Around minute 16, you play the 3rd phrase of the Temple of Time theme, and the scored note in measure 3 of that line is a low C, but the audio is a D. Not trying to be pedantic, but just wanted to share since that's another example of the final appearing in the piece!
Played the original as a kid. I was capable of beating the early temples and bosses easy enough, but without a guide I was relying on asking my friend at school where to go next. The times I didn't know where to go next, I'd go to the temple wondering why it was so empty, what was behind the door, what was the secret of it? All with that atmospheric chant in the background. It felt very special. Ahhh the days you couldn't watch a walkthrough and no choice but to truly get lost in a game.
Super glad you guys came out with another of these! Please don’t let it be the last! This series of videos got me into music, analogy, and history in games. Now I can’t seem to scratch that itch because I’ve watched them all multiple times. Please sir, can I have some more?
.. funny enough, someone already did a video of that exact concept you mentioned. Although, I'm always game to see other musically inclined people put their own takes and input on their interpretation of the artform! {: Edit: It's actually mentioned in the video. The video by 8-bit covers this very idea. Edit #2: I'm dumb. That's a different video, but same person. 8-bit did a whole spiel on the brilliance of writing a bunch of melodies using only five notes. It's actually given me some ideas in my own compositional journey!
@@Risen907 I know it's a cliche phrase, but "Restrictions Breed Creativity" is pretty true of most of the arts. Whether you're a creative writer who does daily writing prompts to focus yourself or a music composer restricting yourself to composing using only three instruments (to emulate how 8-bit music only had three channels), oftentimes those restrictions really force the creative mind to go above and beyond in order to produce within the limits. Although, admittedly, it is pretty stressful as well when you're also on a time crunch.
When I was a kid playing on the N64, any time I got frustrated with a dungeon or scared by a certain area's ambiance (lookin' at you, Tomb of the Royal Family), I'd take a break from OoT's main story and just go vibe in the Temple of Time. It reminded me of the cathedral where my parents and I attended Mass every week, so it was familiar and soothing to me, without losing any of its grandeur or mystery. I've loved all the videos in this series, but I'm especially happy that the Temple of Time was the subject of your triumphant return to these essays. Really looking forward to more!
It's so cool that you have such a good memory, with family nonetheless. I hope you live more good moments so your life has a great collection of good memories!
@@gracenote108 It's an area beneath Kakariko Graveyard. You reach it by playing Zelda's Lullaby in front of the Royal Family's gravestone. Making your way through it rewards you with the Sun's Song, which freezes Re-Deads and allows you to skip forward to either morning or night. The Tomb mostly terrified me as a kid because of the aforementioned Re-Deads lol.
It was a somber place, impeccable atmosphere. Although, the remake version makes everything look over-bright and clownish compared to the original version
The Temple of Time always felt like a special place. I would often just slow walk through the hall just to take in the song and ambiance. It’s honestly astonishing to recognise what an achievement the songs were in OOT, especially when you learn just how many limitations there were. I can still instantly recall at least half of the songs from OOT some 25 years later.
I think using 5 notes for many of the songs worked in their favor. The songs are simple, beautiful, and most of all memorable. Limitation often breeds creativity and I definitely think that is the case here. The music in OoT is probably my favorite of any game ever. It just adds so much. I also love how you can change the pitch of the ocarina with the joystick. Adding that was a nice little tidbit that they could have easily foregone, and I'm glad they didnt.
Very cool to see this series return! The Temple of Time music is definitely one of the most memorable tracks to originate in OOT, and I love how the simpleness of it plays so well into its use ingame as the Song of Time. So many Bible spoilers in this video!
I've always loved how this song can feel so haunting, yet strangly calming at the same time. It really is the perfect atmospheric piece. And Koji Kondo was a genius. I can't imagine how much time and effort must have gone into this. All the history was really interesting, especially about the architecture of the temple. You've helped me gain a new appreciation for one of the best songs in one of my favorite games. Thank you.
I decided to do a comfort rewatch of these recently and was happy to see a few more new ones! Then I go back to finish the Playlist and find ANOTHER new video added? So glad this series is continuing lol
The Temple of Time was such a cool place with an absolutely breathtaking theme. The devs knew this too, since when you revisit it in Twilight Princess they reuse the exact same theme for the beginning area of the Temple.
I remember listening to this song when I first entered the Temple of Time as a kid, that was a magical experience. Thanks for making an analysis video on it, I always enjoy learning about the real-world inspiration behind my favorite games.
I don't know if you are still reading comments these many months later, but I want you to know that I love these videos. OOT remains my favorite LOZ game. And you keep your videos engaging enough to keep my boys interested. And we have been studying music and music theory thanks to and with the help of your videos. So thank you for all the hard work you put in for us
So glad to see Temple of Time’s track get the attention it deserves. I will never forget the first time playing OoT when I entered that hallowed building, playing as a Catholic child the sense of holiness and reverence it inspired so unexpectedly was moving
When I was in my early teenage years, this was one of the songs I used to play in order to help me get to sleep! The song of time, regardless of Chant or Ocarina form just holds a special place in my heart!
As someone who sings Gregorian chant every Sunday, this was well done! Thank you for taking the time to look into it as remains my favorite music to sing. One thing I love in the chant notation is that all of the notes are relative, so it is very easy to change the starting pitch to fit your group.
Sometimes simple works best. I needed a church song for my DnD campaign and was looking all over for it. I eventually came across a half hour long version of a remix of this song. Yeah, hearing that while walking into a large basilica housing a dragon skeleton revered as a holy creature has an impact.
Fingers crossed for those big numbies because I'd love to see more video essays in the future! I learned a fair bit about the history of the Catholic Church, music, and architecture, which I didn't expect from today but am quite delighted by!
So happy to see another one of these videos. This series is one of my personal favorites on this channel. I also really like the attention to some of the historical details regarding both the temple's design and the in game music. The parallels to churches and cathedrals for the temple are very fitting considering that in the German translation of the game (that being the version I grew up with) the temple of time is called the "citadel of time" The same goes for the song of time, with it being compared to hymns. Because once again, in the German translation the track is straight up called "the hymn of time" Really makes me appreciate and love the German translation even more. And massive props to the translators for putting in so much detail regarding architecture history. (I think at least. I'm not really into architecture)
Rewatching the entire series for the third time, it's probabbly the highest quality shit i've ever seen onthis subject, thanks for the effort! Too bad there isnt one for Clock Town :(
I just found this channel after clicking on a video "Why the Stone Tower Temple Is So Iconic". I love the dungeon music analysis videos as they combine both history, culture, and music! Are you going to make more video essays on dungeons in the Windwaker or maybe Tears of the Kingdom?
Aside from the fact that domes were actually rediscovered back in the Early/High Renaissance period by Brunelleschi, most of the history research for this video is spot on! Really appreciate the beauty of the Legend of Zelda looking at it from a deeper, historical perspective :D
This theme holds so much for me personally. It would always be the very first thing I’d heard booting up the game after a long week. I played this game for an incredibly long time on my first experience and as such, this theme got essentially engraved in my brain and I look back at it with a feeling of nostalgia, and eagerness to get back into the world of Hyrule to see what I could complete.
I'm so happy to see you do another analysis video on Legend of Zelda music! I missed them! Also liked the background information on the church history and construction that influenced the Temple of Time environment design. If you do another one of these, I would LOVE it if you did an analysis of the soundtrack, Final Hours from Majora's Mask. It's so beautifully haunting, that I would love to hear what makes it tick and why it works so well.
I'm SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO glad you're doing these again! I scream at people about this playlist if they even mention Legend of Zelda! Thanks for being you
I love these videos. I've watched each one multiple times! Looking forward to the next one (fingers crossed there will be more). One quick thing though, at 15:56 the note shows a "C" but a "D" is heard. That note matches the last note in pitch but is written differently. No big deal, just thought I'd mention it in case it confused anybody. Once again, love the content! I wish this series and your channel success!
The sound of Link's little footsteps tippy-tapping through the Temple of Time with the gorgeous melody in the backgroun....*chef's kiss* I LOVE these deep dives. It makes me appreciate the craft of this game even more.
I marathoned your entire Dungeon Music Analysis playlist in preparation for this video, and I love how professional they are, and how much research went into all of them. You did a great job with this series, and I'd love to see more someday.
As a kid my mind would go wild while listening to this game's soundtrack. This particular track always made me think of the middle ages where monks are singing gregorian chants in a mysterious castle that might be otherworldly or exist outside time and space. It's really hard to put into words but it still transports me far away from daily life and the current moment.
7:12 My own personal theory-- though I have no solid evidence to back it up-- is: When The Three Goddesses left Hyrule, the exact geographical location of their departure became sanctified as THE entrance to the Sacred Realm. The Master Sword was placed there to seal the entrance to The Sacred Realm with magic, and The Temple of Time was built AROUND The Master Sword-- and thus the entrance to the Sacred Realm. I have loved the sound of Gregorian chanting ever since I was a little kid. I would walk slowly through the temple of time to listen to it any time I was there.
Years ago, I once attended evening mass at St. James Cathedral in Seattle on Saturday night. After mass was over, it's common for some people to stick around for a bit and pray. I listened to this track on my ipod and just sat in the dim, spacious Cathedral. It is a very fond memory. I have always loved this track.
i remember when i was in middle school and played Ocarina of Time 3d for the first time, i used to just leave my 3ds on in the Temple of Time to listen to the music because i found it really relaxing
Love this series, I hope it continues to cover more Zelda songs. In particular could you cover the song of healing sometime in the near future. Being a small song maybe you can do a video covering it with some other smaller tunes to make a full video if there's just not enough to talk about. But I do love learning not just about the music but the culture behind the settings and history that you provide.
The timing of these videos is so hilarious. Last time, you analyzed the spanish influence and the influence of the moors behind Gerudo Valley, when we had exactly that in our Spanish classe. This time, I have to hold a presentation about the middle age, including its architecture and you upload this video 😂 Thank you so much for helping me in my educaion haha
10:22 LMAO What a good video, thanks. I was expecting you talked about that little theme when you open the doors of time for the first time, it gives me goosebumps everytime, reminds me of some Bach fugues.
I was so excited when I saw this in my feed. Though I’ve had to quit and come back a few times, but now am watching it in full, I’m still excited. Would love to see more. Also low key enjoy when you’re talking about Zelda with Kingdom Hearts music playing sometimes
I couldn't believe it was you making another one of this at first. I actually thought someone was using your idea to do some more videos. Keep it going!
I thought I had somehow missed this one in your other Zelda stuff, but no, you just returned to it after a year, what a pleasant surprise. I'd definitely listen to more of these!
This video is impressive and humbling. I was just talking to someone earlier tonight about various Zelda lore/theory channels and how curious they make me regarding what kind of fruit such dedication, memorization, and passion would bear if it were poured into reading/studying and interpreting the Bible instead of lore/theory videos about a video game. And here your video shows up to bridge the gap between the two.
When the Paper Mario 64 music made a return to the background of these videos I was very happy lol For real though, great work as always. Finding the meaning in simplicity isn't always easy. And I got nostalgic for my music history classes. Looking forward to whenever you find time for the next one!
this was so fun to watch! ironically, we just finished our romanesque unit in my art history class, so i got so excited when you pointed out all the architectural references! this makes me appreciate OoT even more than I already do; the devs really did their research. thank you for keeping up this series!
This song reminds me of all the times i used to try to do the temple of time master sword door glitch because getting past all the kid dungeons was so hard for little me, thank you so much for these videos! I learn so much from them❤
I know very little about music theory and architecture, but I find them both enjoyable and fascinating. These are some of my favorite videos on RUclips because you explain these two subjects so well centered around one of my favorite franchises ever. Thank you!
My favorite version of this song is the moment it plays when you place the spirit stones down. The doors are opening and the song is slighly altered to add a sense of accomplicement
The temple of time was the first moment in my life where the music of a game made me stop dead in my tracks. It was so incredible and atmospheric that it really opened up a love for video game music. It was the first moment as a child where I was so moved by a piece of music. I would often come back to the temple of time just to listen to it. That moment opened up a whole new part of my life and i dont know if I would appreciate game music the same way now if not for that experience.
Sad to see how, even when returning to your pretty much most successfull series, you're still so incredibly underrated... These Essays are just such a joy
Man, i’d *love* hear more about architecture in zelda games, or just games in general! I feel like some of the temples/dungeons from TP and SS would be really awesome to take a deeper look at, if that’s something you’d enjoy!
Thank you so much for these videos. I used to major in music and LoZ is my favorite game. These help with my anxiety (except for maybe the Shadow Temple one 😂) because I don’t struggle to focus. I’ll be looking out for more like these!
The song of time might just be my all time favourite Zelda song. I'm someone who really pays attention and appreciates the art of video game music. I really love these kind of videos! Thanks Save Data!!!
fun fact for beginner guitar players. this is a great little tune to help learn note placement in the first position for c major. and thankfully You included both the bass and treble clef parts.
MAN this was AWESOME! Thank you SO MUCH for doing this. As the guy who commented a year ago saying I was a guy into eastern catholicism and gregorian chant, this was a really cool video essay on these themes in OoT. Thank you for also doing it tastefully. You really delivered! 🙏🏻 Happy Quasimodo Sunday and Happy Easter! 🙏🏻
Small correction at 12:47 (apologies if others have already pointed this out). Time signatures don't indicate the tempo, they merely indicate the number of beats per measure, and the length value of each beat. The tempo is however indicated just above the time signature. In the case of your example, using the phrase "Allegro moderato," which suggests a moderately brisk tempo (anywhere from 96-120 bpm). Some sheet music may specify the exact bpm (beats per minute) if the composer wants. That aside, stellar content! I love music analyses like this.
I really appreciate your musical and architectural analysis on each temples! I'm doing some research on OOT temples and structures and find these videos super useful!
I'm so pumped to see a new video come out in this series! You dive into the depths of Zelda music like nobody else. I sincerely hope you consider making more of these, I loved the ones you did on the OoT and MM dungeons!

This was both insightful and fun to listen to. I don't know a lot about Music Theory, but I'm fascinated by it! Thank you for putting this video out. I always loved just sitting in the temple of time and listening to the music for a while when first playing on the N64. Great essay!
i remember when i was in middle school and played Ocarina of Time 3d for the first time, i used to just leave my 3ds on in the Temple of Time to listen to the music because i found it really relaxing
I love your insights on the Zelda games' music. Thanks for the amazing update.
Love the inclusion of the Dive to the Heart theme in the architecture segment
Yes! Would love a deep dive into some of Yoko Shimomura's music!
Glad you did another one of these! “The perfect atmospheric song in a video game doesn’t exis-“ Love it!
i love these type of videos, especially the extra attention to detail and history :)
Thank you! 😁
People who write and create music are truly amazing! I really enjoyed all your research and knowing the history behind the architecture and music!
Thank you! 😁
Haha, glad to help you out!
I would love to see an actual modern-day gregorian choir sing this song.
10:22 LMAO
What a good video, thanks.
Keep it going!
the historical architecture background bit was unexpected but really cool! also congrats on saying "buttresses" with a straight face so many times
Between buttresses and groin vaults, I think Church architects might have been a little freaky 😂
I thought I had somehow missed this one in your other Zelda stuff, but no, you just returned to it after a year, what a pleasant surprise. I'd definitely listen to more of these!
Finally learned what makes a basilica special. Thanks!
Also, totally wasn't expecting that crash course in Church and music history. Props!
When the Paper Mario 64 music made a return to the background of these videos I was very happy lol
For real though, great work as always. Finding the meaning in simplicity isn't always easy. And I got nostalgic for my music history classes. Looking forward to whenever you find time for the next one!
Thank you Les! 😁
My favourite style of video here, hope the series continues :)
It will!
this was so fun to watch! ironically, we just finished our romanesque unit in my art history class, so i got so excited when you pointed out all the architectural references! this makes me appreciate OoT even more than I already do; the devs really did their research. thank you for keeping up this series!
Oh that’s awesome! 😁 thanks for the kind words!
Thanks for putting out another Zelda music analysis!!! Love this series!
Thank you! 😁
I love coming back to this series every so often. I'm always glad to see a new video! Can't wait for more!
I completely missed this upload, you snuck it right by me lol. Another fantastic piece explained superbly 😊
This song reminds me of all the times i used to try to do the temple of time master sword door glitch because getting past all the kid dungeons was so hard for little me, thank you so much for these videos! I learn so much from them❤
"Y'all heareth this sh*t?" I was going to give the video a like regardless, but this was the moment I remembered to do so.
4:54 - 6:32 You had the End of the World Battle Theme from KH1 here! I could hear it, and I thought I was tripping at first 😂
I know very little about music theory and architecture, but I find them both enjoyable and fascinating. These are some of my favorite videos on RUclips because you explain these two subjects so well centered around one of my favorite franchises ever. Thank you!
My favorite version of this song is the moment it plays when you place the spirit stones down. The doors are opening and the song is slighly altered to add a sense of accomplicement
Probably one of the best pieces of music in the game in my opinion! I am so happy you did a video! And I can’t wait to see more!
As soon as I got home, first thing I did was play this video.
Love these
OMG THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THE SERIES BACK
These throw back music videos are incredible and bring me so much joy!!! can you please do more, maybe from Wind Waker and Twilight Princess!!
This is one of the video series that roped me into watching RUclips on a regular basis, so I guess take that as encouragement
Thank you very much!
I LOVE this video. Music history? Zelda? Zelda MUSIC? Church history and architecture?! this video is incredible
Thanks! Not sure if you've seen, but I have a playlist of a bunch of these too! 😀
Only 13 days ago? Your videos are the reason I got into music theory! Would love to see so much more!
Discovered your video essays on Zelda music late last year and they've been some of my favorite analytical content on RUclips. Would love to see more!
Thank you! I don’t plan to take as long of a break for the next one! 😁
Man, i’d *love* hear more about architecture in zelda games, or just games in general! I feel like some of the temples/dungeons from TP and SS would be really awesome to take a deeper look at, if that’s something you’d enjoy!
Please keep on doing theses vid essays! They are amazing, so it this the gotta thank’em all song! Brilliant!!!!
Thank you! I'll def have another one out in a shorter period of time than last time!
Please keep this going. I’m eager to see your analysis of Wind Waker dungeons and beyond!
Not a video about TLoZ taking me all the way back to undergrad music history class 😂
Loved all the extras, glad to see this series still going
Thank you so much for these videos. I used to major in music and LoZ is my favorite game. These help with my anxiety (except for maybe the Shadow Temple one 😂) because I don’t struggle to focus. I’ll be looking out for more like these!
The song of time might just be my all time favourite Zelda song. I'm someone who really pays attention and appreciates the art of video game music. I really love these kind of videos! Thanks Save Data!!!
YES! I have been waiting patiently for another of these videos! Thank you so much! I love these videos!
Thank you! 😁
fun fact for beginner guitar players. this is a great little tune to help learn note placement in the first position for c major. and thankfully You included both the bass and treble clef parts.
YES! Please do more of these, specifically covering more Zelda songs because Koji Kondo is a god 👌🏻
A zelda documentary with kingdom hearts themes in background.... Love it.
(P.S. I’m a law student as well and a year ago after my comment I found your Ace Attorney with a real lawyer and I have to say I’ve loved that series)
Ahh, thank you for watching it! Hope Law School's going well! 😅
The atmosphere in older games was THICC I’ve always loved this theme thanks for the video!
Love these videos so much, please continue more music analysis for oot! 🎉
YYEYEEEEAAAAHHH I LOVE YOUR ZELDA MUSIC THEORY VIDEOS I love music theory and being able to know these things about some of my favorite pierces of music is literally so cool like I can't even put it into words it just makes me so happy aaaa
Thank you! 😁
This was both insightful and fun to listen to. I don't know a lot about Music Theory, but I'm fascinated by it! Thank you for putting this video out. I dunno if it seemed boring to you as a topic, but I absolutely LOVED it. There have been times I just stood in the Temple of Time to listen to this .... I dunno, hardly interesting song, but.... I was memorized by it. Now, I think I know why. Something in it resonates in my heart, through my body to reach out to my soul... It's amazing
So glad you regained your integrity and released another Zelda music analysis video. This channel's pride has now been uncompromised.
Dog bless you Hawlucha 😂
I remember just sitting in the Temple of Time for the music while I did homework as a child.
