    Not only was the ambience nice to listen to, but it was also interesting to see what the various hardwares were capable of in every era.

      Whenever new hardware unlocks more rendering power, water is often the go-to subject to depict.
      For example, talking about Super Mario Sunshine: "Nintendo GameCube can reproduce water beautifully. We thought it'd be a shame not to show the beauty of it." --Shigeru Miyamoto, 2002.
      There's so many intricacies to the art. It's not a linear progression, but it's neat to see the gradual development.

    I have wonderful memories of walks along Lake Hylia, of Channelwood and its tree houses in Myst, of races in Dolphin Park, of dizzying dives in Tomb Raider, of the rivers in Rayman 2, of Hong Kong Bay in Shenmue II and Sleeping Dogs, of boat trips along the islands in Far Cry, of afternoons fishing in Sega Marine Fishing and Bass Rush dream... I'm waiting for ONE game to be remade, and that's Riven, so I can finally enjoy its aquatic levels in real time.

    Btw it feels weird to listen to the water sounds without the fighting SFX in Tekken 😅

      hehe, yeah, there's a lot of that. I think Sonic Adventure was the most surprising one for me. The short loop of ambiance is really hidden by the music

  • @sabo-vf3xj
    @sabo-vf3xj 5 месяцев назад +4

    Unrelated, but have you ever considered composing music of your own? (and if you've already done that, sorry for not noticing earlier 😅)
    I would love to hear some of your tunes, specially if they're inspired by SNES or PS1 era music.

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  5 месяцев назад +7

      yeah! I even write a lot of the incidental music for my own videos. I just don't advertise it much.
      search up "sci2023: marked paths [mixtape]". that'll get you to my personal channel. my influences are all over the place, but the 2nd song in that video is PS1 inspired at least!

    Are we hoping to get a side channel that focuses on ambient noise in video games and all the wild work audio designers do?

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  5 месяцев назад

      I've thought about this a bit, but ultimately I think it's simply beyond my expertise. I'm a musician more than a sound designer or audio engineer.

    I think there would've been a riot if wave race wasn't in here lol. Really seems like Nintendo was on top with water for a while, I wonder if their SGI relationship had anything to do with it. I Decided to brush through my steam library while watching this, see what games I remember stopping in just to ogle the water:
    Burnout paradise, factorio, spelunky 1 & 2, dying light, genuinely anything in the source engine, mudrunner and noita were the ones I could recall. A surprising amount of 2D stuff all things considered

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  5 месяцев назад +2

      I'm sure you could build a riot over some of the things I didn't include here. shenmue for example ^^;
      I know that Nintendo really wanted to show off their tech by focusing on water-centric games (mario sunshine, wind waker, wave race) during the gamecube era, but that's true for sega as well (Chaos Zero being designed to show off transparency iirc)

      @@GSTChannelVEVO If you ever make a sequel where you bunch up the games you missed in this one alongside some viewer suggestions, you could make it a double-feature with cool water music! That oughta make a good vid.

    Very cool subject for a video, quite liked this!
    Would suggest to maybe include Rapid Racer from the PS1, and a game using the Snowblind engine (Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath etc) which had really impressive-looking water effects for its time. But still, lots of great examples in this video 👍

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  16 дней назад +1

      That's a really intoxicating idea, since it would also show the evolution of lighting effects. the framing might be a little stranger, though, as i'd need a variety of things to *be* on fire. 🤔
      maybe I'll ponder this further after I finish my current obsession 🤔🤔

    As someone who literally stops to listen/see this kind of stuff all the time when gaming, thank you. I have always felt some attachment to ambience and scenes in games and just finding peace there in my imagination.
    I often can tell a game is good from the skybox and ambience noises and whatnot because it's the little details that show a game was developed with passion.
    I think way back when they first started announcing true VR like the Hololens/Oculus 1 I was so hyped to go into Skyrim and sit next to a river. Of course we still aren't there yet but one day maybe !

    I loved this video!
    But (of course there's a but!) I would have loved to have seen Bungie's Marathon 2: Durandal from 1995. It's one of the first games to feature liquids you can swim in. It had four types (water, sewage, lava, and goo) and several mechanics, like current and tide. But was it worth it something to chill to? Probably not.
