3 bloody amazing albums…Chairs Missing my Favourite of the three…and yes I agree…Mercy has to be my favourite Wire track…the first time I heard it I was blown away…the descending bass line reminded me a bit of the Spacemen 3 tack ‘Take me to the Other Side’. I’m sure Spacemen3 were influenced is some way by Wire….even when I listen to 154 I can hear so many later bands and how they would have been influenced by Wire’s sound and creativity…the track ‘A Touching Display’…I can hear Sonic Youth in there. Amazing band. I need to check out their 200’s era stuff.

154 is such a standout album for me. They somehow managed to make every track sound intensely dissonant, yet harmonious and mysterious at the same time. Their other albums had an essence of this, but not to the same extent.

I’m still in the 1970s Wire era with my little toe dipped in 2000s Wire (I only have Changes Become Us). And I can tell you why I am still there 😁
Whether they intended it or not, those albums are the encapsulation of both punk and post-punk. Pink Flag is “punk punking punk” and honestly, I think Wire when I think “punk”. (Suck it, The Sex Pistols and The Clash and the like 😁). Chairs Missing and 154 are the neon signposts for all the post-punks. They are all inspiring in a collective way and you can glean anything you want from it, either as a listener or even as a composer/producer.
Yes, I need to explore the other eras. In a way, it reminds me of when I tried to read The Silmarillion but I stopped after reading the first chapter. It’s not because I hated the book or thought it was bad. It was because I loved the first chapter that I just stopped as I got what I wanted or needed from it that there was no reason for me to continue. That said, I should continue the Wire journey =]

Omg my second favourite band to the Stranglers yes the first 3 albums are groundbreaking! 154 being my favourite album! Yes the 80's disappointing but being a quality band they develop and change! From the 90's onwards they now do such wonderful albums! This is why I watch your channel 👍

I totally agree, the 80s stuff has always been kinda hard to listen to, but it's still interesting. That's the price a band pays for trying new things, and that's the main reason I love Wire.

I’m definitely here for all eras of Wire. I favor some more than others, though. Lately, I’ve been loving 2000s Wire. “Change Becomes Us” is my favorite album from them at present. “Keep Exhaling” is my jam. I LOVE Newman’s solo offerings, which more than makes up for some of the albums I like, not love. Wire is a wholly unique and prolific band and there’s simply no one like them. I love when you post Wire videos. Excellent perspective.

Spot on take of an unappreciated band 👍👍
Wire was one of the few bands I did pay to see more than once, and I was lucky to see the original lineup in around Send era.
It’s difficult to pick a favorite time period, because each decade had highlights from the band that shine through, but gun to head would have to be the 70s to early 80s. The progression from the first to third LP is brilliant. I strongly believed that their solo work was just as important - the Dome work would never be called a Wire record and Colin’s first solo work is on par with 154 work - my favorite Wire record. 154’s use of space in the songs is amazing.
I think that you’re right - after Ideal Copy the band became rather synthetic sounding. The newer period is much better, however my favorite is Change Becomes Us which is based off older material.
Wire are just as important as groups like The Cure, Joy Division, et al.

Yep, I saw them around the "Send" era as well, they sounded awesome. I would put Wire above The Cure (and definitely above Joy Division), but that's just me. Sometimes a band just speaks to me, and these guys do in spades.
