The way I did it is to say I can’t have even one sip of alcohol. I gave it up on a New Years Day and that meant a fresh start and no alcohol anymore. I’ve now got a 27 year record if you like with no alcohol to keep up. If I have one sip it means that record is broken. That’s what keeps me off it. As the years went on from the start that I gave it up, that record got longer. There is no way I’m going to break that 27 years with one sip, NO CHANCE!!!!! I’m proud of 27 years without a drink of alcohol and it’s staying that way. It worked for me.
@ Yes, thanks. Another thing that helped me was I went to an alcohol anonymous meeting 2 years after I gave it up with someone who was going to those meetings. It was only a 5 minute walk from where I lived so I said I’d go with her to have a look what they do. This guy stood up he looked like he was in his 50’s and said he lost his wife his home his business all through alcohol and the next bit he said was he’d been off it TWENTY! years. That shocked me a bit and straight away I thought I’m going to aim for that long myself, he inspired me to do what he had done. When I reached that 20 year mark I immediately thought of him. I’d got there, he inspired me without knowing himself. Here I am 27 years later. One thing for certain time flies by quickly.
I'm really glad that you keep repeating you can't have one drink and it gets worse each time you relapse. Every alcoholic should repeat that until it is engraved the brain.
Hi that’s exactly what I’m like I worry so much before going into a pub the non alcohol Guinness is a massive game changer for me tastes good and you don’t get get alcoholic cravings and feel good next day
@stevencurry215 I'm good. I cook and bake a lot, so I made a banana cake this morning and my turkey soup (from turkey bones from Christmas) is on the stove.
@@Drumcode79 alcohol free beers eventually lead me back to drinking , I was warned many times by AA , but I thought I knew better Maybe some people can do it , but in my opinion IF you are a Alcoholic ... Alcohol free beers are Def a no go
I had a thought recently about how, when you're a child, everything seems great, you wake up with so much energy and you can have fun all day long doing the most simple of things. People always talk about it as if this sense of joy and wonder just naturally wears off as you get older and have to live life as an adult, with the stresses and strains that it entails. Is it a coincidence that life becomes so much more dull and difficult when people 'come of age' and then start drinking alcohol on a regular basis? I think not.
Great comment. I say the same. It's quite amazing how young your body feels when you don't drink. These things only complicate life. They also make people do stupid things in order to feed their addiction.
When innocence ends, you take on the crap that your parent's endured, different tech but the same old shite. It's the not so hidden "debt slave system" we live in...see "The Jones plantation" documentary for a proper explanation. This year is going to be VERY interesting as they collapse the UK economy.
Thankyou so much Steven. I'm an alcoholic. Once I lift and drink one drink it sets of my my addiction again. I have so much trauma. Not an excuse I know. I don't know. Very good at stopping. Staying stepped is the problem. Being sober is the best gift. Can row my rowing machine. Go walking. Spend time with my very good friends. It is excellent
Getting sober takes time and practice (it took me three years). The goal is to learn a set of tools that help you maintain sobriety (for me it was reconnecting with society and my hobbies, playing the tape forward, and knowing when to take a time out for myself). I'm now at the point where I don't want to drink, and my past addiction doesn't stop me from doing anything.
The further I get away from that last drink 22 days ago, the stronger I feel. You motivated me to get back to the gym, been a very long time since I did any exercise, itshard but worth it. I need as many good distractions as I can get!
One drink relaxes you and then you are less likely to question yourself when it comes to a second drink etc. alcohol makes people do silly things including making you forget about things (I don't need to go into detail). Will power is definitely needed, also avoid going to bars and if that is on your route home from work etc perhaps try a different route. Also if your supposed friends are there to support you they should be understanding that you wish to quit. Also a sober night out is bloody boring. I hope this is motivating. Have a good day reader.
Approaching 2 weeks alcohol free, my first Friday finishing work for the week after Christmas & the mind games started. What a hard week, I've earned a drink, I can moderate my drinking now, enjoy a few beers, maybe a Scotch, the lines were touching and I was making plans for an innocent stop at the local off licence that I drive past each day. It was hard as hell as drove straight home instead, ive earned the right, ive changed, it won't hurt, I want to unwind..all the demons at once. What pulled me through was the thought of waking up feeling not only rough, but devastated that again I was too weak, knowing that with each export beer, and treble Scotch, I'm slowly rotting my organs and my life. Stay strong 💪
Thanks for today's excellent message Steven, much appreciated. Today is Saturday, and it still is a miracle. I woke up sober, and I've had a productive day. Your awesome channel helps keep me on the right path, thank you Steven ❤
A video that has stuck with me before I found your channel is one that includes Matthew Perry speaking about ‘the first drink’ and that is the only one you control, really helped me stay off the drink.
Don't know if it's just me ... I have having 1 drink as it gives me that itch that I need to scratch... with 6-12 more drinks. It actually feels unpleasant to have an 'almost' slight buzz, and I can't relax or sleep, etc. I'm definately trying to tone it down, but don't think I've ever had the itch for 1 drink, I'd rather have a water.
Hi Steve love your channel very inspiring I’ve really cut down my drinking I find once I have 3 or 4 pints I get the taste and cannot control it I lost the best girl I ever had after a daytime drinking session she saw me really spaced out in a site never forgave me i do anything to get that day back drinking is such a fine line , I vouch what you said exercise really helps and improves the mood so much for me
One of the lads from work had his 30th yesterday, I went and drank J20 all night, had a right laugh with me mates who were all in varying degrees of lubricated..33days dry today..I'd be drinking right now(10am) if I hadn't stopped...
I'm currently testament that you can't have just one drink. 3 months dry, to one drink on New Years. 2 weeks later - have been drinking heavily since, thought I was in control again finally and just relapsed once more tonight. DON'T DO IT! Lesson learned for me.
Great video Steven! I can honestly say I'm almost sober confident. Had a major craving today but it was for donuts, didn't give in though 🤣 3 months 17 days sober today 🙌
The reason people drink to excess is because your life sucks. It makes the "world go away" for a time. You are borrowing happiness from tomorrow. Sadly, the day after your life still sucks, plus you have a crippling hangover. IMO, you have to find what aspect of your life you are not happy with and tackle that. We all have a space to fill. Be sure to fill it with something positive.
Why can't I have one drink. Then next it will be why can't I have 2 drinks. Then why not just a six pack. And you are right back in the shitter. At least I would be. Great topic Steven, thanks
One drink to myself would mean one gallon at least when ever in the past had a drink it must end been drunk. So for that reason I'm staying away from alcohol and actually drinking a carton of fruit juice over a day or two in place of wine I've drank all my life. I'm sleeping much more since stopping drink for the reason I feel exhausted plus still got bad headaches I can't shake off.
One drink would drag me back into daily drinking within a week. It would also lead me to my other addictions, vaping, kratom, energy drinks, molly, adderall. Addiction convinces you that if you're going to fall, you might as well fall hard and get your moneys worth. That's why I will never take that first sip again as long as I live.
Good video. It’s a fact we won’t stop at one, our brains love it and will crave more. Our brains still believe it will make us feel great and it’ll be a glorious party! 🎉 despite all the evidence to the contrary. Gotta try to remember the excrutiating feeling of withdrawal.
This is so true! I’m in the depths of addiction. Today needs to be the day that I stop drinking. I’ve drunk everyday for the last twenty. It’s got worse and worse 😢
@stevencurry215 the sad fact is that someone somewhere will be telling themselves or perhaps being told by there friends that one drink won't hurt, and that they won't be back on it again.
I used to be sober for a few days and then go for one drink after work as a reward, and I'd have one and stop, and think "It's OK, I can handle this", but the next day I'd go for one and end up having two and then start to get a taste for it for the days ahead. It always wins, no matter how much you think you can control it.
