Thanks for the info. I was going to buy a brand new diesel about 8 years ago. About the same time, a buddy of mine bought a new one …. And talked me out of it. I felt bad for him because he had sooooo many emissions problems. It was constantly in the shop. The technician at the dealership told him that the emissions were only gonna get worse. After a few years, he sold it and replaced it with an 04. I listened and bought an O2 and glad I did. Close to 400,000 miles now…. i’ve never had a serious issue other than maintenance.

I had my 5th gen Cummins tuned/remapped. It was crazy how much better it performed. Sounded great too. But to anyone who’s considering deleting keep in mind it’s quite a headache trying to find a reputable tuner. Tuning is like a speakeasy nowadays.

I've had an Edge CTS3 Evolution on my 2015 LML for about a year. It is still a stock truck aside from the sump and Airdog I installed. I haven't had any issues yet. I run it on the high tune but don't beat on the truck. It is peppy for sure when I need it. Fingers crossed.

I have been running a Banks after market tuning box on my 2019 LP5 fort the past two years with no adverse effects. Given, fuel economy has gone down about 3 mpg, for the added performance . I primarily drive at highway speeds for extended periods, so no REGEN problems here. Hopes this helps those on the fence about obtaining Moderate HP gains from your newer Duramax.

I agree with you to a point .
You should have made the clear difference between “box tuners” and EFI live programmers .
They rewrite your ECM and TCM and you don’t need to send them out .
I know you and I know that but wish you made it clear that there’s a clear line between the 2.

I bought my 2002 GMC 2500 Sierra in 2003 from original owner and almost immediately ordered a 4” stainless exhaust system, a Gale Banks Six-gun tuner package with optional “ Speed loader “ and the Banks “ Big head waste gate”. I did All the install myself over a couple consecutive weekends and set the waste-gate for only 28 pounds of boost ( for turbo longevity and to keep head gaskets in place ) as back then that was supposedly the upper limits for the LB-7 . Long story short it’s been in this same state ( except for S&B cold air intake with oiled filter & an Air-Dog 100 G.P.H. Lift pump . ( done after replacing all 8 injectors finally at 136,000 miles ) . It has towed just about everything I have hooked to the trailer ball without any complaints or issues , gets 18-22 mpg on open roads empty , and around 14-16 with my 30 ft toy-hauler in tow . With the lower 3 settings the truck has almost zero smoke on acceleration and is in the “ Safe zones “ , then at positions 4-6 it really wakes up and in # 6 position ( with optional speed loader ) is supposed to be making around 155 hp more than the stock 300 flywheel hp as rated by G.M. I honestly cannot complain one bit about any of the optional parts I have added . My truck is NOT the fastest Diesel pickup on the road today for sure , but at almost 23 years old now it’s definitely been one of the most reliable vehicles I’ve ever owned , hands down . I do religious oil changes , and run the PPE LargerEngine oil & Trans Filters , plus Either Chevron Delo -400 or Shell Rotella oils. Other than a water pump and a transfer case pump -rub kit ( as a precautionary measure as it’s nearing the 150,000 mile mark where a lot fail) it has really been mostly trouble free considering the abuse it sometimes gets . I’m fortunate my rig had almost No Emmision related factory equipment on it , unlike rigs of today , and as a result feel it will be a Cold Day in HELL before I personally step up to buy a newer “ ECO- FRIENDLY “ Diesel . Almost all the new ones are now designed in one form or another to have a failure of some sort prematurely shortening the engines lifespan. Sorry , just my input here and my 2 cents worth of opinion . Love your channel, and all you do & hopefully continue to do for all your viewers. Thanks 👍👍

I would never violate the EPA rules, but I know a guy with a mostly stock LBZ who has been running a Superchips Flashpak for over 12 years (125k miles) much of it pulling a 15k camper. Runs a tow tune 90% of the time. No doubt a custom tune would be better. The display is jacked, but hand calculated, gets about 2mpg unloaded and 1mpg pulling. Gets 3mpg better with the performance tune, but "he" doesn't like the drivability. Like you, if I get a newer diesel, I would leave it stock.

Honestly unless you have a trailer hooked to your truck more than 50% of the time I don't think diesel is the way to go anymore. We have a gas 7.3 at work and it pulls better than an older 6.7 cummins, gets around the same milage as a 6.7 powerstroke without all the headaches of a modern emissions intact diesel.

So I have a 2007lbz had a banks economind with the man machine interface. Mileage didn't change much. But after a few years I had problems with the map sensor and maf sensor. Eventually with the turbo sensor. Took it off all codes went away. After a couple months of stock had a local timer tune with a national tuners tune with the sp5 switch. Still stock emissions. Have not had those codes for a few years.5 months at an army school now I do need to upgrade my turbo due to the p003a code.

I’ve ran a PPE Hot +2 on my LBZ for the past 15 years with ZERO problems. Ran the 90 tune for most of its life and have had it on the 160 tune for the past 3 years. If I tow heavy, I back it down. But for light towing I leave it on the 160. I don’t beat on my truck, I’m very careful when it’s shifting from 4-5, & 5-6 and even more careful when downshifting under acceleration. But if not towing, I don’t hesitate to floor it when necessary. I have experienced converter shutter a few times under hard acceleration but never slipping of gears, or Limp Mode. Stock Allison trans btw. I’ve always felt that I’m on borrowed time but so far, so good.

2008 3500hd LMM 9 city 11 hwy upon purchase. Purchased a Duramilager box tuner doubled my mileage a darn near as much in throttle response. Programmed economy tune into it, all I was looking for was something to better fuel economy, it's HSP all around Except the EGR it's all still factory. Dpf regins every 400 mile-ish with average 14 to 16 grams of soot, and does it in less than 15 miles. I put about 1 oz of Everyday Diesel Treatment in about every 2 or 3 top off's,, to help on the soot buildup and it definitely has. Motors all stock except for bolt ones that I did from your channel 😉

Now after 16 years and 300K plus miles I have no complaints. Get a real tune. The "boxes" spoof what your actual ECU sees. If it's available go get a actual dyno tune done... Also watch the tunes that you use with those screens that get loaded to your ecu, most of the time they are a canned tune aka not specific to your engine. Dyno tunes are absolutely the way to go...

  • @tampastreet2117
    @tampastreet2117 2 года назад

The best thing would be would be tuning your truck on a Dyno or the street and make the changes to what the truck wants. When you send your ECU off to the tuner they’re guessing what your truck will do with whatever you have done with it they can’t actually see the numbers it’s running at.
In my eyes it’s the same thing as one of those box tuners

What's your guys thought?

I've gotten to a point where I just have decided to leave my trucks stock from now on. It's becoming too hard to tune trucks way to expensive and on a $90,000+ truck to blow the warranty for some extra power that I really don't need doesn't seem worth it anymore. I have used emissions on tuning worked great but at some point, I just don't care to flash the ecm's in these trucks anymore.

I've got a 2003 California emissions LB7 and it's tuned with Duramax Tuners' spade (efi live hardeware) and I love it. Box tuners only adjust a handful of parameters whereas custom tuning adjusts most if not all the parameters.
    Great explanation. 👍🏻

Truckmaster... Josh.. you couldn't have said it better. Your honesty is representative of your professionalism. Older diesel pre-emissions the sky is the limit... or your wallet and credit cards anyway ! GO FOR IT. But on the new trucks ... leave it stock. Other then a few simple bolt on items. The juice is not worth the squeeze. Another good point you made. The horse power and torque gains... for the loss of warranty and it's illegal to delete it... and resale value... and everything else. Are not really that great. If you want a real hot rod... tractor pull... drag truck.. HOT ROD. Buy a older truck and build it and build it right. Top end bottom end exhaust and intake drive train... build a hot rod. But yeah.. your completely right. If you own a new truck. Leave it stock. Enjoy it and take care of it. It will last a long time. Most importantly you won't have any problems that cannot be worked on by any shop or dealership if needed.
As always Truckmaster you provided some great information.
Happy New Year to you and yours and of course the guys at RDS and KODIAK.

I have a 2020 sierra 2500HD and was thinking about doing a box tuner and have been on the fence about it...truck is still under factory warranty and only mod is an S&B intake system. Do you think the hot and/or cold intercooler tube upgrades help with anything at all on an otherwise stock truck? Anything I can do to help hear some of that turbo sound without deleting the truck or upgrading turbo? These new truck turbos are way too quiet lol.
