my son made the move 3 years ago he had most of his tools from being a company diesel tech, but one of his biggest expenses was scan tools diagnostic laptop and cummins software that he pays every year, also a good inspection camera is valuable tool.

Ben, I envy the weather in your area. Most who call want their car fixed the same day. Some call just to ask what I would charge to install something. I recently had an Explorer whose owner insisted after going to 4 shops all I needed to do was install a new computer, which I obtained and programmed it. Guess what.....it didn't fix the issue and now I had to charge again to find the problem. But now I have a customer who trusts me over all the others.
When you get the repeat customers, that's when you know you've made it.
Great video.....I get a lot of the Amazon parts crowd as well. 🙁

I get those calls also. "I need it today your mobile so do it now" also "the mechanic said i need this can you do it" i got a whole host of them. It is very entertaining at times.

Hey Ben, the more I watch your videos the more impressed I get. I normally don't get into long videos like this but seeing you trying to help someone get into the mobile side of automotive repair was kinda nice especially when it seems like everyone is trying to screw the next guy. I have been in your shoes and have done mobile repair as well as owning a shop and I would genuinely try to help any new comers as best as I could, so this brings me back a bit. Anyway, keep up the good work and the great videos. Also, it's pretty good of you to acknowledge the other RUclipsrs who you have learned something from and have helped you in some way. There's a lot of douchebags out there that wouldn't do that so good for you!

Question about the “assessment fee” you talked about. Can you give me an example of what that is or would be for? Sounded like it’s cheaper than a diagnostic call but I’m not certain what qualifies as an assessment job. Thanks for your time as always. Hope you’re staying warm up there. I’m a few hours south on the space coast of Florida and it’s nasty windy cold

I don't know where i said assessment fee but i think i know what you mean. basically what i do is charge someone based on what they need if its diagnosis its an hour charge so what ever you labor rate is. if someone has me come out to replace something they bought and its wrong they will get charged a trip fee for me taking a spot on my schedule. that turned out to be a waste. its for my time and travel. the cost would be based on your area. not everyone's labor rate is the same or over head so the charge would be based on you and your company and area.
i hope that helps if not let me know when where in the video i mentioned it

its a interesting Discussion. I run 20% markup plus 8% for shop supplies. A lot of my parts are in the thousands. Never had a customer complain about my billing

That’s probably a good number being your cost is that high. Good customer won’t complain about cost they will appreciate it through and through. Thanks for watching and sharing your information.

I really really appreciate this video. I learned a lot and took notes. Side note: when you get the starlink setup in the trailer…you might be able to do diagnostic/repair live streams, if you were inclined to do so.

What really hurts the tech industry is the return policy at the big chain auto parts stores. The do-it-yourselfer can afford to fire the parts cannon at their vehicle because the store will cheerfully return their money, without even a restocking fee, again and again when the expensive part they tried didn't fix the problem. It's another form of the participation trophy mentality. No one is held responsible for their own choices. The only exception to this is when the parts store tells them what they need to buy. Only then do they deserve a refund. A man tried the DIY approach for a couple of months and still couldn't make his truck run. He finally asked if I would come over and look at it. I had it running in half an hour. He paid me well over what I asked for and was happy that I put it back on the road.

unfortunately that is where this industry has gone. I get calls daily saying AutoZone already diagnosed just replace this part i bought. No sorry i dont do that. No matter how i serve it to the customer that it isn't a diagnosis most of them don't get it. So they aren't a customer of mine.
