This version of the song was remixed by Nile Rodgers (the album version sounds a bit different from this). Crazy thing is, the record company originally didn't want to release this as a single because they thought it sounded "too black". But the band stood their ground fighting for it and it ended up being their biggest single at the time (1984). The video was shot at one of their concerts in Toronto during their North American tour in early 1984 (which is chronicled in the documentary Sing Blue Silver, which I highly recommend checking out). I STILL want the jacket Simon wore that tour. LOL!
Duran Duran are amazing live in concert and still sell out huge arenas around the world. Watch their video concert (from the same tour on this video) As The Lights go Down!
DUDE DUDE DUDE. This is the song that started my first obsession in life. Everyone has that one song/video that opens their eyes to the wonder of music, and for me at ten years old, this was IT. I was going to grow up and marry John Taylor haha. This song really is catchy and energetic, so much fun to dance to. I think the video was an actual shoot but they wore the same outfits on that tour and the video is a good representation of their live show in 1984. I remember crying when my parents wouldn’t take me. This entire tour was a huge production and the show was fantastic. You can watch that whole concert in the special called As the Lights Go Down. Their music took a different direction after this album and they lost two members, but they’re still going strong! I consider this their best era but I think it’s because this was when I first discovered them. Thank you for reacting to this one, I was dancing right along with you at the end!

"The Reflex" is primarily a concert video, accurately portraying Duran Duran's Sing Blue Silver tour performance style. In keeping with the band's insistence that their videos "never be ordinary", the video screen above the stage displayed bits of naked models wearing collars and chains illuminated with black light, occasionally interrupted by computerized video white noise. At one point, a computer graphics generated waterfall appears to pour out of the video screen above the stage to soak the audience
This is the hardest song for a singer, Simon's voice is "supernatural" on this. I then and now tried so bad to sing "why-ay-ay...trhahay"and I won't tell you the result...... One of their best songs. And yes it was live from one of their concerts. They were just in the business about three years. They have natural talents. Nick makes the sounds you hear with a synthesizer and also trick photography was how the water got in the video.
Their poster graced my bedroom wall through the 80's. I was in love with John Taylor the bassist. The band had three unrelated members with the last name of Taylor.
This was from their concert video "As The Lights Go Down" from their 1984 tour. It had a behind the scenes documentary with it called "Sing Blue Silver". When the apocalypse hits, I'm grabbing those dvds and LOTR:FOTR:EE and making a break for it. 😁 Mtv used to have a show called "Friday Night Video Fights". Every Friday night they would have two videos go head to head. Viewers would call an 800 number to vote on which video they wanted to win. When the show was finally going off the air, they had a final showdown between the two videos that had the most wins. "The Reflex" and Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home" had both won something like 11 times. So they were the final battle. I'll let you guess which video won.
Duran Duran filmed the video for The Reflex on March 5, 1984 at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada. Some close-ups and staged shots were filmed that afternoon and the live footage was filmed for the video the same evening during their live show.
Check out Duran Duran’s Arena album for their live experience . They also did a documentary of that tour, also called Arena and released originally on VHS. So awesome. And, I’m dating myself.
John Taylor from Duran Duran was the ghost of Christmas present in A Diva's Christmas Carol with Vanessa Williams (last I checked, it's available here on RUclips).
This is one of the songs arranged by "the hitmaker" Nile Rogers of Chic. Other songs he arranged were Lets Dance (David Bowie), Like a Virgin (Madonna), most music by Sister Sledge, Im Coming Out (Diana Ross).
I saw them on this concert tour in Chicago. Yes- they were this energetic and dynamic to watch. GREAT show. They still sounds great. Check out Is There Something I Should Know!
As a rock fan Duran Duran’s music often got lost in the style, presentation and image. Now with the benefit of time it’s clear to see what great musicians they are and what banging tunes they produced
They were one of the biggest grossing live acts of the 80s mate. Roger Taylor on lead guitar, John Taylor on bass, and the amazing Nick Rhodes on keyboards
They are amazing live. The best gig I ever went to was a warm-up they were doing about ten years ago, in a tiny venue here in the UK. I ended up at the front. It felt like it must have felt in the early Eighties... (intimate and sweaty 😂)
@@mariflame1821 That's why in my opinion it sounds like a Chic song. If you wanted to compare them on paper, they might all look the same too, with minor tweaks. You basically can know who produced by having an ear for it.
I am in a DD revival phase ATM, went to their online store to buy a The Reflex t-shirt and it is sold out! Duranies still living hard! 💪💖 got me one with the band name pretty cool
Love it, love it, love it! Duran Duran was the shit back in the day. One of the greatest British New Wave bands to come out of that era. So glad to see that your appreciation of this now, 35-plus years later, rivals ours from then. Good music endures and is timeless, eh?
Duran Duran - The Reflex (12" Dance Mix) is awesome Duran Duran - Notorious is also very good and is in the amazing film Donnie Darko (2001), which has a great 80s soundtrack, including Tears for Fears and Echo & the Bunnymen.
Jay, they will be in Austin this weekend (3rd I believe) & next weekend as headliners for ACL!! This was in '84, but I've been to DD concerts every decade & this is how they are, my last show in Palm Springs in September 2019. YOU MUST GO TO AT LEAST ONE DD CONCERT, trust me ❤🎶 much love to you & your channel!
Love Duran Duran. "Notorious" and "Wild Boys" are my two favorites from them. Funny thing about this song is that people get it mixed up with "Relax" from Frankie Goes to Hollywood a lot. My wife always thinks that Duran Duran sings that one. :D
One of the most unique bands on earth. They were Beatles-hot, Stones-energetic, and Billy Joel eclectic! Took the world by storm. My first concert too! Worcester Centrum, 1986. Best birthday present ever!
You should react to their performance at the Billboard Music awards this year. It was kind of cool because Duran Duran played a new song called invisible and then two of their older songs. Notorious and hungry like the Wolf. My daughter got to see them and we also watched the BTS performance together because she is part of the army. That is an understatement. She is 14 and she's been part of the army since about 2014-2015
Ohh, they played this all.the time,..the radio and MTV were in competition playing it,..sometimes I'd be watching it on tv,.then I had to turn it off,.hop in the car to go to work,..I turn the radio on,..and low and behold,..its on the radio,..I swear,..I think this went platinum,..like all over the world,..I never got to see them, live in person,.but this video,..and others,..you do feel like your there,..fantastic group,..lot of hits,..Union 0f The Snake,..Planet Earth(very first of there's to be on MTV), Save A Prayer,(such a good one),..Ordinary World (so my fav),..ohh and they did a James Bond movie song, View To A Kill(movie of the same name, think that was the last one Roger Moore did before Timothy Dalton, who took the raines shortly before they settled on Pierce Brosnan), it was quite memorable, Grace Jones, a wildly talented woman,..started out as model,..became movie star actress, singer was a Bond villian in it, her and Everett McGill, who was in Twin Peaks, Silver Bullet movies,...she's incredible,..again that song had striking drum beat, like Reflex,..and John Taylor, Andy Taylor,..worked with Robert Palmer, as a group, Power Station,..do check them out,..do keep going, Godspeed, Peace ✌
I had a 60-minute mix tape and an auto-reverse walkman so I heard this song several times a night while falling asleep throughout my childhood. That ta-na-na-na backing vocal will always give me the feels.
Only scratching the surface. They have so many great songs.. they were huge!! Try - view to a kill, notorious, wild boys, rio, girls on film, planet earth, so many more.
Duran Duran-Blue Moon on Monday Duran Duran-Planet Earth duran duran-I don't want your love Duran Duran-Notorious Duran duran-All she wants is Duran Duran-A View To A Kill
Yes, their live shows were great. Tons of spectacle, good use of the space and stage. One of the few things I miss from the days when concerts were about packing stadiums -- they knew you needed to get your money's worth, lol, especially if you didn't have prime seats.
He mixed those songs. That's why you can tell that it's Nile Rodger. He was the last one to touch it, like "Let's Dance" by David Bowie. He did "ghost produce" all stated tracks. Sounds like an 80's version of Chic with Rock elements to me.
@@naturalsovereign9761 The first song of Duran Duran's that Nile Rodgers worked on was The Reflex in which he remixed the original version produced on the album by Alex Sadkin, Duran Duran and Ian Little. The others involved with the Seven And The Ragged Tiger recordings were engineers Phil Thornalley and Peter Wade-Schwier There was no involvement from Nile Rodgers on any Seven And The Ragged Tiger tracks- besides remixing The Reflex, nor was Rodgers involved as a "Ghost Producer." Nile Rodgers and Duran Duran produced The Wild Boys, which was engineered by Jason Corsaro. Again, Bernard Edwards, from Chic, produced A View To A Kill along with Duran Duran and Jason Corsaro. Jason Corsaro also mixed and engineered the track. Nile Rodgers and Duran Duran produced the Notorious album, which was engineered by Daniel Abraham, who co-produced Big Thing with Duranduran and Jonathan Elias. The album was mixed by Daniel Abraham and engineered by Danny Mormando, Dave Way, Jean Loup Morette. Nile Rodgers worked again with DD on parts of the Astronaut album and then again on parts of their last album, Paper Gods. He is not a "Ghost Producer" for DD nor is he a Ghost producer on any of their recordings. Rodgers is given credit and acknowledged on all tracks he has been involved with. LOL
I so appreciate your appreciation of this incredibly talented group of musicians. 40 years later they are still going strong, but you may not see the acrobatics these days. I mean they are mostly all in their 60s. They haven't lost their edge or flair otherwise. This is the official video so the album version is dubbed over live footage. They have a live concert film from their heyday called as The Lights Go Down and if you liked this, you REALLY need to experience the actual concert footage. My favorites from As The Lights go Down are New Religion, The Chauffeur, and Girls on Film. Be forewarned, with DD, the only things you can count on is that you are either going to hear the most catchy, fun and danceable rock you've ever heard, or it will be beautiful or dark and ethereal. Also, these guys are known for basically incorporating multimedia into their live shows before that term even existed, so you will see a lot...it's a bit of sensory overload in the absolute best way!
Duran Duran was a band allowed to sing the theme song to one of the Bond movies in the 80s. They had a huge presence on MTV and were almost as big as the Beatles. They have NUMEROUS entertaining videos worth watching. "Girl Panic" (see the longer version) is one of their more recent ones that gives you an idea how big they were in the 80s.
Saw them in 1984 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago. Great show. I would also recommend a reaction to their first hit, Planet Earth. Girls On Film is a bop as well.
I’m a Duranie for life! I love this group and hope to see them live soon! They were one of the top groups of the eighties and they are still releasing new music and touring!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️

Clicked on this so fast! It's one of my favourite Duran Duran songs. Definitely check out Notorious next. :)
John Taylor from Duran Duran was the ghost of Christmas present in A Diva's Christmas Carol with Vanessa Williams (last I checked, it's available here on RUclips).
i love that movie
That is so good to know! I've seen that movie but didn't realize it was him!
That’s funny. When I saw them on the seven tour ‘84 the band that opened for them was Christmas Past. 😳
@@slimlouis6441 That’s a bad band name : an open goal.for music journalists.
One of their best songs!!
Yes this is what Duran Duran is live. They really don't get the credit they deserve for being a touring band. They are so fun live
It sounds different because the song was made with Nile Rodgers behind it.
He remixed it after it was made. But definitely made the single better than the album version.
It sounds like Chic song. Also "Union of the Snake" and "View to a Kill"
Yes, Nile Rogers from Chic fame has produced do many of their song!
@@mariflame1821 That's why in my opinion it sounds like a Chic song. If you wanted to compare them on paper, they might all look the same too, with minor tweaks. You basically can know who produced by having an ear for it.
He wrote the guitar riffs.
Had the pleasure to see them live and yes, they are great live!
Planet Earth, their first big hit, and my favourite Duran song
A masterpiece in its style
I didn't like Duran Duran growing up. It wasn't until the early '90s that I started to appreciate them and I've loved them since!
Duran Duran - The Reflex (12" Dance Mix) is awesome
Duran Duran - Notorious is also very good and is in the amazing film Donnie Darko (2001), which has a great 80s soundtrack, including Tears for Fears and Echo & the Bunnymen.
Time for a rewatch! Great post
Amazingly produced, within an inch of its life.
Loveeee ur reaction!!!! You are a truly Duranie ( Duran Duran fan)!!!
Duran Duran is truly a special act in the history of music. They have spanned 4 decades with quality sound, music and amazing videos.
She is 14 and she's been part of the army since about 2014-2015
They are extremely good live. This was live footage but not live audio. I have seen them 4 times and they are more than solid.
You should do Duran Duran - A View To A Kill. (James Bond movie theme song)
Bond
simon le bon🤣
The best band! They are totally like this! And still touring with new songs
You've got Nile Rodgers of Chic to thank for this sound. He also produced Let's Dance for David Bowie.
Very distinctive sound 👌
*New Moon on Monday 😊
And I've been hearing that song every since. On Monday when I happen to seen the moon.
Yes, their live shows were great. Tons of spectacle, good use of the space and stage. One of the few things I miss from the days when concerts were about packing stadiums -- they knew you needed to get your money's worth, lol, especially if you didn't have prime seats.
React to Duran Duran's song "Rio", "Is there something I should know?", "Planet Earth", "Careless Memories"
Ordinary World is one of my favorites from Duran Duran! 👍🏼
The legend Nile Rodgers worked on this song.
Remixed and made a NRO1 UK/US
Also "Union of the Snake" and "View to a Kill". That's why it's good. They sound Chic songs.
@@naturalsovereign9761 Rodgers did not work on "Union Of The Snake." Bernard Edwards produced "A View To A Kill" but don't think it sounds like Chic.
The others involved with the Seven And The Ragged Tiger recordings were engineers Phil Thornalley and Peter Wade-Schwier
There was no involvement from Nile Rodgers on any Seven And The Ragged Tiger tracks- besides remixing The Reflex, nor was Rodgers involved as a "Ghost Producer."
Nile Rodgers and Duran Duran produced The Wild Boys, which was engineered by Jason Corsaro.
Another 80’s classic is Poison Arrow by ABC. Great song
A view to kill... And it's a great song fits the movie
Saw them in 1984 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago. Great show. I would also recommend a reaction to their first hit, Planet Earth. Girls On Film is a bop as well.
I was there also!
Planet earths drum beat waa addictive. Ordinary world was also a huge hit
I saw it in Pgh and LA. Amazing show.
I’m a Duranie for life! I love this group and hope to see them live soon! They were one of the top groups of the eighties and they are still releasing new music and touring!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
They have a new record and they still sound great, ESPECIALLY Simon. ❤️
And John's bass skills 😊.
this was a song i enjoyed when it came on MTV, I was in basic training and tech school at the skylark airmans club at Lackland AFB. 1984, brings back memories. what are others.
