I guess I am somewhat cynical myself. I married young and my ex divorced me 15 years ago after 30 odd years of marriage. I am 65 years old and quite happy to be on my own. I have great friends and a good social life. I have not had a date at all. I have had a few guys ask me, but I am not interested. I am a happy old lady living my life on my terms. Love and romance are fine for some and lead to heartbreak for others. I am just grateful to have gotten away. I wish my ex and his new wife every happiness. I am all about doing what makes me happy. Living out in the beautiful countryside can also be a very lonely place and now with the old pubs closing down all over the place there are fewer and fewer places for the older people/men to meet up, loneliness is one of the hardest pains to suffer from.

Men like Tom need to look in the mirror and realise it's not a one-sided issue. The man doesn't just get to have his pick of the crop - those days are long gone - the woman has to be satisfied too. Most women in their twenties or thirties in modern Ireland who are finding it hard to find love, are in that position due to demanding careers - nothing whatsoever to do with their personal attributes or looks - and the last thing they want is some over confident, ageing man, who believes himself to be a far better catch than he is. The other men seem nice enough, but Tom came across as far too forward. Just realised this doc. was made in 2006. If those men thought they had a hard time back then - almost two decades ago - at finding love; with today's culture of social media, instagram influencers and superficiality; they haven't got a hope in hell.
Tom is 39, which is not that old for a man. However, he looks no younger than 54. Do you think the rural nature of most of Ireland combined with the housing crisis in the cities make modern Ireland difficult to find relationships?

It's no longer as ''rural'' as it was even a decade ago. I live in a small town, but it has all of the modern amenities and fairly decent public transport. In the past twenty years, so many new housing estates have been built in the countryside to accomodate the ever growing population. This documentary has lost its relevancy, somewhat, due to the many changes; both economic and societal which have come into effect over the past few years. With regards to Tom; do you not think it's strange that a man who was born in Dublin, but lived in Spain and travelled quite a bit, had not found a partner with whom he could settle down? Unlike the older man, who had lived all his life on the old family farm and was quite backward - even for twenty years ago - Tom really didn't have an excuse. Personally, from the glimpse we were afforded, he struck me as someone with a fairly high opinion of himself who thought he had so much going for him that he could afford to be choosy when it came to women - when the opposite was true. Before I met my partner, when I was in my early twenties, I lost count of all the times my friends and I were hit on by men like Tom. Those (usually prematurely aged, due to lack of self-care and heavy drinking) types made our skin crawl because they breached personal boundaries instantly, then often boasted about where they had been and what they had seen. That doesn't impress a twenty four year old uni graduate, who has already seen a fair bit of the world and has a decent job and a nice flat. Educated young women want a partner who shares their interests and treats them as an equal, as opposed to some antiquated dinosaur who wants nothing more than a bang maid/ broodmare.

I love that this country is holding onto the traditions of its culture. Sometimes others can see the best mate for the long term. In the old old days marriage was an exchange that benefited the family and helped the family to survive. It's only today that we marry for love, friendship and emotional dependence on our mate.
Your point is 1000% correct. I have 3 kids because I got married young and had no clue what I was doing. I’ve been separated now for 6 years and I’m beyond lucky that my wife and myself have never considered ourselves not part of the family. We don’t know if we can get back together but we will always love each other. If it wasn’t for her and stupidity, I wouldn’t have a family today which by the way is the single most important thing in my life. It also didn’t hurt that she’s a gorgeous woman so I was kinda blinded at the time. If I analyzed everything at when I was in my 20, and looked at every possible reason whether we should have gotten married or not, I’d have nothing today. We only get one chance in life. You can take a chance at love and maybe get a broken heart or you stand on the sidelines of life.
My mother who is in her 80s stills remember her grandmother talking about the time back in the day when someone married a Catholic or Protestant. And the family separation it caused.

I don't know what to make of your comment, but can assure you I did in fact record the voiceover, as well as produce and direct the documentary. It was originally made with Japanese voiceover, so it did it at my own expense so that English speakers could enjoy the film. Sorry it spoiled your enjoyment - can you be more specific about what exactly you found so unappealing about it? I don't know what to make of your comment, but can assure you I did in fact record the voiceover, as well as produce and direct the documentary. It was originally made with Japanese voiceover, so it did it at my own expense so that English speakers could enjoy the film. Sorry it spoiled your enjoyment - can you be more specific about what exactly you found so unappealing about it? I'm still recording voiceovers now, 18 years later, but am always looking to learn and improve. Thanks for taking the time, and hope you enjoyed the rest of it...
