really the goat. There's so many moments in this series that will have you guys so excited. 😊😊 watch One Piece yall missing out!
The lightning is a completely different power but it's a power that's influenced by your state of mind so him being in gear 5 probably puts him in a state of mind that make the lightning much stronger

EVERY Devil Fruit has an Awakened form of the power. Not everyone can get the fruit to evolve while they possess the powers, but this was him FINALLY getting to his evolved fruit status. The evolution of the fruit allows you to not just change yourself, but the environment and others around you. As the decades go by, One Piece has evolved from basic cartoon graphics to full circle anime movie quality graphics.
The big reveal of his fruit is that he isn't just rubber, he's a God that has the powers of ToonForce. Basically Luffy can do anything limited by his imagination and acts according to the animation basics of cruch, stretch and exageration. He's all sorts of broken.

Dudes, I can really feel y'all's hesitation about starting from Ep. 1. That is a daunting task ahead of you. For real, the whole of the East Blue arc is mainly set-up of the world and the Strawhat crew. Mostly comedy with a dash of action and adventure. It's very lighthearted fun adventuring up until the early 100s. I would rely on the One Piece abridged series to do a basic catch up and go back for more detail when you so choose. After Alabasta it ebbs and flows with each new arc. The tension builds til crescendo of epic boss fight then it goes back to goofy fun again. And repeat. (That formula changes after the time skip though) As to the animation... as you can see, it gets better. (For Gear 5 the OP team had help and consultation from the WB Looney Tunes animators) The animators have had over 20 years of practice with trial and error. I'll admit it's very basic and cartoony in the beginning because OP was just beginning but you can definitely see how it progresses year after year and arc after arc. You do what you do, guys. I just implore you not to judge an epic tale such as One Piece by the first 30 or 40 episodes. That's barely flipping the cover open.
Gear 5 has the power of applying cartoon logic and is only limited to his own imagination while everyone else is bound by normal laws of physics. The reason the animation is "goofy" is symbolic to his freedom and his imagination.

If y’all actually planning on watching one piece tho but don’t got time, I highly recommend One Pace. Depending on the time u have, it summarizes eps a lot and removes unnecessary content like the kaido vs luffy flashback in this 1071 ep. You can also watch the ones where it super summarizes it where arcs that are 50-100 eps long are shortened into a 2-4 hr episode. Lastly, it might be a stretch but apparently according to Oda sensei himself, u can literally start one piece on this ep (more specifically he meant this chapter in the manga). Idk if he cookin sumn up for people who will do that but that’s just what he said (that’s where the memes of all of one piece up till now was just filler, build up, etc. came from)

The problem is, it would be bad to miss any arcs in one piece because they are all cohesive. One Piece is known for its world building. For example, one character from the first arc may appear in the later arcs.
Not just a character either, but changes in the world that happened 3 or more arcs ago will matter for the future, Oda has pretty much created a living breathing world in One PIece.
The maincharacters actually change the world around them as they travel, feel really big when you watch back the whole saga
Yeah it's all really cohesive like an arc a lot of people skipped for some reason, skypiea, had a lot of small foreshadowing in it and the whole luffy beats a God too

Episode 1071 is a near perfect adaptation 🥺 (My only issue is them re-using the same animation cut 3 times, instead of doing somethign different each time)

I started watching One Piece last December and got caught up right before 1070 Aired. It’s definitely a long sit down and takes a lot of free time away, but I can say without a doubt my only regret is that I didn’t start watching it sooner. It’s my favorite manga/anime to ever exist even trumping dragonball for me
Yes the characters are wierd and unique is more deep and can go dark but thats the idea Oda the creator wanted to make something unique goofy and fun from other mangas/animes is long but is worth it world building is amazing the story 10/10 and he needed it this goofy world for hes Toon Force power to work properly. You need to start watching it, *from the beginning,* from Episode 1.
Everybody has different points where they start liking One Piece, some ep 1, some ep 25, some ep 100, but you gotta start from the beginning.
It's the only reasonable advice I can give as someone who's been watching/reading it for 20 years.

Oda is only a bit older than me. We both grew up with Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, etc. And those cartoon elements run throughout One Piece. Is a cartoon not an utterly free animation style? Whatever the artist dreams can be drawn. Luffy is just like that. He's completely free to fight however he wants now. Freedom is one of the founding pillars of One Piece along with dreams
Starting with Super Sayian all shounen power ups were out of rage moments. Oda didn't want that with Gear 5.
Apparently Oda, the creator of One Piece was growing tired with traditional serious anime fights and integrated what he loved about looney tunes animation in his days into the fights, I can tell he was super happy to get to gear 5th.

As a side note you guys should know that it was actually the author Oda-sensei that came up with the idea to make Gear Fifth have a cartoon physics based style. He drew it that way in the manga a year ago when this was first revealed and they did an amazing job of animating it with Warner Bros in this episode. I've also been waiting since 2022 for this episode. One Piece is my favorite anime and I can confirm that Oda is a master of foreshadowing and storytelling. This series has been going for more than 26 years and Oda has actually been hinting and foreshadowing the Sun God and Joyboy related info since the beginning.

If you do start, I would recommend from the beginning because there are small details from the beginning they will come back later in the future that will be really important to the story and make some parts. More sad or more exciting I have watched from the beginning the first few episodes were OK but then after I got to our long park I was so hyped and I couldn’t stop watching. It was now my favorite anime after that. Haha
But I feel like this anime is one of those animes it makes you feel happy it has beautiful scenery and hearing them always have fun and do crazy things together. It’s not like any other animes I’ve seen and how they put so many details into everything and to make stuff, come back into the future of the show even at the beginning, making back stories short, but then coming back in the future with the details that were hidden before , they put every detail they have just to make the story greater watching this anime as an OG fan it’s like I’m having the time of my life just watching this every fight is like the most type thing I’ve seen in my life and I will be rolling on the ground with excitement I can’t help but laugh whenever seeing such a goofy thing and oh fan , small details that we’re still waiting for till this day or from the hundreds

Its like a cartoon because Gear 5 basically makes him into a cartoon character.
It increases his freedom with rubber for him to do whatever he wants with his imagination. He’s laughing because thats what the form does to him. “Awakening” your devil fruit, specifically a Zoan devil fruit(Zoan Devil fruits turn you into an animal or specific being), makes you take on the personality of said animal/being the fruit is. Nika (Joyboy) has a body like rubber and was known to bring laughter to people. Thus, when Luffy died he “awakened” his fruit and it caused him to take on the form of Nika.
You can only “Awaken” your fruit if your body and mind become completely in tune with your devil fruit. Luffy was in tune in both body and mind. He just needed to be basically killed for it to finally “awaken”.
So in that form, Luffy basically has toon force. The only limit to his ability is his own imagination

I don't think Nika is Joyboy. I think Joyboy is the previous user of the Human Human fruit. Nika is the actual being the Zoan Devil Fruit turns the person into. (All my thoughts, haven't read the manga so I could be wrong. Just from what everybody in the anime has said.

Fun fact it's only 380 or so hours to watch the entire one piece series to current releases. That's 16 days. Easy to break up into segments to catch up quickly.
The one big thing none of us ever expected was this transformation, even Oda thought us fans would hate it, but coming from the childhood I had watching Tom and Jerry, Flintstones, and Looney Tunes... when I read this in the manga, and now seeing it animated. All I can say is Luffy is living up to the name Joyboy, from beginning to end I was smiling and laughing.
As for when does it get good.... it's hard to say, because for me I was hooked after Arlong Park (as I know many who are the same) yet others said it was Water 7, or Alabasta, or even further arcs before they were hooked.
What I would suggest for getting into it is One Pace it cuts out filler.... though there is not a lot of filler, the problem that most find with the anime is the pacing especially looking at one of the arcs that was one of the best but felt so long. Or if you want to consume it faster there is always the manga itself where the pacing is great.
And one last thing is the way you two are and how you argue is amazing and if you do react to One Piece especially now I expect an explosion for you two, feast as we feast but go back and get the context at the same time.
So much props to you guys for recognizing that OP is great. The story line is the best watch the adventure you won't notice the many episodes. This animation is really the goat. There's so many moments in this series that will have you guys so

The evolution of the fruit allows you to not just change yourself, but the environment and others around you. Dudes, I can really feel y'all's hesitation about starting from Ep. 1. That is a daunting task ahead of you. For real, the whole of the East Blue arc is mainly set-up of the world and the Strawhat crew. Mostly comedy with a dash of action and adventure. It's very lighthearted fun adventuring up until the early 100s. I would rely on the One Piece abridged series to do a basic catch up and go back for more detail when you so choose.
After Alabasta it ebbs and flows with each new arc. The tension builds til crescendo of epic boss fight then it goes back to goofy fun again. And repeat. (That formula changes after the time skip though)
As to the animation... as you can see, it gets better. (For Gear 5 the OP team had help and consultation from the WB Looney Tunes animators) The animators have had over 20 years of practice with trial and error. I'll admit it's very basic and cartoony in the beginning because OP was just beginning but you can definitely see how it progresses year after year and arc after arc.
You do what you do, guys. I just implore you not to judge an epic tale such as One Piece by the first 30 or 40 episodes. That's barely flipping the cover open.
Gear 5 has the power of applying cartoon logic and is only limited to his own imagination while everyone else is bound by normal laws of physics. The reason the animation is "goofy" is symbolic to his freedom and his imagination.

The point is its to make you smile, and you smiled a lot like a lot of us long time OP fans. It may not be as powerfully hype as SS1 but its hype is different. Most max transformations for anime MCs are power based, this was just hype for the freedom it represents. Its unique.

Depending on the time u have, it summarizes eps a lot and removes unnecessary content like the kaido vs luffy flashback in this 1071 ep. You can also watch the ones where it super summarizes it where arcs that are 50-100 eps long are shortened into a 2-4 hr episode. Lastly, it might be a stretch but apparently according to Oda sensei himself, u can literally start one piece on this ep (more specifically he meant this chapter in the manga).
