I had the 5 series, now I have a E400 cabriolet, the E400 is miles ahead in every and when you switch that dynamic control to sport + that car becomes a beast that the 5 series wish it was. The interior alone in the E-Class is worth the price of admission

Also, he is right that the E class's interior looks inspired from the S Class but he didn't mention that all Mercs as well as BMW's have somewhat the same interior.

Long time Merc and Bimmer customer here. You can't go wrong with either brand if you are purchasing main stream cars like C Class/3Series, E Class/5Series, C63/M3-4, E63/M5. If you talk about large sedans, S class will always be ahead.
Guys very well done review! Appreciate your efforts in doing this and enjoy the back and forth conversation! If was going to move up to a larger sedan no question the S over the 7 series. Down a level BMW 3 series over the C.
Very good review guys, actually best I have seen so far and I have seen many :-). Comes down to personal choice in the end. Personally, I do not like the cabin of the Mercedes so much, particularly those two big tablets and the way they are placed both under that huge sun cover...cabin of the BMW feels lighter due to the solo standing screen on top of the dash. The BMW also makes me just want to go and take a ride with it for fun, the Merc did not do that for me...so BMW for me please.
+BlueHome people like you fail to see the different purposes for both brands. BMW is obviously driver focused and Merc is luxury focused. Stop being so narrow minded and state your preference properly.
I don't see why my comment is narrow minded. I did test rides in both without any assumptions, and just liked the BMW more and ordered that one. You on the other hand already seem to assume BMW and Mercedes have a particular focus. That sounds rather narrow minded to me...
BlueHome merc interior looks much more elegant and special... with only the s class having a similar interior whwras virtually every bmw has that stuck trapezoid screen. the two screens are great... they are like a virtual cockpit providing a pot of information to the driver these cars are not meant to be fun... they are meant to be relaxing... you want fun that's what amg and m are for.
Hasan, that is why I say it is a personal choice. Both are great cars, I am not saying one is better than the other. So you like the Merc's interior more and I like the BMW's interior more...exactly my point :-) AMG and m are certainly a lot of fun (I guess, will never be able to afford them); but even with a small Diesel, I am having fun driving the 5 series; something I was not experiencing while test driving the E series. This is all my experience, it does not mean you feel the same. If you prefer the Merc, please go ahead and enjoy it. We should all be glad we have some many cars to choose from.
BlueHome OK I respect your opinion :) I think 5 series has better exterior but e class has better interior but that's just my opinion. Don't worry buy used amg/m cars I personally love the e92 m3 👌and they are not too too expensive

Speaking of quality, the 5 series is way much better, it feels like it’s built from solid rock, it gives you such a lovely sensation of being in a high quality expensive product, which it is, on the other hand the Merc is good, but you can easily find pieces of scratchy plastics and pieces of trim that feel flimsy. Both are great cars with different qualities, it’s just up to your taste. While I love Merc’s air suspension I would still pick a 5 series any time.
Of course, it's a matter of taste. However, it's a matter of your age too. I believe that younger people love BMW more while olders love MB. Take me, in my younger ages, I would definitely buy BMW, but now (60) I would buy MB for sure.
i'd go for the 540i but i wouldn't mind the E class at all. its so elegant and majestic. though being a Mercedes enthusiast, i always had a soft sport for a 5 series since e39. i saw e63s at my dealer and i was completely blown away. now am waiting for the f90 m5. its gonna be very difficult for me to choose between the two.

+The Wisdom of the FlashGordon Yes, it's a 3.5-liter V6, at least in Germany. But it's also true that the E43 AMG has a 3.0-liter engine, which is a bit odd, considering the AMG has more power than the E400.
The E400 exists as 3.0 and as 3.5. I am owner of a 3.5-version. The E43 is actually a E400 with bigger turbos and other stuff. Even the 450-engine is actually a 400. ....... The 400 has a very low boost-pressure, only 0.7 bar. For example: The A45 AMG has 1.8 bar. So actually, the 400 has a lot potential for tuning and stuff. Where chiptuning at other cars deliver 30 or 40 extra-horsepowers only, you can get 100 horsepowers extra easily for the 400 by chiptuning. Rumors say, you can bring it up to 500 horsepowers (and I would believe it by watching to the Giulia with a 2.9-engine and 510 horsepowers).
That's weird my e400 is a 3.0 v6 I think? Never heard of it with a 3.5 but it pushes the same horses? Also you can tune these cars and easily gain 80 horses with the tune alone..
Personally i prefered Dan shirt, because it offers more comfort, technology and space.Tudor's shirt is also good,it is more focused on the person, who is wearing it and the driving experience with the same old school look like the previous generation.Dan's shirt is not new version of the old one ,it became a light version of the "S class" version of all shirts in the world,a bestseller in its class. Thanks for reading my comment 😊
The reason why the gear shift in BMW 5series (g30) is what you called "rough", or direct in sports mode is that in sports mode, the ZF 8 speed (single clutch transmission) has been tuned completely different compared to Mercedes's 9G Tronics. 9G tronics transmission is more focused on ride comfort where else, BMW's ZF 8speed is focused on much more sporty feel. ZF 8speed is generally much faster and smarter than Mercedes Benz's self-made 9G tronics. Furthermore, the reason why the gear shit is quite rough in sports mode is that, in double clutch transmission, there is a clutch that is responsible for odd gears and even gears. which means that when the car is running in 1st gear, the 2nd gear is ready to kick in instantly. However, due to the fact the ZF 8speed is a single clutch, they need to reduce in loss of time (which means that clutch has to work even harder compared to DCT) AND WHO KNOWS THAT BMW MIGHT HAVE PURPOSELY ASKED ZF TO TUNE IT DIFFERENTLY. (ZF 8SPEED USED IN OTHER CARS ARE NORMALLY VERY SM0OTH SUCH AS JAGUAR ETC. SO THE TRANSMISSION OF E CLASS AND 5SERIES IS THE MATTER OF TUNNING SETTING DIFFERENCE. however, I think If I have a choice to buy a mid-size luxury sedan, I would go for Mercedes E class this time. By the way, don't hate me^^ I personally drive 2016 BMW m6.
The most important thing with these cars is the resale value: It is noticeable that a used E400/450 is extremely cheap (42 k€, 20.000 km, 1 year old) compared to the diesel units. As you would expect, the E400D is the most stable E-Class. So: A) Buying new = E400D or E220D, the E300D has the highest loss of value of the diesel engines (nobody wants that motor). B) Buy used = E450/400 or E53 AMG. A used E53 AMG is about as expensive as a used E400D. The same holds for the S-class! The S400D is again the most stable unit. The cheapest is a used 560S. Don't buy a S500 - it has a new engine with electric drive, here you should wait a generation. Finally: With 15,000 km per year, consumption is irrelevant or negligible.
What clearly separates the two is cost of ownership and the maintenance the BMW will be in the shop most of its life the Mercedes take care of your routine maintenance and you’ll outlive two BMWs
+DriveMag GREAT REVIEW, almost everything is on point. Mercs are always luxury and relaxation focused and BMW's are always dramatic and driving focused. The interior of the 5 series looks like the interior of the old 5 series and all brands share the somewhat same interior design language. The E class and S class interiors don't look the same and the same can be said for 5 series and 7 series combo. You guys don't present a few facts properly.
I am a german car fan, whether it be BMW or Merc. I am a Merc restorer, collector, dealer and fanatic, sure. I love and respect BMW too. The thing is that BMW's are always driver oriented and Merc's are always luxury oriented. People don't seem to understand that and 12 year old kids on the internet who have neither driven the cars or have parents that own either are always saying that BMW is better when sales figures show otherwise, Merc outsells BMW on every continent. If you think of Merc, you think of the S class or the E63 or the C63. If you think of BMW, you think of the 3 series or the M5 or the M3. This itself shows that merc is associated with bigger cars (meaning, luxury cars) and BMW is associated with smaller, more agile (meaning, drivers cars). I own the past two generations of the E63 and the M5 and they are the literal definition of "preference buys cars, not performance" because both brands have a loyal customer base which either prefers M or AMG. There are a few oddballs like me who get both because why not. I hate the mentality of the internet to always criticize merc and praise bmw just because it is a trend that has been existent since youtube went public.
You got a point, I have no critic on Merc, not at all actually. And I' m not 12 years old, just using my old account that I have like 5 years. And btw my parents own a bmw 530d f11 and had many other bmw's. We are looking to buy the new bmw 540i.
In other words you don't want the more comfortable, more luxurious, more reliable car because thats exactly why the e class is a taxi in the first place and not bmw.
I'm not a fan of the screens on the Merc. But I love the switchgear and I hate to say it, it looks more luxurious. I really don't like the exterior of the Merc. Neither of these are young hipster cars, but the merc is meh looking. It's the BMW for me and next year will be buying one.
Great review guys! You're driving home the point... there is no more good car bad car. Personal taste is never wrong.

Hi Ziad, the Euro-spec E400 is a 3.5-liter, we were under the same impression but MB's literature begged to differ: bit.ly/2xfwgr6. Cheers!
But the MB also comes in a coupe that's the one big thing u guys didn't mention gotta go with MB
I prefer the e class but, that's just my opinion 5 series is still really good
Personally i prefered Dan shirt, because it offers more comfort, technology and space.Tudor's shirt is also good,it is more focused on the person, who is wearing it and the driving experience with the same old school look like the previous generation.Dan's shirt is not new version of the old one ,it became a light version of the "S class" version of all shirts in the world,a bestseller in its class. Thanks for reading my comment 😊
this is best review i have seen
BMW for me
Inline 6 is a bad design
It’s smooth, but lifeless and boy when it overheats, it’s done
Great choice of shirts guys. 😎
great comparison, amazing descriptions.
both great cars but I would take the BMW over the Benz any day
The reason why the gear shift in BMW 5series (g30) is what you called "rough", or direct in sports mode is that in sports mode, the ZF 8 speed (single clutch transmission) has been tuned completely different compared to Mercedes's 9G Tronics.
Mercedes is good for taxi. BMW for people who enjoy driving.
i like the way you guys speak English ,, it's much better to learn english from none english people
Its 3.0 not 3.5
The most important thing with these cars is the resale value: It is noticeable that a used E400/450 is extremely cheap (42 k€, 20.000 km, 1 year old) compared to the diesel units. As you would expect, the E400D is the most stable E-Class.
So:
A) Buying new = E400D or E220D, the E300D has the highest loss of value of the diesel engines (nobody wants that motor).
Are these guys where Borat is from bcz the accent is spot on 😂😂
Great job guys from Houston where we see tons of these! Owning. F10 myself .. got me thinkin 🧐
1:50 *Both will be Dinosaurs by 2040 when we all be forced to drive **_electric_** dodgem cars.*
Borat has a RUclips channel
U jelly? 😀
Random Car Guy Mercedes lover?
+ironmanner55 what even makes you say that?

We are looking to buy the new bmw 540i.
e-class(W213) have the best interior design and of course the better car of the bnw 5 series 👌👌☝☝👍👍
E400 for me, even if the 540i is half priced the benz!
Always Mercedes
BMW is more valuable
I love Mercedes but the inline six is the way 6 cylinders should be. V6 is a waste of time.
I thought I was watching a skid from SNL initially
BMW for me....dont want a Taxi
show me E400-Taxi
In other words you don't want the more comfortable, more luxurious, more reliable car because thats exactly why the e class is a taxi in the first place and not bmw.
Hasan Al-habbobi bmw is a police car
Omg how stupid u can be...E 400 u Will never see on taxi and I saw bmw on taxi too. ..so. .?
The last gen 5 series had a terribly cheap interior. Glad they've stepped it up a notch.
No car beats BMW ❤️
3.0 litre V6 TT NOT 3.5.
Mercedes-Benz the Best! King off road
Man, if we could have the BMW front, but everything else from the MB, that would be great.
I'm not a fan of the screens on the Merc. But I love the switchgear and I hate to say it, it looks more luxurious. I really don't like the exterior of the Merc. Neither of these are young hipster cars, but the merc is meh looking. It's the BMW for me and next year will be buying one.
don't fight I buy both
respect I love both cars
Bmw looks more attractive
Air suspension is created from the german engineers exactly for the romanian and bulgarian roads
e 400 has 3.0 engine not 3.5
