FX Airguns DRS Classic Deep Dive Testing and Tuning Techniques

  • The FX Airguns DRS platform including the DRS Classic and Pro is revolutionizing the airgun shooting experience. From the traditional firearm-like form factor of the FX DRS to the world-renowned precision FX is known for, the DRS design approach to airgun architecture has many airgunners (including myself) wondering what makes this thing tick? I was lucky enough to get one of the very first DRS platforms in the United States this past week. Needless to say I really and I mean REALLY dug into this airgun.
    A lot of the buzz has been around the over-the-barrel air reservoir, but there is so much more going on the inside of this airgun. After a week of tearing this thing apart and shooting a ton of different projectiles, the efficiency of this DRS valve has blown me away. Getting a ton of shots off a mere 220 bar fill, could this thing be the ULTIMATE prepper/survivalist PCP Airgun combo?
    When was the last time you measured the torque specs on your Airgun? You should! The FX DRS action is very similar to a Remington 700 clone. I’ve seen a huge difference it playing with exact torque changes on action screws ranging from my 6.5 CM to .22LRs. This same technique can now be used with the FX DRS platform!
    The FX DRS Classic paired with the Lil’ Foot Mobile Compressor from DonnyFL just I was able to fill the 220cc-ish reservoir and the plenum is sooooo fast to get 30-40 shots per fill depending on ammo. If I had to hand pump this Airgun it would totally be doable.
    I have been shooting slugs with ramped-up FX PCP airguns for so long I forgot the pure enjoyment of shooting pellets. The level of pellet precision I have been able to get out of this thing so far has been quite impressive. Follow my journey as I take this entry-level FX Airguns DRS from pellet plinker to slug slinger. This is what airgunning should feel like. Pure. Pellet. Precision. Period.

    As a student of antique arms, I liked the history you added to some of the DRS's features. "There is no new thing under the Sun." In the last 15 years, I have owned over half a dozen FX rifles, I haven't had one I did not like. It's nice to see a PCP without that cylinder under the barrel or a bottle. I think your review was professional and thorough. I don't watch most RUclips reviews to the end, I did this one.

    Chris I am filling to 230 bar on the FX tube rifles and taking the reading off my Joe Brancoto air tank gauge from Top Airguns which he says is all US made. I will say the small FX gauges are like yours and are probably off 10 to fifteen bar off. I was hoping that the newer DRS valve design would get close to what I get from my Dream Pup for shots. I hope to see some other people doing reviews and see how their rifles preform. If I get the DRS I might just tune it down for shooting in and around barns and out buildings. That should net me some more shots and I would be near my air source for top offs.

    Chris thanks for the up front response. It seems the South Africans and other tuners with 500mm barrels set their regulators at 140 to 150 bar which require a harder hammer strike to get that short high burst of air. I was hoping that would be the route to go with this rifle otherwise for me 35 shots for pesting does not go far enough. Don't know why the reply function wasn't working on your response. I hope you can try this tune or find out what FX recommends.

    • @UpNorthAirGunner
      @UpNorthAirGunner  6 месяцев назад +1

      I too set my guns up with 140-150 bar with my 500mm guns normally, but this is a bit different for a few reasons. The DRS isn't meant for a super high shot count at high power with the 500mm barrel kit. With the 700mm kit for PRS / NRL22 competition at high power we are getting enough shots to get through a single stage.
      The tuning technique is going to be a bit different with this one. The valve is already a short impulse valve and I will see what upping the reg does, but you have to remember this is only 200cc of air. That is a TINY amount of onboard air. If you are looking for a pesting airgun, the FX Impact or Dynamic double bottle is a much better fit for tons of shots.

    If you Buy one, buy in 700mm so it comes with slug barrel and large plenium, install carbon sleeve and slug kit that consists of a heavy hammer a slug probe the day you get it. Oh so wicked with a 34 grain slug at about 960 fps. Use a balistic app and sold platform to shoot from, head shots all day long. I also recomend adding a regulator gauge on the side of the large plenium for precice tuning. You will find "all" these things are on back order, for a reason!!!!😁

    Great information and video as usual Chris. I have been looking for the last 5 years for a true mountain stalker/hunter for ranges out to 75 yds, and this DRS looks like something that can fit the bill. Again, something we discussed before the one limiting thing I see, is the lack of sling mounting studs.

      The DRS will fit you your wish for the perfect woods walker. The stock is made to be able to install swivel studs for a sling as well. The gun is super lightweight and it fits in most scoped rifle cases and gun racks for your atv or side by sides.

      @justinjacobson9569 thanks Justin it looks like it will fit the bill for sure, I have a dreamline classic in the soft touch Synthetic stock and it sees alot of mountain hunting time. The more compact 500 mm barrel and simplicity of the DRS rifle would definitely limit snags when pressing through brush compared to the dreamline with the barrel over tube configuration. I will just have to wait a little while. Purchasing 5 FX rifles the last 2 years has put a huge dent in my bank account.

Anyway Chris I am an FX man I have three FX Impacts a couple of Dreamlines and other models too. I just went out and did a confirmation shot string with my Dreampup .22 220cc tube version at 885 fps with the Hades and got 60 shots before coming off the regulator. That is pretty close to the DRS tube size and stated fps. If the DRS cannot get what FX states on their website they need to correct that to not mislead potential buyers. Thanks Again

    • @UpNorthAirGunner
      @UpNorthAirGunner  6 месяцев назад

      Good to know. What was your fill pressure? Are you filling to 230 or 250 bar? I know that additional 20 bar off a 250 bar Dreamline would give more shots for sure. When you made this comment it made me wonder if my gauge is off.
      I actually should redo this test as I just used a digital pressure gauge to compare the read out on the compressor to the gauge on the gun and it is 15 bar off. So there's some additional shots there to be had, but I don't think I would get to 60 from 35.

  • @williamr9537
    @williamr9537 6 месяцев назад +1

    Good video Chris. I was disappointed to hear you were only getting 35 shots per fill. On FX's website they say the 500mm barrel in .22 cal. with the 15's going at 915 fps that you get 60 shots per fill. If I bought the rifle I was thinking to get the Hades going at about 840 fps to up the shot count. It looked on the video that they tank gauge read about 125 bar when you said it came off the regulator. It would seem if FX says 60 shots per 230 bar fill that your rifles tune is not efficient. Maybe a higher regulator setting for a shorter high burst of air. The DRS Classic is what I have been looking for is a light weight compact pesting rifle particularly if you got the 60 shots FX says. Maybe try to do some tuning to up that shot count.

    • @UpNorthAirGunner
      @UpNorthAirGunner  6 месяцев назад

      Ya I saw that too. Thats gotta be a typo. At 125 bar regulated and this tune was 9 rotations out on the hammer spring for a pretty light hammer strike. I’ll increase reg pressure and try but to go from 35 to 60 seems quite a jump. I’ll check with FX but that’s gotta be a typo.

    If you can harmonically tune the rifle by adjusting the stock screw, it means there is some degree of slop in the way it fits. I’m a huge fan of Minnelli stocks but even with my Dreamline laminated stock I needed a few pieces of quality electrical tape strategically placed to remedy that issue.

    • @UpNorthAirGunner
      @UpNorthAirGunner  6 месяцев назад +4

      Nope. This is true of every firearm I own. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Manners, Boyds, GRS, any OEM stock that has an action screw, the torque will effect the harmonic signature of the rifle. I actually bought this FixIt Stick kit after Oscar from GRS rifle stocks demonstrated for me how Bergera 6.5 CM went from 1 inch groups at 100 yards to 1/2 inch because the action screw needed 10 more in pounds of torque. It isn’t slop, it’s a preferred torque setting. Thanks for watching!

    • @williamczupryn2642
      @williamczupryn2642 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@UpNorthAirGunner I have to respectfully disagree. There is no such thing as an action screw. The flaw in the design is that there is only one screw. Not enough to secure the stock. There should be two screws with a fair bit of distance between them. No doubt your idea works, but it’s because you have to over tourque to compensate for poor engineering. No disrespect. I will experiment with your theory on my Dreamline. If it can reduce my groups by half, I’ll take it.

Next came the 700 22cal with large plenum. 15.89 were 1185fps factory settings. 18.13 we're still 1038. Ended up shooting JSB KO slugs 25.39 @ 985 for great group@ 50 yards. I did have to back off hammer tension by a full turn. Tuesday will be the other 700 22 cal and the 500 22 cal. For a factory set trigger, I am impressed. I am thinking that the other 700mm will shoot the KOs as it feels like the same hammer tension I ended up with from 1st one. Hate the mini magazine! Have to use a pen to rotate for loading. Big fingers don't work well. Even other guy that shot it said mini mag sucks! Not impressed with dovetail rail. First set of rings clamped to front portion. Not back part. Had to get a different set. Cool looking airgun, but its typical FX. They sell you a base gun that barley shoots through paper, but then wait for additional pricing you can turn this into a paper shredder.. lol Next thing you know your 3k into something that looks cool and shoots meh. lol

      ...or you run a bone stock FX King with zero upgrades and make the finals at the North East Airguns Classic running against some of the most modified and upgraded rigs in the industry. Ya that happened just last month. So ya.... that is all noise you just shared.

      @@UpNorthAirGunner Congratulations on making finals. Im sure your skills had more to do with the results than the rifle. It might be noise to you but its my opinion and we are entitled to our opinions. Im not a FX fan buy by any means. Ive shot some of them before and yes they are really nice but not my jam and for the price they are definitely not my jam.

      @@AlbeeSoaring Understood. We will agree to disagree. Regardless, it’s awesome when Airgunners can find a platform they like and is in their price point budget. That’s what matters most.

    Excellent video thank you and great timing as I have been trying to decide between this rifle and a Dreamline in .22 for Silhouette comps but this looks to be the way to go. Would you go 500mm or 600mm barrel for 100% offhand shooting? Moderators are illegal here. Unfortunately I cannot view or try the rifle in Aussie and have to pre-order sight unseen if I want one as none in the county yet. Shot count is not an issue as have a small bottle to fill from and I will use a single shot loader rather than the mag. Cheers.

      Hi Kerryrice. Like you I’m a silhouette shooter in Australia. And I am seriously considering a DRS in .22. Did you get any answer to the 500 vs 600mm barrel question? Also, if I should purchase a DRS, then I want the optional match trigger, an absolutely necessity for me. Also, an issue of concern to me is the shot count - I would want a shot count of at least 55, being 15 for practice and 40 for the competition and I would purchase the optional carbon fibre air tank/barrel. My other question is this: all things being equal, does a 600mm barrel get a higher shot count than the 500? At the moment I use a 177 Crown for silhouette. Cheers. Mattt

    at 50 yards the result should be one single hole....something is wrong in your setup i'm afraid

    • @UpNorthAirGunner
      @UpNorthAirGunner  6 месяцев назад +3

      Thinking that a single hole at 50 yards shooting outdoors in the wind and anything else is a flawed setup is statistically impossible over a full magazine dump or more.
      I have been able to tune airguns to accomplish that in 5 shots, but when you start getting into a more statistically significant shot group sample, being able to get a .3 or .4 inch group is in the realm of great. Shooting pellets outdoors in any kind of wind isn't going to be able to accomplish a single hole.

      Funny, could only find you shooting in videogames on your channel. Do you have link where we can watch you on some of that sweet single-hole action youre talking about ?
