I do most of my sewing on a treadle. I don't use the original 100 year old National machine head (only have one bobbin) but it's been restored and kept in a safe place. I first stuck a Japanese clone machine in the treadle stand and used it for the longest and loved it, but now I've since installed a German Pfaff 130 in its place (it has zigzag). I love the control I have with a treadle. Sure there are times I need to get out my newer Brother machine or even my serger,, but for the most part I just sew away on my "me" powered machines.

If you rotate the silver knob on the handwheel about a quarter turn before you wind a bobbin, it’ll disengage your needle bar so it won’t go up and down while the bobbin winds. That’s why it’s there. Beautiful machine. Thanks for the video.
Julie my mother had two of these old singers, that dad electricfied with motors but tredles still functional in case power was down. The drive belts for the motor and the trundle were both stored in one of the drawers.
$20! Boy are you luck! Now a days people are looking for treadles and the pricing has gone through the roof! People want machines of quality that will easily last one or two lifetimes.......you can't find that today!!
Living off the grid a couple decades ago, we got a treadle base. We had a basic sewing machine which fit the opening on the base. We put a belt on it and voila we had a zig zag treadle set up. It was wonderful! Quiet, no noise, very nice to use. Where did it go? I'm looking to put together another similar setup. Keep up the quality information.
From what I see there you have a Model 27 Singer Treadle, Vibrating Shuttle machine. It is the predecessor of the 127 ...The model 27 was manufactured from 1886 thru 1910. The Model 127 replaced the 27 from 1911 thru the 1950's. I can see you have mastered the art of using it too...congratulations ...revived an age old skill that once was part of American life.
A couple things I noticed, one you can disengage the machine from the hand wheel while you wind your bobbins, and an easy way to get the belt on is just to start treadling. There is a catch on the flywheel that grabs the belt and pulls it on. One more thing, when you treadle, put one foot towards the front of the pedal, and one to the back. Just kind of alternate feet like a bike.
Love this video and all of your others too! I have a similar machine and sew for a living. May I make a suggestion? You could save some time and trouble by winding your bobbin while you are sewing. What you need is a "tree", (which you can easily make) basically a pole behind the machine that takes the thread up trough a hook or eyelet, and back down to the bobbin winder. (this allows the thread to come off the spool easily, similar to how you were winding with your finger being the guide). Hope that makes sense and hope it may help make your life sightly easier. Keep up the good work, best wishes, tom
You are such a pro at treadling. I started collecting machines about 10 years ago and managed to acquire 5 treadles (among many others). I have yet to master treadling and hope to have the time this winter for practice. I love all the old iron beauties. So simple to maintain. Thanks for the wonderful video!
How lovely to see a machine like this still in use with kids learning on it. Treadles seem so much easier to control and beginner friendly than foot peddles.
That's a lovely old machine and cabinet. You are very lucky. Just to help......before you wind the bobbin, unscrew the stop motion wheel anticlockwise till it will not go any further. This wheel is the chromed wheel that holds your flywheel on.( in the centre of the flywheel ) You will find that the edge is knurled to help you unscrew it. If the machine is well oiled then the bobbin winder assy moves by itself and the machine needle stays still. It may be a bit stiff because a lot of people do not know its there!!! So it never gets used.
My grandmother had a similar machine not sure what happened to it! You are very handy! Love your videos have been binge watching a little! My mom made our clothes one year made a coke cola shirt i kept it for years!
I have the same treadle sewing machine but the wooden rod that connects to the foot pedal is broken. I wish it had the metal rod instead. So I just use my 34 year old new home electric for all my sewing! The old treadle just used for looks in our entry! Well nice to see one being used! 👍
Awesome video, just so sweet! Where would you get parts for such? I've got my grandmoms and need to drag it out and research some of this. You have me inspired now!
Found 2 treadls 1 is a almost mint. Minnesota c. I bought for $75 love them. The other was a free one but singer needs lots work but free and Amazon sells the parts
Nice video. I have one..... just need to put a belt on it and figure out how to put the bobbin and spindle on it. I wish you hadn't sped up the video so I could really see how to fill the bobbin. I will try it now though. I didn't have one but a prepper friend bartered with me for one. Thanks for sharing.

hi mam, I'm so thankful to watch this. May I use your video to teach my students by saving a few clip on it and add to my presentation? It's a big help for me. Thanks a lot.
AWESOME !!! I recently found a similar one made by Windsor B at a thrift store but haven’t purchased it yet because I don’t know if I can get the parts to make it fully functional.
Very cool. I just was given a 1918 Singer 115. It's electric use tobe treadle. No reverse do you just tye the threads off or go over it at the end? Hope that made sence😊
Do you happen to know which year yours was made in? I have one with the same spiral pattern but it was converted to electric decades ago and i can’t find much like it. But it was originally electric
I learned to sew on a treadle machine at my grandmothers, that thing can move, the only problem is you can't get "fancy" but that's ok I notice you fiddiling with the rope. There is a little handle that you use to move the rope to the side before you put it away. just move the rope to the side before you put it away
Beautiful machine. I've been meaning to ask and keep forgetting. Why is John in another state? I must have missed the video where you explained it. Love your videos.
Jon is working and going to school in Tulsa and I am here in Idaho every summer to help the renters with the irrigation, goat births, and permaculture maintenance.
What year was your sewing machine manufactured? I have a 1917 Singer Red Eye Treadle. It belonged to my grandmother, and possibly my great grandmother. Mine is beautiful. So is yours. I don't think I"ve seen your particular model online before. Would love to have one. :)
do you know how to loosen the clutch wheel when winding a bobbin? Loosening the clutch wheel stops the needle from going up and down while winding a bobbin.
@@dirtpatcheaven Behind the flywheel is a smaller knob. It can be twisted. When you do, the needle stops going up and down. I have the same machine from 1906.
Hello! I have a Damascus treadle sewing machine. I love it. It was working and now the needle won't catch the shuttle thread. I've been looking everywhere on the net for help and can't seem to figure it out. Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you so much for the response. I figured it out, finally.... All I had to do was lower the needle. Now it works like a charm. I was able to get a seam done on a cushion then my 10 yr old daughter became interested. I had to stop my project for a teaching moment. She loves the machine as much as I do now. 😉
Do you have a source where you buy needles for your machine? I have a New Home, built in 1918, that was my grandmother's. I just recently acquired it, but I can't find needles for it. If I use a universal, I have to pull it down so it's barely in the machine. The shaft on the needle needs to be about 1/4" longer. I manage to sew with it with the universal needle, but I wish I could find a better fitting needle.
The older Singers do not. There is an attachment that Singer made the of compatible with some antiques. But frankly I haven't missed any of those things on my old Singer.
I still use my grandma's old singer. I have never used a modern machine and I am not interested in doing so lol. The only downside for me is it can't sew jeans even with a jean needle :(
Need maintenance videos I have one that was my Great-great-great Aunt and even though I installed a new belt it still does not run smoothly; it sticks and is too difficult to turn so the belt just slides (even after tightening). Also I don’t know how to oil it
It may be sticking because it needs oiling. There are lots of little holes in various places on the machines that are there for putting a little drop of oil in. Maybe look online for oiling instructions or just put a tiny drop in the holes you can see (including holes in the treadle itself) plus joints of the treadle and see if that helps.
In the stories I write a sad and depressed Pearsonian boy with dark curly hair, brown eyes and a learning disorder was a recipient of pinafore eroticism long before he became aware of an older female cousin with long dark red curly hair and brown eyes winding bobbins and sewing her own clothes on a machine like this one. The boy would eventually face the indignity of winding bobbins and sewing his own clothes on a Frister & Rossmann treadle sewing machine.
I realize that this video was to showcase the sewing machine, but I couldn't help notice that the craftsmanship was lacking. Those hems will probably ravel out the first time they are washed. Yes, I am a sewing teacher. Good Luck!
Gosh, it wasn't that bad. She at least double folded. Obviously, pressing, and maybe basting, would give much neater results, but I don't think this lacks in strength.

Plz counterclockwise turn the center silver knob on your handwheel about a quarter turn to disengage your drivetrain. Save lots of unnecessary wear.

You don't need to as long as there isn't thread in the needle but you certainly can.

Larry Owens if you turn the inside Chrome nob towards yourself it will disengage the foot and needle so you don't brake it

I noticed that too.
What do you use to clean the machine?

Beautiful Sewing machine.
What's the brand & model?
It is a singer. Not sure of the brand, it is antique and a lot of the writing has rubbed off. Can go see if the owner's manual says.
It's a 28k I think or a 27k treadle
Do you know where I can buy a treadle sewing machine?
I got mine from Facebook marketplace. A 1924 singer machine for $150 in near perfect condition
I presume it cannot reverse or zigzag? Used those at school many moons ago, now my lovely electric machine and overlocker as I sew a LOT
No there is no reverse or zig zag on that one. There are newer machines with reverse that can be used on a treadle table.
The older Singers do not. There is an attachment that Singer made the of compatible with some antiques. But frankly I haven't missed any of those things on my old Singer.
