As an owner of a 1999 380 7' fin keel model, Captain Q certainly hit on all the features that make this an excellent boat, but he missed one... it sails as great as its aesthetics. It's heavy so she needs about 10 knots of wind to get it going, but we've sailed it in 35 knot gusts with a little main and a little Genoa out and were completely in control and very comfortable. Another great exploration of a well priced sailboat. I want to see this channel continue to grow, you two deserve it. As for boat, the engineer in me loves the design consideration on the interior, extracting space where others do not. The hull design would never meet my desire but I appreciate it for what it is and does, where appropriate. It is pretty Kewl that this one sold before the video was done. :D
Love Catalinas. Spent lots of wonderful days cruising the Chesapeake with my Dad on a Catalina 30. One of the things I like most about your channel is that it reminds me of hunting for that boat in boatyards around Baltimore.
Thank you once again for what you both are doing. Not only do I enjoy the content and banter the production is excellent. This channel is really onto something and I’m excited to see where it goes. Keep up the good work.
Let me expand on your story: About 1962, Frank Butler ordered a Victory 21 from Hank McCuen (who, as a comedian, has credit for inventing the laugh track on his comedy show in 1950, it’s in Wikipedia) The sail emblem for the Victory was a checkered flag (and still is, I see them race as a large fleet in San Diego) following the horse race theme to his boat line names Hank liked to imbibe a little, and play the ponies so his boat deposits often didn’t go where they should have Eventually Frank built his own Victory 21 in Hanks factory, which was the old Ford factory on Terminal Island, California. Frank found he was good at boat building so he founded Catalina Yachts and built many good boats, like the Coronados, Catalinas, and a lot of Victory 21s Hank continued building boats, he had a talent for fiberglass, however the Victory was his best looking boat. His boats were called, Thoroughbred, Champion, and finally Yorktown The Yorktowns were built like no other boat. He’d sell them at any stage of completion (like he did with Butler, which was one way to get it finished) The keel was hollow. The completed boat, if it ever was completed, was launched at “Eddies,” (which is still there) just down the channel from the old Ford plant, where it floated on its side Ballast was added until it floated level, then the cement truck backed up and filled the hollow keel and bilge until it floated on its lines. Hank took the completed boats weight distribution seriously, almost all boats float galley side down a bit, because it’s heavier than the dinette opposite. Not the Yorktowns Yorktowns were visually challenged, as all his designs were, but incredibly strong Hank helped invent fiberglass boat building He was among the first to use a spade rudder and fin keel (victory 21) You still see Yorktown in anchorages all over the world, as they are very inexpensive, capable, and, stronger than anything you could hit When I met Hank, he was laying up a Yorktown 42, by himself, at age 80. An amazing guy I was looking for a place to build a wood dinghy Hank let me use his shop for free, probably like he let Frank Butler and countless others. Search out Yorktowns and see his legacy Some are very nice Some, not so much Backyards all over Southern Cal and beyond still have partially built Yorktown 32s and 41s rumor has it that Hark used sail dimensions on some boats that were shared by other designs, allowing used sails to be found easily and cheaply

... any comment on the "winter cover" and frame. It looks like it was well designed and thought out ... and they just didn't "shrink-wrap" the boat ... (I grew up w/ Fischer Winter Canvas covers in NJ ... "breath-able" and didn't sweat the wooden boat into a rotting pile of junk ... )
I’m currently looking for a family sailboat for long term cruising. I’m kind of old fashioned and love the look of the old boats, but I recognize the benefits of the modern boats. As much as I keep searching different models, I keep coming back to the 38-42 catalina’s
Those horizontal wings on the keel won't give lift. They are upside down wings (compared to a plane) so they'll have a downward force; like the spoiler on the back of a car. The force is downward because the distance under the keel-wing is longer than the distance across the top causing the water molecules under the keel-wing to spread out as they travel a further distance; and thereby causing a 'vacuum' which the comparatively more compacted water molecules above the keel-wing try to fill by pushing down through the wing, and in this case causing downward 'lift'.
The new boats are definitely nice and well thought out however I don't have that feeling looking at it as one gets with a older boat.. kinda like a antique piano vs a new one or keyboard.
What a great layout and it looks in really nice condition, but whenever I see sleeping arrangements on boats where there's very little height over the bed the first thing that comes into my head is how much that's going to limit the positions of "conjugal activity".....I think I need therapy! 😁
My concern is the cord, if that keel takes a hard blow, what might the result be? Then what is this keel is grounded in muck or sand? That should be fun.
OK, I'm a little confused here. They make the effort to to flush mount the thru hull fittings, to reduce drag but then they install a non-feathering prop. Then at 4:21 min. there is a feathering prop in the frame. What's going on here.
Good point about the flush fittings with the non-feathering prop.... I suppose the mfg keeps it streamlined but the owner can put on the prop they like best. The feathering prop you saw was an example from a previous episode touring a Beneteau 461 (you should see a text/graphic reference)
Captain Q, can you please do an episode on a Gulfstar? I see several around for what seems to be great prices. Would love to hear your thoughts on the brand!
When you were laying in the aft berth under the cockpit sole. I'm wondering to myself, _if the ocean/sea decides to dump a big wave into the cockpit_ where are the scuppers ? Assume just 2 on aft end of cockpit sole ? An it's a little tight, hopefully no head injuries
Hey Captain Q - great video, no sea dog today though. But another Aussie reference, you have theme going on here. I'm curious as to why this would not be a Bluewater sailing boat. Is it the lack of rudder and prop skeg /protection? Weight? It looks like a very comfortable boat for extended trips. The thing I like about this boat is it looks low maintenance, so more sailing time, v's fixing time.
For comparison purposes, too bad you missed the original Catalina 38 designed by S&S that was right in front of that 380. The black hull with white boot stripe
I'm curious to know what a fair price on one of these is in that condition which I think it would be hard to find better? Thanks for the tour and definitely one that called out to me...
There were 2 on the market at that price... and of course, the asking price is just the start of a conversation... you just never know how eager the seller is...
Awe shoot, we are in the market and I was all set to travel then Q mentioned she sold. She looked to be in very nice condition. Thanks Q. Is it ok I call you Q?

wish I could say that it was me that bought it ,, LOVE THAT BOAT !!!
You are so good at explaining all the parts and concepts! Why not make a sailing lesson video!!!
good idea.... just have to let the waters thaw out a little 😁
GREAT CHANNEL!! AND AMAZING VIDEO
My favorite you tube channel
thank you Tim
Thanks for the episode. Loved the boat.
Captain Q and Randy thank you for another find. Well done again and interesting. 🇺🇸👏⛵️
So Glad you enjoyed it
My concern is the cord, if that keel takes a hard blow, what might the result be? Then what is this keel is grounded in muck or sand? That should be fun.
Spent a lot of time sailing a Catalina 30. Sailed well. Easy to care for. I'd like to hear Captain Q's review of a Sabre 28.
Sabre is high up on our list!
Gorgeous!!!!....Another Humdinger!!!!!!!!
Are those blisters on the hull at 3:10?
Captain Q, can you please do an episode on a Gulfstar? I see several around for what seems to be great prices. Would love to hear your thoughts on the brand!
we have a beauty in the Q queue .:-)
I want a gig like Randay has.
It’s not just about keel bolts as you know, if that keel finds a rock at 6 knots, will it crack the underbelly? Test this for us Captain Q?
I know this boat... May have been on it or docked it at Newport Yachting Center age 14-18 dock hand /wharf rat.
Am i seeing a different prop and anode at 4.22?
Yes, that's from our episode #13 - a Beneteau 461... similar but different
Seawater in the cockpit can flow out under the helm seat thru the open transom.
there is no transom in the boat almost...instantly goes over board almost look again
@@YachtHunters Oops
Love this channel

Hey Captain Q - great video, no sea dog today though. But another Aussie reference, you have theme going on here.
I'm curious as to why this would not be a Bluewater sailing boat. Is it the lack of rudder and prop skeg /protection? Weight?
It looks like a very comfortable boat for extended trips.
The thing I like about this boat is it looks low maintenance, so more sailing time, v's fixing time.
Lower volume water and fuel tanks. Lighter gauge construction and rigging. My guesses.
Safety at sea accommodations is one key point along with some of the above ...not cut and dried and always room to go either way depending on prep
deck stepped mast and lighter rigging, for sure.
Worth every penny!
Well usually i prefer my rank to be included but since we gave us that rank you can call me anything ....except late for dinner ( that's a really old one sorry )
@@YachtHunters That's ok Q, I use it from time to time myself.
Are the main salon ports glued in?
What a beauty!!
Question, would you Global voyage in this vessel?
Hoping you'll make a video on a 30' size Fisher Motorsailer. Enclosed Helm looks much more comfortable being out of the Sun, Wind and Rain.
Or any size Fisher would be awesome 100%
working on one
Great stuff guys
Geez I look forward to this every week. I get it Friday`s in West Oz Captain, winter still hanging on a bit by you lads. Catalina yachts pretty spiffy indeed. This one....no wonder it sold ..just mint.
