As a 49 year old female, I wish I had loss of hair on my legs! 😂 I’ve been carnivore/ketovore/animal based for 18 months and feel like I’m shaving my legs and underarms more now than I did in my teens and 20’s 😂. Also, I’ve always had very sparse eye brows but I have more eyebrow hair now than I’ve had in my whole life -it’s light blonde but definitely there. So weird. 🤷🏼♀️
I think the hair loss is blood flow, but also insulin resistance at the early stages. Diabetics no hair at the extremities then less and less blood flow to to the extremities and then the limbs can eventually be at risk. Male pattern baldness will still happen, but yes the better the diet will slow it down a bit. Also taking MSM helps hair and nail growth.
Had the same and it is slowly reversing/re-growing after I changed my diet to very low carb 3 years ago. I lost 22kg of fat, now 145lbs at 5´11" since 2019. Visible pulse legs, arms. Jeans from 33" to 28". Not re growing hair on my head though😂
I used to have and hate my hair leg but now since i knew it was related to blood flow.. i want them to come back… hope i can make it…. I am following all your guide wirh all my energy and patience. Thanks Dr Omara
I lost my leg hair from neuropathy so I shave rest my body. However that option is seriously personal and many men won't feel comfortable but it worked for me.
I have this. What I also notice on my legs the skin is semi numbed, and cuts heal slowly then the rest of my body. I did start carnivore diet 5 days ago and already down 7 lbs. Will continue and will increase exercise. I need to start going back to BJJ.
@@DrSeanOMara l too have lost hair on my lower legs. What is it that you suspect with having an mri of the abdomen? Edit Oh l think l get it, is it about checking the visceral fat? I am over weight now, but wasn't 3yrs ago when this started
That's so weird I don't know if this could be what you were talking about but I have noticed over the years probably in my late 30s I lost all leg hair and all arm hair. I literally just don't have any at all. Even in the bright shadow of the Sun when you can usually see light hairs... It's just baby smooth unlike when I was younger in my twenties. My health/eating are horrendous. Just atarted carnivore and IF... I'm curious to see if that will change! I've been learning about my The importance of nitric oxide in the body and blood flow thanks to one of your comments on one of your videos... I've been following Dr Nathan Bryan to learn about that... And and I just figured it was genetics. I'm so curious if I keep out it if the hair on my arms and legs will grow back?! Because it is fully bare. Like skin smooth all the time!
Unfortunately, I'm at a stressful point in my life and it is somewhat bound to be difficult to manage. Still, had a blood test recently and all results came back good, but continue to have hair loss from the shin area below, also have stain from blood leakage on my skin, linked to varicose veins I seem to have inherited from my father's side. I still believe getting the new treatment for diverting blood flow will help grow hair back, but the UK healthcare system is useless for "non-emergency" treatments so I hope to go private. I've been above average fitness since teenage years, but have noticed in the past year (I'm approaching mid 40s) I'm more prone to wear and tear and even injury, if I do not have proper physical rest especially. I mostly do intermittent fasting as the doc recommends, but I'm not sure this exactly helps in my case, because although I do get all my ordinary nutrients in my main meal I do always feel I'm missing something. I admit I drink coffee, but I've significantly reduced my intake to one strong cup a day, and I generally won't drink until after 2pm so my cortisol levels don't spike unnecessarily in the morning. If onset of visceral fat in the organs is a problem, what's the best way to have that checked?
I've restored my leg hair (and have grown hair everywhere else) using oral Minoxidil, tongkat ali, butea superba, biotin, and MSM. I lost my lower leg hair around my 30s or 40s (I'm 58 now) and now my legs are very hairy.
If stem cells die they probably need the Lord not better blood flow to revive. Give it time though and besides everything else needs the enhance blood flow.
I've got the same thing, and I have 3 herniated discs in my lower back. Notice that the hair loss runs right along the dermatome of the skin area that is affected with twitching and cramps when my lower back is aggravated.
Yes I’ve lost hair on my legs and under my armpits too, and I’m pleased about it. As a 70 year old I think of it as one of the joys of old age. Not at all worried about it as I’m healthy in every other way. Now if only those dozen or so whiskers on my chin would suffer the same fate I could throw away my tweezers😂
I get how cosmetically you are thinking. However when you were 18-24 your hair was different bc your blood flow and overall health was different. Men lose their thick beards with aging for the same reason worsening chronic disease. Try getting more natural sunshine on your face/chin/body and get your visceral fat evaluated
Your philosophy of Optimum is the name of the game. My doc runs many blood tests which is good. Unfortunately, all the results are compared to a sick population and are considered "normal". Perhaps you can do like a CBC or CMP Or any blood test and determine in your opinion what's optimum.
Dr. Sean, I just read an article by 'Finnmark Saunas' (who are undoubtedly biased of course in favor of finnish saunas over infrared saunas). But something that jumped out at me is that they claim that hot finnish saunas do actually put out FIR as well, as a natural part of their heat spectrum - they say there's even more of it than the dedicated FIR saunas emit. If this is true, then your concern based on electrically generated FIR penetrating the body being unnatural might not be as worrisome? Not settled science by any means, but interesting.
Well sounds like sales talk more than science. Dry Finnish have no light spectrum. In dark can’t see them. But IR saunas sell they glow like crazy. Bricks and clouds difference. We are acclimated to heat over evolution but IR only the past maybe 100 yrs.
@@DrSeanOMara I hear that, but here's a slight rejoinder. The sales pitch on that site was for finnish saunas - they were just pointing out that a finnish sauna also gives you the infrared that an infrared sauna provides. You're misunderstanding the science of heat. (There's no baloney or sales pitch here - if you doubt my explanation please research it) Any heater, including those in dry finnish saunas, operates by radiation, and sometimes also by conduction and convection. Any heat source emits infrared - that's how infrared sensors and goggles show even the low heat given off by animals or humans. That's the electromagnetic 'radiation' property of any heat source, and it's the same thing as light, but not visible to the human eye. Just a different part of the spectrum, and it would even be there in a vacuum with no air, the same way light travels through space. The 'conduction' of heat refers to the heat source exciting the air molecules which come in contact with it, which in the case of a finnish sauna then transfer their heat to the human body. Air isn't a very good conductor though, so a finnish sauna has to raise the air to a high temp in order to get the heat energy delivered to our epidermis. (The 'convection' property of heat isn't very important to dry saunas because the enclosed air isn't moving around much). But the main point is that an infrared sauna can deliver the energy to the body through radiation (elecromagnetic waves/ light) directly, efficiently and effectively without needing to heat up the air to put high temps on the surface of the skin. (The reason the infrared sauna does get warm, but comparatively not as hot, is because the infrared rays heat the interior walls and air somewhat but the radiation heaters aren't putting out massive amounts of excess heat by conduction to the air, like the hot contact surfaces of the heaters in a finnish sauna). So, importantly - we have evolved being exposed to infrared radiation, which is emitted by any heat source - but I don't think we've evolved to tolerate the level of air temps found in a finnish sauna. Sweat lodges and saunas go back a way, but not long enough or comprehensively enough for evolution to have made them natural to our physiology. Of course finnish saunas are the originals - there was no electrically powered far infrared heaters when saunas came about. But that doesn't mean their brutal extra heat is necessary or better than modern infrared saunas. I just read another article by Clearlight Saunas, probably also biased in the other direction in favor of infrared saunas, which claims that infrared saunas have been scientifically shown to detox much more - 20% vs. 3% - in one's sweat than finnish saunas. So in last 7 months my left shin area lost leg hair. Diet hasn’t been great. So I started eating better. I also googled supplements. Zinc, low dose iron, biotin/keratin. Now hair has begun growing back in! However cause I tried a few supplements… I don’t know which vitamin(s) I actually was deficient in. Best way to go about finding out? Should I wait till grown in fully before getting off any supplements???
Try butea superba (if you are male) to raise DHT and also high doses of MSM + vitamin C to improve absorption. This has worked for me and has caused hair to grow everywhere.
I’m 27 and I have a bald spot in n the lower shin but the rest of my leg is very hairy. My dad had leg hair loss as did my grandpa, so maybe it’s just genetic. My dad never had hairloss on his head despite losing his shin hair.
My legs are pretty hairy especially if I don't trim it back at all but I've noticed my ankles are like baby smooth now. I wonder if it's related to this.
Hello, I am having complete hair loss on my both legs and hands and thighs. very little hair on wrists on hands and little hair above ankle on legs. having alopecia areata also. Can you help me what would be the causes for complete hair loss on hands ,legs and thighs. now 30 yr old, but from last 15 yrs i could see same. before 15 yrs, I did not remember how the hair was.
I lost mine front and back of legs as well as armpits/groin area. I wonder if it's more so hormonal for females. I also did wonder if was a genetic flip because my mom has zero as an Asian.
Like I feel about Rx drugs in general used for chronic conditions. It’s a cheap inferior solution to a problem better solved by other solutions: get your visceral fat imaged, get it eliminated by lifestyle choices. Make your testicles do the work not a Rx!
A iot of people think it’s socks too. Nope declining blood flow especially in the tissues at the level of the capillaries. Loss of hair is a wake up call. Time to get rid of visceral fat.
Have a subject that will teach your system to grade schools. Hope you will have a research on effects of your system to intelligence and cognitive function of students.
@DrSeanOMara thanks , I ask because it's seems so popular everyone seems to be promoting TRT for optimising health in men when their levels drop below a certain level. Could a lack of DHT hormone be causing the loss of hair on legs? Or circulation issue?
Good God man!!!!! I spent the morning contemplating that iss what’s wrong with our species. We accept disease. We think it’s “aging” it’s not its disease. If you grasp this you have time to declare war on chronic disease, attack it and keep attacking till it’s gone. When your hair on your head arms legs start growing back, your erection becomes rock hard & starts to have a bounce again like when you were a teenager, you are back to doing an increasing number of quality pushups, pull-ups and sprints. Or just think it’s aging and your disease just increasing. I could FREAKING disagree more Bob and hope you change your thinking unless you work for & and own a lot of Big Pharma stocks then rock on I guess. 😳😳
Losing hair on your legs can be caused by many things including any these below: 1. Hemochromatosis 2. Diabetes 3. Thyroid condition 4. Fungal infection 5. Peripheral artery disease
I realize this is an older video, but I had to comment. I did not really notice the hair loss on my legs until I went carnivore on July 1st 2023. I noticed after about a month on this diet that my legs that had been essentially bare of any hair began regrowing. I was astounded by this and mentioned it in passing to a few family members. I have not heard anyone mention this topic anywhere else. It was such an unusual phenomenon that it actually indicated to me something of a profound nature was unfolding in my physiology. Thank you, Dr. Sean for addressing this little unrecognized phenomenon!
Lost the hair on my legs a couple of years ago...I have thyroid antibodies so maybe that has something to do with it? I have done keto/carnivore/low carb eating for about 2 years in total and it has been horrible. I just can't seem to fat adapt, so I can't sleep, running on stresshormones and get really dangerous electrolyte disturbances despite trying my best to counteract that. How do you transition a person to a keto/carnivore diet so that they can thrive? As soon as I start to lower the carbs all hell breaks loose...A gradual approach does NOT go well for me bcs by the time I'm low enough in carbs I'm already broken from stresshormones and sleep deprivation. I have tried a quicker approach aswell but I was already too damaged by previous attempts I guess. My body just goes into chock almost. Can't handle more stress and sleeplessness. But I can't get rid of pain, inflammation, thyroid antibodies and signs of insulin resistance on my current Saladino-type way of eating either...(I can sleep though and I don't have electrolyte disturbances.) I heard you say that you noticed that if your patients ate too much protein in the beginning they wouldn't lose visceral fat. I wish you said roughly how to transition if one has insulin resistance. I've been searching if you have a video about this but haven't found it so far. I hope you'll see this...I need advice.😅 Thanks🪷
Lost most of the hair on my lower legs. Didn’t know what this was from but when being checked for diabetics shoes, my doctor immediately said yes you definitely have blood flow loss to the feet. Suffer from chronic lower back pain and now neuropathy in my feet. The pain is unbearable at times. Gonna have to alter my diet and get this diabetes under control
Started incorporating more nuts and fruits and slowly cutting out the carbs and snack foods. Increasing meats and seafood. About a year ago I went on a carnivore diet and didn’t need diabetes meds anymore. It was hard to keep up a wasn’t cheap. Right now I still have pain in my feet but not as bad. I had back surgery a couple years ago and a spinal chord stimulator put in which helps to control the pain but I still take nerve blockers for it, pain meds and muscle relaxers. I want to cut back and be off them for good. Gonna start exercising again as best I could. I recently picked up a thermal camera and aimed it at my feet just for kicks and was shocked to see actually see the lack of circulation in them and my right foot was worse. The doctors said I had nerve damage on my right side going down my leg. L5 nerve damage
I have an infrared sauna and it certainly makes me sweat. It's also energy efficient and convenient - I have it in my bedroom. I'm not sure why you favor finnish sauna but I have an open mind about it.
Thanks for sharing! Did you ever loose any hair on your head? Mine is getting light in areas and receding. Carnivore for over a year now, I see some growing back, but it’s still a little light in those areas. I’m not doing anything else except for diet changes and sprinting instead of endurance exercise, sunlight, and lifting.
Thanks for the info. Dr. Sean. I am 70 and still have very prominent veins throughout the arms (I have always done wt. bearing ex.) Is this an indication of low body fat (and maybe visceral fat) or just genetics? I can see some pulsing at inside elbow and wrist.
Yes probably both low subcu & visceral fat but an MRI is the best way to evaluate. Sadly as people age they lose both subcu and muscle mass which can misleadingly cause brachial pulse and others to become visible. Try to get an abdominal mri to know for sure.
Dr. Sean, I'm 73 and following your good counsel. Lately now I sometimes feel the hair on my arms standing up and when looking, I noticed that I have a LOT more hair on my arms and legs, chest and stomach than I've had for years. Some on the top of my feet also. Just wanted to verify what you've said about this - it isn't something that I was trying to look for or that I'm imagining. Pretty interesting !
High vitamin A will cause this. It builds up over a lifetime of diet. I've been detoxing vitamin A for 4 years on the lowest possible vitamin A diet. Still have issues, but I'm most of the way there. There are a ton of symptoms when you've accumulated too much vitamin A. I think the medical establishment is still clueless about it. In 2020, I thought this would kill me or require a liver transplant which would have been impossible with no insurance. As soon as you eliminate vitamin A from your diet, your liver will begin to release large amounts of it. This might cause all kinds of additional symptoms for a very long time (years). Vitamin D counters the toxic effects of vitamin A (very important to remember if you have vitamin A issues).
Just leaning into camera. My feet symmetric. You should apply your observations skills to your color of your sebaceous filaments, telangiectasias , sagital abdominal diameter, visceral fat, arterial pulsations - you’d move way ahead.

I have hair on my upper legs and on my feet but just few on my lower legs...i am on a carnivore diet for 5 months...will it grow back eventually?
Hey doc, what are your thought on TRT?
Like I feel about Rx drugs in general used for chronic conditions. It’s a cheap inferior solution to a problem better solved by other solutions: get your visceral fat imaged, get it eliminated by lifestyle choices. Make your testicles do the work not a Rx!
Apart from eating very clean for a long time can you suggest anything else I could do to get the hairs back on my legs..?
Massage and micro needle
Sprinting
I think I have it, but I suffer from Hashimoto.
If thats auto- immune .. carnivore is great for auto- immune conditions.
Same here...
Does this apply to women?
Yes but not as much in a anterolateral pattern as men just thinning hair in general.
I’m a medical professional and I agree. Plus eat fruits and organic foods. Lean meats.
1990s medical school?
You may have wondered into the wrong saloon.
I am only losing hair in 1 of my legs, particularily on the back of my right leg only. Could this be alopecia or could be something else?
Could it be peripheral artery disease? PAD
I thought it was the movement of my trousers shaving them
A iot of people think it’s socks too. Nope declining blood flow especially in the tissues at the level of the capillaries. Loss of hair is a wake up call. Time to get rid of visceral fat.
Have a subject that will teach your system to grade schools. Hope you will have a research on effects of your system to intelligence and cognitive function of students.
This sucks. I’m 21 but have had this for over 2 years. Guess is from lots of sock wearing.
Mine is moving from my legs to my ears and nose😂
I thought it was a sign of pre diabetes to loose the hair on your legs?
Correct, often hitting 5.7 or above on a1c … with diet correcting pre diabetes and better nutrition it returns to normal
Did you go on TRT ?
Never have and never will
@DrSeanOMara thanks , I ask because it's seems so popular everyone seems to be promoting TRT for optimising health in men when their levels drop below a certain level.
Could a lack of DHT hormone be causing the loss of hair on legs? Or circulation issue?
I thought it was my socks causing this.
Old men lose leg hair. So what? It happens, so just accept it. There's really nothing sinister here, just old age..............
Ok saunas that great if you can afford them or have a place to put them?! Come on dude?
Many gyms have dry Finnish saunas: YMCA, LA Fitnness and LifeTime Fitness. Come on dude ….you got this 😛👊
Would time spent in a hot attic during Texas summers be a close equivalent to a Finnish dry sauna?
@@tjtexas5130, 😂 Probably!
Losing hair on your legs can be caused by many things including any these below:
1. Hemochromatosis
2. Diabetes
3. Thyroid condition
4. Fungal infection
5. Peripheral artery disease
Peripheral artery disease and Diabetes (or Metabolic Syndrome) go hand in hand.
@@1FoundSheepInteresting! How is it going now?
yes you did all this but also yo increased your hormones ..... they have been enhanced like testosterone, thyroid, etc.
Ok I haven’t seen the possible link between this and visceral fat/circulation so very interesting
Which diet you try and now your leg hairs are good
Started incorporating more nuts and fruits and slowly cutting out the carbs and snack foods.
@@skidmark7845I lose my lower leg hair too much so! I try your diet ?
I have an infrared sauna and it certainly makes me sweat. It's also energy efficient and convenient - I have it in my bedroom. I'm not sure why you favor finnish sauna but I have an open mind about it.
Thanks for sharing! Did you ever loose any hair on your head? Mine is getting light in areas and receding. Carnivore for over a year now, I see some growing back, but it’s still a little light in those areas. I’m not doing anything else except for diet changes and sprinting instead of endurance exercise, sunlight, and lifting.
It’s those hats man something about those hats
Does not want hair on my legs 🤭
My doctor told me to use minoxidil, but obviosly she had never seen this type of hair loss, I've been on it for 6 months and nothing
Go natural!
It happens from improving blood flow from improving health. 👊F cholesterol
You still got full set of hair thats most important 😊
Interesting
If you’re having hair loss on your legs… and def if it’s related to blood flow, you should be checked for PAD.
Have this issue and I based it on me wearing tight long socks 🧦. Just a theory
I'm in my mid 30s, and I've noticed this since my mid-late 20s.
who tf wants hair on their legs
it prevents friction and chafing. hairless legs are very uncomfortable.
@@BigIndianBindi-jy1cz Hairy legs on men are attractive.
Dr Sean I got more hair on my ears than my head!
Why does your left foot not look flat?
Just leaning into camera. My feet symmetric. You should apply your observations skills to your color of your sebaceous filaments, telangiectasias , sagital abdominal diameter, visceral fat, arterial pulsations - you’d move way ahead.
@@DrSeanOMara I mean youre right, cant say anything against that, was just wondering :D
@@l.3626 ha I am not complaining or troubled by your comment. Just trying to recruit you and maybe what are powerful skills of observation to optimize you and others.

Lost my leg hair in my early 30's, was fit, ate well, exercised. Wasn't hairy to begin with . My father did too. 20 plus years later no biggie.
Yep, me too. Lost my leg hair around 35 Y/O and now I'm 60 and have about 3 hairs on both legs. My dad and brother are the same. I've been asked by strangers if I shave my legs! It has to be genetic!
what were you eating when you lost it? did you make changes to your diet before losing the hair?
Carbs and sugar are responsible for about all our physical and mental problems.
where is the data?
