- A return to old-school effects for our Matchless-loving chum, Neville Marten
Life too short for long RUclips videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! In this episode Dan and I catch up with an old friend to put together a whole new pedalboard.
Mick here, hello! I first met Neville Marten in January 1997, I think, when I started work on Guitarist magazine. Nev was editor at that time, having worked previously at Gibson and Fender, and in his own repair business. Over the ensuing quarter-century we have remained firm friends having worked, travelled and played in bands together. I’ve benefitted consistently from his knowledge, experience and sheer passion for guitars and I am forever grateful and thankful for our friendship.
When Nev said he wanted to revisit his traditional pedalboard and put together something really decent, the way forward was clear!
I put together a working test board as a kind of proof of concept for a few weeks prior to this video, but now it’s time for Dan to take over and do it all properly.
Enjoy the video!
Q: Nev talks about a ‘pedal amp’ at the beginning of the video, what does he mean?
A: DSM & Humboldt Simplifier. Nev was looking for a direct solution to replace his Line 6 Helix. As it happens the Helix is working fine, so he doesn’t a new direct solution. This board isn’t for that, it’s for a regular guitar amp, so he decided against the ‘pedal amp’ for this board.

Great episode, love it when Neville questions the amount of gain stages, Dan....does not compute....error....ctrl alt del.😂
Pedalboard Builds are the quality content I subscribed for.
Agree 100% - I could watch them = all day. Always enjoy the informative-content on TPS ( Tangents and all ) Dan & Mick are the Best.
I love Neville, reading his Blues Headlines for about 20+ years now in Guitarist magazine absolute legend 💙 👏🏼 great video gents thank you 🎸
You consider yourself an absolute legend for reading Blues articles?
Soon as I hear Neville's voice, it's the mid-90s, & he's imparting his knowledge through my speakers to 15yr-old me. Great show & great tones! Bet in sounded killer in the room, moving air 👌👍
Dan’s a genius! That gain stage structure with the 2 and the 4 switcher! Amazing! 🤤
Nev started with that experience of being a deer in the headlights while two total pedal expert nerds, who really, really want him to get the most joy from all the boxes, play with a load of gain stages and switchers, apparently at random and very fast; the difference being that they already know how good it’s going to sound when the fiddling is done and it’s dialled in. I’ve seen that look in friends’ eyes when I’m “helping” them with a new board. You really want them to experience that ah-ha moment - it’s like the first time someone hears wet/dry with a chorus or trem pedal. And then at 21.15 - there it is :)
As a contemporary or D&M, I feel like I grew up devouring every print issue of Guitarist, with Neville often at the helm, which makes this even more of a joy to watch.
This show, these 3 guys and their music and friendship, it’s just such a warm blanket. It means so much to us.
This might be my favorite build yet. What a clever design on this one with the signal chain and choice of pedals... I can 100% see myself using this exact setup.
Always love to see the Broadcast. Such a unique pedal in a saturated market & it’s such amazing value for money
May be the best pedalboard I’ve heard TPS put together and for my favorite guest of all episodes such a passionate humble guy. Would love to meet Nev!!!
Ah, Friday…
Another fine example of the pure joy of experimenting and building sounds. Excellent, Gents!
It's fascinating how different your own rig sounds when someone else plays it. You know how much you love the sound while you play, but when you get to listen without playing, it's something new and different.
Neville is great player. And espetially that Matchless sounded galactic.
Always great to see people get those sounds that really inspire them.
Omg, countless hours reading Neville's column in Guitarist magazine.
Thank you for everything over the years.
Everyone should have one Dan and one Mick to help us out with pedalboard builds🎸
As soon as Neville says " I'm worried I'm going to look too pretentious !" I knew he was me kind of man !!!!
Great board! So many classic pedals. Great playing, Neville.
Forgot it was Friday and woke up to a fresh upload, made my day!
PS: anyone else laugh when Mick turned Neville's volume knob down?
I rarely have the patience to watch long videos but content like this just reels me in and I totally lose track of time. What a joy to see a slightly anxious fellow beam with joy at the final result. Great work lads!
Great stuff, thank you!
Love the pedalboard build videos guys, always inspiring!
Best episode I've watched. Amazing tones. Thanks for all the content 🤘🤞
So wonderful to see three guys with so much experience still get genuinely excited about the guitar sounds. Fabulous.
Flippin' Awesome !! I love those tones and level of gain = just perfect !!
What a great pedal board build, fantastic tone and options! Love the pedalboard build videos.
Yay Neville, i was a long time fan of Nev’s Blues Headlines, and a pedalboard build too, awesome.
Had the pleasure of watching Neville play in Retford last night with Marty Wilde..such a great guitarist :) Brilliant night!
Oh wow! This can't be any better! Love Mr Martin's reviews and playing. Making me something to drink and going to really enjoy this one.
Such a great video guys! Nev just inherently has great tone, that light touch that is so dynamic with all of the different levels of drive. Truly gets the most out of every different sound, that Matchless sounds incredible too!
This was brilliant, and the sounds of the stacking gain just gorgeous. But for me Dan's playing stole the show. I love the tones he got out of that Les Paul. I seriously want to learn all of his licks.
Been reading Nevs articles for decades as well as listing to him play and even had his tuitional video, brilliant player
I really enjoyed this. Fun to see when Mr. Marten hears it coming together and his genuine excitement. Good stuff.
Great job guys, nice too see you looking after Neville 👍🏻
Masterpeace in gain staging maaaaan ! 20 minutes in and I learned soooo much !!! You guys can't stop to amaze me with knowledge !
Dan and Mick, videos like this have inspired me to start making my first ever pedalboard. Just waiting for the last pedal to arrive from your good friends in Brisbane. Thanks.
Great vid! I like seeing this more driven side of Dan! Keep it up❤️
Great episode, and lovely to see Neville so happy with his new board. I’ve always leaned more towards playing Strats, but the moment the Les Paul was plugged in … oh my … aural nirvana! Bravo!
Great to meet you Neville (and thanks for the hours of Les Paul sounds and Mick's smiles)
very nice work and an excellent simple looking but great sounding board.
no wet/dry? that coula been anything... go oooonnnn give it a whirl
Great job guys! Neville is soulful player. This is in my top 10 for best TPS shows.
An episode full of sheer joy - and straight up biblical guitar tones. All of your friends are so nice - and they have mad skills, too. Loved it.
What a timely show. Nev's goals and pedal inventory are very similar to my own. I hadn't considered pairing the KOT with the OCD for those particular tasks. I have the OCD set with less (almost no) gain, but I now have new board configuration that's kept me amused all afternoon! All I need now is a Matchless. 👍🏻🤟🏻😁
Hearing Nev's voice reminds me of the good old days of spinning the CD on a fresh issue of Guitar Techniques mag. Legend.
Ha! Awesome!!
Great episode as always! I think it’s funny how I played with two amps and 14 pedals on my board when I first started following TPS and after years of watching the show my board is now a tuner, a Roger Mayer Octavia, a Tone Bender MK1 and a proper spring reverb unit into an AC30 and that’s it. Haha
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt with this show is that you never know what’s enough until you have too much and once you figure out what you like you just need to figure out what you need. I’ve never been happier with my rig.
This is the path to enlightenment right here! Nice one Subro!
I went from buying one of the biggest Schmidt array to fit a ton of pedals and having stress because of too many options, to having a couple of smaller pedalboards to nail different genres
I love mk 1. But why are they so expensive!?
@@krasimirparvanov8139 they’re one of the most finicky circuits to get it right. You’re usually paying for the time finding the parts and auditioning dozens or hundreds of transistors to find the perfect set.
@@Subropontes And also in many cases there is 50% marketing, and previously made legend. Examples...a lot😉.
Pretty much my perfect board, all the pedals fit for me, my board has the exact same elements minus the switchers etc ,the sound possibilities are so similar! I use the OCD for soloś, the TS for crunch & a Tumnus Deluxe for shaping, but will try switching the first two around after seeing this! Many thanks once again for a fantastic video, great to have Neville on, nice bloke, great player and a great fit with you guys!👍👍👏👏👏🎶
Great watch today! Love the loud switch on our old cassette boom box analogy, spot on! That broadcast really blew me away in the context of Neville’s rig. Every time I think I’m done buying pedals…. They pull me back in
What a great episode. I just kept watching and then was very disappointed it was over. Would love to have heard Dan’s telecaster and how it reacted with the different stages. You guys are the masters of tone ! Cheers !
Good lord; that Matchless sounded incredible. Absolutely glorious.
That was epic. It blows me away how just magic tone can get moving things around in your signal chain. That little green pedal as a boost and a broadcast as a low gain always on pedal, throw in a Matchless and a Les Paul and my brain explodes. Thanks gents, heading down stairs to start tinkering again. God this is fun, thanks for the inspiration.!!!
Marvellous episode, what tones from that amazing pedal board that Dan put together for Neville. That Matchless combo is incredible. BTW Nev's CD that's available at the Pedal Show store is an excellent album, well worth a listen 😄
Cheers guys always nice to see and hear Nev. I'd choose a phaser over the chorus but everything else ... just lovely.
Love this, Neville is a cool chap
Oh guys I LOVE these videos! Now I want to bring my Broadcast back down off the shelf and try it into the tube screamer. What great tones!
I'm looking at that Matchless Lighting too, wow.
TGIF, thank you for your amazing work Dan & Mick and crew 🤘
Thank you kindly! Happy Friday!
Great playing and amazing sounds... This is what I imagine when I think of your idea of "experience days" at their absolute best.
It’s a little bit like this, yes!
Thankyou Mick and Dan for having Neville on the show. His sage advice through various magazine articles has been a really important part of my guitar journey. It has helped me become a better player but more importantly a better person. When confronted with a difficult decision I would often ask myself what would Neville advise??? He helped me to see that guitar is more than just the sum of its parts but truly a vehicle for life. Thankyou for everything Neville.
Broadcast into the Matchless for the win. By miles. And the other gain stages just add loveliness. Mick said the same thing as I was typing.
Neville is an ice cold legend, love the blues headlines, amsr-esque vibes
This is one of those episodes where you don’t skip forward. Cheers mates! So good 🎸🎸🎸
Hooooway!
What a superb show! Nev is just such a nice guy, I’m so glad he ended up with such a kick ass board. Broadcast as an always-on was a bit of a revelation! As was that Matchless, the Deluxe Reverb was sounding awesome until that turned up. Both on together would be epic.
Great job guys
That was very easy to follow guys, great job, and that Matchless was ready for action as you dialed it in there... 🙏🔥🚀🎸🎼🎵🎶
What a lovely, lovely guy Nev is. (and his Blues Headlines records is brilliant!) Please let him know how much he's appreciated out here. It's so good to see you two looking after him. It warms my heart. And, now, off to my board to analyze how to use my Broadcast as an always on... Thanks, guys.
Have never appreciated EL84 tube amps--but that Matchless!
Perfection. 🤙🎸
amazing! was totally inspired by this. I tried an OCD into a KOT and used the yellow side on clean boost as the 'tone shaper'. really really great combination. stacks so well.
Flipping unbelievable tone. Superb pedalboard.Tonal bliss! I have been a huge fan of the broadcast since I watched Neville and Richard`s demo of the Roland BCA last year. I ended up adding the broadcast to my Roland BCA purchase. 😁
that`ll sound awesome for the next gig ,GREAT SET-UP 👍👍💪
Love y’all show
I loved the “is that too many gain stages?” question……….I felt Dan did a great job of “right, sit ya self down old mate and let me tell you this fact…..” answer.
You can never, ever, have too many
I met Neville 20 years ago, pre internet, pre YT, on my old Guitarrista magazine. This is surreal he is a master.
Guitarrista! I remember preparing our licensed content for you folks. Mick here. :0)
I've got to say, that is some of the best guitar tones i've ever heard, and with both guitars, what a fantastic setup.
Thank you!
Wonderful video. The thing that strikes me is how many AMAZING tones you got and (almost) all under 100db. I.e. great sounds at pretty reasonable volume.
Beautiful playing too
I could rock that rig for the rest of my life. Great choices
The Lightening is a wonderful sounding amp! All those pedals really compliment it too. Bravo!!
That was a fun show. I loved the Les Paul into the Matchless!
Great build, guys. Killer tones for days.
Dan you have always been a nice man. Good on ya mate.
Good as Gold. I used to live in Australia as an American and I got the poo dough. But you are a traveler. Brilliant! You keep your smile and kind personality. Your family will reward you. You are the ice in the punch bowl. ! Much welcomed.
By order of Magnitude - I'm feeling it as well. Mick, man, you do know how to turn a phrase!!
Man!!!! I love that build. I’m seriously now wanting to redo my board
I love that Neville!!! Su b a great person!!! God bless him!!!
Just ask Neville... you guys did magic for that mate! Soooo much good on ya!!!
Great episode as always!
Congrats on that Les Paul, Mick :)
Thanks Dan and Mick! Love you guys!
You’re welcome Mark. Love you too dood!
Crikey - that Les Paul sounded epic. Instant classic rock right there. Mick, you’re gonna love that guitar!
I already do Duncan. I’m extremely grateful he sold it to me!
The Broadcast into the Matchless is amazing. Oh, KOT is in too, wow.
Amazing rig.
Guessing Lee’s preorder list will be growing today.
wow, the matchless....just sounds great!
Righteous sounds throughout - well batted everyone.
Best guitar site in the world... thanks men
Great show guys!
The flint is a classic for a reason, awesome episode as always🙃
Poor Nev looked bewildered, bless him!
Probably no coincidence that I'd use the same adjectives to describe both Neville & the Matchless. A really uplifting episode. Cheers:-)))
Well that was, as always, interesting and informative. And Neville is just a charming man as well as a very tasty player! Some ideas are forming for me on my board rebuild. Those darn Schmidt Arrays keep calling my name ... so dear but there really isn't anything comparable on the market.
25:21 love the smile in response to the rig and tone!
The Matchless sounds awesome!
Legendary lads! Legendary, lads!
Really good episode! I learned a lot, which is saying something as I’ve probably watched 90% of you Rhett, Rick Beato and Vertex. And the editor of guitarist learning something too speaks to the never ending tone journey being real.
We’re all learning all the time Ron. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Fantastic episode! From Neville's initial reluctance to his unavoidable joy at the end as he played the rig... to Mick's constant butting in. Lol.
That’s my job!
I like the idea of using two QMX so you can flip flop drives and the second to flip flop modulation. Simple and very useful pedal loopers.
Fantastic, love these videos! I'd love to see a bass guitar pedalboard build! I'm keen to do one soon if you want a Guinea pig. Well done on the excellent gain stages.
Love Neville's playing! Sounded like Humble Pie with the LP.
Nice board! and great rock sounds with that Strat! :)
