    Duran Duran were actually bigger than Queen in the 80s. Queen was bigger in the 70s. Duran Duran were know as the Fab 5 because they were the biggest band then, similar to The Beatles in the 1960s.

    • @Music-tg5is
      @Music-tg5is 8 месяцев назад +3

      That's funny, because I grew up in the 80s and I clearly remember that they were more regarded as a "boy band" by many and mainly had a fanbase consisting of teenage girls and gays. They were closer to a boyband like BROS, rather than the Beatles.

    I had to laugh at your comments about making the song better - you’re speaking from your current perspective in 2023. The 80s music scene was so different (obviously) from now, and all the over the top crazy 80s stuff was amazing coming out of the slower, songwriter ballad 70s (not including the late 70s disco scene). It was exactly right for the time, and trying to listen to it now out of that environment isn’t going to be the same. The Nile Rodgers remixed version for the radio was what took it too #1!

    • @jc_mck
      @jc_mck 8 месяцев назад +2

      Exactly! But to choose between the music scene in the 80's and now, I'd choose the 80's anytime. The musicians back then were good looking, well-dressed, and weirdly creative.

    This was just not good. I don’t tolerate Duran Duran very well…… except for one song. I love Ordinary World. I was digging around RUclips one day and it popped up as a cover by Adam Lambert. He’s not my cup of tea but it had been a long time since I heard it so I listened. INCREDIBLE cover. His killer voice and arrangement made me fall in love with that song all over again. So, I do appreciate that contribution from Duran Duran.

    A point of trivia: Duran Duran was Princess Diana's favorite band. On a different note, after hearing of Ty's imminent departure I've been wondering if giving him a musical send-off of songs from bands he likes would be something you'd consider. You seem to do four songs on the day you record, so here's my suggestions: Al Stewart's "On the Border", (some will say "Roads to Moscow", but the theme's a bit dreary for this occasion); Ambrosia's "You're the Only Woman", (which would round-out their three biggest hits); "Never Surrender" or "Hold On" from Triumph (and I DO think Ty could rock that Rik Emmett hair style, lol); and the finale could be Kenny Loggins beautiful album version of "Celebrate Me Home". And being we WILL celebrate him back when he returns, you could play the live version then. Just some thoughts...Pam in Detroit

    I'm an old fart, so when I was at university, they were HUGE! They are very listenable, but I was never a big fan. Simon Le Bon was supposedly a big heart throb, but never did much for me. I'm MUCH more of a Nick fan. ;) Thanks for the trip back to my university days. Was fun!

    I didn’t like Duran Duran when they were popular and I’m completely baffled that people talk about them now as one of the great bands of the ‘80s.

    12:06 Nick, that's a Latin percussion instrument called an agogo. It is also used in the beginning of the Tears For Fears song "Shout."

    Although Duran Duran was not one of my favorite groups growing up in the 80's, they were huge.

      It would be interesting to hear, see, or read comments from Duran Duran members and the decision makers at MTV in the early 1980s. In some ways, it was like the popularity of Duran Duran helped propel MTV forward. However, without MTV, the band would have only been largely relegated to growing popularity from the radio, concerts, TV performance programs/talk or chat shows, and maybe teen magazines. Duran Duran would have been a popular band without MTV based on their music, but getting played in super heavy rotation for the peak years of their career did not hurt them. It also didn't hurt MTV to play them so often in the age before easily available VCRs.

    The label didn’t make them do this, Simon writes pretty much all of the lyrics, so he wrote it and has himself to blame. LOL but he did say that when he wrote it, he had no idea what it was about.

    You gotta do Rio which has an incredible bass line. I also love View to a Kill and Save a Prayer.
    Duran Duran was seen by too many as a boy band, but they can all really play. People did not want to believe that such good looking guys were legit musicians.

    Best Band Ever IMHO. Loved them since the 80s and they are still going strong. Incredible bass player in John Taylor, go watch the videos of him playing bass on Rio, New Religion, and Careless Memories from the same concert. The whole band is great at every instrument they play and they write really catchy songs. They were all thought of as just pretty boys but not many realized how good a musician each one of them was and still is. Notorious is another great funky song from them. Concert on youtube is called As The Lights Go Down. They put on such great concerts too! Also disagree. Great song considering it was released in 1984. The original song didn't have all the sampling of the voices etc but Nile Rogers from Chic remixed it to have this single.

    3:45 Love Duran Duran "Vertigo" live is great. "A view to kill" "Come Undone" they really captured that unique sound that can be played through the 80's to today pop. Has that Sade sound
