When I saw this scene for first time, I was really horrified, and I really felt the claustrophobia of the character. It was an intense experience. But at the same time it reminded me that we are really lucky to be healthy and upright to have the will to change.
I think the emotion in this scene is on par with the emotional moments in the original, both joel kinnaman and gary oldman did a good job acting wise in this movie!
In an interesting role reversal, later on in Altered Carbon, Joel Kinnamn's whole, complete body is present, but is inhabited by the mind of a Japanese man kept in storage for centuries. Full circle.
I grew up with the original Robocop and thought this one wasn't as good but it never could have been. It was solid for a non-satirical remake, and this scene is memorable as hell.
I actually really liked some of the concepts of this film specially Murphy's relationship with his family and all the conflict of him being alive to be turned into corporate property als Kinnaman did pretty good. The biggest problem is it's third act and terrible villain. It was a great blueprint for a great sequel though.
Can you imagine how odd this would be in real life? To see your lungs and brain, things that you would never naturally see. Real brain in a vat type stuff

This is really good. The only thing I wish they did was synchronize the lung animation with Alex's speaking so that if he holds his breath, his lungs inflate and hold. If he exhales, then his lungs deflate. If he speaks, his lungs slowly deflate based on how much air is going out.
@@jon2813 not very well. Like, the amount of air going out (based on the lung contraction) does not correspond with the dialogue being spoken. It seems that his lungs are contracting a lot more than the speaking would suggest. A person can say very long sentences on a full lungful (pair) yet his short sentences are causing the full contraction of his lungs. Also, he appears to be fully inhaling before each sentence. Most times, at rest, a person's lungs are sitting about partway inflated and during breathing, they only cycle between slightly elevated and relaxed levels of breathing. People don't fully inhale or fully exhale unless they are sighing or yawning or about to shout or are performing wim hof breathing exercises. If you tried breathing the way that the CGI lungs were doing so, you would find yourself with slightly numb teeth. Also, consider that the total amount of organic matter in his body has been removed. He still has both fully functioning lungs capable of supplying enough oxygen for a fully grown man, now devoted to supplying that much oxygen for his remaining tissues. He would have to REDUCE the amount of idle breathing to avoid hyperventilation.

@@SpruceCampbell The action scenes weren't much to write home about, but the Transhumanism themes were handled in a league far beyond the original, I felt. In the original, he's a cyborg remembering he was once human. In the reboot, he's a human struggling with becoming a machine, resulting in a battle of ethics, the surface of which barely gets scraped in the original when you compare the two. ...Granted, I came to see a bloodbath and not a study on the morality of turning a man into a machine, but I at least enjoyed it for that.
They missed tons of good opportunities with this version of RoboCop, but if there's a scene that rivals anything in the original is this one. Out of everything I remember of this movie, this was easily the most memorable - and arguably the best - scene.
Actually that is a big part of the original RoboCop. That he was Catholic and that is how he came to accept being this amount of human. Because to commit suicide meant he would damn himself and forfiet peace after death. That is why they can't make more, because a less "faithful" person would choose death (like in RoboCop 2). And before anyone says something different - I am atheist. But they did try to make it realistic and explainable in the originals.
@@spaghetti1641 idk. Im atheist and id take a shot at living even like this. Secons chance and near immortality. Plus a chance to do good. "Pretty much"? The unrated clip of his death brought me here(what made THAT pop up, I have no idea😂). Murphy had his hand blown off, then his arm, then took about 40 shots to the torso, then a head shot which finally made him stop moving. @@LetsNeverPlayAgain In the interviews I've read Verhoeven specifically says Robocop is an "American Jesus", and goes on to site everything from resurrection to walking on water. Of course you can make parallels to other religious figures. But when the director specifically references "American" Jesus and walking on water I think that's pretty direct. Look I'm not a religious guy, I'm just telling you what Paul has said. So are you saying Verhoeven misspoke about his inspiration / intentions for making the film?
imagine being completely immobilised and in some sort of weird costume, then seeing yourself literally slowly torn apart before your very eyes, only to realise that what's left of you is just the essential apparatus you need to survive. Gary Oldman is amazing. He plays such a diverse array of characters, but he pulls every single one off with such seeming effortlessness that you would think he was playing himself.
Very little actually "gets" to me in movies, but holy shit did this scene make me squirm. The emotions you feel are almost indescribable, as you put yourself in Murphy's place and think the EXACT same thing. Just let me die. Oldman absolutely kills it here, too. What a fantastic, unsettling scene.
It's an excellent scene in a fairly mediocre movie (the plot just does not make a lot of sense...that and the Politics is rather out of place at times).
I wouldn't have minded it too much as along as the corporation was footing the bill for maintenance. A cop's meager pay sure as hell isn't going to pay for it.
I mean it's his lungs though right? He probably would have wanted everything that was left. It's like his hand; they could have replaced that but they didn't.
if anyone doubts joel kinnaman can act, think of how much he conveyed with literally just his face and his voice. he couldn't even move his *head* in this scene.
Imagine being Murphy in this scene and not fully accepting you are missing what you thought could’ve been maybe one or two limbs, and then seeing your whole body get taken off until it was just your lungs and one disembodied hand
This movie was kind of underrated. Other than it being quite a bit different than the original, there's really not a whole lot to dislike about it. And Joel really did a fantastic job. He gave it an entirely different spin, in comparison to Peter Weller's incredible portrayal.
I feel like both movies are complete opposites (not in a bad way). The original is technically a Robot who's learning to be kind of human again and discover his past as a human; While the remake is Murphy coming to terms with the fact that he's now just a machine. A brain in a tin can.
I need to watch it again, but I remember it being an interesting, though different, take on the story. The original is my favorite movie of all time, and while the satirical elements tend to get the most praise, I still think the more human side of the story is quite compelling. I like that the remake went with those aspects since they are more relevant for modern times. This scene, the scene with him running away through the rice paddies, and his visit with his family at home are the ones that stick out most in my mind.
@@timbsm To be honest, I just could not see the point of this remake. The very same is true for the remake of 'Total Recall' by the way. Both movies tried to copy the originals without really adding anything new or interesting, while removing all the things that were so interesting and so much fun _and_ while hammering out everything that could endanger the PG-13 rating. That last fact alone made this movie too tame and boring. I _really_ hope the people responsible for this dumpster fire never get movies like 'Starship Troopers' or 'Predator' into their greedy little hands. Don't get me wrong, I actually liked Joel Kinnaman's performance a lot, it's just that he could not save this mess.
@@Furzkampfbomber They didn't add anything? The original film didn't delve that much to the human side of Robocop whilst this one did just did that. And you saying this is boring probably expected an explosive action film which is clearly not this movie is aiming for. Although this is a Robocop film, it's theme is different from the original and it's not even copying like what you said so comparing them is pretty stupid.
I think it just feels like that watching it. Technically I don't even think he has the muscles to even breath himself and its being done automatically for him.
Can you say body horror? I remember the first time I saw this scene at the theater, and I was honestly kind of shocked at the reveal of his organs and his horrified reaction as his body was literally being disassembled before his eyes. In the original movie, OCP tries to erase his memory and hide the fact that he was human once, but his humanity slowly creeps in and he realizes what they have done to him. To me that's much more powerful and horrifying. In the remake it looks like they do it just for the shock value. "Hey Murphy, wanna see something cool? You're just a talking head LOL!!!" I feel so bad for Alex, such a horrible story. He doesn’t want his family to see him cus he hates what he is. But he doesn’t wanna hurt his family by dying, its sad.
As great as this scene is, it's also the reason why this movie doesn't work; Murphy doesn't die. His personality, body and memories aren't erased, leaving us without a movie about a war machine discovering it was man, but with a movie about a disabled man learning to accept his fate.
Losing Murphy's personality is a late plot point added to increase drama and tension towards the climax in the 2014 film. The 80's robocop is far more brutal and sad by having the titular machina slowly discovering that it was a man with a family

This is really good. The only thing I wish they did was synchronize the lung animation with Alex's speaking so that if he holds his breath, his lungs inflate and hold. If he exhales, then his lungs deflate. If he speaks, his lungs slowly deflate based on how much air is going out.
Isn’t that what happened? I thought it was a cool detail
That's literally what they're doing
Thats...what they did
Bruh it does. It even matches his heart rate

I just didnt like his constant mumbling but i guess it showed the human side

And you saying this is boring probably expected an explosive action film which is clearly not this movie is aiming for. Although this is a Robocop film, it's theme is different from the original and it's not even copying like what you said so comparing them is pretty stupid.
this entire scene is just "you are now breathing manually"
I think it just feels like that watching it. Technically I don't even think he has the muscles to even breath himself and its being done automatically for him.
@@billfred9411 you are correct. we move our ribcage to move our lungs like that so we breathe. he has no ribcage so a machine is doing it for him.
@@roberine7241 we feel an illusion that we're pushing/sucking the air inside
but its a muscle moving to give space to air enter
@@triopical6884 that is whaT I meant
@@roberine7241 that it is not what you meant you’re just correcting yourself
Can you say body horror? I remember the first time I saw this scene at the theater, and I was honestly kind of shocked at the reveal of his organs and his horrified reaction as his body was literally being disassembled before his eyes. Overall, I enjoyed the film, but this scene was easily the most powerful.
yes that was body horror
Body and Gender Dysmorphia, that is what Transgender People are going through, They need Love ❤️ & Understanding, to help them navigate the rough times of transition.
@@carminemurray6624 Technically speaking, body dysmorphia is a mental disorder in which one perceives defects in their appearance that aren't registered by others. Most commonly this has to do with weight and/or one's physical shape. Gender dysmorphia is a whole different ballpark.
@@carminemurray6624All of which is unnatural and wrong. If you are born a woman, you are a woman. Born a man? You're a man. Simple.
If you can't accept yourselves for what you are, how do you expect us to accept you? Something to think on.
Don't compare yourselves to Robocop. He's cool, you're just insane.
Also, a big step toward acceptance is to LEAVE KIDS ALONE. stop targeting children.

Dismissed! 😊
@@carminemurray6624we don’t care what they need. Regular people need a lot too, we don’t need even more burdens from useless people. They can figure it out.
This feels like true horror in just ONE SCENE !!!
This scene is honestly too good for this movie.
The movie is good and this scene is excellent, it belonged here.
@@dr_no-no *BULLSHIT*
I didn't like it. It makes no sense in the story to subject him to such horror potentially damaging his mental health.
You're just a talking head LOL!!!"
Give me a break.
@@hullie7529 I think his wife was too selfish. She just wanted fame and popularity 😪 Alex would be better off dead. Than living a fate worse than death. I feel bad for Murphy.
Agree.
What was even the point of keeping his hand?
lol
tony wtf lmfao!
remind him of his humanity
they were selling something.. they wanted to make him more friendly and therefore more appealing to the public. they couldn't deploy the combat drones state side because the public felt threatened by their appearance. they needed a product that was just as effective but friendlier and a human face certainly helped and a hand would to for handshakes and shit..
Because this Robocop is the concept of "A Man Inside a Machine"
this is the darkest part of the whole remake, super dark scene.
Bro just wanted a fade😂😂😂
I feel so bad for Alex, such a horrible story. He doesn’t want his family to see him cus he hates what he is. But he doesn’t wanna hurt his family by dying, its sad.
Did they at least give him a vibrating pp for his wife
Movie not that great, but the acting in this scene is wonderful.
It is. :)
As great as this scene is, it's also the reason why this movie doesn't work; Murphy doesn't die.
His personality, body and memories aren't erased, leaving us without a movie about a war machine discovering it was man, but with a movie about a disabled man learning to accept his fate.
+Sebastián Gómez Letelier Have you seen the movie? They wipe Murphy's personality and the film becomes what you say it lacked
Losing Murphy's personality is a late plot point added to increase drama and tension towards the climax in the 2014 film.
The 80's robocop is far more brutal and sad by having the titular machina slowly discovering that it was a man with a family
@d.h No it's not! He's not convincing at all. The acting took me completely out of the movie. He's far to composed for someone who only has entrails of their body left. People who lose o lay their limbs break down in hysterical crying, I can't even imagine what this would be like.
I always find it fascinating when PG-13 movies shock me way more than R-rated movies.
Imagine dying only to get revived and told to get back to work
You’re in control
**forcibly turned him off not 5 minutes ago**
I like how they have that mirror installed just in case he asks to see the rest of what's left lolPromote that person who thought of it at their team meeting haha
Mac Dee LOL!!!!
They were probably like "Lol lets put a mirror up so we can torture him with the image of what he really is!"
The mirror is useful to see what's happening on the other side of his, er..."body" while working on this side.
We can install a mirror? - random worker
Promote that man! - Boss
"We didn't interfere with you emotion or your interlect, we'll start screwing around with those later in the film,"
This surprisingly did a very good job at capturing the heartbreak of the situation like the first one.
I just love Gary Oldman’s acting in this scene. He starts becoming emotional as soon as Murphy realizes that he’s just a brain with a pair of lungs. Really moving scene. One of the most underrated remakes imo.
Nah he started panicking because he realized he had no pp
