You could also show how to move a hinge hole a tiny amount by drilling a larger hole, gluing in a wooden dowel and re-drilling a screw hole in the new spot.
That’s exactly what I need to do on a door! Thx for the tip - would be good to see.
Just tried on my old bathroom door, and it worked like a charm! Thank you for amazing home improvement tips!
Very helpful 😊
awesome tip and to the point. I get sick of these videos that take 5 minutes to explain the problem and giving a ton of irrelevant information before giving the solution.
Plastic zip tie works great. Better than a toothpick in some cases
Brilliant, that’s why we watch RUclips to come across folk like you who get the rest of us out of an issue. Well done, much appreciated! Ed, Somerset, UK
*Runs to find toothpicks and screwdriver* I have a handful of items that needed THIS tip! THANK YOU!
This insta-fix is S tier level content!
I like to add a little wood glue also.
what if the screw needs to come out one day?
@@user-uf6gj6ry4s the wood glue will not stick to the metal screw.
@@user-uf6gj6ry4s you have to get a cutting torch to get it out if you put wood glue on it. A little known fact is that they use wood glue to put the space shuttle together since it's the strongest bonding substance known to man
The wood glue helps fill the hole real good. I agree
@@MOON_KID didn't hold Challenger together
so clever!!
Brilliant! Thank you Shannon!
Dude, I was on my way to home depot to get bigger screws and saw your video. Worked perfect thanks!
Good video, Shannon! Actually, my dad taught me how to do this several years ago and it really works.👍
Thank you.
I learned this same technique when repairing one of my old guitars (for the strap screw). Great info, Shannon!
This worked really well, I had a larger piece of scrap wood sitting around and it worked great.
Awesome idea thanks for sharing your experience!!
Brilliant
You rock :)
One of the most amazing things I have ever seen!
So simple it's beautiful
Love it.
Another great one is to use the wood BBQ skewers which are basically large tooth picks. The cool thing is they are about the size of a door screw already so you just have to glue it up, shove it in and break it off. Toothpicks work great as well
I save disposable chopsticks from takeout for this, but usually glue and then redrill them too. As long as you use a good self-centering drill bit made for hinges it will keep things aligned.
Nice little tip
Nice! I share you channel with so many people. You guys are awesome.
Hey Shannon. Good To Know!!
I like your video's the best!
Like it! Good tip!
I do the same thing and also add a small dab of wood glue to the screw hole before putting the toothpick in.
Hi Shannon have you ever fixed a stiped out screw hole with a pencil and some glue. Drill a hole just a bit smaller than the pencil. I use a pencil that has been sharpened and snap off the lead. Put glue in the hole tap the pencil in the hole cut it off with multi tool and run your screw in the pencil lead. Quick and easy fix for holes to big for a tooth pick. I always have tooth picks in the van at all times. You can even use them to pick corn out of your teeth if you have been eating corn on the cob Lol. Great videos keep them coming Thanks
I have never used that method.
Wooden golf tees are best...toothpicks work good as well
Ikea drawer screws work as a charm. And you always have few of them laying around :)
You're now the reason my door handle stays on! Thanks for this tip, came at such a handy time. Brilliant.
First tried it with a wood-screw, which didn't work very well, though - chewed through the toothpicks.. makes a lot of sense :P - but a regular screw went in like a charm.
My uncle would always give me tips on how to avoid the belt from my father instead of teaching these type of things! thank u so much, ur the uncle i never knew excisted
Matchstick works good also!
I tend to use a dab of pva glue too.
I just had to do this to my old amoire toothpick and wood putty
Without this tip, we may be screwed.
Wooden match sticks work good also.
Shannon I find a golf tee works great for this repair as they are tapered
That's an old trick that I've used many times in the past works every time but good tip for those that have never
I use 1/4 inch dowel redrill for screw
indeed
👍👍
Yep, a toothpick, i found dipping it in some wood glue helps too
I always add a bit of wood glue.
I have watched many videos of you, and I like them very much. I have a new household product that I would like to ask you to test for me, and I hope to hear your professional analysis
If I'm in a perfectionist mood, I would also add some wood glue on the tooth picks
Ha. Nice.
A lot of the time this won't work . drill out the old holes and tap in cheap precut fluted dowel pegs of the same size with glue or CA, using mallet. then trim flush if necessary (usually not) with flush saw and chisel. Then drill preferably with self centering bit then rescrew. An air bag ($10) to lift door will help a lot.
This toothpick option will work more times than it won't but in extreme cases you may need to add a dowel instead as you suggested.
@@HouseImprovements I guess I just had bad luck then 😉
Toothpick works. I prefer to drill a 1/4 hole and glue in a oak dowel, saw flush then use a hinge drill to center drill
At first i thought it said “how to fix a strippers screw hole”,,,,, but now i know how to fix stripped screw holes
Ya sorry I dont have "that " video! LOL
@@HouseImprovements i sure hope not lol, you could always make a tutorial on how to install a stripper pole hahaha. I love your channel though, helps me through alot of home renos as i am not much of a carpenter.
Hey, what would be the way to fix a stripped screw in sheet metal? On something like a clothes dryer?
About all you could do is install a slightly larger sized screw. So if they are a number 6 try a number 8 of the same length as long as its just into sheet metal .
Thx...can now fix my kitchen cabinet door hardware hinge/screw hole stripped... youtube waynesville NC 🇺🇸 veteran
How about using wood filler (if the materiel is wood)?
More time consuming to fill the entire depth of the hole then waiting until dry. It can also be crushed to dust if it's brittle.
Toothpicks are okay, but the weakest of many options: A thicker sliver of wood or a golf tee with wood glue are stronger. Plastic zip-ties or copper wire are stronger, because they will not be crushed to little fibers like toothpicks can be sometimes.
The strongest but most labor extensive fix would be to drill out the hole, drive in a dowel with wood glue, and then drill a pilot hole. This eliminates any of the pre-existing damaged wood in the door.
MagiusUSA has a good reply for you .
I usually use tree branches
Zip ties, copper wire, tooth picks all great depending in materials and applications
I like this. Much cheaper than a wall anchor.
Golf tees.
I've always used toothpicks with a drop of wood glue
You can also use longer screw at times, wall anchor or even a thin gauge wire as well! A toothpick obviously works great as well! Lol
try jamming cotton then soak that with super glue, works great. i used toothpicks for years, usually 3 at a time hammered in but have been testing the super glue version for the last few months so the jury is still out on that one. one more thing, the cotton and super glue is great when a lot of wood is missing from the hole.
“Did it.”
I screw is stripped How do I remove the screw?
pocket knife under the head of the screw then reverse the screw out.
You can also loosen the remaining screws and use the hinge/object as a lever to get the stripped one started back out.
They have you covered below.
I'm talking about removing the SCREW itself once it's stripped. I know what to do after. Also, My utility trailer Gate is rusted shut in up position. I have tried everything I can, bought all sorts of rust releasers and it's still frozen upright! Any ideas?
@@sharonwilder5975 Assuming steel, heat and and a few good whacks/impact. Often the threads are jammed with rust and it's a matter of loosening the schmutz. I wouldn't spare the heat -- let it glow a bit.
I always just use a longer screw so you're biting into fresh wood.
Many of these doors don't have much wood there to start with.
Did this a long with using a longer screw and yep, nothin
Drill it out for the appropriate dowel rod. Glue dowel rod in place and cut off the excess. Will be a much better repair.
So the answer isn't to send a 3 inch screw in its place?
Many of theses doors are hollow and only have about 1" of wood along the edges.
If you don't have toothpicks, I used a spare piece of scrap wood and a razor blade to shave off pieces.
Ask for chopsticks when you are ordering Chinese and get some wood glue
tooth pick. Match sticks are better.
Too bad you’re not an American. You could run for president and fix our government. It’s pretty screwed up.
