I remember my dad teaching me the riff to "You Can't Do That" and he mentioned that Lennon had basically"stolen" the song from Wilson Pickett. I said "what do you mean by stole"? That's when he showed me stuff like the guitar riff and drums in "I Feel Fine" and the melody in "My Sweet Lord". I learned a lot about songwriting that day. Lol
I also learned to respect John for being so honest about what he had stolen during his career. With a few exceptions, the Beatles have always been at the forefront of giving proper credit to the musicians who inspired them. They're pretty much the opposite of Led Zeppelin when it comes to that. Anytime I hear them accused of so called 'cultural appropriation', I absolutely laugh my ass off.
"Come Together" is what they'd call an "Interpolation" nowadays. Hip hop is FULL of them. Interpolations are perfectly acceptable as long as the original artist is given credit. That's where John messed up. He should have just given Berry a partial songwriting credit. ..but he made it right in the end, so I'm no mad at him for it.
