This is exactly the info I needed to fix the leg on my sofa--same screw attached TO sofa, same stripped hole in the leg. Thank you!
After searching all throughout RUclips I finally found the answer to my furniture problem thanks so much! I bought a as-is desk recently and a gentleman described how I could fix it with a little dowels? After searching this is what he was talking about! perfect!
Thank you! Perfect solution for my library step wheel castors that were stripped. Bought it for $20 at antique shop...can fix for pennies. Will get some matchstick and splinters from fireplace wood pile. For those suggesting a dowel maybe use a chinese food chop stick for my project. I just didn't want to risk damaging an antique with drilling.
Just wanted to come here and comment. Found your video by accident. Tried your method and it worked! Mine was different though. The bolt screws into both the leg and the chair base. The problem was with both. The chair base hole was bigger and required some sort of "filler". The toothpicks and the wood glue was the perfect solution. Thank you!
Cool! Glad it helped you out. Feel free to subscribe to my little channel (that helps me out).
Grandpa taught me this trick with match sticks, which I always felt was wasteful, and was curious to see if toothpicks would work, guess I got my answer! Thanks for the video!
You could always save match sticks from your BBQ matches to use for this if you don't want to waste new ones.
Thanks v much - thats a great way to fix the wooden knob which came off on my chest of drawers! Well explained and filmed too :)
I love this & the commenters teaching us other things
Perfect! Using this tutorial to fix a beautiful bedpost. Thanks so much.
That's why I came, too.
Thanks! I'm going to do this for wooden drawer pulls on an antique dresser.
I have tiny table that has a loose leg for a year😂 due to stripped hole. I tried gluing it but it didnt last. I would never have thought of this. I didnt have toothpicks but thicker craft sticks. Thanks so much!
Hi! Just tried this and it worked. It was easy to do. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you so much for this video! I have been racking my brain trying to figure out how to fix a chair leg and this is it perfect thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful! Subscribe it you could, that helps my little channel grow! Thanks!
"Back in the repair shop aka my office." Great video thank you.
Thanks for this!
Thank you! I will try that.😊
Good luck! Did it work?
This tip was great. Thanks so much.
I did it now and it worked, thank you
Perfect solution ! I’ve been looking, so happy to see your video ! Thanks ! 🙏
I have done this with an ikea chair that looks like this about 4-5 years ago and it is still holding up.
Very helpful THANK YOU
Excellent idea
I need to repair a solid wood table where the screws that held one of the legs up have been stripped out. I had thought that inserting dowels into the stripped areas would do the trick. I'm curious to know if you think that your method would work also, it would save me a lot of time and keep me from potentially causing damage to this table.
You should make sure the plug very is tight. Without clamping pressure, the plug won't bond to the wood properly. I usually tap them in with a hammer. Also, make sure the entire hole and plug is coated with glue. I have used this technique to patch holes where a coat hook has been ripped out of a hollow door. The result is stronger than the original door was.
Thank you so much for the video!
This is good for a quick fix on something light duty (not chairs & couches), rather use a dowel & drill a small hole, much stronger and harder!! It will cost a penny more and save a broken arm and headache.
I agree
You are a lifesaver. It is 3:45 in the morning here Arizona time and leave it to me I decide I want to move my couches around. Well This isn’t going as smoothly as I expected. Apparently as bad luck would have its way with me, it seems that the foot of my couch came off and to my surprise it is completely stripped therefore pointless to try to put it back on. Good thing is that it’s the same kind of wooden foot like the one you have in this video. I’m gonna Try your method which seems to be pretty easy, economical and with great results. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for your video
Can you share a video ?
5:00 helping hand! 😂
Great video. Thank you
Thanks - perfect for my problem.
Thanks for the video
Awesome!!! 😄👍
awesome, thanks!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Great video , possibly could use a wallplug or pieces of insulated electrical wire in lieu of the toothpicks/matchsticks 🙂
Genius technique
Thanks man
Glad it helped. Thx for watching and don't forget to subscribe (it helps me keep making videos) DANDLINC.
Thank you and best video
Toothpick is a very soft wood. It will not last. Use a stronger wood dowel and glue it on the hole.
I wish I would have looked for this video sooner! Just stubborn I guess. Feel silly for not thinking of this. Thanks for the tip! Subbed.
Thanks for the sub. Hope the repair works as you hope. Cheers!
Thank you
Any advice on filling the pre drilled hole on the couch itself? I picked up a couch for resale. Mint condition. One of the predrilled holes in the bottom of the couch is stripped so the leg isn't catching . I was going to just glue the leg or find a plastic piece to hammer in there.
Thank u 🙏🏽
Good job the wife's not home lol
Good tip! Cheers
Wow got a sofa and having issue screwing and will try it out and thank you
Nice! Who was watching the kids while you filmed though?
In short, I purchased a well-manufactured sofa, 96 inches in length.
The sofa has three supporting legs. Three in the front two in the
back.
Unfortunately, in order to get it into my tiny NYC apartment, we had
to take off both of the back legs and one of the front corner legs.
The legs had hanger bolts (double threaded) but it was impossible to
unscrew the legs because the manufacturer also used glue AND the legs
were custom fit into the frame. Impossible to turn.
Well, now that the legs are detached, I have to figure out what to do
to re-attach them.... or use a heavy duty top plate on each of the
break point and install new legs. The latter will not be pretty
because they would not match the other legs. What would you do?
Thank you sir 🎉
Thanks
Could you use this approach to remove the hanger bolt in a screw on leg and replace it with a smaller hanger bolt?
Could you use Liquid Nails in place of the wood glue ??
Hope it works … am going to try it in a few minutes
I have a stripped whole on my bed, but the whole contained a steel insert for the screw. Can I use the same technique to reinsert the insert?
The screw is attached to the leg from the chair in my situation. However I put glue & toothpicks in the hole in the chair & will try to re-screw tomorrow after the glue dries....we will see if it works
Came on this by accident. Dad used this same technique 50+ years ago.
Can this be used on metal desk legs ?
I have this same issue. Only problem is the screw in the chair is no longer solid, so it just turns and I can’t get my hand inside the chair to hold it for tightening. Any suggestions?
I have an overstuffed chair...the screw is in the leg but there is a big hole in the chair..nothing to screw it into..any suggestions ???
had to clean filters in my RV --removed the 2 screws and noticed when i re-installed the intake grate...the holes are stripped...this idea sounds awesome BUT my ceiling is like cardboard it seems...any idea how to fix stripped holes in very cheap what seems cardboard like ceiling?
Billie Vaughn Same way..toothpicks and glue
5:19 that screw that’s already in the couch. Mine goes all the way inside when I’m trying to attach the leg. Like it’s not attached to anything inside. The screw hole might be stripped I think. What can I do to fix it thank you?
I have a different problem, i am trying to remove a chair bottom from kitchen chair, bolt will not come out, so I assume the wood screw hole is stripped, how do i get the bolt out
I use one toothpick and no glue to fix door hinge screws.
Can we insert dowels in that hole n re drill it ???
Truth Exposed. Yes, dowels can be used. Toothpicks are in essence, very small dowels. Thx for watching! DANDLINC (don't forget to sub)
Try wooden golf tees for larger holes.
The metal part also came out with the wooden leg. How to fix it?
I've done the same thing without the glue!
Helping hand at 5:01 lol
I did the toothpick and glue part but can't screw it back in now. Maybe I don't have the strength. How do you get it started to screw it back in!!
you can drill a pilot hole - to make it easier - just be sure to use a drill bit that is smaller than your screw diameter so there's still plenty of wood for the screw to dig in to.
@@jaredralphstanley, my carpenter found a screw in his truck which was the same exact kind but longer so he could drive it further into the leg. Worked like a charm.
Well I'll be damned now that's a million dollar idea
I have a similar problem but it's not with the couch legs itself it's with the Couch Itself did the same nonsense with the 1st set of legs
How do you keep the glue from going bad and getting hard once you open it?
Excellent question Miss Arcene. First thing, always cap the glue when not in use. The glue in my applicator nozzle (the tip of the bottle) typically dries out and gets hard. Before I made this video, I used my 1/16th inch drill bit and drilled the nozzle clean. (I'm basically too frugal to throw out the good glue underneath). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE! DANDLINC.
Close the container
I would have glued in a dowel and cut it flush and then made a fresh start hole for the dowel screw.
Where I founded this glue
I founded mine at the glue store, down the glue aisle, on the glue shelf...I'm now glued to RUclips!
You are so awsome!!! Your quick and easy fix is GREAT!!! Thank you ssssooooooooo much......
Something similar happened, with my drone. It didn't come charged, so I tried to take the back off to charge it. But the screw hole was stripped, and the screw wouldn't come out! (the screw could spin though) If someone has an idea, please tell me!
1) Remove all screws that you can.
2) Tighten stripped screw again and again until it is so stripped that you can "muscle" the back off.
3) Repair hole using a like material (wood or plastic) and an appropriate glue.
If actual problem is the post inside where screw mates is broken off, you have a bigger and different problem that will require a different solution. I do not have that solution.
Will this work with plastic?
This will work with plastic, but I suspect the longevity of the repair might be questionable. You can always try. Please let me know what happens. DANDLINC (and don't forget to sub!)
Toothpicks are made out of softwood and are going to compress significantly overtime and fail in shortorder
Can I use cinnamon flavored toothpicks?
NO! ONLY MINT 😡
So, if your wife was home, you would not fix the chair in the Kitchen.
Basically, yes. I wouldn't be disturbing her by filming there. I set up lights, need quiet....etc... Thanks for watching!
I did it just like your video. Waited 24 hours. It didn't work :( It just turned into sawdust when I screwed it in.
not enough glue. too many toothpicks. the glue is what holds it all together, so change the ratio.
Toothpicks aren't wood these days.. they're more of a shiny fibrous sort of thing that dont work well at all. Use strong scissors or cutters on some shims instead. The pieces wont be the same but its real wood that can grip the threading, glue, and hold
Good tip....but the tooth picks were real wood....sold alongside of a more modern material tooth pick. Good point though! Thx for watching.
Kitchen matches are wood. Just don't forget to clip off the match heads.
Thanks an awesome Tip. Thank you and thanks for watching. (don't forget to sub!) DANDLINC
super glues faster
This is why we can't have nice things....happy, healthy, beautiful people, but not nice things lol right?
Indeed! Thx for watching.
that was my laff for the day!
waste of time, no need for that ... a few strike matches , snapped into the hole .. and screw back .. not even a task over night ..
A wood peg would work much better.
I am wooden sofa legs manufacturer , Do you think we can cooperation and sell legs in video (advertisement)
I'm sure you can find awesome woodworking plans on woodprix website
First and foremost, discipline you children not to jump/play on the furniture. They'er probably the same rug-rats who jump up and down in the booth behind me when I'm trying to eat....I grew up in the 50's and you didn't do that s*** or you would wind up on permanent snow shoveling duty with a tea-spoon...in Wisconsin on Lake Superior...
Tom Dees wow...you sound like a happy person 😂😂 I bet your kids just loved you 😒 I hope you don’t have grandkids.
woodprix website if you'd like to know how to make it easy. Good solution for every woodworker.
use a dowell not toothpicks.
