Wire is one of my favorite bands now, but before César introduced them to me less than a year ago I had never heard of them before. I hope this gets more new people interested in this awesome band!
Wire is still making great records today, but those first three records are uncanny. There's a great compilation on CD (Rare to get) called "Behind the Curtain", full of rare demos and unreleased songs from that early era.
love the record.. hey maybe you can help me.. do you know any album from the 80s circa that has quiet the same cover art style and it was recorded by a female composer based on synth and weird drums? something like in between laurie anderson and the blue nile but im not so sure about that.. i just cant find anything like that..
Magazine was an early post-punk band, but they released their debut album in late 1978, around the same time as Chairs Missing, which I think is a lot more post punk than Real Life, which to me comes off more as an art/prog rock album than anything related to punk or post punk. Additionally, I consider Pink Flag (1977) to be post-punk. I've seen this particular classification challenged by many, and while I agree that it isn't exactly post punk in the same, modern sense as Joy Division or Gang of Four, it was still totally distinct from "normal" punk and I believe it's breaking of punk served as the basis for basically all of post punk heading forward. Wire would then lay out the basic roadmap even for the modern-day version of post punk with their albums Chairs Missing and 154, alongside other bands that would begin to dabble in post punk.
Jesus; I keep forgetting this album came out in '79. That's crazy. These guys were way ahead of the curve.
It's mind boggling.

154ever
pre post punk
One of my favourite albums but I'd quibble about them being the first post-punk band. I would say Magazine beat them to it.
