While tanks and fighters tend to win public attention, the fighting in Ukraine has done a lot to remind us of the critical role played by the infantry. And to survive and thrive on the battlefield, the infantry in Ukraine rely on their armoured personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles to enable to enable movement and provide fire support.
Those vehicles, so critical to both sides have, however, been lost in extreme numbers - with no vehicle on the Russian side having suffered more visually confirmed losses than the BMP-2.
Now, it seems, the floodgates are opening on the supply of Western IFVs to Ukraine. In this video I look at these vehicles, their employment in Ukraine, and suggest that despite being lost in large numbers - that they will remain critical in the fighting to come.

I mispeak and call RUSI the "uniform services institute" - It is correctly (and has for the better part of two centuries) been the "united services institute."
As always, keep in mind that while visually confirmed loss data is among the best data we have for setting loss baselines, it is limited and should be interpreted with care.
To enable some of the analysis in this video, some data treatment was done - for example, entries for destroyed BMPs where the variant could not be determined were divided, pro-rata
Regarding the narrative - while the BMP-1 had a major impact, I should note that other IFV type vehicles preceded it - with perhaps the most significant being the German HS.30.
In this video, I call the Stryker an American vehicle due to its service. The vehicle has Canadian DNA and is built there

Just to repeat a point in the corrections and caveats section before I'm blacklisted from a country, I wanted to note that while I call the Stryker an American vehicle (in American service) - I acknowledge its Canadian DNA and manufacture. Also from the caveats that's worth putting here - while the BMP-1 had a major impact on the development of AFVs everywhere, I do want to call out the West German HS 30 for beating it into service with a similar concept. Another editing flub was calling RUSI the "uniform" services rather than "united" services institute for lord know what reason and then missing it in editing.
There would be more caveats and notes (such as noting Czech production of the BMP in addition to USSR figures) but I ran out of text allowance. The biggest caveat is to note, as always, that loss data from an ongoing war is subject to a significant degree of uncertainty.
And apologies to the Germans in the audience - Early in the video I say SdKfz 241, instead of the correct 251. Missed that in editing.

As an average video game player, I will say tech advantage and mass advantage are nothing against 12 hoverbikes or 11 winged monsters that can fling lethal projectiles and turn with infinite G-force.

Bulgarian General asks Russian General why their vehicles are so horrendous in side. The Russian replys :
- we wont our soldiers to be afraid from the vehicles, not the enemy. When the doors open they will gladly attack becouse they ware already in hell.
if you go to war however you will prefer russian equipment since if it breaks you can fix it with a hamer, wire and blow torch.
Nato's equipment cant be easyly fixed and is more succeptable to problems. Just found aout how unreliable is the Bradly and was shocked. I tought they fixed it already. after all it is 80's tech ...
I'd go one further on Stryker in that it's really a Swiss design (MOWAG Piranha) laundered through Canada by way of a US prime (GM, later GDLS-C via LAV) and eventually turned into a US sourced solution (Canada no longer manufacturing Strykers, though some parts are still sourced there).

@@shaider1982 BTW it technically did have sense. US mark every equipment as type: like Heavy Tank, military so M and number in line. So because lot of stuff were only reintroduced during WW2, they all get M1 what lead to hilarious situation that US have almost everything called M1. Abrams is somewhat exception as US reset counter on armed vehicles in the 80's.
The WWII example of "the American M1 came under fire and soldiers fired back with M1s, M1s, and M1s" was absolute gold!

In that context, it makes perfect sense, and if you abbreviate it by omitting details ("Use your rifle!") rather than by omitting generalities and keeping _only_ the details ("Use your M1!"), it's generally unambiguous.
There seems to some "law" on RUclips that videos should be kept to 10-15mins long as that is the attention span of most users. Why is it then that so many people, myself included, seem perfectly happy to sit through hour long PowerPoints by some Aussie? IMHO, it's because they tick every box of being informative, engaging, includes accurate data, and most importantly, humorous. Thanks Perun for your continued delivery of such excellent content. I have yet to watch one of your videos without being educated further on some subject that I thought I was already pretty well informed about.

Having multiple items called "M1" or whatever is not really a problem in the US Army. We all know what is what and no one confuses M9 bayonets with M9 pistols. That said, the army has gotten much better about it in recent years.

The Bradley compliments tanks when used in combined formations. During Desert Storm the optics on the Bradley were better and conducive to identifying targets for the Abrams in a open desert environment. They play a tank destroyer role with their ATGMs at ranges in excess of an MBT's main gun.
The mounted infantry can be deployed to provide security or screen terrain while the Brads and Abrams provide overwatch. Bradleys can also be loaded up with supplies to sustain the infantry in the fight. Think ammo, water, rations, and Javelins. IFVs aren't tanks but they allow the infantry to keep up with the tanks and if a BMP or T-72 pops up they have the means to deal with the threat.

Usually I don't comment on videos; I feel I need to say that your videos are appreciated. I both thoroughly enjoyed the content and the presentation. I also appreciate that you seem to deliver the content with the concept of biases in mind and take that into account therein. There's a lot of people who would rather provide information with a heavy dose of either emotional or patriotic bias, whether aware or unaware of it. So I figured instead of being a silent observer I would throw my two cents in and let you know that I appreciate your content.

Excellent points! It is hard to take as reliable a RUclips channel talking about the war that has a giant Ukrainian flag as its background. While it is certainly possible and reasonable to believe the Ukrainians are on the right in this fight, If your bias is just so overwhelming that your information has to be taken with a grain of salt are you really anything other than propaganda?
@@stevewhite3424 I would articulate it a bit differently. There is no debate IMO that the Russians war is immoral, unjust, unjustifiable, simply evil. It is not 'biased' to acknowledge that. But we can get carried away by the emotion of that and lose sight of reality. So it is very valuable to have someone like Perun present an objective, impartial view of the facts, and leave the morality of the situation for the viewer / other commentators.

M113 is state of the art WW2.
The original FMC tech drawings date from 1950. Basically the entire design came from thinking about WW2 and deciding what would make the perfect APC. Fully tracked. Armoured roof. Ramp access so troops don't have to jump over the sides.

The M113 reminds me of a D-Day landing craft, made to go on land, through semi-Rasputitsa conditions, and be fragmentation-proof from all aspects while buttoned up.
Interesting take on the Bradley vs Abrams in desert storm. ( I assume an earlier version of Abrams) There was a similar juxtaposition between the A-10 and F-111 in desert storm. According to a post-war DOD analysis report, there were far fewer F-111s in theater yet they had far more armor kills than the A-10. The F-111 was near retirement and the A-10 was still only middle age.
Part of the explanation was the weather in the first week was particularly bad and overcast, the F-111 being an all weather aircraft and having a superior IR sensor package. A-10 variants of that time were visual conditions only. Just after sunset the Iraqi tanks would emit a bunch of IR making them easy targets for guided bombs.
(F-117 were used to hunt anti-aircraft systems making armor hunting more practical.)
The F-111 was simply the better aircraft. The A-10 is merely cheaper.
A number of Iraqi generals made a big deal out of their use of thermal decoys (Half buried metal sheets with a small fire underneath). I imagine that the burden of proof would be a lot lower for a indirect engagement compared to a visual system than the A-10 requires. Not to disregard your point about superior sensors on the later models of the F-111 though, that said a lot of the older models of the F-111 remained in service unmodernised for a surprisingly long period.

I’m an ex-journalist and, as I was listening to this show, it occurred to me (several times) not just that there was some extremely well-researched information but, more impressive, the sheer volume of it. I was also as impressed with the data and analysis you rejected, although I would have been interested in hearing some of the theories you refused to go into for want of verification. I think this is my favorite channel at the moment. Military analysis isn't my favorite subject, but having long well-researched videos more than makes up for that.
As my friend, who is an active serviceman in Ukrainian military once said, there are two things to say about BMPs. The first: there is nothing more exhilarating and satisfying than an ATGM or RPG rocket narrowly missing your BMP, while you are sitting on top of it, the adrenaline goes through the roof and you're just screaming "YEAH, BASTARDS, LEARN TO AIM". The second: there is nothing worse than imagining being burned alive in one of those things after being hit, that thing comes up in his nightmares every single night.
There was a video recently on reddit where Ukrainian team collected remains of soldiers inside destroyed m113. Basically the body of a driver got obliterated into pieces of a golf ball size (parft of a chin with beard 3-5 cm is all I can identify as “human”) Terrifying.

@@Kayfear Like the refurbishment of tanks in WWii that had their crewed killed but the tank was usable. Imagine climbing down in a Sherman to scoop up and wash away body pieces in every nook and corner, hoping you don't miss any...
So in a nutshell, IFVs and APCs are basically like a seatbelt in a car - in the event of a crash, it's not a guarantee that you will walk away but it'll significantly improve your chances of survival.

I was an airborne Ranger, which is very light infantry. I can assure you there are times I want armor to do a job, even though personally I was always most comfortable in my element (quietly in the woods, preferably dark). I noticed each MOS is most comfortable doing what they’re trained to do.

I was a RWS gunner in Afghanistan, and I can say that it does feel like a game sometimes in a weird way. So you always had yo remind yourself that this is real life. It's definitely safer than hanging out of the hatch
The Bradley is a beast, less so for its firepower, and more for its extremely well-designed suit of sensors and comms letting it relay information to friendly forces and artillery.

Yes, the 1990s were high threat environment both in Russia and Ukraine. The tank repair factory here in Lviv was guarded so poorly that the neighbourhood boys sneaked into it on a dare on multiple occasions. Worst case they would meet a security guard with a shotgun loaded with salt instead of buckshot.

I mean that quote was a joke. Quite obviously IFV is neither of those. Burton was a idiot who demand tests for something army already know, because he couldn't understand role of new at the time IFV. Movie though place him as protagonist actually place hints pointing that he was wrong. Like when one of soldiers correct him regard procedure. That they test scale of damage with increasingly stronger charges, not if it survive obvious overkill. Or when he test Romanian RPG on doors, one of officers counter it with statement that those were strong doors (what is true. Ammo depo doors are usually heavily armored). Also no. Bradley didn't start as M113, it was always designed as counter to BMP. It is why commanding officer was triggered. Because program in fact did have overruns and they needed push in production something capable to counter it, even if they would correct known flaws later.

Zak, very true. The research level is top shelf with the tools at hand. The content is as detailed as could be done by a person with no military inside assistance. Educational for all and would make very good military reading for all countries armed forces .
Except in reality, 75% of those views are from people that aren't even subscribed. He's one of the few creators that never asks people to like and subscribe. While annoying, the reason people do that is because it works. Then again I'm also pretty sure Perun doesn't even monetize these videos so the guy clearly isn't motivated by money or overtly trying to grow his audience
At age 19, back in 1971, a few of us rode on top of an M113 on a reddish dirt road about 15 klicks east of Chu Lai SVietnam along the foothills. We had a couple wounded in the shell. F-4’s and saw-equipped Hueys kept NVA down while the 113’s extracted us.

The British Army did play with an APC in WW1. It was the MK IX tank, built to carry Infantry across no man's land in support of the tanks. They only built 34 of them before the war ended.

I can see why they gave up. Tanks were so unreliable back then that at the Battle of Amiens (1918) that finally broke the German Lines wide open, out of the 500 battle ready tanks that took part, only 6 tanks were still battle ready by day 4. The infantry was suppose to complete phase 3 with infantry-carrying Mark V tanks but in the end they choose to not even bother. They had to continue the Hundred Days Offensive with armored car battalions and cavalry divisions in place of the tanks.
Interesting. It makes sense. I hadn't heard of it but haven't invested tons of time studying WW1 outside of late US Army involvement. Namely the US 37th Division 135th MG Battalion from August - Nov 11th 1918. Thanks for the info and education. 👍
The numbers on Russian command vehicle losses are really remarkable. Given that those vehicles are generally used at the battalion level and higher, there generally won't be that many of them out there. Those numbers probably represent an extremely high percentage of the ones that would have been deployed in Ukraine.
Also commanding officers, often quite senior, ride around in those vehicles. So it is an interesting question how many of them (senior Russian officers) are still in the fight.

It is because those tend to be mounted by officers. And so are both high priority target and because negative morale were commonly in the danger zone trying rely other units to assault. Lesson. Having distinct command vehicles is ridiculous.
A command vehicle may be easier to detect from space, as they likely transmit different radio patterns compared to a grunt APC .
It demonstrates excellence in targeting by UAF, from identification, through tasking, to execution.
Those vehicles shouldn't be in danger, they should be safely behind a screen considering how important they are. Which make the loss numbers even more mind blowing and points at severe improper tactical use.

I would like to add just one small thing: Technically the german HS 30, armed with a 20mm autocannon in a rotating turret, which started development around 1955, was the first IFW. It was without doubt a terrible vehicle, which got replaced by the Spz Marder about ten years after introduction but it has all the key characteristics of an IFW.

@@user-vt2cr8qd1b Most likely they would have had at least a couple of shrapnel injuries. What people don’t seem to get about IFVs is that they’re not there to make soldiers invulnerable. They exist mainly to transport troops at high speed while keeping them safe from small arms fire and shrapnel from artillery (or whatever else) exploding nearby, and some of them can take out enemy positions/vehicles or suppress enemy fire. Sure, they’ll get destroyed sometimes. But you know what else will get destroyed? Soldiers charging at enemy positions under machine gun and artillery fire.

Former mech infantry soldier here. The job of the mech infantry is not primarily to keep up; that is secondary, their main job is to keep infantry off of the tanks.They are a stiff arm that keeps dangerous elements at range so the tanks can knock them out. Infantry can be absolutely deadly to armor via both anti tank weapons and using a radio to call in artillery or air. When a tank gets to a position that does not have a clear view and therefor no idea of what is up ahead, the mech infantry can clear that area which will allow the armor to push on. Battlefields are not flat; they rise and fall. Mech infantry can clear those rises where the other side of that rise is unknown. When armor has to take a stationary position , which they often have to do, the mech infantry are able to keep infantry away from them.
"IFVs and APCs are getting destroyed *because* they work" is a would be a daring conclusion if it was backed up by anything less rigorous than a Perun analysis. I continue to appreciate your analyses, this channel has been phenomenally informative and a master class besides.
For the M113, there might be a Variant Ukraine might want. The Mortar APC M106. It started with a 107mm and 81mm Mortar variant but was upgraded to a 120mm Variant. It isn't a Battle Taxi anymore but share the same Parts as a M113. so having 2000 M113 and 100 M106 would be a great mobility bonus, even when the M113 is slow. And as a German: We got 350 Marder on the Scrapyard, waiting for scrapping. They need to be refurbished, but they can be putt back into combat condition. But it will take time. That are the Marders when German Politicians say: They come from the Industrie, they are practically already sold off and waiting for their refurbished Shipment to Greece or to be scrapped. This year 100 Marders were be slated to go to Greece.
Lithuania supplied 10 self-propelled Tampella 120mm mortars on M113 chassis. There is a video somewhere of one of them being used in the battlefield.

When the whole "Spare Marders" article came out, people fail to mention a majority of those Marders were scrapped in 2014, it is a miracle Germany even had spare marders to send.

AFU requests a lot of APC/IFV not so much because they need to recover from losses, but mainly because AFU expanded about 3x times since the start of the war.

No. Those are to recover from losses. Zaluzhny himself plainly stated in an interview a few weeks ago that to conduct a successful offensive toward Melitopol and eventually cut the land bridge would require of the west to provide AT LEAST 300 additional tanks, 700 IFVs/APCs and 500 artillery pieces (with all the corresponding ammo). If the Ukrainian ground forces really had ballooned to 3x their original size of around 3000 armored vehicles (all categories comprised), they should by far have that capability already. Instead, they are asking for brand new vehicles their crew will never be as potent with, in the current conditions, as the ones they were initially trained on, and will require a complete rebuilding of their logistical infrastructure. Go figure.

More IFV, 's from afar means more TDF given offensive capabilities.

8:35 The IFV is not only supporting the infantry, it's also the other way around, for example in obscured terrain, then the infantry leads. In mobile warfare both components are one system, they are supposed to move and fight together.

Germany actually had an ifv of sorts before the soviets did, it was called "Schützenpanzer lang", but it wasn't very successful due to its very many mechanical issues.
HS-30 Schützenpanzer Lang, but also Schützenpanzer Kurz (Hotchkiss).
Both entered service 2-3 years ahead of the BMP-1
Was about to write that, Germany had Panzergrenadiers in WW2, and afterwards it wanted to expand on the IFV-concepts.The Lang was a pretty terrible vehicles by most accords due to production and deasign issues, so hardly anyone remembers it, but it was the first^^

Even the development of the Marder started before the BMP-1 and there were prototypes before the Soviets even thought about the BMP. The BMP was an answer to the HS-30.
