A minor correction I need to make when I talk about adapting an "unbalanced" 1/4", and use a 1/4" TRS to XLR to convert it to "balanced" - This isn't technically possible. Converting an "unbalanced" signal to a balanced signal requires something like a "DiBox" in between (I've added one to the description). I definitely could have been more clear on that.
I often use the terms "balanced" and "unbalanced" synonymously with XLR and TRS type cables, respectively, when referring to them... and that's a bad habit! The scenario I am actually talking about here is if the in-house audio is already "balanced" coming form the TRS side of things.
Thank you to my friends on the Broadcast Engineering Reddit community for pointing this out to me!
Really glad that you clarified the XLR/TRS balanced/un-balanced bit...that explanation made me cringe. Additionally, throw away that BNC "T" adapter...they were never useful for composite video since they mess with your termination, and they aren't useful in the slightest for SDI signals. They were originally intended for use with 10BASE2 "thin-net" coax ethernet from the 80's which is how they worked their way into the kits of many engineers who have been working for some time.
Hi from Iceland 2023 :) great videos, man!
TRS 1/4” can either be balanced mono or unbalanced stereo. You mentioned needing to go from unbalanced to balanced, but that is not always the case just because it is TRS 1/4”
I have a lot of the exact same stuff in my kit. But my kit has now evolved into a rolling Husky case that has separate bins for audio, HDMI, SDI, USB, VGA/random, and network stuff. You just never know what you're going to need!
Thank you for sharing this great content! Please remove the looping background music in the future as it is very distracting.
The BNC barrels you have are 50ohm style. All the cheap adapter kits include them. 50 ohm will have loss for HD video frequencies. 75ohm connectors do not have the white insulator around center pin. 50 ohm are used on wireless antennas.
Always 75 ohm. Used to use 50 ohm on SDI and they would fail every month.
This is a great industry video! I’m over on the radio side and have something like this but not as extensive. You’ve inspired me to make one a bit more extensive.
I ditto Aaron comment below! My kits have grown to include HDMI, DVI, Cringe “VGA” all just in case! I have a separate container for spare new connectors in case i need to fix on site.
I found that a Zuca travel kit is awesome for a portable tool kit, has Flashy wheels (Because i they didn’t have that when I was growing up!) a telescopic handle and best part is you can use it as a chair if the facility ran out of chairs or you need to sit down while you are fixing something!!
Love the SDI-Triax M to F and vice versa!!
Keep up the awesome work Broadcast Buddy!!
Keep it up man, you are very proffesional.. please we need more technical and educational videos.
Great video, would be really cool to see a follow up of what you'd consider essential tools on site
Nice job Ryan, glad the channel is growing! Do you have a link to the case that you use?
Thanks! I have added it to the description!
thanks for all i am from africa
Awesome kit!
Mini-Din for that BVS adapter :)
That's definitely what I ascertained after looking into it (because it definitely didn't sound right after I said it out loud, haha!)
The technical name that aja uses in their manual is DIN 1.0/2.3. But it appears as it's also sold as "Mini-BNC" for the common folk. All together I've even seen it listed as "DIN 1.0/2.3 Mini BNC". Thoughts? I know you'd know better than me!
@@BroadcastBuddyTV That is the correct full Part.... HD-BNC (like on the Ultra/Ultrix and Graphite) are the Amphenol connector that "twists" on like a BNC. The BVS type used by AJA and BMD is the "Din Mini-BNC adapter" that are spring loaded.... which had plenty of people dropping off the Din part and ordering the HD-BNC adapters cause someone heard them say Mini-BNC and were asked... "you mean the HD-BNC"... If you go with Din 1.0/2.3 mini to bnc you will be fine :)
