I've been debating between starting a blog or a RUclips channel and I've dabbled in both for a few months now. What I found is that I have serious anxiety issues when it comes to showing up on camera and a blog seems more doable in terms of consistency for me. I don't think I am capable of creating good videos despite having ideas of what to talk about because scripting, recording and editing is a steep learning curve for me and I haven't overcome that hill yet. With RUclips, I deal with: 1. Anxiety 2. Resources(videos, images and music) + computer's ability 3. Editing(watching myself is not easy and going over the nuances of the video is fairly challenging) With blogging, I deal with: 1. Basic blogging learning curves like getting a domain(done), a theme(done), email collection(not done). 2. Depth of content(which I prefer over RUclips because of my fickle nature - I can go deeper and edit on the go even when the article has been published) 3. Website technicalities(I learned so much about genesis and child themes which was pretty easy) I am leaning towards a blog, currently because I feel that it gives me more freedom to create content because I can remove myself as in my image from the equation. I hope 2020 will be a good year for my blog!
There is a whole subset of folks that would not be able to get much out of a podcast without a transcript: those of us that don't process verbal information as well as visual information, people who are hearing impaired. I recommend providing transcripts if you are planning to do a podcast, or at the very least a list of important takeaways. I've actually ended up looking up things brought up in a podcast on youtube or just a google search b/c I was interested in it but was not able to process what they were about it, and needed to about it to understand it. That's why I so appreciate the content in Start Up Society, b/c it gives both.
Whoever came up with the idea to get the following two together is a PURE GENIUS! I’m a NEW RUclipsR (1 week in), a blogger, self published author, soon to be podcaster & soon to be motivational speaker! Just waiting on the moment when I can walk into all three of my part time jobs that provide me with income right now & say “So long, I’m on my way to being financially free and finally revealing my purpose in this world” 🙌🏽🙏🏽❤️
I just started my channel and am getting ready to post my 2nd video. I’m super happy with results so far with even just 1 video and I’m super grateful for all the information you’ve provided to help in this journey Gillian!!! Thank you!!
I’m really enjoying you branch out, Gillian, get out of your office, connect with other RUclipsrs, and become more relaxed. Can’t wait to see what another year brings!
Oh thank you for this. I remember Pat Flynn from 2009 way back when ehow offered the writer's compensation program. I then followed his website in 2010. I have read various blog posts over the years from his site. Thank you for this.
I'm setting up a home office soon and am so excited to finally have a quiet private space to start my channel. I already have 50 ideas for topics in my niche and am planning 10-15 min videos. I think I'm going to batch record. I can't wait to bring my unique to the platform.
Love this video always wondered which is better and today I got my answer depends on what you like or don't like. As for me I never thought of doing a RUclips channel my face is not meant for TV or in this case youtube, always loved the idea blogging and just recently thought about podcasting I have a few podcasts I follow and was always fascinated about doing one. I have no dates yet but definitely will be a news resolution with a deadline.
Personally, I believe that filming the podcast is VERY beneficial because I'm on RUclips many hours of the day and love the binge watch things at night. So I would much rather watch and listen to the podcast on RUclips, than sit in my bed and listen to a podcast. Plus I'm a visual person. I love to watch while listening to see expressions etc. I think you can grow both platforms (podcast channel and RUclips channel) so much faster by cross promoting the video & audio so much more too. I see the points you brought up in this video but I just never go onto apple podcast apps because I'm at home with my kids all day and rarely ever leave the house, although I could walk around with it on my phone just not as accessible for me.
Such a great video! I will be checking out how to start a podcast next! I just started my channel here on RUclips a few months ago, so I will wait a bit, but definitely something worth looking into. Thanks for sharing!
Just started my RUclips channel about 4 weeks ago and I’m 9 videos in ..I am an online clothing reseller. Gillian was a big influence on me. Pat is great to and I’m in the process of watching some of his videos. Thank you both for all the great content.
Thanks Gillian and your guest; nice insights and conversation. I am in the beginning stage with my RUclips adventure which ranges from informative videos (how to change a mower blade) to sights around town. I watch your videos to get your perspective on what works best. Thanks agsin.
I’ve been doing some research on Podcasting for a workshop I have to present, and having to want to push myself I happened on your video. I actually watched “Passive Income” while I was on Temporary Employment Hiatus (my term for Unemployed) 3 years ago. When I was Seeking to transition into something else; career wise. Good to see this now as it has ignited something in me. Oh by the way I did get a new job, but it is just paying the bills...no satisfaction just survival.
I know you're only really supposed to focus on one at a time, but now that I know how to run my YT channel, I'm starting to look into relaunching my CreationDepot podcast as well. It seems like a lot of content management, but now that I know how to batch content, it will still busy, but reasonable. My biggest hurdle right now is getting my audience together, and I think these are the two platforms I need to focus on to accomplish that.
I just started a video cast. I wanted to show my face, but introvert and don't want to get fancy for camera. So, now I'm trying to see how I can just speak. Like voice-over
Omg. Thank you so much for this video. I was getting super overwhelmed trying to figure out all the different platforms I need to start. I already have a RUclips channel so you’ve just helped me decide to keep the focus on RUclips and start working on podcasts in the near future. Super helpful. One follow up question: What about starting online (paid) courses? Where does that fall into the mix? Would you say start it now or after I have a certain number of subscribers? What’s the recommended roll out?
Thanks for this video. I was about to request that you talk about and show us how to start a podcast as I have been considering starting podcast before a youtube channel for a while now.
This was so helpful1 I've done a bit of both but I want to be consistent for 2020! Ive been thinking about wich to focus on. i think podcast for me with a few youtube videos for when i need to show somethign visual
Lovely insightful vid Gillian & to be interviewing Pat!! Woot woot. 😁Love you both as you've both coached me to get the courage to start an online business. This year I'm now keen to get a podcast up n live using all of your wonderful tips explained in the vid. Thus far... I'm the apprentice today and in the future I too hope to be the master..but its about STARTING and keep going with little steps. Looking fwd to tuning into your very cool podcast Gillian. It's been brilliant to watch you grow. Yay!! 😍
Totally loved this. I started my podcast on Soreaker, not any traction there. Who do you recommend as a great podcast host. I've been seeing a lot about Buzzsprout 🤷🏽♀️ Thank you.
The big problem with youtube is that your whole livelihood sits under Googles power to switch you off at any given moment. This may not seem like it could happen, but I wouldn't want to rely on an external force to keep food on the table
Loved this video! I hate being on any kind of camera. Super shy unless I am around specific ppl then I am out spoken super fun. So they are like you shy no way. I feel like I am 2 different ppl at times. Thank again for sharing super awesome. 💜🤗
Excited for this video! I’ve had a blog that I stopped posting to, the RUclips channel for several years, and am preparing to start my business soon... Podcasts, I think they are very cool, but I can wait! Thanks so much for sharing this Gillian (and Pat!) 💕💕xo
Good video. I found the audio difficult in the resonant room. When Pat turned his head to you, a word got dropped audibly. Individual mics would have been helpful.
There's quite a few people now who are successful putting a podcast on RUclips. The Creative Penn is a good example. Has this changed now in the last year and it's more accepted? Or is it still the same thing, where it may not work as well.
When it comes to youtube... why do people choose to create videos on Instagram or Facebook in addition to their RUclips or even post different but related videos on the other platforms? Is it to drive people to their other platforms or is it a monetization thing? Like would u recommend some1 starting with Instagram or Facebook videos before going to RUclips? Say if your content was beauty or fashion or travel related?
Great video! I think putting a podcast on RUclips is not a bad idea. I listen to a lot of RUclips videos when trying to sleep. I also like a couple of RUclips channels which are pretty much just podcasts on RUclips.
I am starting a travel blog and podcast about digital nomad, I wasn’t sure if I should have a separate channel for my travel blog and my zoom video podcast? I was going to post them on the same channel but I am worried about the RUclips algorithmAnd not sure if it will hurt my views if I put both my video podcast on the same channel as my travel blog, do you have any thoughts on that?
Loving the podcast suggestion!!! 🥰💖🤗 Especially the tip that there is a lot less competition for podcasts and longer listener retention, as well as authority building opportunity! Another great video Gillian! Thank-you!!!💖💖💖
Great info, but you got one thing wrong about audiences. I listen to podcasts on RUclips with a single slide up ALL the time, as do a lot of people. (Most Abraham Hicks videos are like that and they are wildly popular.) Of course no one is gonna sit there & watch a single slide like you said, but these days people often don’t sit and watch the video anyway. We have it on while driving, cleaning, showering, doing errands, etc. I often favor those kinds of videos, because I’m off the hook from having to stop everything else and watch my phone, and I can go about my day doing things while listening.
Great content. I stayed through the whole thing even though that audio was really bad. Jeez, if you can't get the boom mic closer, then use lavalier mics!
I have my own RUclips channel and my own blog and I will like to startup my own podcast! What is best hosting service solutions for free podcast creating on a iOS or iPadOS?
First of all if you're going to do this video maybe have a close to Mike and set up your voice echoing off the walls good sound is a must it's hard to listen to walls bouncing back and forth good luck
i've been a long time fan of Pat! when I first started I wanted to do a blog but after so much research I found it overwhelming so I started with a RUclips channel instead since it was easier to begin right away. Great video as always!!
I'm not as brave as try that simultaneously :) RUclips is sooo enough for me! Though eveybody say I should get IG. But it already depresses me to even think that I have to put that IG on my plate, it's already SOO full. So I'm just putting it away till I'm having more time to dedicate to it 😞
Same here! Everyone tells me start IG as well and try out other things, but I'm already having too much on my plate. Sooo putting it away till I have more time!

Oh thank you for this. I remember Pat Flynn from 2009 way back when ehow offered the writer's compensation program. I then followed his website in 2010. I have read various blog posts over the years from his site. Thank you for this.
I love the line ‘“You got to be a disaster at first.”. Thank - you!
That stood out to me too

Very thorough, and helpful, comparison of the mediums. Gave me things to think about that I hadn't previously.

Great content Gillian, just starting with podcasting ourselves, this was really useful and insightful!

I'd listen to your podcast Gillian. :)

That's fine. As long as you're creative in making your own content
