Pitchers are governed by the pitch count. Usually around 100. If you can get 27 outs with 100 or 110 pitched, and you're pitching well, you can get a complete game. Shohei averages about 6 innings per start, with the MLB average about 5. I think he threw 111 pitches yesterday. Complete games are fairly rare nowadays, with more concern for long term arm health than in the olden days. Complete game shutouts are even rarer. Complete game shutout one hitters even rarer still.
It's not just more concern about arm health, pitchers are getting hurt more because they're throwing harder and their bodies simply give out. We're pushing the limits of what's physically possible these days with how hard guys throw. That's also another reason pitch counts were higher in the past, you can throw more pitches if you're not exerting yourself as much with every pitch.
“SANTA MARIA” is one of the signature calls from well known broadcaster Matt Vasgersian. He’s regularly known to be very animated in his calls, especially on big plays. He currently works exclusively for the Los Angeles Angels, but has also covered the entire MLB, NFL, and even the Olympics.
Thanks for letting us know, appreciate it 🤝 I had no idea Matt Vasgersian is a commentator. He’s actually in a live Discord Poll at the moment for his greatest moments. I’d assumed he was a player 😅
You guys are learning quick. If you are new to the game, it’s hard to understand how impressive it is to hit a 400 foot home run to the opposite field. It’s incredible strength
When I initially saw his stats from yesterday I was so taken aback by how incredible it was that he did all that in a doubleheader that I completely missed that he only gave up ONE hit in the shutout. We're witnessing the stuff of legends in real time everyone....enjoy! Sounds like Ohtani is off the market and staying put as of now as LA tries to make a playoff run.
He’s the second player ever to throw a 1 hitter or less and hit 2 hrs in the same day. Rick wise threw a no hitter and hit two bombs in the same game 48 years ago
5:26 I believe the second game of the double header was less populated than the first because when most people bought tickets for the game on Thursday, they didn’t know the weather on Wednesday in Detroit would be bad, forcing it into a double header Thursday.
Ohtani is just amazing. Fun fact: a Phillies pitcher named Rick Wise once pitched a no hitter and hit two HR's in the same game in 1971back when pitchers hit. Nothing like the player Shohei is of course but that's a pretty damn good day as well.
Pitchers like Shohei who strike out a lot of guys tend to throw a lot of pitches per inning, which means their pitch counts usually get too high for them to be able to pitch 9 innings. Typically the manager takes out a starting pitcher after 100 pitches or so, which means you have to average less than 13 pitches per inning in order to have fewer than 100 pitches thrown before the 9th inning. If you have more the manager will typically take you out.
The light attendance is most likely due to the game the night before being posponed because of weather, which is why they played a double-header the next day. A lot people who were planning to go to the game the previous night likely weren't avaiable for the make-up game because it was being played in the afternoon and they have work/school/etc.
Others explained what “Santa Maria” means but I’d just like to add that the commentator is Matt Vasgersian and that’s his signature call. He used to be the voice of MLB the Show as well.
One of my favorite things about Ohtani is the comment sections on all his highlight videos. One of the only places I've seen with people from all over the world talking and not fighting with eachother, screaming about politics or saying the athlete is actually overrated lol
You hit the nail right on the head! Ohtani has had some injuries in the recent past so he has been given a short leash on the pitching side of things. He typically doesn't pitch more than 6 innings. Which most pitchers really don't anymore. That said, in this game, if you noticed his pitch count in the 9th inning, he had just got to 100 pitches so he was very efficient with the amount of pitches he needed to get to the end of the game so, when you're pitching a 1 hit shutout and you haven't thrown a lot of pitches... you've earned your 9th inning.
Matt Vasgersian is the announcer and for as long as I've known him his signature Home Run call has been "Santa Maria!!!!"....It just means "Holy Mary"- the equivalent to "Oh My God".
“Santa Maria” is just a Spanish language exclamation. “Saint Mary” directly translated it’s just like saying “good lord!” or whatever in English. Crowd in Detroit was light because doubleheaders are usually make-up games from earlier in the season and both of these games were played in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday so lots of people at work lol Shohei is so amazing there really aren’t words to describe him. It’s almost unfair to compare him to other athletes. What he’s doing should literally not be possible
This Angels fan sat at home and watched every pitch of both games. I keep telling myself Shohei will pitch a Perfect Game, and I will be there watching.
he was actually taken off the trading market before these games so he will not be traded this season. Also, “santa maria!” is an expression similar to “oh my god!” Love your videos btw!
Thanks for letting us know 🤝 I hope Angels make the playoffs now because Ohtani belongs in the Post Season 🤞 Thank you, we really appreciate your support.
Complete games for pitchers are very rare nowadays. Shutouts (a complete game allowing zero runs) is even more rare. It requires throwing a lot of pitches , and teams are now more aware of how taxing that can be to a pitcher in the long run. Considering how long MLB contracts have gotten, it makes financial sense to keep their pitch counts as low as possible.
Santa Maria is from the prayer "Hail Mary". At the middle of the prayer we call out to "Holy Maria, Mother of God...". When prayed in Spanish "Holy Mary" translates to "Santa Maria". Among Spanish speakers it used as OMG. Also when Columbus came to the New World his little fleet of 3 ships were the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria.
Complete game shutouts used to be the norm for top pitchers, but they've become very rare. I think part of the reason Ohtani was allowed to finish game 1 is that it was a double header and that performance allowed the Angels to preserve their bullpen for game 2.
Rick Wise of the Phillies threw a no-hitter & also hit 2 home runs in the same game (national league didn’t have the designated hitter & the pitcher hit in the line up)
I’m in Michigan I go to games every year it’s not packed these days like it use to be but the main reason it looks so empty in the second game is bc it was one of the hottest days of the year yesterday and 2nd game so people were getting cooked out there
This game was a double header, typically in double headers you would want to conserve bullpen arms where you would use as little resources for game 1. Originally Shohei was scheduled to start game 1 of LAA vs Toronto but Phil Nevin(manager) opted shohei to pitch game 1 of the double header as if he will be pitching Toronto Game 1 he might not be in optimal condition to pitch as they will be doing a double header where he will DH then jump on to a plane for a series in toronto the following day.
To put everything in context, the day before the game was cancelled due to weather, later that day the GM announced he will not be traded, and after that it was announced that he will start game 1 instead of the later game...Trout will be back in a month or so but Ohtani has decided to put them on his back and try to get into the playoffs...Ohtani just loves baseball... I think he really didn't want to be traded during season...and if he got traded to the NL then he wouldn't win any MVP....and right now he's a lock for it...2 MVP's in 5 years is a good career mark
He has pitched off many shutouts before, he's pitched multiple games shutting out up to 13 batters before actually. This is simply the first time he's done that through 9 innings.
It's just so difficult to explain what an aberration Ohtani is. People can compare him to Babe Ruth from 100 years ago, but the level of competition in the 1920's was nowhere near what it is today. Shohei may very well be the greatest player in baseball history in terms of peak talent (we'll have to see what his longevity ends up being like). What he is doing, especially these past 3 years, is astounding. To the point that 5 years ago, no one around baseball would have thought what we are seeing is even possible.
I remember watching the second home run. It's pretty common for hitters to take their timeout after they get to 2 strikes, but Shohei took his when it was went 3-1. I remember looking to my friend and saying "he's taking a timeout because he knows Manning doesn't want to walk him, and he knows this is his best chance at hitting another home run". And sure enough!
A few weeks ago against my White Sox he hit 2 home runs and struck out 10. Amazing. Pitchers throwing complete games is becoming more and more rare. The game has been restructured to maximize the life of the pitchers. They're usually on very strict pitch counts and will be pulled once that is reached. Obviously no-hitters or perfect games would be less likely, as well as shutouts.
Ohtani is the best to ever play the game. Not only is he a superstar pitcher _and_ batter, I'd bet he'd be great at any position on the field. But I think one day they'll be someone as good or better. Sports science and medicine are so good these days, and only getting better. As a species we're capable of being stronger and faster than our ancestors were. Think about pitting an early era NFL team against a modern one. People continue to push the boundaries of athleticism, and we'll continue to improve as a result.
I’m sure someone has already explained but yes, in baseball complete games are rare. Mainly for the pitchers health, the general watermark for pitchers is to stay around 100 pitches, so you have to pitch a GEM to even get to the 8th inning still under 100 pitches, let alone the 9th inning still under 100 pitches. Also in baseball, the bullpen (the pitchers who come in after the starter), are a tool to be used against certain batters and situations. So once your starter gets you through most of the game, your relievers and your closer can throw a different game plan to the other team. Lastly, MLB hitters get WAYYY better against pitchers on their third time through the lineup, even good pitchers start to get hit or fall apart once they face the lineup 4 or 5 times. Suffice to say, a complete game in baseball nowadays is a real feat that defies all logistics of baseball strategy and load management. And a “shutout” is the term for a complete game where you give up no runs.
He left after his 2nd Homer due to cramping (back) and took the rest of the day off. At his rate, he could've hit a 3rd Homer had he stayed in the game. Just an unreal day for Ohtani.
On your question about pitchers going all 9 - it used to be way, way, way more common. But modern pitching figured out pretty quickly that the number one predictor of injury (other than prior injuries) is pitching longer and more often. So there was a bit of an industry shift.
This is a double-header meaning both games are played in one day but one of them originally wasn't supposed to be played but was because the game the day before got cancelled due to heavy rain. So that one didn't have as much of a crowd! Also it's official now, that the angels aren't trading him, a good decision or a bad one, I now only can keep believing in them and hope shohei can experience the post season with the angels in the probably-going-to-be final year with them.
Yea, the first game was at around 10am and then the second was at I think around 2pm(?) on a random Thursday, so I wouldn’t expect a big crowd. Of course, Shohei put on a show regardless 🙌🏼
Hey guys just to comment on the crowd. Its a weekday afternoon game and unscheduled double header because, of a weather cancelation. Also its Detroit and they stink.
This was a Double Header. Two games, back to back. They were supposed to play a game the night before last. It was cancelled because of inclement weather. It just so happens that yesterday works to make-it-up.
You heard the "Santa Maria" from earlier compilation videos showcasing shohei and trout. The one video of the best bat crack on earth from shohei, I believe he says "Santa Maria"
@@DNReacts But…. Rick Wise just had an incredible day, he wasn’t leading the major leagues in HR’s and didn’t have the leagues lowest batting average against which Ohtani is doing right now, it’s really hard to believe what he is doing right now even though I’m watching it.
It was super hot, and there were a lot of people in the 1st game of the doubleheader because he was pitching then they all left. But it normally isn't that full because the team isn't the best so people don't really show up. Unless the appossing team is good or they play the toronto blue jays because it's only a 4 hour drive from Detroit to toronto
He is staying. The Angels are close to a playoff with the wildcard and only 7 back of the division lead behind the Rangers. They just signed a front line pitcher so they are all in these last two months. Keep up the great reactions.
I’m a Tigers fan and had the (not so) privilege of watching these games. This makes me wonder at what point we start considering Shohei as one of the greatest players ever. Also about the crowd, we’ve put together some solid crowds for some games this season, but this game started at 4 pm so basically everyone was at work, a big reason as to why the stadium was empty.
starting pitchers, if doing well in the game ofc, usually are limited to around 100 pitches per outing, except for rookies who are usually capped at around 80, if theres a lot of traffic, a lot of guys reach base, that could mean only 5 innings, when you do very good it could mean a cg sho (complete game shutout)
Hate to say it because Ohtani is a once in a lifetime player but this isn;t actually the first time this has happened, "Rick Wise" in his June 23, 1971 start threw a no hitter and homering twice.
Throws a complete game 1 hitter hitting up to 99 mph on the radar gun, then plays in the 2nd game a few hrs later and hits 2 home runs. A pitcher is supposed to rest for 4-5 days after pitching just 5 innings never mind a complete game. This guy plays in the 2nd game and hits 2 home runs. He’s the best pitcher and hitter in the league. Crazy
The Angels pulled him from trade offers two days ago AND shored up their pitching by trading for two competent pitchers. They're going all-in for the playoffs and showing their intent to sign him long term.
Have you ever watched Star Trek Seep Space 9? The commander is a big baseball fan and his favorite player was a Japanese player named Buck Buchai who was considered the best player of all time. I think he was a 2 way player as well. Really weird thing is Buchai was born in the 1990s and so was Shohei. Art proving life or is that life proving art?
That doubleheader was played in the middle of the day while most people were at work. That's why the crowd was so sparse. The Tigers don't usually sell out anyway because they're not a great team at the moment, but they usually have many more fans in the stands than this.
I think there may have been players capable of coming close to what Shohei does, but he is the first one to be allowed to do both bat in every game and pitch regularly.
Santa Maria literally translates to Saint Mary (Jesus' mother) in Spanish. It's generally used as an exclamation that is used in place of "Mother Mary" or "My God" or "My goodness."
DN Reacts as of yesterday Angels officially said Ohtani is staying though they did ad Lucas Giolito and another arm both from the Chicago White Sox for Shohei to stay and a playoff push
Moreno has already said he isn't trading him. Moreno is making moves to try and get to the post season. Ohtani is an Angel until the end of the season at least.
I can't wait for him to be a Yankee/Met. Santa Maria is one of Columbus' ships (Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria) when he rolled out to the "New World" and considering how uncool Columbus is now, it's not always a great reference 😂
I bet there has never been another MLB player that has hit a home run in one country and then the very next at-bat hit another home run in another country. Shohei did that when he homered in Detroit and then homered in Toronto the next day in the next at bat.
"Santa Maria" is Spanish for "Holy Mary". "Holy Mary" and "Santa Maria" are used in a similar vain to "oh my God" or "Holy Shit". Filler/reaction you use when you see "a miracle".
Yes, he (and they) (the pitchers) normally come out after six or seven innings. It's the bullpen's responsibility to finish things. A pitcher is left in when he's looking good, has a low pitch count, and has something to prove.
Jim Toban of the Braves threw a couple no-hitters, and also hit 3 home runs in a game once while also pitching a complete game, but did allow 5 runs and his team only won 6-5. Also the 3 home runs were against the Cubs so it doesn't really count. (I'm kidding. I'm a Cubs fan.)
As a Japanese Tigers* fan, whenever Ohtani does something like this, I always think: “That’s awesome, but I wish he’d stop doing that against the Tigers.” But we’re not contending this year (and we haven’t been for quite a while now), so I guess it’s not that bad. *I would like to clarify that I’m referring to the Detroit Tigers here, and not the Hanshin Tigers in Japan, who have the most annoying fanbase in the world.
It wasn't crazy a couple years ago for good pitchers to pitch 7-9 innings regularly. Pitch counts around 120-130 and even higher sometimes being ok. Now though, common practice is to yank a pitcher at around 100 pitches. So complete games, and complete game shutouts used to be more common, now its fairly rare anymore
They're not as majestic and powerful as those towering home runs he hits to center right and right field, but his oppo homers to left are so impressive bc he just clips the ball, often as he's just reaching out for them to make contact. He crushes to the right and clips to the left. Amazing power. And that Matty V call on Shohei homers is like music to my ears. Santa Maria!

Obviously no-hitters or perfect games would be less likely, as well as shutouts.
Incredible!
Santa Maria is roughly "Holy Mary". Poor Ohtani hurt his back on one of his at bats in this second game.
Crazy day! He earned the rest of the day off!
Thank goodness it was only cramping. He's back in the lineup today and has another homer already.
@@carlwilliams9642 He's pretty insane 😲😳
Literally! He hit a homer in his first at bat again tonight! Dude is unreal
If you have a low enough pitch count around 100 pitches they’ll usually let you complete the 9th, but injury risk goes up usually beyond that count.
That makes sense, thank you!
On your question about pitchers going all 9 - it used to be way, way, way more common. But modern pitching figured out pretty quickly that the number one predictor of injury (other than prior injuries) is pitching longer and more often. So there was a bit of an industry shift.
5:35 The game was played in mid afternoon on a weekday when everyone is at work
This is a double-header meaning both games are played in one day but one of them originally wasn't supposed to be played but was because the game the day before got cancelled due to heavy rain.
Others have said that’s Matt Vasgersian’s catch phrase, but they forget he has been the Padres broadcaster from 2002-2008
Hey guys just to comment on the crowd. Its a weekday afternoon game and unscheduled double header because, of a weather cancelation. Also its Detroit and they stink.
Didn’t make the link about the afternoon game. Nick steered me right 😂 Thanks for the comment, we appreciate it
This was a Double Header. Two games, back to back. They were supposed to play a game the night before last. It was cancelled because of inclement weather. It just so happens that yesterday works to make-it-up.
I never thought I would see such a player in my lifetime. If I ever have kids, I don't know if they'll believe me when I tell them about Ohtani.
You heard the "Santa Maria" from earlier compilation videos showcasing shohei and trout. The one video of the best bat crack on earth from shohei, I believe he says "Santa Maria"
Thanks Collin, thought I’d heard it before. Seen in the other comments he’s currently covering LA Angels, so that adds up too
A guy named Rick Wise threw a no hitter and hit 2 HRs in the same game in 1971.
Wow, I hadn’t even considered anyone else had done this given how incredible it is! Thanks for the info Ryan, appreciate it 🤝
@@DNReacts But….
Santa Maria is Spanish for “Saint Mary”. As a Catholic society, it’s like us saying “My god.”
Thank you for letting us know, appreciate it 🤝
Imagine hopefully someday in futbol we will get a player who can player winger or striker and goalkeeper that would be insane
Not only a shut out but I think he only allowed 1 hit. Nearly a no-hitter!
A day game in Detroit seems like the perfect recipe for light attendance lol
He is staying. The Angels are close to a playoff with the wildcard and only 7 back of the division lead behind the Rangers. They just signed a front line pitcher so they are all in these last two months. Keep up the great reactions.
I’m a Tigers fan and had the (not so) privilege of watching these games. This makes me wonder at what point we start considering Shohei as one of the greatest players ever.
Also about the crowd, we’ve put together some solid crowds for some games this season, but this game started at 4 pm so basically everyone was at work, a big reason as to why the stadium was empty.
Never say never. No one would have believed anyone could be a great pitcher and hitter after Babe Ruth.
starting pitchers, if doing well in the game ofc, usually are limited to around 100 pitches per outing, except for rookies who are usually capped at around 80, if theres a lot of traffic, a lot of guys reach base, that could mean only 5 innings, when you do very good it could mean a cg sho (complete game shutout)
Contrary to popular belief he wasn’t cramping his back was hurting from having to carry the entire Angels organization on his back
Hate to say it because Ohtani is a once in a lifetime player but this isn;t actually the first time this has happened, "Rick Wise" in his June 23, 1971 start threw a no hitter and homering twice.
Oh wow, that’s incredible! This sounded that incredible, I didn’t even think to check if anyone had achieved this before. Thanks for the info 🤝
Santa Maria originates from the Latin Saint Santa Maria (Saint Maria in English) Maria basically being the Spanish name for Mary
Crazy
Santa Maria is one of 1 million ways Latinos say essentially meaning in this case (though it varies from person to situation) as Oh My God, Wow!
The Angels pulled him from trade offers two days ago AND shored up their pitching by trading for two competent pitchers. They're going all-in for the playoffs and showing their intent to sign him long term.
Thanks for letting us know 🤝 Angels better make the playoffs now because Ohtani belongs in the Post Season 🤞
Except Babe Ruth did that 100 years ago for a couple seasons.
Just give him the MVP now
Santa Maria literally translates to Saint Mary (Jesus' mother) in Spanish. It's generally used as an exclamation that is used in place of "Mother Mary" or "My God" or "My goodness."
Ah, didn’t even think about it being a Spanish phrase. Thanks for the confirmation Kevin. Hope you’re doing well 🤝
Thank you for the info 😀
He is off the trade block
Thanks for letting us know Gary 🤝 Angels better make the playoffs now because Ohtani belongs in the Post Season 🤞
DN Reacts as of yesterday Angels officially said Ohtani is staying though they did ad Lucas Giolito and another arm both from the Chicago White Sox for Shohei to stay and a playoff push
They've said he's not getting traded; in fact, they just added players.
Thanks for letting us know 🤝 Angels better make the playoffs now because Ohtani belongs in the Post Season
He hit another home run tonight btw hahaha
Moreno has already said he isn't trading him. Moreno is making moves to try and get to the post season. Ohtani is an Angel until the end of the season at least.
People don't hit home runs to that spot in Detroit. That second one was a shot.
Santa Maria TECHNICALLY means Saint Mary (or Maria) but it's just used as an expression in baseball when your mind is blown.
Thanks for letting us know, appreciate it 🤝
Let me translate, "Santa Maria!" = "Oh... My... Word!"
"Santa Maria" is Spanish for "Holy Mary". "Holy Mary" and "Santa Maria" are used in a similar vain to "oh my God" or "Holy Shit". Filler/reaction you use when you see "a miracle".
Santa Maria in this context I'm pretty sure is a reference to Saint Mary, it's essentially the equivalent to saying "holy mother of God"
"It's briyant"
The next day he hit another home run… sadly he was taken out after that due to back cramps. Hopefully that’s all it is and he’s good to go
Santa Maria is spanish/latin for Saint Mary
Somebody on the MLB network figured out that Shohei would be the best hitter on every team, and the best starting pitcher on almost every team.
That’s insane 😂
