    This was one of the best and most helpful videos I have seen for music production with the new MacBook Pro. I'm so impressed with the performance of these newer models (and the older M1 models really hold up well!). Your tests were much more "real world" compared to some of the Logic benchmark tests I've been seeing done by mostly video-centric users that don't really reflect how most composers work. Thank you.

      Thanks Nasser, I am very happy for the kind feedback! Indeed most videos showcase unrealistic scenarios without any thought on how you use a laptop for music production and think about what WE need as producers. I am going to prepare more content but Ive got quite a few apps to install. 😂😭😃 The M1 8GB is IMO the best laptop for the price, period.Totally worth it without any competition today. The RAM isnt comparable to a intel machine. Its a different architecture and very high speed transfers. Thanks again for the feedback Nasser! 🥳☕️🍿

    I think right now all of the M1’s are going to perform well given the software that’s available. But as we know… As software companies begin taking advantage of these upgrades, the more powerful processors are going to serve you further into the future.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +2

      Yeah we see plenty of "well behaving apps" when they are natively built arm 64 for M1 chip platform. The M1 Pro and MAx are indeed going to hold up for quite some time. Still love the original M1 8GB, such a nice lightweight package with superb power!

  • @RezcoastBrisky

    So it sounds like the M1 is more than enough for audio production (record, mix, master)
    My question would be, would the MacBook Air be a good choice if this is all I’m doing? Say 16gb unified memory and 1tb ssd. I would obviously lack the 2 extra cores and the ability to upgrade to more memory that the M1 pro offers but I’m not quite sure that’d make a big difference for audio production, what do you think? And I’d imagine the mba 16gb memory is more than enough considering your M1 pro has 8gb and performed just fine. Any feedback would be appreciated.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +2

      Yes, although I only tried the M1 Pros but from what I experienced it should definitely be enough power (even without those extra cores) for general audio recording, mixing and mastering with tons of plugins. ☀️

      @@MattiasHolmgren & would this be a smart purchase still today or would you wait for the new MacBook Airs to release, which I’d imagine would be soon although there’s no official date.
      Lastly, considering the new M1 pros that just released, are those worth the extra money to upgrade or would the Air be plenty?

    I bought the maxed out Macbook Pro M1 Max with 64 GB RAM (10 CPU cores/32 GPU cores), and I have huge problems with Kontakt 6! I usually work in 32 buffer size on my Hackintosh, and have no problems there. But on my new "beast" of a Macbook Pro I get glitches in the sound with only ONE (!) instance of Kontakt 6?! Keyscape, Omnisphere and other brands don't have this problem, only Kontakt. It really doesn't seem very fast to me??? Does anyone else have this problem? I'm using the very latest updates: Monterey (12.1), Cubase (1.0.41) and Kontakt (6.1.1). I also testet it in the standalone app, and in Kontakt 5, with the same results. I know none of it has been written for ARM yet, but other people online rave about how great these computers are with Kontakt. But I get the exact opposite experience. Am I the only one?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +2

      Kontakt is not yet Native arm64 / fully M1 compstible. NI have made it compatible vis rosetta, but until we get a full native version its not gonna behave. Are you running Logic in Rosetta (compatible) mode or in pure Apple Silicon Mode? …. You can right click the Logic app and select ”get info”, there u can select which version to load. Try the other version… that is activate ”open in Rosetta mode” and see if u get better result until Ni provides a native build. Let me know how it turns out.

      @@MattiasHolmgren Hi Mattias! Thanks for the quick reply! I’m testing on both Rosetta and Native version in Logic. And in Cubase, and as standalone. I was just wondering if any one else experienced the same as I: That you can’t play any library in Kontakt with 32 buffer size, in 48 KHz without any crackling. Which is weird for a computer that “powerful”. Right?

    I have the money for the M1 PRO 16GB 512 but if its overkill for FL Studio I dont want to waste money. I don't want the M2 13 inch because its limited i/o. Any thoughts on the M2 Air with 8GB 256 vs M1 Pro 14inch 16gb 512. I would have to buy something like the belkin thunderbolt 3 making the £1249 more like £1600 with accessories. Because the 14 has built in HDMI all I need is cheap usb c to USB A hubs for my controllers - so can get the m1 pro for £1719 on Amazon - Is it worth upgrading from the Air to a 14 inch pro?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  Год назад

      Hi Jamie, I always go for the Pro models. It will hold up longer since it also has 16 GB vs 8Gb internal mem. I definitely think it's worth the bump.

  • @DystopianOwl
    @DystopianOwl 4 месяца назад

    Good video! But it's not just that the M1 Max has 2 more cores. The M1 Max has double the performance cores (8 vs 4) and those cores are working the most in Logic Pro. For some reason Logic Pro X does not utilize the efficiency cores as well as Cubase or Reaper. But with more performance cores, you can do more complex and demanding projects in the long run.

  • @overseer_grimal

    I am more curious about the maximum ram amount. Does it makes sense to pay for 32gb or stay with the base 16gb and invest in a bigger ssd which will be used to store cache if there is not enough memory. A larger ssd has more write cycles before it dies and additional space to store libraries looks more important for music production to me. What do you think?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +1

      Yeah SSDs these days are super fast, insane bandwidth on these comps.I'd say 16GB is totally enough. I still do most work on the 8GB M1 because I really like the form factor, light package. M1 Max feels clunky for most of my work when I'm "on the go". ;) But in the studio it's the M1 Max. I'd say go for large SSD + external storage.

    For anyone who is into film scoring with large orchestral kontakt libraries then M1 max 64 gb is the way to go! Coz you got 64g and then more Swap memory so bascially close to 100 gigs of ram (in the intel world)… and also the M1 max future proofs you in terms of Cpu power!
    The M1 8 g is good but it will start having problems once you load up big Kontakt libraries and Synths together….

    I'm pretty impressed with the M1, it's pretty incredible that it's able to hold its on against it's bigger brother M1 Max. The M1 Max is just so tempting quite honestly, especially for all that raw power, I want to get it so I learn how to edit videos but the question will always be do I really need it? 😅
    Perhaps you can help me. Do you think the M1 is capable of running a DAW, OBS, streaming to say YT/Twitch without breaking a sweat? Also does the M1 support 2 displays?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +1

      Hi Tony, on the first test video I did with the M1 I was running DAW + OBS without issues. It's a wonderful machine. To be honest I like the original M1 more than the M1 Max because it has a better form factor (for me), 13", lighter package...only downside is the 2 TB port limit (8GB might seem little, but it goes A LONG WAY). The M1 Max has 3 TB + dedicated mag-safe port so you don't have to use up a TB port just to charge the laptop, which is nice. You can edit videos on the original M1 just fine.
      Original M1 does only support a single display by default...and the limited ports is a bit annoying too. ;) So if you need more external displays go with a M1 Pro. The Max is overkill for most work.

I thought I should go for Newer models M1 Pro and M1 Max but after watching this video, I am gonna stay with my original decision M1 Mac Mini, which is huge save. I typically never do much complicated project, Mostly 20 - 30 Tracks in my Fl studio. For that I think mac mini m1 itself is a overkill , am I right?. Thanks a lot Man, Please advice one thing...

      @@arfeen9741 That’s a great option too. I forgot about iMac. But get the M1 iMac. You are referring to the intel iMac. Don’t waste your money on those models. There are videos of M1 pro and max performance of over 500 tracks. Nobody is doing anything like that unless you are audio production on a film.
      These new computers can do more for less money. You will have an investment for years to come. Keep in mind that most virtual instruments, plug ins and daw are not native yet. However they do run smoothly using Rosetta 2. It means that it will get better in the months to come.

They recommend 16 gbs for Keyscape and explained the samples are very large, Some more than 8gbs and therefore are overloading the ram on my M1, I tried changing some settings like using "Thinning" and that helps but not 100%. Also the new Spectrasonics instrument "Nylon guitar"is also overloading my M1 Mac-mini

      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +1

      Hi Artur. 😉 My conclusion is that the M1 Max is the same cpu as the M1 (with just additional cores) and like u see in my tests its almost the same performance. For the test projects the cpus hit around 25% on both machines. Summary: M1 gives you plenty of power for the cash. That said the extra TB ports are welcome on the M1 MAX. But it doesnt justify the price. I think the Max and Pro is more for video editors and 3d rendering graphics etc. The 8GB M1 never complained on low memory during the whole year of use for real life projects of all kinds. The discs are so fast you will never hit the limit in a real world scenario… ever. The larger display is nice, new keyboard is improved, loss of the touchbar is a pity (IMO 😂).
      Overall Apple Silicon M1, Pro & Max is superb and I love the performance of this new tech. Arm64 for the win! 🍀

They play in their own sonic leauge if you ask me but the BIG downside is that they are heavy on the cpu and Ram because they are IR based plugins. Wow thanks for comparison with the M1 , I was on the fence with which one to purchase, now I have a good idea on which one to buy.
    I don’t overload tracks on studio one with my music production. The most tracks I use are around 15 tracks or maybe 20 at the most, I currently
    Have a 2012 Mac mini i5 with 16gb ram and a 1tb ssd drive, but I’m having trouble with native instruments Kontact instances. Very cpu intensive instruments, so I’m hoping that the base m1 would solve this issue. I’m just going to get the base m1 8gb and buy a thunderbolt inclosure with a 2 tb mvme drive.Thanks again for the incredible comparison test, better than any I’ve seen on RUclips.

      Thanks Rex. Yeah the base M1 8Gb is just an incredible powerful package. Especially if i grab an external 2TB Mvme. :) I mostly use the M1 all over the place because its more lightweight than the M1 Max. But I do most video editing on the M1 Max because more gfx power obviously. Good luck and let me know how u like it when u get it! 🥁☀️🦊

      Oh yes, it's the best bang for the buck laptop...ever! As long as you don't need to play games on it. ;) But for music production, video editing, blender3d, graphics design, app dev.... it's a wonderful machine!
      Indeed, 411 audio tracks playing the same clip is not a real test. We all know that the SSD discs are super fast. Those tests are made by (influencers) who just want to be the first who post about the M1. Before the hard working musicians get their hands on the new units. 🤣
      Real tests require you to load real song projects with different track setups, signal routings and plugin sets like you would do in a normal song production. Plus comparing the same projects running on previous gen.

In fact M1Max only supports the third display through the HDMI port which is still pretty limiting (for some reason Apple never supported DisplayPort daisy chaining).

      As i build DAWs, i find it very hard to explain to clients that having a shitload of the same track is a useless test, as in real projects you will usually be limited by single core performance. On paper, Xeon CPUs with dozen of cores seem great, but in real life even the 6 core i7 8700k beats them all.
      Have you ever looked at the CPU usage when working with ProTools? It's usually a christmas tree shape with just 3 or 4 threads used to the max and some doing just nothing.
      As the M1 all have the same single core performance, and the number of total cores is very similar, i think in real projects they will behave 90% the same.

    I think the 10 core 14gpu with 16gb and a 1tbssd is a better buy Than the New 13inch older first gem m1 cause you get more thunderbolt and hdmi also magsafe also better screen also better cpu as a base model and its only 400$ extra from the older first gen to the New one.
    Only the extra ports i would pay that extra in order to avoid paying for dongles on the older.
    Each dongle is like 50 bucks and i need 2 of them.
    Also if you spec the 10 core 14gpu with the 32gb and 1tbssd its 1000 bucks more and its future proof for the next 5 years easy where as the older its only 16gb.
    Just my 2 cents.

Obviously u will be able to load more plugins and samples with more RAM but 8GB M1 already handle a ton. I also noticed the two extra cores behave oddly sometimes (spiking) when activating all cores on M1 MAX. But works without spikes on M1. Its bot causing audible noise or anything. But I can clearly see the two last cores go high from time to time. Weird, probably some opimization / OS related issue.

      Not sure if it helps, but the original M1 supports one external display. For instance, I have a 38" wide external monitor connected to my M1, and I can use the M1 monitor at the same time. It's quite a lot of real estate. If I wanted to, I could also extend the screen to an iPad, but I use the iPad for DAW remotes.
