    Giant Gambian rats are rather like possums in size and they whistle when they speak. They are great on power grooming a person. I met one called Whistling Bob in Wales a few years ago and he was a great character! It was a great privilege to be able to be groomed by him and be able to let him sit in my lap!! :)

    Wow! This is amazing! The rats are light enough in weight so they don't detonate the land mines.

    This might sound like a stupid question: where did the landmines come from and why are people living close to them if they know there may be some around?

    • @wwaxwork
      @wwaxwork 7 лет назад +16

      During civil wars the land mines are put down by opposing sides. The mines where specifically put near civilian areas to more to handicap local people, say by blowing off a leg or arm, so they cannot fight back. They will also booby trap items that might attract children to injure or kill them so they won't grow up to be soldiers to. These people don't move because they don't have anywhere to go.

    That is so cool! How certain are the results? Do the rats ever miss a mine?

    • @fabricdragon
      @fabricdragon 2 года назад +3

      very rarely, actually. they are more accurate (and safer) than many other methods. no method 9or person or rat) is 100%, but the rats come very very close

    • @herorats
      @herorats  Год назад +3

      APOPO's HeroRATs have never missed a mine in operations since we began. They are 100% accurate.

      @@fabricdragonthe rats are the safest way, they weigh less than 6 kilos not enough for a landmine to trigger their explosives

    Who are the horrible people who planted the landmines?

    • @ethankajfosz5912
      @ethankajfosz5912 Год назад +2

      War soldiers. Whenever a war has ended, some land mines that did not explode would still remain in the area, waiting for unfortunate civilians to step on one.

      No, they are not heavy enough to trigger it thankfully.
